James Gunn is always up for sharing his opinions (for better or for worse) as well as interacting with fans on Twitter. Just the other day, in fact, he shared a list of 27 sequels better than the original and before that, he recommended 10 movies to watch during quarantine. But now, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director has revealed a new list of films to watch during self-isolation and has come up with 54 action movies that he believes are an A+.
Studios have been releasing some of their new efforts on digital early like Bloodshot and The Hunt in an attempt to capitalize on any extra revenue they can in these difficult times. But forget about new movies for a second. Gunn’s list below begins a proper action film education and all of his suggestions are well worth checking out.

Wes Anderson’s underrated 2004 film “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” follows Steve Zissou (Bill Murray), an eccentric oceanographer, and his large crew on a revenge mission to kill a rare “jaguar shark” that murdered his partner. In the film, Brazilian singer Seu Jorge plays Pelé dos Santos, a member of Zissou’s crew, who memorably sings Portuguese acoustic covers of David Bowie songs. Jorge later released a collection of these covers on an album entitled “The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge.” Bowie himself remarked about Jorge’s covers, “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”

Brazilian director and producer José Padilha keeps himself busy nowadays with many film and TV projects after his big Hollywood break with a modern remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film “RoboCop.” Released in 2014, the film was a commercial success but garnered mostly mixed to negative reviews. N0w in an interview with ScreenDaily, Padilha admits that making “RoboCop” was a “stressful experience.” “I didn’t have the creative freedom I needed,” says Padilha. “I spent 90% of the time fighting. It made me realize that making a studio movie is not the same as making a film.” Padilha also says that he would “think a million times before getting involved in another production of that size again,” and that he’d “rather face the reality than make movies about superheroes.”

By 2010, Hollywood’s obsession with 3D movies was in full swing. James Cameron’s Avatar may have given audiences a taste of what the cutting edge of stereoscope could look like, but it has to be said that the movies ushered into cinemas in its wake were a decidedly mixed bunch. Toy Story 3's 3D was extraordinarily effective, yet Clash Of The Titans looked like a blurry mess. How To Train Your Dragon came to life in its flying sequences, but the less said about the horribly murky Last Airbender, the better.
Unless we’re mistaken, none of the movies on this list were shot or released in 3D, and few of them did particularly stellar business. A few got a certain amount of critical acclaim,...

Neither the complete disaster some might have been anticipating nor any kind of cinematic landmark, the 2014 remake of RoboCop is a solid piece of mainstream entertainment that honors the legacy of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original, and is certainly better than the last attack on a Verhoeven film, 2012's Total Recall. The first feature film in English for director Jose Padilha, whose Elite Squad and sequel Elite Squad: The Enemy Within have been monster hits in his native Brazil and beyond, RoboCop inventively breaks down, reconfigures and soups up the core half-man, half-machine cop-hero conceit. It's as

Every movie should be approached with an open mind. Ideally, be it a film from Martin Scorsese or Friedberg and Seltzer, a reviewer should be going in without expectations, ready to play it as it lays. But it'd be dishonest to pretend that that was the case going in to "RoboCop," because it's a long-delayed remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1980s cult action sci-fi classic that, based at least on early buzz and previews, does without much of what made the original special — the satirical bite, the extreme violence, the hand-crafted effects et al. As such, even the most even-handed person could be forgiven for going in with a heavy heart, especially with the smell of the abysmal "Total Recall" redo still lingering like a fish head behind a radiator. So it's as surprising for me as it is for you to report that the 2014 edition of "RoboCop," helmed by...

