Named Michael Anthony Hall at birth, the actor had to switch his first and second names when he joined the...

Peter Werner, the Oscar-winning director known for his television work that spanned five decades and included helming episodes of such popular series as Moonlighting, A Different World, Justified and Law & Order: Svu, has died. He was 76.
Werner died Tuesday morning in Wilmington, North Carolina, his younger brother, Tom Werner (producer on The Cosby Show, Roseanne, That ’70s Show, The Conners), told The Hollywood Reporter. “He had a torn aorta that the doctors weren’t able to repair. So sudden,” he wrote in an email.
As a student project while attending the American Film Institute, Peter Werner directed the 1976 short film In the Region of Ice, which was based on Joyce Carol Oates’ short story and starred Fionnula Flanagan. The project won the Oscar for live-action short film.
His career kicked off from there, with Werner helming a 1977 episode of Family. The ABC drama counted Mike Nichols and Aaron Spelling as executive producers.

Elisabeth Finch — the former Grey’s Anatomy consulting producer whose myriad lies about her medical and personal history led to her resignation in March– gave her first career rehabilitation interview by saying “what she did was wrong” and how it was “not okay.”
Finch admitted to The Ankler that she never had “any form of cancer,” nor did her older brother Eric commit suicide — another lie she perpetuated while writing for the ABC drama. Her brother is actually alive and working in Florida as a doctor.
“I know it’s absolutely wrong what I did,” she said. “I lied and there’s no excuse for it. But there’s context for it. The best way I can explain it is when you experience a level of trauma a lot of people adopt a maladaptive coping mechanism. Some people drink to hide or forget things. Drug addicts try to alter their reality.

For the first time in its more than three-decade run, “The Simpsons” will premiere an episode featuring American Sign Language (Als) and a deaf actor.
“It’s very hard to do a ‘first’ after 722 episodes, but I couldn’t be more excited about this one,” executive producer Al Jean told CNN.
While the episode will premiere April 10 and comes exactly two weeks after “Coda’s” historic Best Picture win at the Oscars, the idea came up long before the movie was released and is loosely based on writer-producer Loni Steele Sosthand’s life. Titled “The Sound of Bleeding Gums,” it follows Lisa Simpson as she helps the son of her favorite musician, the late saxophonist Bleeding Gums Murphy (who died in Season 6), who is deaf and needs a cochlear implant.

Exclusive: Fox’s Monarch is getting a new boss after former Designated Survivor showrunner Jon Feldman took over the reins of the musical drama series.

Marc Guggenheim has been hired to pen the script for a Jackpot movie, reports Deadline. The project will adapt the story of the titular female hero, born Sara Ehret. The character gained powers after she was accidentally exposed—while pregnant—to Lot 777, an experimental genetic cure for Parkinson’s Disease, which left her comatose for 4 months, after which she emerged with enhanced strength, stamina and durability after having her child. Exclusive: Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to Familyship, a one-hour dramedy written by Jon Harmon Feldman. It hails from Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz’s Random Hill Productions and was sold before Gwartz’s recent appointment as Evp Development, Comedy and Drama at 20th Century Fox TV.
This marks the second high-profile sale for Random Hill this season. In a competitive situation, ABC in September gave a put pilot commitment to Backlash, a drama examining the aftermath of a child rescue from Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss, Random Hill Production and ABC Studios, part of Disney TV Studios.
Familyship — step-parents, ex-spouses, half-siblings and co-parenting — the new modern family is a melting pot of first marriages, second families and mixed ethnicities. Familyship is a soapy, character-based dramedy about a sprawling, multi-ethnic clan, that like many 21st Century families,...

Paramount Network eyes a Breaking Bad dynamic for border crime series Coyote, which will star Michael Chiklis.
Michael Chiklis, a name widely associated with acclaimed crime shows, is set to star in Coyote, an intriguing TV project brandishing a premise pertinent to today’s news headlines, for the burgeoning cable channel, Paramount Network.
Coyote will see Chiklis – in a way akin to his legendary run as tortured bent cop, Vic Mackey on The Shield – headline in a dark character study, as Variety reports. Here, he will play United States Border Agent Ben Clemens, who on the day of his mandatory retirement, discovers a tunnel used for black market smuggling into the United States from Mexico. After choosing to take advantage of this Narnia-like portal for illicit activity, Clemens finds himself targeted by an old enemy made on the job, a criminal mastermind he’s spent his career chasing.

