When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

BET+ presents Average Joe, a ten-episode dark comedy thriller that delivers a captivating narrative around Joe Washington, a Pittsburgh-based plumber. The series takes a riveting turn as Joe’s seemingly ordinary life gets a chaotic makeover right after the death of his father, Teddy Washington. However, little did Joe know that his father lived a double life. While masquerading as the regular owner of a truck towing store, Teddy worked as a drug mule for Nicolai Dzhugasvili, one of the most powerful and evil Russian drug dealers.
Average Joe quickly became a fan-favorite comedy thriller, but unfortunately, it concluded as a typical formula thriller with an unnecessarily dragged-out and predictable ending. The open-ended nature of the final scenes might be intentional, possibly to set the stage for a future season. Although the release date for the next season on BET+ is yet unknown, the ending of season 1 offers ample potential...

Average Joe doesn't care much about my well-being now, does it?
I kid, but also not really because the closing minutes of Average Joe Season 1 Episode 10 were jaw-dropping and would have had me clutching my pearls if I owned any.
In a day and age where so many are afraid to take risks when closing out a season, that was far from the case here, as we were left on many a cliffhanger and a deep sorrow when those end credits came rolling around.
Average Joe Season 1 has been building up to the showdown between Nicolai and Joe, as Nicolai finally came face to face with the man who killed his son.
Naturally, Joe was tied up, and Nicolai could get his shots in, but outside of that, the scene did not play out the way I thought it would.
There was much conversation between the two men, each lamenting their own fathers,...

I knew Leon Montgomery would come through when it mattered the most!
Leon and Joe were severely outnumbered when they approached Nicolai's cabin on Average Joe Season 1 Episode 9, and yet they found themselves with a significant leg up before it all went downhill.
One second, it looked like maybe they would pull off the impossible, but when it rains, it pours, and just like that, they got stuck in Nicolai's orbit, and the sociopathic mobster had the upper hand.
Not a single part of me was prepared for Leon to show up and show out the way he did, but he's always had it in him.
Leon gets put down a lot, to the point where it can feel like a running joke more than anything else, but it felt like he started to buy into it. And sure, he's had some bumbling moments, and maybe he wasn't as stone-cold as his friends,...

Now I know my eyes must have deceived me, and Joe and Leon weren't running up to Nicolai's cabin without any backup!
After getting the tipoff a lifetime (thanks to a newly sober Touch), Joe and Leon had Jennifer within their grasp during the final minutes of Average Joe Season 1 Episode 8, but they were severely outnumbered.
There's nothing like a father's love, though, and Joe couldn't stand being so close to getting Jennifer back and not doing anything about it.
Average Joe was clearly setting up for the final hours during this installment, another episode that took place over a day and saw a somewhat unlikely quintet form.
Bringing in Talford was kind of something that couldn't be avoided at this point because she knew enough, and playing dumb just wasn't an option anymore.
Joe did the right thing in asking for her help, and with Joe, Leon, Angela,...

Things just got a whole lot more interesting for Joe!
With Angela in enemy territory, the race was on to free her from Nicolai's grasp on Average Joe Season 1 Episode 7, but what should have been a pretty straightforward exchange went completely off the rails when Jennifer threw a curveball no one saw coming.
And no one will ever be the same.
Joe had about seven seconds to get excited about finding the money before his world crashed.
And it was worse than just discovering he only found 1/10th of the money!
Angela's kidnapping naturally threw him into scramble mode, and I felt for him in those moments he realized that Angela was missing. But he was heavily misplacing his anger, probably due to the sinking feeling of guilt pooling in his stomach.
Not every bad thing that happened can be placed at Joe's feet. Outside of Jennifer, all these people are grown,...

Is Joe changing for the worse?
Ask Angela, and she may tell you he is, but it's easy to lose your sense of self when your ordinary life is suddenly unrecognizable. And Joe is most certainly not the same man we met in Average Joe Season 1 Episode 1.
With the money still out there and the Russians closing in, Joe and company needed to get back into the Washington house during Average Joe Season 1 Episode 6, and their plan was all sorts of crazy. But what else would you expect from this crew?
Angela and Jennifer have been a little wishy-washy about whether or not they should keep going after the money, so on the one hand, it's understandable why Joe pushed back on his wife when she told him to skip town and leave it all behind.
Because she was telling him to go after the money not too long ago.

The BET+ series, Average Joe, premiered on June 26, 2023, and has enjoyed mostly positive reviews. The Deon Cole-led black comedy follows an intriguing but easily relatable storyline. It is a perfect blend of action, thriller, and comedy-drama. Average Joe is created by American writer and producer Robb Cullen. Beyond Average Joe‘s amazing cast members, one selling point of the show is the inspiration behind it. Oftentimes, in the ever-creative world of filmmaking, there seems to be a blur between fiction and non-fiction. However, Average Joe’s story is said to be based on and inspired by the life of its...