"RoboCop" is returning to the streets of Detroit, with a brand new suit of armor, but with the same directive: "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." And bringing this new version of "RoboCop" to the big screen is award-wnning Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha, making his Hollywood debut. It can be a challenge for many directors to make the leap into a blockbuster sized production, but to help get his vision of "RoboCop" across, Padilha called in the skills of a regular collaborator. Composer Pedro Bromfman is the man behind Padilha's critically acclaimed sensation "Elite Squad" and the smash hit followup, "Elite Squad: The Enemy Within," and he's reteamed with the filmmaker for "RoboCop." Below, we have two exclusive tracks from his work on the upcoming film, the propulsive "Mattox And Reporters" followed by the dynamic, "First Day." Isn.t it great whenever a director gets attached to a project, and the two seem tailor-made for one another? Martin Scorsese and The Departed, for instance, or Jose Padilha and the awkwardly titled book that sounds pretty similar to The Departed, The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia. Warner Bros. is currently in talks to make one of those serendipitous match-ups by signing José Padilha to direct The Brotherhoods, Variety reports. Padilha.s next effort, MGM.s highly anticipated Robocop remake, is still in its effects-driven post-production stage on the way to a February 7, 2014 release date. And while the quality of that project is still in question, Padilha.s excellence behind the camera is clear based on 2007.s Elite Squad, which is one of the grittiest action flicks out there, and its 2010 sequel Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, a more mature film than...

Jose Padilha's first Hollywood feature appears to be off to a rocky start. The director of the two internationally loved films Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is in charge of the RoboCop remake over at Sony and as issues were recently brought up by the online geek set when Joshua Zetumer and Nick Schenk's script was leaked it sounded like just the normal complaining, but now it sounds as if Padilha may be second-guessing himself and the film hasn't even started shooting yet. We'll begin with the comments on the script that were made on Twitter via Drew McWeeny from HitFix.com. To give you a sense of where McWeeny approached the screenplay from, he says, "Robocop was already perfect." So he's against a remake from the start, not exactly a good place to be when commenting on the script, but at least he puts it out there for context.

Earlier this year we learned that MGM had opted for a somewhat unknown actor to play the lead role in their upcoming Robocop reboot. Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) landed the gig back in February, taking on the unenviable task of stepping into Peter Weller's metallic boots. Fortunately, he has stated in interviews that they will set his character apart by going for a more "human" cyborg this time around, using a see-through visor to show his eyes and facial expressions. Now this month they seem to be filling out the rest of the cast by surrounding him with some more familiar faces. Gary Oldman and Samuel L. That's right, Dr. Gregory House himself, Hugh Laurie is reportedly in talks to play the film's villain. According to THR, Laurie...

When Deadline declared last week that MGM had offered the title role in the long-in-development Robocop remake to Joel Kinnaman, it seemed like the popular showbiz site known for getting the inside dirt on the wheelings and dealings taking place behind closed doors in Hollywood might have finally slipped up. After all, MGM was said to be interested in placing a "hot" up-and-comer like Chris Pine (Star Trek) in the lead role and Brazilian director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad: The Enemy Within) apparently had his eye on rising star Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) — who said that it "could be kind of fun" to play RoboCop — for the part, whereas Kinnaman is barely on the radar of most moviegoers. Good thing we didn't bet against Deadline on this one, because MGM has apparenly "closed its deal" with Kinnaman, giving the 32 year-old Swedish-American actor his chance at superstardom as the headliner of the rebooted franchise.

Though MGM was apparently hot for Chris Pine (Star Trek) to play the title character in the long-in-development Robocop remake, and Brazilian director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad: The Enemy Within) envisioned Michael Fassbender playing future Detroit's top (cyborg) cop, the role could be going to a relative unknown. According to Deadline, MGM has offered the role to Joel Kinnaman, the 32 year-old Swedish-American actor who is currently starring in Safe House and who will be reprising the role of Stephen Holder on the crime drama The Killing when season two debuts on AMC in April.

MGM’s remake of RoboCop has been in development for a few years, but now that the studio has emerged from its recent financial troubles, it looks like the project is on the fast track. Jose Padilha, who directed Elite Squad and the excellent Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, is directing, and according to Deadline, the [...]

Title: Elite Squad: The Enemy Within Director: José Padilha Cast: Wagner Moura, Irandhir Santos, André Ramiro and Seu Jorge Running Time: 115 minutes, Rated R, Also available on Blu-ray, Digital and Video On-Demand It’s been a really long time since America has made a great crime drama. It really seems like most great crime genre films I see are foreign. There are movies like Miss Bala (Mexico), Bullhead (Belgium) and Snowtown (Australia) that take more of a deeper look of their characters while at the same time delivering mind-blowing action and excitement. But taking this approach isn’t the only way to do the crime genre correctly. There are movies like...

