For children, summer always seems full of endless possibility. The breaks from school, the family trips, the time spent at camp or reading books and watching movies.
These days, the closest thing we have is summer entertainment — the cultural distraction from otherwise having fewer breaks, shifting travel (wedding season!), and maybe not as many of those life-changing adventures that a lot of summertime stories seem to be based on. Summer movies offer a chance to go out and cool down while summer TV is the best way to wind down and stay in after days of work, travel, and relentless heat.
Along with detailed monthly previews (here’s May), IndieWire pulled together a summer TV preview with 15 brand-new shows premiering over the next couple months. Some are pulled from existing material — Star Wars, “Sausage Party,” novels, a true story about the L.A. Clippers — while others defy categorization. Some we...

If watching animated food items getting it on tickles your funny bone, we have some good news: Prime Video's Sausage Party sequel series, Foodtopia, has announced a premiere date.
The "hole season" (see what they did there?), which will continue the adventure of the various sentient groceries we met in 2016's R-rated hit, will be available to stream of Prime from July 11.
We're still waiting on a trailer, but an unsurprisingly crude first poster has been released featuring the characters holding up a... yeah, this doesn't really need an explanation, does it?
Check out the artwork at the link below, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

The first movie proved to be surprisingly popular with critics, earning a very impressive 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Robert Downey Jr. plays Australian actor Kirk Lazarus in his Oscar-nominated role in Tropic Thunder. Downey Jr.’s Lazarus takes the extreme step in Method acting and undergoes pigmentation alteration surgery to play an African-American man. The role was clearly a satire that mocked the extreme lengths some actors were willing to go to for a role. Downey Jr.’s co-star in the film, Danny McBride, revealed how the actor stayed in character the whole time.

Downey Jr.’s portrayal in the film received criticism for donning Blackface, but his acting in the film was praised by many. He was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that year, which he lost to Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight.

Last week, news broke that Bill Hader would voice the lead in Warner Bros. new fully animated movie The Cat in the Hat, based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 classic children’s book. Today, the studio confirmed that the film will hit theaters in March 2026, with Hader joined by current SNL player Bowen Yang and longtime SNL writer Paula Pell, as well as Quinta Brunson, Matt Berry, and Xochitl Gomez.
Hader is a seasoned voice actor whose talent has won him roles in Sausage Party, Toy Story 4, and Bob’s Burgers, so it’s easy to see, or rather, hear, why WB would turn to Hader for its new Cat in the Hat movie — but in this case, Warner Bros. execs also had a visual aid, though it’s up for debate whether it helped Hader’s case or hurt it.

Please consider this edition of Fiscal Spotlight a public service announcement warning you that there are a mere eight days remaining before Valentine’s Day. Cutting it close for any truly bigass plans, but still plenty of time to pick up chalky Russell Stovers and mass-manufactured fluffy teddy bear squishies from Cvs. And yes, you’ll need to buy a card and figure out yet another way to poeticize and artfully obfuscate the same basic premise: “Thank you for not valuing your autonomous personhood enough to leave me, which would thus double the cost of many of my critical domestic financial obligations.”
Just kidding! We love love. We’re nice people who love our partners and pets, of course, but as connoisseurs of the arts we also love love as the animating dramatic element in our favorite stories, songs and celebrity TikTok meltdowns. Which is why for this most amorous...

Seth Rogen’s production company Point Grey Pictures is teaming up with the studio that backed its raunchy, R-rated hits like “Neighbors,” “Good Boys” and “Blockers.”
Universal Pictures has forged a first-look film partnership with Point Grey Pictures, the company that Rogen co-founded with Evan Goldberg in 2011. James Weaver, a longtime producing partner, is the president of Point Grey, which is named after the Vancouver secondary school where Rogen and Goldberg first met.
“Seth, Evan and James have developed a filmmaking brand entirely their own,” said Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Studio Group and chief content officer. “Whether we’re watching their stories of teenage turtles, anthropomorphic groceries, or foul-mouthed sixth graders making epically bad decisions, they always manage to blend Point Grey’s signature edgy humor with humanity and heart.”
Point Grey’s recent slate includes the Prime Video series “The Boys” and spinoffs “Gen V” and the newly announced “Mexico.

