A recent study on the Hollywood industry proved that the percentage of women representation in the top box office earners has been decreasing. The study claimed that female roles have decreased considerably in 2023 when compared to 2022 and it is quite a notable figure. Although there have been no major reasons stated, the industry will surely work on the deficit of female representation.
Along with the deficit of female representation in the industry, Hollywood has also suffered a major blow in its box office collection over the years. 2022 saw a total of over $10 billion in overall revenue but 2023 could only collect a bit over $8 billion, with their difference being almost $2 billion. Now it is a major blunder as it potentially points towards a lack of content from Hollywood.

China’s Bona Film Group, producer of such hits as The Battle At Lake Changjin, made its debut on the Shenzhen stock exchange on Thursday, with shares closing the day at Rmb 7.24 (1.07). This was a 44 increase from the initial public offering price of Rmb 5.03 (0.74) per share and put the market capitalization at just under Rmb 10B (1.47B), according to the South China Morning Post. Big-screen pioneer Imax said Thursday that it recorded a net non-cash provision of 6.9 million, or 0.12 per share, due to an increase in reserves given the uncertainty of collecting receivables in Russia. With the Russia-Ukraine war ongoing, sanctions and boycotts underway include all major studios pulling releases from Russia.
“This provision was taken in an exercise of caution due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and covers substantially all of the company’s net receivable exposure in the Russian market,” the company said as part of its first-quarter earnings report. Over the past five years, Russia has represented about 3 on average of Imax’s annual global box office.
The provision squeezed earnings. Net losses of 13.6 million narrowed from 14.8 million the year before but would have been considerably less.
Revenue surged 55 to 60 million from about 39 million primarily from The Batman, Spider-Man: No Way Home and local-language title The Battle at Lake Changjin II...

As Hollywood heads to Las Vegas for CinemaCon, studios will land in Sin City with a renewed appreciation for the money that can be made in cinemas.
After experimenting with different release strategies and launching their own streaming services, many studios better understand that there’s no substitute for the attention and treasure that comes with a big, old-fashioned theatrical launch. Bold moves like Warner Bros.’ decision to send its entire 2021 slate to HBO Max at the same time the films opened in cinemas proved to be a mixed bag, and every major studio has opted to have some kind of exclusive theatrical window for the foreseeable future.
That means that the palpable tension that hung over last year’s gathering will have lifted, even as the box office has failed to recapture its pre-pandemic stride. But there are plenty of unpleasant realities still facing an exhibition industry hoping to move on from Covid.

“The Batman” flew to an opening weekend of $11.8 million and landed in first place at the box office in China. It was the biggest opening this year in China for a Hollywood title but, with a return of coronavirus problems affecting cinema operations, the result has a tinge of missed opportunity.
Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway showed the film amassing $11.6 million between Friday and Sunday, with an additional boost from previews on Thursday.
Imax reported that the film earned $2 million of that total from its screens or 16% of the film’s China weekend total. It also reported that “The Batman” played on 440 Imax screens, a figure that may reflect temporary closures. There are some 750 Imax venues in commercial operation in a normal weekend.
In second place was “Uncharted,” which picked up $4 million over the Friday to Sunday period. “Uncharted” was given an unusual Monday release and over its seven opening days amassed $10.4 million,...

Treasure-hunting action adventure “Uncharted” picked up $1.95 million in China on Monday, its official opening day, according to local box office tracking sources.
Provisional data from Ent Group showed it launching in first place on Monday, becoming the first film to displace the long-running Chinese patriotic war movie “The Battle at Lake Changjin II,” which had reigned supreme since Feb. 1.
“Uncharted” had been given previews on Saturday and Sunday and picked up over $1 million of business. Ent Group calculated that by Monday evening, the film had accumulated $3.21 from its first full day plus two preview sessions.
Maoyan, one of China’s leading film ticketing agencies, reported similar figures and forecast that the film will go on to earn a lifetime score of RMB95 million in China, or some $15 million at current currency exchange rates.
Maoyan users gave the film a very creditable 8.6 out of 10 rating. The more cinephile users of Douban...

Mainland China’s theatrical box office slipped to its lowest weekend total of the year as the market suffered a combination of rising Covid cases and a lack of new releases.
Nationwide box office between Friday and Sunday amounted to just $19.2 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. It was the fifth weekend of decline since the splashy opening of eight major titles on Feb. 1 for the Lunar New Year holidays.
“The Battle at Lake Changjin II,” which dominated proceedings at New Year, remained at the top of the chart for the sixth consecutive weekend. It earned a lowly $4.6 million over three days for a cumulative total of $635 million.
Recent days have witnessed a surge in coronavirus cases in China that has caused the return of restrictions in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen as well as epicenters Jilin and Changchun in the Northeast.

Refresh for latest…: Sony’s Uncharted handily crossed the $200M mark globally this weekend, after adding $35M from 64 overseas markets and $23.3M domestically. The international box office cume is now $143M. Worldwide, the Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg-starrer counts $226.4M.
Sony also boasts another milestone of sorts with another Holland-starrer as Spider-Man: No Way Home reached $1.85B worldwide to surpass the original 1997/1998 global run of Titanic ($1.84B).
While Uncharted held strongly, and other existing pictures also hit new milestones, it was generally a fairly quiet weekend at the international box office with no major newcomers and as anticipation is high for The Batman to begin next session.
Uncharted was down just 35%. Notable key markets include leader the UK at $24.8M (-12%), France at $12.2M (-36%), Spain at $8.8M (-33%), Australia with $7.8M (-26%), and Germany at $6.7M (-23%).
In IMAX, Uncharted has grossed $15.7M worldwide, of which $8.7M is from overseas markets.