Happy Valentine's Day! Sadly, there aren't too many romantic movies hitting DVD or Blu-ray today, but I suppose anything with Johnny Depp always makes for a perfect date flick... even if he happens to be playing an alcoholic. The Rum Diary is really the only major release of the week, with most of the other selections being indie and foreign films including Take Shelter starring Michael Shannon, Jose Padilha's Elite Squad: The Enemy Within and The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence. Criterion is also putting out Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture and Hideo Gosha's Three Outlaw Samurai, and then there are a couple of acclaimed documentaries in The Interrupters and Urbanized. We'd also be remiss if we did not mention 50 Cent's cancer drama All Things Fall Apart... did someone say Oscar snub? What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the list of new releases after the jump.

Three Outlaw Samurai (Criterion Collection) I just watched this last night and enjoyed it quite a bit, but for anyone that reads this site often you will frequently see me complimenting samurai features. This one is a bit of a Criterion rarity in that it is feature free outside of the trailer and one essay, but the pricing does reflect that fact as Amazon has the Blu-ray listed at $19.99.
Prior to seeing this film I had never seen anything from director Hideo Gosha, but the storytelling here makes me want to see more. Three Outlaw Samurai follows the story of a wandering ronin who happens upon a situation where a trio of peasants have kidnapped the daughter of a tyrannical magistrate in an attempt to have their demands heard and to stop the oppression that has befallen eight local villages. The situation escalates when the magistrate fights back and two other samurai,...

A few days ago I received a package from New Video, a film distributor that handles a ton of different labels in the Us. This particular package had one film on Blu-ray that I had requested for review, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, and one with which I was completely unfamiliar, Urbanized. I had seen Elite Squad at Fantastic Fest last fall and was excited to revisit it on home video. Urbanized, I noticed, was by the gentleman who directed Helvetica, and the similarly design-themed Objectified, so I was marginally interested. I decided to give both of them a go, and it was only about halfway through Urbanized that I began to see the connections. The subject of Urbanized is urban planning and design. The idea...

"Elite Squad: The Enemy Within", the 2010 sequel to the 2007 Brazilian action feature "The Elite Squad", produced and directed by José Padilha, will be available from Vvs Films, on Blu-ray and DVD, February 14, 2012.
The sequel is a continuation of the semi-fictional account of the 'Bope' (Portuguese: 'Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais'), aka the 'Special Police Operations Battalion' of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, with a focus on the relationship between law enforcement and politics :
"...set thirteen years after the events of the first film, 'The Enemy Within' focuses on former captain and now 'Lt. Col. Roberto Nascimento', who, after a disastrous 'Bope' operation during a prison riot, gets caught in a bloody political dispute that involves not only the 'Public Safety Department', the State governor and State Military Police, but also paramilitary groups known as 'milícias'.

Written by Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Jonathan Bines (writer, Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and starring Mandvi, Today’S Special tells the story of Samir, a sous chef who dreams of becoming the head chef at an upscale Manhattan restaurant. When he is passed over for a promotion he impulsively quits and lets his co-worker, Carrie (Jess Weixler, Teeth), know that he intends to go to Paris and apprentice under a master French chef. Dreams must be put aside, though, after his father Hakim (Harish Patel, Run, Fat Boy, Run) has a heart attack and Samir is forced to take over Tandoori Palace, the nearly bankrupt family restaurant in Jackson Heights, Queens.
Samir’s mother, Farrida (Madhur Jaffrey), is consumed with trying to find a wife for her son, while Samir is trying to master Indian cooking to salvage the family business. Luckily, he crosses paths with Akbar (Naseeruddin Shah,...

A lot can be said about the reboot of Robocop. Things like? “Why the hell are they remaking this in the first place?” or “Didn’t they say all they wanted with the previous films?” Still in an industry that is all about milking the cash cow there is one in the works whether you like it or not. A little history about this remake project. Originally Darren Aronofsky was behind the project but left to be replaced by Jose Padilha, who directed Elite Squad: The Enemy Within.
We have no idea how this remake will work out in terms of story but certainly a name actor in the role is the number one priority from everyone involved. Russell Crowe is the latest of names being thrown into the namedropping overload (via FirstShowing). Crowe who is already linked to Akiva Goldsman’s adaptation of Winter’s Tale as well as Aronofsky’s biblical epic,...