Features the voices of: Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Will Forte, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Josh Gad, Harvey Guillén, Rob Riggle, Brett Gelman, Jamie Demetriou, Sofia Vergara | Written by Dan Perrault | Directed by Josh Greenbaum
Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie), this inspired comedy takes the previously family-friendly talking dog movie genre and turns it into an outrageously filthy, frequently gasp-inducing, R-rated laugh riot. It just might be the funniest film of the year.
Will Ferrell (sounding a lot like Paul Rudd) voices Reggie, a hopelessly naïve Border Terrier who can’t see that his owner, Doug (Will Forte) is a hateful, selfish loser who despises him. One day, Doug drives Reggie several miles away and abandons him, though Reggie still thinks they are playing their favourite game, “Fetch and f**k”, so called because that’s what Doug yells, every time Reggie finds his way home again.

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the Grammy-winning Isley Brothers who helped create some of the most memorable songs in American musical history, has died. His brother Ron confirmed the news to Deadline. Rudolph Isley was 84.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Ron Isley said of his brother’s passing, “There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place.”
The Isley Brothers have had various lineups through the years, but Rudy was with the band from its beginnings in the late 1950s to his retirement from music in 1989, when he took up a Christian ministry. During that time, they recorded such classics as “Shout,” cowritten by Rudy, which in 1959 became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The record sold over a million copies. Exclusive: Amidst one of the most creatively fertile periods in his career to date, actor Michael Cera has taken on new agents at CAA.
The in-demand Canadian actor is coming off of a standout role in Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s triumphant live-action take on the Mattel doll for Warner Bros, which has thus far grossed over $1.4B worldwide and seems likely to figure heavily in the awards race to come.
In addition to the highest-grossing film of the year, the fantasy comedy penned by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach has set records as the top-grossing title ever released by Warner Bros, and the highest-grossing film from a solo female director. Starring alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Cera portrayed Allan, the lovably awkward best friend of Ken who, unlike the central characters, has no counterpart in his universe.

Warner Bros. isn’t happy with industry consensus appointing “Gran Turismo” as the weekend’s top-grossing film, beating “Barbie.”. It will be small solace, but Warners’ “Meg 2: The Trench” is the dominant title on this week’s VOD charts.
“Meg 2” moved to PVOD after 21 days — a quick turnaround previously reserved for Max exclusives and/or lower-budget titles like “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” and “House Party.” However, “Meg 2” is the $130 million sequel to a film that grossed over $500 million worldwide.
It dropped Friday and quickly reached #1 at iTunes. It also is #1 at Vudu, more impressive since its chart covers seven days and “it “Meg 2” was available for only three of them. Google Play, as always lagging a few days behind, has it at #3 and rising.
“Meg 2” opened two weeks after “Barbie,” yet came to PVOD at least 11 days ahead of Greta Gerwig’s #1 film for 2023. Though not confirmed, the PVOD...

Producer Erik Feig could have been describing “SuperBad” or “Good Boys” when he outlined his new movie to Universal, pitching them on backing his mid-budget film with a detailed slideshow that included everything from ideas for TikTok promotions to potential merchandising. “This is a raunchy, cinematic comedy with heart, about finding your people and your purpose,” a slideshow for the Picturestart founder’s new project, “Strays,” read. Except, in this case, there’s a twist. “It just happens to star a pack of dogs.”
It’s getting harder and harder to convince studios to take the plunge when it comes to movies that aren’t based on toys or comic books. That’s something Feig knows all too well, having previously served as the head of Lionsgate’s film division.