Wu Jing, the highest-grossing male actor of all time in China, will join British action star Jason Statham in Warner Bros.’s “Meg 2: The Trench,” sources close to the production have confirmed to Variety.
The giant shark actioner, however, will be without Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”). The Chinese actor, who played a female oceanographer, embodying both brains and beauty in Jon Turteltaub’s testosterone-fueled 2018 “The Meg,” is not returning to the franchise at this point.
With Ben Wheatley in the directing chair, production on “Meg 2: The Trench” began at the end of January at the Warner-owned Leavesden Studios outside London. It will continue there until May before switching to outdoor locations, likely to be in Asia.

Trinity Cine Asia has acquired rights to mainland Chinese blockbuster “The Battle at Lake Changjin II” for release in the U.K. and Ireland. The deal was struck with sales agency Distribution Workshop.
Trinity plans an almost immediate release from Feb, 18, 2022, barely two weeks after the film launched in Chinese theaters on Feb. 1, in time for the Lunar New Year holidays. The company plans to have copies of the film in over 25 cities.
In China the film dominated the holiday season and has accumulated $480 million (RMB3.05 billion) to date, making it the world’s top grossing film in 2022.
The new film deploys the same three directors, Tsui Hark, Chen Kaige and Dante Lam, as its October 2021 predecessor “The Battle at Lake Changjin.”
Also known as “Watergate Bridge,” the new film is a further tribute to Chinese heroism during the early part of the Korean War. It sees the 7th Infantry...

Friday Update: Continuing a downward trend versus 2021, Chinese New Year box office in 2022 is off about 23% across the first four days of the important moviegoing period. However, it is above the pre-pandemic holiday in 2019 by 3%. In total thus far, movies on offer during Lunar New Year 2022 have amassed an estimated Rmb 4.37B ($687M), according to ticketing platform Maoyan, and led by The Battle At Lake Changjin II (fka Water Gate Bridge) with Rmb 1.91B ($300.2M) through Friday.
Friday’s overall haul for all films was off about 12% compared to Thursday — perhaps partly explained by the kick-off of the Winter Olympics in Beijing whose opening ceremony was televised in the evening local time. After a sleepy January mostly dominated by Spider-Man: No Way Home taking victory laps after its explosive December opening, February looks to be considerably more eventful. The star-powered slate includes a franchise follow-up (Death on the Nile) and a potential franchise starter (Uncharted) mixed in with a musical rom-com (Marry Me) and a comedy (Dog) to round things out, not to mention a potential boost to the specialty market once the Oscar nominations come out. The month should get off to a solid start this weekend with the latest Roland Emmerich disaster epic Moonfall and the return of the Jackass gang in Jackass Forever.
It may be a close match, but the weekend will likely go to Jackass Forever. Paramount is releasing the film on 3,600 screens and is expecting a gross in the mid-teens for the series’ fourth film (fifth when you count the associated Bad Grandpa). That would make...

“The Battle at Lake Changjin II” lived up to its blockbuster billing with a more than $75 million box office haul by lunchtime on Tuesday, its opening day in mainland Chinese theaters.
The film, aka “Watergate Bridge” had grossed RMB487 million ($76.5 million) by 1.30 pm, according to online ticketing agency Maoyan and Alibaba’s Beacon data service. At this pace a $100 million opening day is possible.
State media has forecast that the film may propel the Chinese New Year week to over $1 billion and that the 149-minute film could eventually become the highest-grossing film of all time in China.
To do that, it would have to surpass “The Battle at Lake Changjin” which was released on Oct. 1, 2021 and, over a prolonged run in cinemas, earned $913 million to become the second biggest film worldwide in 2021, behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

After being forced to sit out the annually lucrative Chinese New Year period as the Covid crisis was just beginning in 2020, Chinese box office blasted to an all-time high during the comparable 2021 session. This week, the Year of the Tiger will be ushered in with eight movies beginning February 1, and with potential new records on the horizon. Last year in the world’s biggest box office market, the week-long holiday reached Rmb 7.8B ($1.2B at historical rates).
The first full weekend of this Lunar New Year’s festivities dovetails with the beginning of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. It’s likely that Friday’s opening ceremony will be widely watched at home, but tickets to the Games are not being sold to the general public in an attempt to avoid further Covid flare-ups. Box office could still see some impact.

Disney/20th Century Studios’ Death On The Nile has been confirmed for a China release, slated to go out on February 19. The date falls just after the Chinese New Year period ends, and is the day before the culmination of the Winter Olympics in Beijing.
The Kenneth Branagh-directed mystery ensemble nabbed an increasingly rare China slot for Hollywood titles and is the sole studio movie currently dated in 2022. What’s more, it’s also releasing nearly in step with the beginning of its international and domestic rollout — something we haven’t seen in some time. “The Battle at Lake Changjin 2: Water Gate Bridge,” the sequel to China’s highest grossing film of all time, will debut on Feb. 1, the first day of the lucrative Chinese New Year holiday.
The weeklong vacation is typically China’s biggest box office period of the year and thus is subject to intense competition. This year, “Lake Changjin 2” is set to go up against 10 other hotly anticipated titles. The sequel currently ranks third in popularity based on votes from the “want to watch” metric from the Maoyan database.
Its top competitor is “Nice View,” the next feature from “Dying to Survive” director Wen Muye, which currently has the highest number of people indicating they “want to watch” the film on the Maoyan platform, with 447,000 votes.
Trailing “Nice View” in popularity is director Han Han’s “Only Fools Rush In,” with 389,000 votes. The comedy “Too Cool To Kill” from director...
