- Vincent Chase, who separated from his wife after nine days of marriage, wants to do something new in his career. He calls his former agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold, who offers Vince a leading role in his first studio production. Vince says he will only star in it if he directs. Eight months later, Hyde, the directorial debut by Vince, is in the middle of post-production and is over budget by $15 million. Needing more money, Vince asks Ari if they can get an additional $10 million to complete the movie. Reluctant, but wanting to please him, Ari flies to Texas to meet the co-financiers of the movie, Larsen McCredle and his son Travis, to get them to give the money. Hesitant, Larsen sends Travis with Ari back to Los Angeles to see a cut of the film at Vince's private screening. Vince has second thoughts on the rough cut and cancels the screening out of fear no one will enjoy it. He later gives Ari and Travis a copy of the movie for their viewing. With Ari giving him no answer, Travis puts the post-production on hold. In addition, studio CEO John Ellis removes Ari from the production..
- Vincent "Vince" Chase (Adrian Grenier), who separated from his wife after nine days of marriage, wants to do something new in his career. He calls his former agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), who offers Vince a leading role in his first studio production. Vince says he will only star in it if he directs. Ari is married to Melissa (Perrey Reeves). Vinnie's entourage includes Drama, Eric and Salvatore "Turtle" Assante (Jerry Ferrara). Shauna (Debi Mazar) is Vinnie's PR.
Eight months later, Hyde, the directorial debut by Vince, is in the middle of post-production and is over budget by $15 million. Ari is under a lot of heat for handing Vince his directorial debut in Ari's first studio movie, when the studio is having their worst year financially. Ari still hasn't seen the movie, and it is making him nervous. Needing more money, Vince asks Ari if they can get an additional $10 million to complete the movie. Ari is upset since this is the third time Vince has come to Ari for more money. Vince had already spent the original $100 million budget and was $15 million over. Vince argues that he didn't take an acting fee for the movie as he wanted to direct. Vince says that the money has been well spent and he needs the money to make the movie perfect. Vince runs into Emily Ratajkowski at the studio and invites her to the private screening, which is happening the next day.
Ari cannot simply write Vince a check. Reluctant, but wanting to please him, Ari flies to Texas to meet the co-financiers of the movie; Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton) and his son Travis (Haley Joel Osment) to give them the money. Larsen says that in 4 years he has invested over a billion dollars in the studio's movies and has never seen a single one. Hesitant, Larsen sends Travis with Ari back to Los Angeles to see a cut of the film at Vince's private screening.
E is about to have a baby with Sloan McQuewick (Emmanuelle Chriqui) but is having sex action with a hottie Melanie (Sabina Gadecki) on the side. E attends all the doctor appointments with Sloan. Melanie breaks up with E since it was getting too weird for her with E spending time with Sloan. Turtle spots Ronda Rousey on the streets and chases after her in Vince's car. He manages to invite Rhonda to Vince's private screening. Lloyd is getting married and wants Ari to give him away at the ceremony. Ari agrees to holding the ceremony at his house, but wont commit to giving Lloyd away.
Vince has second thoughts on the rough cut and cancels the screening out of fear no one will enjoy it. At the party, Travis was introduced to Emily Ratajkowski. Travis is a fan of Emily and tries hard all night to score with her. Drama gets E high on drugs and has sex with another girl named Paula. Turtle hooks up with Rhonda and scores a date. Vince later gives Ari and Travis a copy of the movie for their viewing. Ari loves the movie and sends Vince a car as a present the next morning. But, when Ari meets Travis, he requests that Ari cut the scenes with Vince's brother, Johnny "Drama" Chase (Kevin Dillon), out of the movie or he will not give the film the extra money.
The same morning, Rhonda sends an Uber for Turtle. Drama messes with Turtle and convinces him that Rhonda is looking for business ideas from him. Rhonda is offended when Turtle talks shop with her and kicks him out of the house. Meanwhile Sloan is disgusted with E that he had sex with 2 women within 24 hours. Meanwhile Melanie calls E and says that she is pregnant and asks E to come for a meeting. E arrives and is confronted by Melanie and Paula together.
With Ari giving him no answer, Travis puts the post-production on hold. Dana Gordon (Constance Zimmer) informs Ari about Travis's activities on studio property. Ari confronts Travis and tells Vince that Travis wants Drama cut out of the movie. Vince and Eric "E" Murphy (Kevin Connolly) visit Travis to come up with a solution, but this results in Travis saying he did not like Vince's performance either and wants the entire movie to be redone with a new lead and director. In addition, studio CEO John Ellis (Alan Dale) removes Ari from the production and puts Dana in charge.
Meanwhile, Turtle pursues Rhonda at her gym, and she concedes that she will give Turtle a second chance if he can last 30 seconds in the ring with her. Rhonda ends up dislocating Turtle's shoulder, but he doesn't tap out and earns his date.
The boys soon realize the reason Travis is angry over the movie is because Vince is spending time with Emily Ratajkowski, whom Travis is infatuated with. After the private screening, Travis hanged around Emily's house, and saw Vince go in have sex with her that night. Learning of this, Ari interrupts Ellis in a boardroom meeting with Larsen and Travis with this information. Dana backs Ari by saying that she has seen the movie and that it is good.
Surprised, Larsen says he will stay behind the movie if Ari is no longer working for the studio because of how he disrespected Travis in front of him. During this time, the boys are in the hospital as E's ex-fiance Sloan goes into labor. Sloan gives birth to a girl, Ryan Murphy, and the boys celebrate.
Ari arrives at the hospital and also announces that he resigned, thus allowing Vince's movie to prosper. Ari used his buyout package of $30 million to buy a stake in Vince's movie. Hyde becomes a box office hit, grossing over $450 million worldwide. At the Golden Globe Awards, Drama (Kevin Dillon) ends up winning the award for Best Supporting Actor. Stunned, Drama goes to accept the award and is silent for a moment before yelling his trademark Viking Quest phrase, "VICTORY!!!"
In a mid-credits scene, Ari's former assistant Lloyd (Rex Lee) has his wedding and Ari gives him away. When the group gets together for a picture, Billy Walsh (Rhys Coiro) suggests that they should make a film (or TV show) about the lives of Vince and the gang.