Seth Rogen is a mainstay in the entertainment industry, an actor, writer, producer, and filmmaker who first rose to fame as the goofy star of movies like Knocked Up and Superbad. Over the past decade, Rogen has consistently honed his skills as a writer and producer, attaching his name to a variety of projects that he believes in. Rogen has a known affinity for comic book films, which has led many fans to wonder if the actor would ever consider working with Marvel. However, in a recent interview, Rogen revealed that he’s not very interested in becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One of the genres that has struggled most in the post-pandemic landscape theatrically is comedy. Divorced of movies connected to major franchises, straight-up comedy has had a tough go outside of streaming in recent years, with only romcoms like "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise" truly breaking out as unqualified success stories. Be that as it may, Universal Pictures is entering the late summer fold with an R-rated comedy in the form of "Strays," which features an A-list cast as talking dogs. Will the gimmick work? It just might.
Box Office Pro currently has the film taking in between $15 and $25 million on its opening weekend next week. That would put it in a tight race with Warner Bros. and DC's "Blue Beetle," which is eyeing a $13 to $18 million start. Barbie and Oppenheimer continue their domination of the marketplace as they are poised to take in $51 million and $27 million respectively (per Deadline). For Barbie that third week number puts it above the first week of Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train which opened to $30 million on this weekend last year. By end of day Sunday, Barbie should be hovering around the $460 million mark at the domestic box office while worldwide numbers will possibly be over that billion dollar mark. That is quite impressive for any movie, let alone one based on an over 60 year old brand.
Oppenheimer is still dominating its IMAX screens and should see a weekend take at $27 million which would put the tale of the formation of the atomic bomb at around $230 million domestic and around $530 million worldwide. Again, quite impressive for any movie, let alone a 3-hour, R rated biopic. I just really hope this movie has the momentum into awards season.

August is always a weird time for movie fans, but the current strike-related ambiguity that has brought Hollywood to a screeching halt makes this month’s entertainment landscape even harder to navigate. Normally, August is the bridge between the peak of the summer blockbuster season and the beginning of the fall festival circuit. Sure, there are always a few big studio projects rolling out in theaters, but many cinephiles begin to look ahead to the slate of awards contenders debuting in Venice, Toronto, and Telluride.
This August’s theatrical lineup follows a predictable pattern — while nobody is comparing “Strays” and “Blue Beetle” to “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” there are still major studio releases to be found. But the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has thrown the entire fall release schedule into limbo. With actors unable to promote their projects, many of autumn’s biggest scheduled releases could end up being delayed. While nothing is certain,...

When director Jeff Rowe (co-director of “The Mitchells vs. the Machines”) and producer Seth Rogen (“Sausage Party”) first talked about making their animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” edgier and scarier than the rest of the beloved franchise, they both seized on “Jurassic Park” as a touchstone.
“One of my favorite movies as a kid was ‘Jurassic Park,’ and I saw that when I was seven in a theater because I love dinosaurs,” Rowe told IndieWire. “And the opening of that film is terrifying — it scared the shit out of me. I was crying and immediately wanted to leave the theater, but I stayed through it all. It successfully established the Raptors as one of the coolest villains ever, and it established a world where bad things could happen.
“Seth had a similar experience and he said a great thing: ‘Jurassic Park’ is like a monster movie for kids.

For the first time in seven years, the heroes in a half-shell are back on the big screen as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" hits theaters. But unlike the most recent Michael Bay-produced iteration of the franchise, Paramount is bringing the Turtles back to animation. Also unlike the Bay films, this latest movie doesn't come with a Bayhem-inflated budget, as it appears the studio was incredibly thrifty this time around. So much so that the movie's box office success is all but guaranteed even in the earliest stages of its run.
According to Variety and several other trade publications, director Jeff Rowe's "Mutant Mayhem" carries a shockingly low $70 million budget. Granted, that is before marketing, but such a figure is so much lower than other recent animated hits that it's a little hard to wrap one's head around the figure. Pixar's "Elemental" carried a $200 million budget,...

