Paul McCartney has been one of the UK’s wealthiest musicians for the last 60 years due to his Beatles royalties. Now he has reportedly become the first UK musician to become a billionaire ($1.27bn).
The Sunday Times Rich List, published annually, reports that Sir Paul has seen his immense fortune increase by £50m ($63.5m) in the past year – thanks to Beyonce’s cover of his 1968 song Blackbird, the ever-lucrative value of the Beatles catalogue, plus his own continued touring into his 82nd year.
The Fab Four Beatles all made fortunes with their record-breaking record sales in the 1960s, but it was the songwriting partnership of McCartney and John Lennon who earned the really big money on royalties. McCartney added to this with his subsequent band Wings, writing the James Bond theme Live and Let Die, as well as his solo career.

Writer/director Veena Sud‘s Hulu movie “The Stranger” is a one-night thriller that allows for only a couple of scenes before rideshare driver Clare (Maika Monroe) realizes she’s made a horrible mistake picking up passenger Carl (Dane DeHaan). From that point, the movie is a nonstop adrenaline rush and so perfectly paced that the most surprising thing about it is that it didn’t begin as a feature film at all — this new Hulu movie is a re-edit of a series Sud initially made for Quibi.
Before its swift demise, Quibi was a platform designed for people to watch shows in 10-minute episodes on their phones, with content presented in dual simultaneous aspect ratios so that one could watch the episodes either vertically or horizontally. The unique format provided filmmakers like Sud, Mark Pellington, and Catherine Hardwicke opportunities to experiment with new ways of storytelling; it also gave...

While Drive to Survive has sped to a successful six seasons on the Netflix platform and been given credit for a surge in interest in motor racing, particular in the US, the same production team has stumbled to a halt with the tennis world, and now The Times of London reports that documentary series Break Point has been cancelled after just two seasons, citing poor ratings and lack of access to the sport’s leading figures.

Netflix has ordered an untitled documentary about the Canadian exit of the Montreal Expos Major League Baseball club nearly 20 years ago.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the film as part of a partnership with Montreal-based indie producer Attraction. The greenlight from Netflix Canada also comes as the streaming giant expands into sports-related content after the success of the Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive and golf docuseries Full Swing.
Netflix has followed that up with its first live sports event, a nine-hole golf match called the Netflix Cup and to feature athletes familiar to viewers of Drive to Survive and Full Swing. Netflix is joining a number of other subscription video on-demand services — including Peacock, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and Max — in offering live sports to its subscribers, and without embracing expensive rights packages.

Founded in 2012, Paris-based WTFilms, run by Gregory Chambet and Dimitri Stephanides, has built a strong reputation as a sales agent for break-out genre pics and has recently diversified into production, to access hit projects. As competition ramps up for more ambitious projects with strong theatrical potential, Chambet decided to move to Los Angeles in mid-2023, while Stephanides remains based in Paris.
“At WTFilms, we aim to continue to work on both sides of the Atlantic,” explains Chambet. “In the current market it’s important to invest in projects by talented directors, with innovative concepts, budgeted above $5 million. It makes sense for me to be based here because we work a lot with partners here and L.A. is a key talent hub. We’re on the lookout for talent from all around the world. There are really exciting genre directors popping up everywhere – in North America and also in Latin America and Asia.

Usually when you turn to a TV channel or streaming platform that has a live sporting event, they won’t point you in the direction of another rightsholder. After all, why secure exclusive rights if you can’t hoard them for your own platform?
Roku and Formula E are taking an entirely different approach for their new deal, which kicks off Jan. 13 from Mexico City.
It is a significant partnership, marking Roku’s first ever exclusive live sports rights, and giving Formula E, a fast-growing electric racing circuit, a massive streaming platform as it seeks to expand in the U.S. With 75.8 million active accounts in nearly half of U.S. broadband homes, Roku has the scale that few others in the streaming space can match.

Roundtable Entertainment has announced that they’re teaming up with director Mark Pellington – whose credits include Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies, Henry Poole Is Here, The Last Word, The Severing, and Survive, among many other projects – for the adrenaline-fueled human trafficking revenge thriller Mom.
Scripted by Brent Jordan, Mom tells the compelling story of a single mother embarking on a daring cross-country rescue mission, piecing together clues in the search for her teenage daughter who has fallen victim to the horrors of human trafficking.
Casting Director Lisa Zagoria, who assembled the cast for the Best Picture winner Coda, will be handling the casting of this film as well.
Pellington had this to say about the project: “Mom is a fast-moving story of protection and revenge. The film explores the true price of violence and the cost of justice, when an ordinary mom is pushed to an extraordinary place. This is a muscular,...

