Christmas 1991
The biggest takeaway of television during Christmas 1991 was The Chippendales appearing on The Generation Game. I was surprised Bruce Forsyth did not join in.
Presenter Grace Dent wondered if this would be allowed today. Looking at Strictly Come Dancing, I think why not.
It was also the time of The Only Fools and Horses Christmas specials and in 1991 it was a two parter called Miami Twice. The Trotters go to Florida and Del Boy encounters a doppelganger who is a big time gangster.
Meanwhile The Birds of a Feather go to Spain. It was still a time if you got a Festive special, try to go abroad for Christmas.
There was loads of saccharine as well. Spun off from The Late Late Breakfast Show when Noel Edmonds used to broadcast live on Christmas Day. Noel's Christmas Presents had him pull out all the stops to make some people wishes come true. A young girl suffering from cancer thought she was going to Paris. Instead she is whisked off to LA to meet Whoopi Goldberg.
Meanwhile Cliff Richard sang his latest festive song while thinking he should really fire his choreographer.
There was more hip music in Rapido fronted by Antoine de Caunes. It turns out Nirvana were big fans of the show.
Less sugary was a documentary on the rise of broken families in Britain. Rising divorce rates meant more single parents struggling to raise children. A sign of real Britain. Something that came to the fore when people complained on Points of View about the Victorian set Songs of Praise. A hark back to happier times when in reality it was an era of extreme poverty.
Benny Hill had a profile done on him by Omnibus. By this time he was off British television for a few years. Some say political correctness, to me he was just old hat.
Technically Hill was a great writer of comedy. However he explains a gag of a man looking at a pretty woman, gets distracted and walks into a lamppost. The joke is on the man.
I understand that Benny but you had been repeating the same gag for 30 years.
Rowan Atkinson did a better updated version of that gag on Not the Nine O Clock News in the early 1980s.
