There are many horror films, thrillers, and disaster movies that try to capture the worst moments in the lives of fictional characters and touch the hearts of viewers through their suffering.
Some do it better than others, but to this day, no movie can compete with the horrors that surround us in real life.
Sometimes, though, cinematography meets the stories of real people, and that's when the real magic happens. The most realistic disaster movie, filmed in 2012, is now available for everyone to watch on Netflix. But it won't be for long.
Is The Impossible a Good Movie?
In 2004, the Indian Ocean was hit by a tsunami that wreaked havoc in several countries at once. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and many other countries were affected by the disaster, which took the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and went down in history as one of the world's deadliest disasters.

It may seem that the golden era of the disaster movies had remained in the 2010’s, with such titles as The Impossible (2012), The Wave (2015) and Deepwater Horizon (2016). However, this assumption is completely wrong, and this thriller proves not only that the disaster films are in great demand, but also that they can be made so well today.
Set in the aftermath of an unexpected earthquake, the movie starts by showing that it has reduced Seoul to rubble. In such catastrophic obstacles only one apartment building, called Hwang Gung Apartments, mysteriously remains untouched.
Its residents, considering themselves to be special as if they were chosen by somebody to stay alive, decide to reconstruct the city. Along the way, they begin to confront each other and, moreover, their common dilemmas challenging their moral principles.

“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” pits the incendiary author Truman Capote against a “gaggle” of New York socialites, but there is one “swan” that is truly at the heart of the roost, namely, Babe Paley, played by Naomi Watts. Since Babe is the closest of all the women to the writer, his betrayal of the group in 1975 in his scathing “Esquire” excerpt from his unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” hits her the hardest, and the other swans rally to her defense to ice the “In Cold Blood” scribe out of the upper echelons of society.
What makes the relationship between Babe and Truman so compelling—in addition to the performances of Watts and Tom Hollander—is how much we see of their friendship blossoming. The entire opening sequence of the season shows Capote comforting and strategizing with Babe over how to handle the latest and most disgraceful of her husband Bill’s (Treat Williams) infidelities.

After ‘Billy Elliot the Musical’, Holland made his film debut in the disaster drama ‘The Impossible’ as a teenage tourist trapped in a tsunami. He gained the spotlight with the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise in the MCU starting with ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Later, he...

Tom Holland, the Spider-Man himself, will make a glamorous return to London’s West End by starring in Jamie Lloyd’s Romeo & Juliet.
British actor Tom Holland will switch webs for poison as he’s set to return to the West End in a new production of Romeo & Juliet.
Holland teased a “big announcement” on his Instagram stories the day before and many were hoping it would be related to Spider-Man 4, which is currently in early development at Sony and is expected to go into production in late 2024.
Holland got his big break by playing the title role in Billy Elliott at the Victoria Palace Theatre. His transition to films happened with Ja Bayona’s terrific The Impossible in which he played the son of Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts.

In the early 1970s, a rugby team from Uruguay set out for a match in Chile. Some brought friends or family members, some left them behind. On their small chartered plane, everyone was giddy with excitement. But as they made their way over the Andes, the plane started to descend — far too early. They struck a mountain and broke into pieces. Miraculously, some of the 45 passengers on board survived — but they faced perilous conditions.

Netflix might be known for pumping out a bewildering volume of "content," but the streaming service isn't just breathing new life into forgotten thrillers or showcasing terrible Spanish slashers. Often, amid the deluge of media, Netflix will serve up something decent, and "Society of the Snow" is the perfect example.
Spain's official 2024 Oscars submission for Best International Feature, "Society of the Snow" is the latest movie from "The Impossible" and "The Orphanage" director J.A. Bayona. Thus far, it seems to be the filmmaker's best effort, receiving critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Non-English Language Film at this year's Golden Globes. Now, as of January 4, 2024, it's available to stream on Netflix ... though if you haven't yet watched, you might want to prime yourself for the harrowing story told within.

