Set in New York just after WWII, Truman Capote‘s reflective portrayal of a wealthy 17-year-old ‘Summer Crossing’ is one of the books that made a difference to Scarlett Johansson. She loves Capote’s first novel so much that she will adapt his near-lost novel. The film is Johansson’s feature-length directorial debut (she has previously directed a short, These Vagabond Shoes, starring Kevin Bacon). Penned in the 1940s, ‘Summer Crossing’ was lost for more than 50 years before being rescued and rediscovered at an auction in 2004. The project was announced as her directorial debut nearly two years ago. Johansson said in a statement: Several years ago...

Cannes: Scarlett Johansson to Direct Adaptation of Truman Capote's Near-Lost Novel 'Summer Crossing'
Scarlett Johansson has signed on to helm an adaptation of Truman Capote's near-lost novel "Summer Crossing," which centers on a teenage debutante who falls in love with and pursues a Jewish parking attendant instead of traveling to Paris in the summer of 1945. This will be Johansson's first feature as a director. "Summer Crossing" was never published by Capote himself, who scrapped the manuscript altogether. But a janitor in his building salvaged it from the trash bins, and in 2004 the work appeared for auction and was published. Oleg Boyko ("Sin City: A Dame to Kill For") is set to produce, with Aldamisa Entertainment shopping the film at Cannes. (Johansson recently became attached to Aldamisa title "Chef," to be directed by Jon Favreau.) Johansson has previously directed short film "These Vagabond Shoes," starring Kevin Bacon, which was made available as a bonus to 2009's anthology "New York, I Love You." Watch below.

Despite her young age, turning just twenty-seven in a few days’ time, Scarlett Johansson already has a slew of major roles in her credits, along with a long list of awards and nominations to her name, including a BAFTA for her part in Lost in Translation, and four Golden Globe nominations.
Johansson is now set to make her feature directorial debut, The Playlist report, in an adaptation of Truman Capote’s Summer Crossing, an early Capote novel that was published for the first time posthumously in 2005, having been set aside after a decade of adjustments following its conception in 1943.
“Taking place over the course of a hot summer in 1945 New York City, the story centers on the 17 year old Grady, from a well-to-do family living on Fifth Avenue, who enters a torrid affair with a parking attendant, winds up marrying him, and becomes pregnant”

Scarlett Johansson veered into directing in 2009 with These Vagabond Shoes, a short black and white film that starred Kevin Bacon as a man in search of a hot dog. The short was intended, by Johansson, to be part of the New York, I Love You omnibus film, but ended up being cut. (Producers said the short was cut because it was in black and white, while the rest of the film was in color, and didn't feature an "interpersonal relationship" as did the other tales.) Now Johansson is going to direct a feature based on a Truman Capote story. The film will be Summer Crossing, an adaptation of the once-lost first novella by Truman Capote. Tristine Skyler, a screenwriter and playwright, is scripting. The plot goes like so: "Set in New York during the summer of 1945, this is the story of a young carefree socialite, Grady, who must make serious...

Yep, she's becoming a director, too, just like Madonna and Angelina Jolie. Variety is reporting that Barry Spikings, Oscar winning producer of The Deer Hunter, is backing and producing the feature directorial debut of actress Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow in The Avengers next summer. She'll be taking on an adaptation of Truman Capote's 40s lost novella Summer Crossing, about an 18-year-old girl breaking free of her rich, smothering, family to discover her own identity and sexuality. Well, this sounds like an interesting step for Johansson, but she did direct the 2009 short These Vagabond Shoes just before. The news focuses on the project coming together with producers, including executive producer Peter D. Graves in conjunction with the Truman Capote Literary Trust and its trustee Alan Schwartz. Screenwriter and New York playwright Tristine Skyler (Getting to Know You, The Bell Jar) is adapting the Capote novella for Johansson. "Summer...