One of this summer’s biggest surprises is the pure entertainment to be found scene-by-scene in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” an inspired take on a once-blockbuster property that had previously been collecting dust in the IP toy box. The spark behind this series comes from co-writers and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who apply the same irreverence of “Sausage Party” or Amazon’s adaptation of superhero satire “The Boys” to the story of four pizza-loving turtles that have been brought to stiff live-action existence or in drab animation (2007’s “Tmnt”).

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been an unusual mainstay in popular culture for decades, so they might be seen as occupying an unusual subgenre unto themselves. Originally created in 1984, the Turtles were intended as a satire of the ultra-gritty superhero comics of the time, Frank Miller's "Daredevil" comics in particular. The absurd title and weird premise, however, caught on, and by 1990, the Turtles were starring in TV shows, video games, and a live-action feature film. In 2023, the Turtles are entering what might be their 20th unique continuity with the release of Jeff Rowe's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem." They have come a long way since their superhero-inflected origins.
"Mutant Mayhem" was co-written and co-produced by Seth Rogen, who also plays the voice of Bebop, a mutant warthog. As a producer, Rogen has had a long, prolific, and quite interesting career. His movies tend to be lightweight...

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.

It seemed like the end of the road for the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
The popular kids franchise had inspired a half-dozen movies of declining quality, with the live-action 2016 adventure “Out of the Shadows” suffering from the kind of withering reviews and bad box office returns that derail a film series.
But Paramount and Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins and Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation president Ramsey Naito had an offbeat idea for how they could make the Turtles cool again.
That involved tapping Seth Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg, the duo behind “Superbad” and “This is the End,” to give the characters an adolescent flair. It didn’t matter that the pair’s main experience with animation, the very R-rated “Sausage Party,” was made for moviegoers of voting age and not for the pre-teens who are the biggest fans of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael.

The underperformance of “Bros” this past fall has seemingly stoked a passion to reclaim the R-rated comedy’s place at the movies. “Joy Ride” is one of four rescue efforts being deployed this summer. Originally titled “The Joy F**k Club” – a wink at the 1993 benchmark for Asian American representation in mainstream film that it clearly aims to stand alongside – Adele Lim’s directorial debut, produced by “Superbad” writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, follows a mismatched quartet on their comically hazardous trip east.

Just how twisted is the new “Sausage Party” sequel series? Even star Kristen Wiig is shocked by it.
The upcoming “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” series is set to premiere on Prime Video in 2024, with original voice actors Wiig, Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton all returning for more tasty fun. The team behind Sausage Party: Foodtopia, the sequel series to 2016’s Sausage Party, is cooking up something wickedly funny for the 8-episode follow-up to the most talked about food fight in cinema. Speaking with Empire, Seth Rogen says the series will likely strike audiences as “unbelievably shocking” as the writing team goes above and beyond to bring the property to the next level.

“Nimona” is nearly here. And before it hits the streaming service next month, Netflix has just unleashed a new trailer for the animated feature that gives viewers a taste of its world and introduces the titular shapeshifting teen (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz). You can watch the new teaser below.
The trailer is pretty inventive, with a paper cutout introduction to the world of “Nimona” – it takes place in The Kingdom, a kind of futuristic medieval society that has been trained to fear a race of mythical creatures. (They have erected a massive wall – sound familiar?) A disgraced, one-armed knight who was framed for murder (Riz Ahmed), winds up befriending Nimona, who turns out to be one of these creatures – she can shapeshift into virtually anything or anyone. Together, they both are searching for acceptance – and to clear their respective names.

Universal has moved “Strays” from June 9 to August 18, placing the R-rated talking-animal comedy in the same general release slot where the likes of “Good Boys” and “We’re The Millers” found fortune and glory in years prior. Now, instead of opening against “Transformers: Rise of the Beast,” itself something of a talking-animal tentpole, it’ll square off against DC’s “Blue Beetle.”
It will replace the untitled comedy from the Please Don’t Destroy comedy group. That film, starring “Saturday Night Live” vets Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, will now go straight to Peacock on Nov. 17. It further highlights the challenges in releasing big new comedies in theaters since you still might need big new stars.
