It was 1981, and it just happened to be the only family vacation that me and my parents went ever went on. I didn’t have a dysfunctional childhood by any means, my parents just didn’t like going anywhere. They pioneered the concept of the modern staycation long before it was a broadly understood term in our lexicon. We ended up at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and we were staying in an actual old school “Devil’s Reject’s” style hotel.
What I mean is that it was longer than it was high and all the room entrances were on the outside of the building. They also had cable TV.

Moving Stories | 70 x 70: The Sorcerers + Iain Sinclair, Alan Moore & Chris Petit | Ray Harryhausen | London Indian Film Festival
Moving Stories, Bradford
Should you let the kids slob out with a movie or make them do something vaguely constructive during the summer holiday? This new, free exhibition lets you have it both ways. Using original sketches, models, and even full-scale sets, it shows how children's books are translated to the screen – which means you can see Roald Dahl's illustrated notebook for Fantastic Mr Fox alongside Wes Anderson's models from his movie, for example. There are also activity workshops, and some of the titles are playing in the cinema, too.

Ray Harryhausen was a luminary who nurtured the growth of countless imaginations. He was that rare filmmaker who was an active part of the evolution of the art form, taking his place both as the inspired and the inspirational. “When I first saw King Kong in 1933, I wanted to do something in the film business,” said Harryhausen in an interview for the documentary Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan. “Nothing like it had been put on the screen. . . it haunted me for years that, even though it was a little jerky, this creature was amazing. So big. You know, it just left an enormous impression. It wasn’t only the technical expertise, it was the whole production of the film. They took you by the hand from the mundane world of The Depression, and brought you into the most outrageous fantasy that’s ever been put on the screen. It really set me off on my career.” That...

Special effects master on fantasy films including Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans
In 1933, the 13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at the cinema and was hooked – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre "stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done." It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen, who has died aged 92, was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. He created the special effects for fantasy films such as The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958); Jason and the Argonauts (1963), with its famous army of skeletons; and Clash of the Titans (1981).

Ray Harryhausen, known for the magnificent stop motion creations that featured in the likes of Jason And The Argonauts and Mysterious Island, died today at the age of 92. The inspiration for directors like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron, he was also a much-loved contributor at countless fan events where he toured to talk about his work.
The inventor of 'dynamation', Harryhausen brought to life countless creatures from Greek myth, along with B-movie monsters that had personality as well as the ability to terrify filmgoers. His special effects featured in 15 films and he produced several more. He also authored several books focused on his art and methods. SFX guru Dennis Muren says, during one of the interviews in Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan, that today special effects are no longer special. Audiences expect them, and are no longer impressed by them. This wasn't the case back in the 50s and 60s when master animator Ray Harryhausen was breaking new ground and entertaining audiences the world over. That said, Harryhausen's work was right for the time, but would not stand up with audiences not familiar with his work today. They have come to expect the impossible, and that's what CGI almost delivers. The life and work of stop motion genius Ray Harryhausen is honoured in the documentary, Special Effects Titan. Here's Ryan's review...
Like so many young artists and would-be filmmakers of his generation, Ray Harryhausen was inspired by 1933's King Kong, and in particular the remarkable stop motion effects work of animator Willis O'Brien. But unlike so many of his peers, Harryhausen not only had an opportunity to meet his hero, but even worked for him as an apprentice; a few years after World War II, he helped O'Brien bring another screen gorilla to life in 1949's Mighty Joe Young.
These were the formative years in Harryhausen's long career, in which he himself would grow in stature, to become inarguably the most influential and respected special effects artist of the 20th century. The highlights of his life and work, from his earliest experiments in stop motion to his final feature,...

Argo (15)
(Ben Affleck, 2012, Us) Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, 120 mins
Affleck's rehabilitation is complete thanks to this unlikely-but-true collision of Hollywood sci-fi and Iranian politics. It looks and feels like a lost 1970s thriller, with perfect retro styling and slow-burning tension, all nicely undercut by a CIA agent's crazy plan to use a Star Wars knock-off to spirit Americans out of revolutionary Tehran. Alps (15)
(Giorgos Lanthimos, 2011, Gre) Stavros Psyllakis, Aris Servetalis, 93 mins

Affleck's rehabilitation is complete thanks to this unlikely-but-true collision of Hollywood sci-fi and Iranian politics. It looks and feels like a lost 1970s thriller, with perfect retro styling and slow-burning tension, all nicely undercut by a CIA agent's crazy plan to use a Star Wars knock-off to spirit Americans out of revolutionary Tehran. A fake 70s thriller about a fake 70s sci-fi, based on a real story – what's not to like?

★★★★☆ An auteur of special effects, Ray Harryhausen's fantastical monsters are the stuff of movie legend. Now the subject of filmmaker Gilles Penso's latest documentary, Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan (2011) pays homage to the 92-year-old, who has influenced some of today's greatest living mainstream directors, including Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson (who all contribute here). Starting with 1949's Mighty Joe Young (1949), we chart the visual artist's work across the decades, culminating in 1981's Clash of the Titans.

Special effects king Ray Harryhausen revolutionised cinema with skeletal armies and man-eating dinosaurs
Ownership of films is usually the preserve of directors and actors. You will hear of the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie, or the new Tom Cruise vehicle. But such films as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963)and Clash of the Titans (1981) are Ray Harryhausen films, regardless of who directed and acted in them. One Million Years BC, a film for which, unusually in his career, he was brought in as a hired hand, (1966) isn't even regarded as a Hammer or Raquel Welch movie. No other technician or artist working in film can make such a claim.
"Everyone has their own right way of doing things," explains Harryhausen, now aged 92. "I'd probably call myself a film-maker rather than just a special effects man. I'd often come up with the story, advise on the script,...

A new documentary celebrating the life and work of the great Ray Harryhausen, Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan, is heading for our cinemas and we've laid a pair of monster-sized paws on its new poster. Fittingly, many of Harryhausen's greatest creatures are present and correct. There's Kali, Medusa, Talos, Bubo, Calibos, the Cyclops, the Roc and a clutch of skeletons. We're guessing the giant squirrel from The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver was too busy gathering huge acorns to make the shoot. The new doc features contributions from heavyweight fans like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. As Empire's review points out this month, it's also brimming with "stunning test footage and genius clips". Should be plenty for Harryhausen aficionados and stop-motion fans to get their teeth into.Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan is out on November 9. For more on the great man in the meantime, check out our rundown of 20 great stop-motion monsters.