Netflix's latest movie is the epic drama "Society of the Snow," directed by J.A. Bayona. The Spanish-language drama is based on the Andes tragedy (also referred to as the Andes miracle) of 1972, wherein a charter plane carrying 45 people — including members of a Uruguayan rugby team — crashed in the Andes mountains, leaving the survivors stranded in an extremely harsh environment for 72 days. This is a story that has fascinated people around the world for decades, inspiring three movies, many documentaries, and serving as the inspiration for "Yellowjackets."
Most adaptations tend to focus on the more sensationalist aspect of the tale: cannibalism. The first feature film based on the tragedy was a Mexican exploitation movie, and arguably the most famous film is the American production "Alive," directed by Frank Marshall and featuring a whitewashed cast that included Ethan Hawke. While researching and preparing to make his 2012 survival film The Impossible, filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona came across the book La sociedad de la nieve by journalist Pablo Vierci. Though the story of the 1972 Andes accident was a familiar one, Bayona had never seen the account contextualised in the same way. Uruguayan native Vierci’s book, written 36 years after the tragic events, benefitted from distance, looking beyond the facts to provide a psychological approach to the circumstances and how they shaped the survivors’ lives. After completing The Impossible, Bayona bought the rights to Vierci’s book and began a decade-long journey to bring the story to the screen.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Keane's Disconnected, directed by J.A. Bayona. J.A. Bayona is a master at turning horror films into dramas, and drama films into horror. Everyday life can turn horrific on a dime, and his grimmer scenes are filled with a sense of pathos: you do care about his protagonists. Even the ghosts, like in El Orfanato, get their moment of dramatic introspection. And everyday horrors get to feel almost sensationally horrific in the hands of J.A Bayona: the tsunami in The Impossible gets under the skin in a way few disaster movies do, by using tricks out of...

If there is one thing you can say about Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona, it’s that he knows how to capture tragedy in a most beautiful, authentic way. Bayona’s latest, Society of the Snow, treads a similar path to his previous work, like The Impossible, as a disaster movie tackling real-world events, while also harnessing the kind of emotional agony of his coming-of-age drama, A Monster Calls. While Society of the Snow ultimately has a relatively happy ending, it is not without sacrifice, and this is one of those rare films that you simply have to see, but will likely never want to watch ever again once you come out the other side.

Society of the Snow Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Enzo Vogrincic, Agustin Pardella, Matias Recalt, Tomas Wolf, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, and Francisco Romero
Director: J.A. Bayona
Society of the Snow Movie Review ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: Bayona and his team match the scope of the environment with the scope of the character’s internal conflict, creating a powerful dilemma.
What’s Bad: The movie’s overreliance on narration makes some of the most potent moments feel flat when the film needs to explain all the internal turmoil in words.
Loo Break: While the movie is long, the pacing is relatively fast, and we see our character fall into more desperate situations by the minute; there are no breaks here.
Watch or Not?: This is a must-watch, especially now that we are close to the awards season.

J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is a terrifying yet hopeful tale of survival based on the book of the same name about the survivors of the 1972 Uruguayan Flight 571 plane crash in the Andes. This isn’t the first time a film has been made on this story, yet the 50-year-old tale somehow remains relevant today. What Bayona excels at is eliciting a certain harrowing, and simultaneously optimistic feeling within the viewer that perhaps no other filmmaker can do as well. Society of the Snow may be familiar in its story, but there’s something very new to the way it’s been presented, and on a second watch, it struck me how this could’ve been so tedious and disturbing to watch, but it’s simply a humanistic film. What makes Society of the Snow so compelling is its subtle dialogue and compact camera angles that make us feel for all the characters.

Premiering at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Society of the Snow is Director J.A. Bayona’s take on the story of the infamous 1972 Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Chartering a rugby team to Chile, only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. Finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
Based on the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” by Pablo Vierci, the film utilizes Vierci’s strong ties to the remaining survivors of the crash, many of whom he knew from childhood. The filmmakers recorded more than 100 hours of interviews with all of the living survivors and the actors had access to them & their families as well.
With a reported budget of around 60-70 million, Bayona spared no expense to bring the highest level of authenticity to the project.