It sounds like the pitch for a reality show – or a horror film. What happens when you put a group of attractive single adults together on a boat and cast them adrift in the Atlantic Ocean? But it actually describes anthropologist Santiago Genovés’ controversial, headline-generating social experiment. Genovés wanted to study the relationship between sex, violence, and the competition for limited resources. His bold attempt to study human behavior in a unique environment didn’t pan out the way he expected. But it did go on to inspire the new Discovery series Survive the Raft.
The crazy experiment that inspired ‘Survive the Raft’
Survive the Raft brings together nine diverse Americans who are challenged to spend the next 21 days sailing around Panama’s Pearl Islands. The cast members include a beauty pageant queen turned outspoken vegan, a self-described Karen, and a Black rabbi, among others. To survive – and win the...

Discovery Channel’s released details on the nine contestants who will be attempting to survive together onboard the Acali II on the first season of Survive the Raft. Hosted by former NFL player and US Army Green Beret Nate Boyer, the unscripted reality competition series is set to premiere on July 30, 2023 on Discovery Channel.
Season one will consist of nine episodes, with Discovery Channel releasing this description of the new series:
“Survive the Raft follows nine diverse contestants who set sail on the Acali II for twenty-one days to test whether personal interest will sabotage the team’s chance to win a fortune together. The stakes are high: with each successful mission, the team earns money towards a communal cash pot that will be divided equally by those who make it to the end. Every week, participants are tasked with completing physical and intellectual challenges designed to disrupt and divide the group.

Punk supergroup L.S. Dunes released their Lego-themed video for “Grey Veins” last month. Now, Lego has apparently contacted the band’s label Fantasy Records to remove the clip.
Frank Iero, of My Chemical Romance fame and a guitarist in L.S. Dunes, took to social media to issue a statement regarding Lego’s legal action. More than anything, Iero was offended that a company that encourages creativity such as Lego, of which he’s been a lifelong loyal customer, would try to stamp out one his own creative endeavors.
Along with photos of his Lego VIP card and pics from Legoland as proof of his dedication to the tiny bricks, Iero posted the following open letter to Lego on Twitter:
“Dear @lego, why are you having your lawyers call my record label (@fantasyrecords) and demand we take down the @LSDunes music video we made for our song Grey Veins?...

Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has acquired U.S. rights to the adventure thriller Survive, starring Emmy nominees Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) and Corey Hawkins (BlacKkKlansman), slating it for release on VOD on June 20th.
The film directed by by Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), which is based on the same-name 2012 novel by Alex Morel, was originally conceived as a “movie in chapters” for the now-defunct streaming platform Quibi, with its story broken out into segments of 10 minutes or less in length. It tells the story of what happens when two ordinary people, Jane (Turner) and Paul (Hawkins), have to fight for their lives when their airplane crashes on a remote snow-covered mountain, leaving them as the only survivors. Soon, this unlikely duo will have to find a way to get back to society, all while Jane struggles with her own personal demons, and Paul does everything he can to keep...

“Pellington’s boldest and most audacious film to date, an unclassifiable dance movie that plays like a cross between Wim Wenders’ Pina and Saw…Pellington moves beyond the limitations of narrative to get at something primal and raw—but also ultimately transcendent and life affirming—that perfectly conveys the transformative effects of grief and loss.”
– Jim Hemphill, Filmmaker Magazine
“Pellington’s continuing rumination on the progress of grief: now a wildfire, now a slow, creeping cancer, always a constant companion…the answers to The Severing are written in flesh and bone.”
– Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
Kino Lorber presents Mark Pellington’s The Severing, a cathartic dance movement piece created in collaboration with the brilliant choreographer Nina McNeely (Gaspar Noe’s Climax) and rising Dutch cinematographer Evelin Rei.

HBO’s latest hit series The Last of Us now officially has a soundtrack for its first season, a massive, 66-song compilation of all the music scoring the post-apocalyptic tale. Check it out below.
After working on the original The Last of Us video game, composer Gustavo Santaolalla returns for the HBO series, joined by fellow artist David Fleming. In an upcoming interview with Consequence, Santaolalla describes his approach to the soundtrack, saying, “The process of adapting, it was more in a way like craftwork than actually a new creation, because the themes were there, those things are there, like the characters, it wasn’t about creating a new job, it wasn’t about finding what is interesting. For example, in seeing how Pascal and Bella, they’re different than the actors that played the voices, but at the same time, they keep the soul of the characters intact.”
