Would Lindbergh Have Succeeded Alone?
This is one of those lady-singer-and-man-pianist acts that cluttered up the Vitaphone shorts catalogue in the late 1920s. Likely this was because they also cluttered up the vaudeville stage, and they were making movies of them before they all retired to Teaneck. Miss Ryan sings sentimental songs like "Mistakes" in which she's doleful over "our" mistakes, then soliloquizes on the subject of the Lone Eagle before going into the final chorus. Would Lindbergh have succeeded if he hadn't picked up the phone? She seems to suggest he wouldn't have, although I didn't know he had a telephone with him while he flew across the Atlantic.
Yellman plays a march, and then accompanies Miss Ryan in another song, and it's over. And not, I think, a moment too soon.