Plot: The true story of The Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster, where a team of Rugby players crashed in the Andes, and the survivors had to endure the harsh elements, avalanches and starvation before finally being rescued thanks to their own heroic efforts.
Review: The Uruguayan Andes Crash is one of the most compelling survival stories ever told. There’s a reason it’s become a popular topic for documentarians and filmmakers, but with it dramatized so brilliantly in the film Alive, what’s the point of another version? I was wary of digging into Netflix’s lavish new movie, but the fact that it was directed by J. A. Bayona, whose film The Impossible (about the 2004 Tsunami) is pretty underrated, made me curious. I passed on seeing this at a local theatrical screening here in Montreal to watch the screener, but about 20 minutes in, I realized I had made a terrible mistake.

In 2017, Tom Holland won his first BAFTA Award as the year’s Rising Star. The British Academy may have been a little late in recognizing the young actor, as Holland first won international critical acclaim five years earlier with his spectacular on-screen debut as a tsunami survivor in J.A. Bayona’s “The Impossible.” Even then, Holland was considered a bit of an acting veteran, as four years earlier, at age 12, he hit the London stage with a leading role in the award-winning “Billy Elliot: The Musical.”
Impressed with his dance skills and gymnastics background (as well as his dramatic chops), Marvel signed Holland to a six-picture deal to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU. Most importantly, the young actor received the key blessing from Stan Lee, who said that Holland was the “exact age and height” he had in mind when he envisioned the character. The lore of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which fell out of the sky and crashed into the South American Andes in 1972, typically summons grisly images of cannibalism and gangrene. The 72 days that a Uruguayan rugby team en route to Chile endured, snow-drifted and hungry, have been dramatized elsewhere, including the 1993 survival drama “Alive,” starring a mostly white and Anglicized cast. Now, after a moment under the tentpole sun with the ill-conceived “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona returns to the style of more personal and human disasters with “Society of the Snow.” Shot in Spanish with Uruguayan accents, this muscular and often brutal depiction is chiseled with authenticity, but it’s too psychologically schematic to make much in the way of an emotional impact.
That’s not to say Bayona and his team haven’t devised some seriously impressive filmmaking: “Society of the Snow” was filmed in Spain...

Ja Bayona’s powerful retelling of the 1972 rugby team’s flight that crashed in the Andes and the agonising decisions passengers took in order to stay alive
The story of the 1972 Uruguayan air crash in the remote Andes, and the ordeal of the survivors who resorted to cannibalism, is powerfully retold in this movie from Spanish director Ja Bayona. It is based on the book of the same name by Uruguayan journalist Pablo Vierci and not (or only indirectly) taken from Piers Paul Read’s pioneering 1974 classic Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors which popularised the idea that their cannibalism had become a kind of mysterious secular Eucharist, eating the blood and body of one’s fellow human beings to stave off death, in a profound spirit of fellowship and love.
Perhaps no movie about this extraordinary case can quite encompass what in some ways is its most poignant part: the aftermath,...

In 1972, a small passenger plane crashed into a mountain in the Andes, its tail and wings ripping off in the impact. When the fuselage came to rest on the snow, it contained 33 survivors, among them the young members of a Uruguayan rugby team. Over an unimaginable 72 days, they would contend with starvation, exposure, hypothermia and two avalanches, until only 16 remained alive. Ultimately, they were forced to make an agonizing choice: consume the bodies of the dead or die themselves. J.A. Bayona’s film Society of the Snow, based on Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name, takes a fresh look at the story, giving voice to both the dead and the living. Here, the Spanish filmmaker and the Uruguayan author discuss how they collaborated to tell a vital story of human will and sacrifice that would honor the real experience of the survivors and their dear departed friends.

What do moviegoers want to see right now? For decades, studios have had very specific answers to this question, but considering that 2023’s box office was dominated by two films called Barbie and Oppenheimer, it seems like those preconceived notions might be changing. When we look at the films already scheduled for 2024, there certainly seems to be a lot of familiarity that might be old hat.
But look again at a few of the auteur pieces that have already been slated. Even the blockbuster class looks surprisingly ambitious, with new works from the likes of George Miller, Denis Villeneuve, and Bong Joon-ho. There are also familiar favorites, such as a new Deadpool flick, and curious question marks–like Robert Eggers remaking the greatest vampire movie of all time more than a hundred years later. 2024 should be an interesting year at the movies. So here are a few to watch out for.