Deon Cole has long joined the list of comedians who have successfully transitioned into acting. In his two-decade career as an actor, Cole has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in film and television. Cole has gone from playing minor roles to supporting roles and now playing the lead in the BET+ dark comedy Average Joe. Unsurprisingly, Average Joe received a cast-contingent script-to-series order. The success of Average Joe will lie in its incredible ensemble cast of super-talented actors, led by Cole. And for Cole, his acting versatility helped breathe life into Joe Washington’s character. BET Plus has a hit on its hands, and it comes in the form of Average Joe.
The intriguing dramedy has drummed up plenty of buzz, and Average Joe Season 1 is only just getting started.
One of the series' greatest strengths lies with its cast, which includes the captivating Kathrine Barnes, whose Russian assassin Arina will play a larger role as the series continues through its thrilling first effort.
Barnes was kind enough to jump on a Zoom and tell me about her character, the series at large, and many other topics.
The versatile actress was incredibly sincere with a great perspective about the series. Check this one out, TV Fanatics!
I got to check out the first couple of episodes, and I enjoyed it.
Nice.
I didn't know what to expect from the trailer. I was like, "It seems like it's going to be really intense." And it was.

Comedian and actor Deon Cole is stepping into the role of leading man with the new series Average Joe, which debuted on BET+ Monday. In the dark comedy-drama, Cole portrays Joe Washington, a husband and father whose regular blue-collar life gets turned upside down after his father dies and he discovers he stole $10 million from a Russian mob boss (Pasha Lychnikoff). In some ways, Cole, too, experienced a life change when he accepted the part and found himself number one on the call sheet for the first time in his career.
“It was extremely difficult because I’ve never been a lead,” Cole said during a special preview screening of the series held at Goya Studios during BET Weekend. “I’m used to just coming in, doing my part, jumping in my car and taking off, and going to go do stand-up. That was my routine with everything I’ve ever done.

Monday again? How does this keep happening? If you’re a fan of “Yellowstone” and its various spinoffs, you had a good, or at the very least informative week last week. The show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan said in an interview that the show will return for the final episodes of Season 5 at some point, and that the conclusion might be longer than the six episodes originally promised.
“Ted Lasso” fans also got positive news last week, though admittedly a bit more ambiguous. Series star and co-creator Brendan Hunt indicated that more seasons of the show or new spinoffs are possible in some form, but that everyone who worked on it needed to take a break and come back to see what potential really exists for more.
Until those shows make their way back to airwaves and streaming platforms, however, there is a fantastic lineup of new shows and movies coming to streaming this week!

You know a good pilot when you see one.
Because a good pilot is one that makes you desperate to know what will happen next. It's really that plain and simple. And Average Joe Season 1 Episode 1 is a good pilot.
An exciting setup, intriguing characters, and dynamics will always be a recipe for success.
The premise of Average Joe is pretty basic on its surface; while mourning his father's death, the titular character discovers said father had a whole other life involving drugs, money, and an angry mob looking for their Lamborghini.
It's basic but also a lot to process, and we're going through the motions of discovery right alongside Joe, who is every bit the average man the title describes.
By all accounts, Joe is a good man. He's got a loving wife and daughter and friends that he adores. His life doesn't seem extraordinary, but it's enough to keep him happy.

BET+’s new darkly comic thriller Average Joe may or may not be better than Netflix’s Ozark — I never loved Ozark, but maybe you did and so be it — but the gap between the two shows isn’t as great as the inevitable gap in coverage would seem to suggest.
Average Joe and Ozark are both highly derivative pieces of violent, ethically twisty pulp made somewhat distinctive by their regional specificity, irritatingly washed-out cinematography and sitcom-honed leading men repressing their natural timing to play a tamped-down everyman.
Though it doesn’t yet realize aspirations that could generously be described as Jim Thompson meets August Wilson — that’s a show I would very much watch — Average Joe has the feeling of a potential breakout for BET+, though it’s impossible to know what a “breakout for BET+” would mean in this landscape.

NBC’s Quantum Leap didn’t jump out in the ratings Monday, instead pulling in so-so numbers for its debut. CBS’ NCIS, meanwhile, opened its 19th season with its smallest same-day audience ever.
Returning series on the broadcast networks Monday — the first night of the 2022-23 season — were uniformly down from their year-ago premieres. A double bill of Monday Night Football, with separate games running on ABC and ESPN/ESPN2, likely helped depress viewing on other networks.
Quantum Leap, a revival/sequel to the 1989-93 sci-fi series, opened with 3.35 million viewers and a 0.48 rating among adults 18-49 coming out of The Voice (6.12 million, 0.67). The opening for Quantum Leap is slightly behind that of Ordinary Joe (3.9 million, 0.52) in the same spot in 2021. McG, who has been busy producing movies for Netflix, returned to broadcast television this season with three pilots on three different networks for his Wonderland Sound and Vision banner, True Lies, based on James Cameron’s 1994 movie, on CBS; Not Dead Yet starring Gina Rodriguez on ABC; and the Jensen Ackles-produced Supernatural prequel The Winchesters on the CW. Over the last couple of days, all three were picked up to series. Additionally, BET+ just picked up Wonderland’s series Average Joe, created by Robb Cullen and starring Deon Cole.

The company’s executive team includes McG’s longtime partner, Mary Viola, who serves as President, and EVP Corey Marsh.