President Tom Kirkman got a big vote of confidence from Netflix, which rescued Designated Survivor Season 3.
Designated Survivor Season 3 heading to a pickup by Netflix!
Fans will be delighted to hear that Designated Survivor will live up to its title, thanks to a bit of real life Deus ex Machina, courtesy of a certain series-rescuing streaming giant. While ABC cancelled the Kiefer Sutherland vehicle after two seasons, the studio behind the series, eOne, immediately went into talks with Netflix – who already carried international streaming rights for the series – about picking up Designated Survivor Season 3; talks that ultimately proved successful.
Kiefer Sutherland and the cast will return to the series under the purview of a new showrunner in Neal Baer, an executive-producing veteran of shows such as Under the Dome, A Gifted Man, Law & Order: Svu and ER.

Chicago – Anyone who has ever held a big secret knows that the weight of it is usually worse than the secret itself. The only thing worse than that is when the secret you’re holding back is your true self. “Love, Simon” explores the all-too-familiar, high school coming of age story, but with the added complication of coming to terms with your sexuality and identity.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The importance of this film is undeniable, especially when it comes to mainstream representation. Director Greg Berlanti understands this and shows all due respect to the tough topic. With all of Berlanti’s work on teen-based television shows (“Dawson’s Creek”, “No Ordinary Family”, “The Tomorrow People”, etc), he clearly understands how to highlight the emotional complexity, while keeping the character relatable and grounded. “Love, Simon” isn’t lacking in flair either, with a colorful dance sequence and more red herrings than a fishing trip.

It was sort of like the Famous Five, but in the Marvel Universe. Random Roles: Julie Benz on her numerous TV deaths, from Dexter to Buffy The Vampire Slayer to Angel
Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The actor: Julie Benz got her start as an actress when she was still in her teens, shifting back and forth between movies and TV and racking up a wide variety of credits in a relatively short amount of time. But it was her work with Joss Whedon—first on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, then on Angel—that put her on the map. Since then, Benz has remained a stalwart in genre projects, appearing in sci-fi series (Defiance) and superhero shows (No Ordinary Family). She’s also earned considerable acclaim for her stint on Dexter and has also turned up in more than a few horror films, the most recent of which, Havenhurst, is out now.

"I feel like I'm not living up to my potential," Kara admits to her sister Alex. "I have the same powers he does! I can lift a bus, stop a bullet. Alex, I can fly!" The "he" is Superman, Kara's celebrated cousin. Like Kara — (slightly) better known as "Supergirl," and now the star of her own TV series (it debuts Monday at 8:30 on CBS) — points out, they come from the same planet, and have the same powers, but he's an icon and she never seems to find her place. That line about squandered potential could just as easily be applied to many of the writers responsible for crafting Kara's adventures over the years, going back to her comic book debut in 1959. Despite being Superman's equal, strength-wise, the "girl" in her name was treated as doubly diminutive. Superman was there to save the world, Supergirl was there to have boy trouble,...

When CBS unveiled the first extended trailer for "Supergirl" — its entree into the ubiquitous new world of TV superhero action, as well as the network's biggest priority for this TV season — in May, many fan's immediate reaction was to note the unfortunate similarities to the recent "Saturday Night Live" parody trailer for a "Black Widow" movie that suggested any female superhero story would be presented as a romantic comedy. But while the "Supergirl" trailer definitely played up the most "Devil Wears Prada"-ish aspects — where the title character (Melissa Benoist) in her civilian identity is the mousy assistant to a snarling media mogul played by Calista Flockhart, and has bad luck in the dating department — that's only one component of the full pilot, which has a lot of action, and a lot of discussion about how Supergirl should be taken every bit as seriously as her more celebrated male cousin.

Gotham is adding yet another tough-as-nails member to the Gcpd, and this time they’ve called in the big guns. According to TVLine, the Batman prequel show has recruited The Shield alum Michael Chiklis, who will take on the role of the new captain of the Gotham City Police Department as a series regular.
Chiklis will not be taking on the role of a DC Comics character, but will instead play Nathaniel Barnes, who has been created solely for the series. Judging by the character description, it won’t take long for the infamous city to corrupt him, either:
Barnes lands on the Gcpd like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham’s police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies – on either side of the law. For Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism.

In what amounts to a news story we all saw coming, CBS has officially given Supergirl a series order. The show – developed and written by Arrow and The Flash showrunners Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, along with Chuck and No Ordinary Family alum Ali Adler – went into development last fall and was given a series commitment shortly thereafter.
The show stars Glee alum Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, who escaped Krypton’s destruction and has been in hiding on Earth and keeping her powers a secret ever since. The series will pick up when Kara is 24 years old and ready to “embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.” Her famous cousin, Superman, is expected to show up in a small capacity, but the Supergirl will mainly focus on Kara’s solo adventures and coming-of-age journey into heroism.

Initially unwilling to acknowledge her powers, she starts to come into her own in her mid-twenties and accept her heroic destiny.