“To go back home with my people to shoot a movie was fantastic,” says director J.A. Bayona, whose film “Society of the Snow” has been selected as Spain’s entry for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. “Every time I work in Hollywood I bring my people with me. It’s been a whole journey. I did my first movies in Spain, ‘The Orphanage,’ ‘The Impossible’ and ‘A Monster Calls.’ I established my voice. I wanted to show the world, ‘This is who I am.’ I moved to Hollywood. Then, doing this film after so many years, this is where I really like to be. I’m going back to my people. Being selected for the Oscars was extraordinary.”

An adaptation of the non-fiction book of the same name, written by Pablo Vierci, Society of the Snow is about the Uruguayan rugby team which, en route to Chile in 1972, crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. The survivors were forced to resort to extreme measures in order to stay alive. That is the same real-life event that director Frank Marshall brought to the screen with the 1993 film Alive,...

It was freezing cold. The altitude was 11,000 feet. There was the occasional avalanche. No cranes. No dollies. But by getting as close to the Andes’ Valley of Tears as possible, the site of the 1972 Uruguayan rugby team’s infamous crash, Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”), his producing partner Belén Atienza, and their cast and crew brought the dead back to life. Sixteen survivors walked away from that crash after 72 days. 42 died.
The Spanish entry for the Oscars, “The Society of the Snow”, is about the contract the living made: They offered their bodies to keep their friends alive after their deaths.
“The people in the plane, the people who went through that story, were offering their bodies to their friends, in case they need them,” said Bayona. “And in that idea, there is something transcendent because it’s this unconscious realization that you and I are the same thing.

In 2004, The Indian Ocean tsunami hit parts of Southeast Asia, claiming more than 227,898 lives and devastating countless families who were torn apart due to the environmental disaster. The story of María Belón, who was among several who experienced and survived the tsunami in Khao Lak, Thailand serves as the inspiration for Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona's disaster drama, "The Impossible." Belón herself was involved with the screenwriting process of the film to ensure the authenticity of the events, and apart from a few alterations made for dramatic effect, "The Impossible" captures the harrowing perspective of disaster survivors who often have to contend with the helpless despair of being separated from their loved ones.
Perhaps the appeal of this raw, vulnerable human sentiment is the reason why "The Impossible" has currently earned a place in the Top 10 Netflix Charts in the U.S. Released in 2012, "The Impossible" tells a story...

As expected, Netflix had a quick hit on its hands this weekend: David Fincher’s “The Killer” was an immediate #1 on the streamer. Credit the genre and star Michael Fassbender for giving it a boost that even top directors like Fincher don’t always guarantee.
After all, even Fincher’s first Netflix film, “Mank,” wasn’t a hit. His second offering for the streamer is immediately doing far better than his 2019 black-and-white biopic. Despite good reviews — and eventual Oscar nominations — “Mank” made Netflix’s top 10 for just one day and it only ranked at #10.
As for “The Killer,” its action appeal, a lead actor not known for streaming originals, and elevated festival attention all seem to have contributed to its immediate ascension to #1. It replaced “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” with Sony’s big summer hit still #2.

At long last, the strike is over! The largest actors’ union in Hollywood (the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) has agreed to a new three-year contract with top Hollywood studios, meaning that your favorite television series or movie that was in the midst of production when writers and actors walked offsets can now get back to action.
That’s certainly a relief where this column is concerned, though streaming platforms weren’t due to run out of content completely for another few months. In fact, this week’s release schedule features a great lineup of movies and shows, and could reasonably stand up against most other weeks in terms of streaming releases regardless of strikes!

When you think of Keanu Reeves, you're probably more focused on the good-natured memes, or him kicking ass in a variety of movies such as the :a[John Wick]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/john-wick-review/' } franchise. But did you suspect had a — pun entirely intended — driving interest in Formula 1 racing? As it turns out, he's fronting a new docuseries about the sport, focused on the unbelievable story of one particular underdog team. Brawn: The Impossible Formula One Story is driving towards a release on Disney+ and the trailer is online:
The four-part series will chronicle mogul Ross Brawn’s purchase of the Honda F1 team prior to the start of the 2009 season for just £1, and his subsequent turnaround of the team, which resulted in both the Drivers’ (for Jenson Button) and Constructors’ titles.
Of course, the story isn't quite as simple as that, with simmering rivalries,...
