If your grandfather wrote “Citizen Kane,” you could imagine that might be a helluva shadow to escape from. But Ben Mankiewicz has been able to shine his own light for the past 17 years — and shine a light on films worthy of discovery — as a host on Turner Classic Movies. The 53-year-old broadcaster, who also contributes reported segments to CBS Sunday Morning and co-hosts The Young Turks, never knew Herman J. Mankiewicz, who died in 1953. But the stories of his grandfather’s life and his commission from Orson Welles to write “Citizen Kane” have been passed down from generation to generation. Imagine Ben and his family’s astonishment that his grandfather’s life has now received the big-screen biopic treatment, courtesy of David Fincher’s “Mank.”
“We thought then, what we thought now,” Ben, who learned of the existence of Jack Fincher’s “Mank” screenplay 10 to 15 years ago, said. “Which is...

Notable Tyt programming includes its flagship The Young Turks news broadcast, hosted by co-founder Cenk Uygur, as well as John Iadarola’s The Damage Report. The network has also interviewed 2020 Presidential candidates Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, as well as Andrew Yang.

Veteran French director Bertrand Tavernier (“Round Midnight”) – president and director of the Institut Lumière and Lumière Festival, which he co-manages with Cannes’ Thierry Frémaux – has played a pivotal role in restoring classic French films and defending the importance of French directors, such as Claude Autant Lara, Henri Decoin and André Cayatte, who were attacked by the film critics of the Nouvelle Vague.
He says his aim is to strike a new view of this period of French film history, citing the example of Francis Ford Coppola who praised and rehabilitated British filmmakers such as Michael Powell, similarly written off by some critics.
In 2016 Tavernier released his feature documentary “My Journey Through French Cinema,” and follow-up 8-episode TV series released in 2018, both of which are inspired by Martin Scorsese’s personal documentaries on American and Italian cinema.

President Donald Trump trolled his opponents on Sunday, posting a video montage of celebrities, pundits and prognosticators confidently predicting his defeat in the 2016 presidential election.
The video, which Trump posted on Twitter, begins with a clip from “The Simpsons” that parodied Trump’s infamous ride down a Trump Tower escalator in June 2015, where he first announced his presidential run. A still from the video reveals early supporters holding signs saying “paid” a reference to Trump’s earliest strategy to make sure that his crowd sizes were sufficient.

Jim Carrey’s vivid, politically-motivated painting jag hasn’t abated just yet, and the artistically inclined actor has once again turned his attention to some of the nation’s top Republicans. In his latest painting — revealed, as ever, on his Twitter account — Carrey goes after House Republicans, including Devin Nunes, and what appears to be renderings of Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. The topic at hand: breakfast. Kind of.
In his accompanying caption, Carrey writes, “Every morning Trump makes special breakfast sandwiches for House Republicans. Devin Nunes eagerly finishes first and always asks for seconds!” The imagery is as expected, a colorful and cartoon-ish take on some of the country’s biggest political names, none of whom appear to be impressing Carrey these days. They’re just the latest subjects Carrey has tackled in his art, as he’s recently churned out similar portraits of Sean Hannity, Rudy Giuliani, Sarah Huckabee Sanders,...

To truly understand the impact climate change is having on our planet, it helps to take a trip to the True North. That's the philosophy espoused by progressive-leaning news organization The Young Turks, which has produced a new docu-series that has launched on Go90.
True North follows an Arctic expedition co-led by John Iadarola, who co-hosts The Young Turks' ThinkTank channel, and Chavala Madlena, an investigative journalist who has appeared on The Young Turks' news show in the past. Together, Iadarola and Madlena take a trip to the frigid polar region in order to take in the natural splendor around them, connect with some of the local natives, and examine the ways in which climate change has impacted our northernmost climate.
A preview of their journey can be seen in a trailer for True North. The trailer premiered last month.

After kicking off a $2 million crowdfunding campaign last December to hire new reporters that it said would work to keep the Trump administration and establishment politicians in check, progressive news organization The Young Turks has launched today a brand new division dubbed Tyt Investigates.
Tyt Investigates will be dedicated to original reporting on national business and political issues that don’t get covered the way that they should, according to parent company Tyt Network. The division will feature no analysis or opinion -- as on the network’s other popular channels -- but instead focus on exclusive, objective journalism. Original stories will roll out this week on Tyt Investigates’ just-launched YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter pages.

Comedian Zach Anner tends to show up on our radar from time to time, and for his latest project, he is tackling an issue that is (literally) one of America's hottest topics. Anner is the host of Earth Your While, a series about climate change that is available through SoulPancake.

Earlier in April, YouTube announced that the live feature on its mobile would become available to anyone with at least 1,000 subscribers. The feature had previously been limited to creators with at least 10,000 subscribers, so the update has opened up YouTube’s mobile live offering to a large batch of potential users.
Based on recent movement on the App Store charts, those users are very excited about the new tool at their disposal. After the update went live, YouTube became the top free app on iTunes. At the time of this post, it sits in the #2 position, ahead of competitors Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.
YouTube first added live streaming to its mobile app during VidCon in 2016, but it initially limited the feature to a select group of top-of-the-line creators, including The Young Turks and Alex Wassabi. In February 2017, the video site granted mobile live access to channels with five-digit subscriber sums,...

Tyt Network, the progressive digital news network behind flagship show The Young Turks, announced today a staggering milestone: its shows have been viewed 6 billion time since the company’s online launch in 2005.
Perhaps more impressive is the pace at which this stat has been achieved. Between 2007 and 2012, for instance, the network accumulated 2 billion views. But in the era of President Donald Trump, Tyt Network clocked 2 billion online views in 2016 alone. The company says it had more online views than CNN, MSNBC, and Fox last month, citing figures from comScore, and more unique viewers than all of those networks combined among audiences aged 13 to 24. Across all social platforms, Tyt Network says it amasses more than 200 million views per month.

