The morning Ana Tijoux jumps on a Zoom call from Barcelona to talk to Rolling Stone about her new album, South African lawyers are making a case for Palestinians at The Hague. The Franco-Chilean rapper’s life has always been marked by politics. Born in Lille to Chilean immigrants fleeing the Pinotchet coup, she’s now a mother of two. Like much of the world, she’s been following the siege in Gaza closely and thinking about how people around the world can connect to what’s happening and speak out.

Like the cinematography sector overall this year, the profession’s prime annual festival, Poland’s Camerimage, has come through major challenges in 2023, says the event’s founder, Marek Zydowicz.
Launching in the historic town of Torun on Nov. 11, the 31st edition of the fest was organized in a time of nearby crises in Europe plus record levels of inflation hitting the region, and fallout from the Hollywood actors strike.
“It’s hard to say these things were really helping us,” notes Kazik Suwala, one of the festival’s key organizers and director of its most ambitious project, the construction of the European Film Center, which broke ground in October. “It was a tough year to work,” as he puts it. “The preparations were much harder than usual. Getting movies programmed involved much more time.”
Thus, Zydowicz and Suwala confess to feeling a bit of extra pride in pulling off a...

Syfy presents yet another TV movie disaster flick (does anyone else remember Collision Earth? because I’d nearly forgotten it) from 2011, now available on DVD. In this “epic” adventure, Yellowstone National Park is on the verge of erupting, with the potential to drown all of North America in lava (and supposedly coat the rest of the world in ashes, as one scientist believes could happen). With the surprisingly inadequate help of the Disaster Management Agency, British scientist Kate (Juliet Aubrey) and dedicated park ranger Charlie (Richard Burgi) must stop this Super Eruption.

The SyFy Original movie Collision Earth is just the kind of end-of-the-world disaster movie you would expect in such a Mayan-induced apocalyptic fever. Thanks to a wily comet, Mercury gets electro-magnetized by the sun and knocked off its orbit, sending it straight on a collision course to Earth. Naturally, it's left to a group of unlikely heroes to save the planet from destruction.
Fortunately, the knockoff Nasa station in the film has a program designed for just such an "Extinction Level Event." Unfortunately, it was designed by now-disgraced scientist James (Kirk Acevedo) and thus deemed unsuitable for use. James must then team up with the surviving member of the space shuttle Nautilus, Victoria (Diane Farr), that happens to be in trapped in Mercury's gravitational pull. She communicates with James via a makeshift radio designed by college students (Chad Krowchuck, Jessica Parker Kennedy) who are equally eager to help.