The mobile livestreaming function that YouTube announced last summer at VidCon, and which was initially only available to a handful of creators including The Young Turks, the SacconeJolys, and Alex Wassabi, is going wide.
YouTube said today that the feature is now available to every creator with more than 10,000 subscribers -- and that it will be available “soon” to all creators on the platform. “It’s a launch that’ll put the power of live streaming in the hands of hundreds of thousands of talented creators,” YouTube wrote in a blog post, “giving them a more intimate and spontaneous way to share their thoughts, lives, and creativity.”

During the 2016 presidential primaries, progressive news organization The Young Turks championed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders by interviewing him multiple times and launching several initiatives on his behalf. Sanders ended up ceding the Democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton, but his campaign successfully challenged establishment politics and awakened many voters to the political reality around them.
That sort of education is in line with The Young Turks’ own viewers, and the network is taking action to make sure the policies of the Sanders campaign continue to receive attention. It has announced Justice Democrats, an organization co-led by former Sanders team members that will aid progressive political candidates in order to challenge the Democratic establishment.
The four co-founders of Justice Democrats are Cenk Uygur, co-founder of The Young Turks; Saikat Chakrabarti the Director of Organizing Technology for the Sanders campaign; Zack Exley (a Senior Adviser for the Sanders campaign; and Kyle Kulinski, a talk radio host.

Digital news outlet The Young Turks (Tyt) is trying to raise two million dollars to fund the creation of four new investigative journalism teams, and with three weeks left before that crowdfunding campaign’s Inauguration Day deadline, it has passed the $500,000 mark. To celebrate that milestone, The Young Turks has announced two new hires to its team: Nomiki Konst has joined the progressive-leaning network as an investigative reporter, while Shaun King has come on as a commentator.
Konst is a political activist who hosts her own show on SiriusXM radio. In an introductory chat with Young Turks co-founder Cenk Uygur, she praised the efforts of Tyt’s first journalist hire, Jordan Chariton, who has reported from newsworthy locations like Flint and Standing Rock. As the next addition to Tyt’s investigative team, Konst will add to Chariton’s work with some of her own.

With nearly 3.2 million followers on their main YouTube channel, The Young Turks is one of few online news programs that’s found a dedicated audience among millennials who care about politics and foreign affairs but have no use for the talking head carousel of cable news. Steve Oh, Tyt’s chief business officer, told TheWrap that what’s working online — but doesn’t work with cable news — is that Tyt determines the content of its programming solely based on what its highly engaged and communicative audience wants, and not a corporate parent or advertising partner. “The main thing I would tell CEOs of.

2016 was a busy year for The Young Turks. After hiring reporter Jordan Chariton at the end of 2015, Cenk Uygur’s progressive news network provided wall-to-wall coverage of the 2016 presidential election, and provided key coverage of major events like the Democratic National Convention, the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, and the Indiana lead poisoning scandal.
With a new presidential regime set to launch in January 2017, The Young Turks’ work is far from over, and the network wants to greatly increase the size of its news team in order to provide even more political coverage for its viewers. To that end, Uygur and his team have launched a crowdfunding campaign through which they hope to raise $2 million to support the creation of four new investigative news teams.

On November 8th, the United States turned its eyes to the results of the 2016 presidential election, and one place where its citizens tuned in for their political coverage was The Young Turks. The progressive-leaning news channel had a big night; across three separate live streams -- one each on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter -- it drew more than 4.5 million total hits, smashing its own viewership record.
The bulk of The Young Turks’ viewership came on YouTube, where its hosts, including Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, led a 12-hour broadcast that broke down the election results. At its peak viewership, The Young Turks’ YouTube stream counted 132,979 concurrent viewers. While that is a smaller figure compared to what YouTube drew during the three presidential debates, it is the biggest audience ever for a Young Turks stream, eclipsing the 72,635 viewers the news channel drew for its March 2016 interview with progressive presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

The Oval Office is known for its round shape, so what better way to shoot it than in 360 degrees? That’s the idea behind The Mobile Oval, a new series written and directed by Canvas Media Studios co-founder Bernie Su and produced by Canvas and The Young Turks.
The Mobile Oval was filmed on the newly-built Oval Office set at YouTube Space La, which is equipped to support 360-degree videos. In the case of The Mobile Oval, however, YouTube’s set isn’t standing in for the presidential workspace itself, but for a mobile replica that can travel across the country for President Bill Clinton. The show, led by a cast of young leads, shows the West Wing-esque squabbles of the Mobile Oval’s staffers as they debate the last two decades of American politics.
The first two episodes of The Mobile Oval have been posted to The Young Turks’ YouTube channel.

YouTube has picked up a new ally in its battle against the music industry. Cenk Uygur, the co-founder and co-host of progressive news and commentary channel The Young Turks, criticized several of the arguments recording industry big shots have wielded in their fight against YouTube.
In a 10-minute video, Uygur primarily focuses on the arguments presented by music manager Irving Azoff in a May 2016 open letter. In his letter, Azoff attacked YouTube’s Content ID system, which he called “meaningless,” and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s “safe harbor” provision, which he said gives YouTube an “unfair advantage.” Several top music acts, such as Taylor Swift and U2, co-signed Azoff’s comments.
For Uygur, those arguments don’t hold up. He notes that sites like YouTube "can't police the entire Internet” makes a comparison to Twitter, which would never survive if it were to be held responsible for the comments on its platform.

No one could have predicted that the big story coming out of the first day of the Republican National Convention would revolve around speech plagiarism.