It's been a busy week for Russell Crowe. Yesterday alone the actor was said to be part of the saving grace that would allow Akiva Goldsman to direct his gestating adaptation of Winter's Tale, and then later in the evening it was said Darren Aronofsky was looking to Crowe to take the titular role in the Biblical epic Noah. Now it sounds like Crowe is simultaneously up for another big role as a Twitter update from Variety report Jeff Sneider revealed that the actor is also potentially being lined up for RoboCop, the remake from director José Padilha of Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. I'm not sure what role sounds better for Crowe. Previously, the director wanted someone like Michael Fassbender to take the role, but Crowe doesn't really seem to be along those lines. He's much beefier, and not nearly as lean as Fassbender. Honestly, out of the trio...

The Academy has announced what I would determine to be a rather solid shortlist of Foreign Language contenders for the 2012 Oscars based on what I've heard and what I've seen so far. Of course, there are films that didn't make the cut that will likely have people up in arms. One such film is one we profiled here recently, Nadine Labaki's Where Do We Go Now?, which won the Cadillac People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Mexico's highly touted Miss Bala, Zhang Yimou's The War of Flowers, Aki Kaurismaki's Le Havre and Jose Padhila's Elite Squad: The Enemy Within were also among films many thought may stand a chance or were at least critical favorites. However, strong favorite A Separation made the list as did Win Wenders' 3D dance documentary Pina along with a personal favorite of mine in Bullhead, which is essentially this year's Dogtooth if you ask me,...

★★★★☆ José Padilha's Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010) explores the deep-seated corruption riddling Rio de Janeiro through a powerful Brazilian action drama. Building on the success of 2007's Elite Squad, Padilha's sequel offers another deeply compelling insight into the state of Rio's law enforcement and political system, showing the true depths of the city's social problems as an institutionalised pandemic.

Dylan Marchetti, founder of Variance Films, donated his afternoon Wednesday to mentoring filmmakers at Ifp’s Marketing & Distribution Labs. Variance, a distribution company that has overseen the releases of niche indies and foreign imports like Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, Littlerock, and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, has built a reputation very much in line with the trailblazing, Diy-attitude that many of Ifp’s lab filmmakers hold dear. And it was a great match, as Marchetti spent the afternoon listening to these filmmakers discuss their marketing and distribution strategies, offering tailored advice about the distribution paths that he felt might best suit each project.
Perhaps most universal were Marchetti’s insights into marketing. As each filmmaker screened a trailer or showed some of the key art options they were working with, Marchetti interjected with suggestions. Here are some highlights from the session, tips about gathering marketing materials that...

Title: Elite Squad: The Enemy Within Director: Jose Padilha Starring: Wagner Moura, Irandhir Santos, Andre Ramiro, Pedro Van Held, Maria Ribiero, Sandro Rocha, Milhem Cortaz, Andre Mattos, Seu Jorge A sprawling tale of power, sleaze and ambition in the vein of “City of God,” ”The Departed,” “Infernal Affairs” and “The Wire,” writer-director Jose Padilha’s “Elite Squad: The Enemy Within” is a howling, labyrinthine lament against the brawn and fraudulent self-protection of entrenched institutions that could and perhaps should well find a welcome audience amongst #OccupyWallStreet cineastes. Martin Scorsese's pro-celluloid meets child fantasy tale "Hugo" was awarded Best Picture and Best Director by the National Board of Review yesterday.
The Nbr is normally the first major group out of the gate at awards season until the New York Film Critics Circle stole their thunder this year, but with no clear front runners at the moment, their list has proven quite different.
"The Descendants" got a lot of love with George Clooney taking Best Actor, Shailene Woodley scoring Best Supporting Actress, and the film taking Best Adapted Screenplay. Will Reiser's "50/50" took the Best Original Screenplay honor, while J.C. Chandor was named 'Best Debut Director' for his financial thriller "Margin Call".
Tilda Swinton was awarded Best Actress for "We Need to Talk About Kevin", Christopher Plummer got Best Supporting Actor for "Beginners", and "The Help" won for Best Ensemble Cast.

We recently discussed Martin Scorsese’s Hugo to raving reviews on episode 296 of the Sound On Sight podcast. It looks like we are not alone in sharing our love for the film. Today the National Board of Review named Hugo the best film of 2011 and Martin Scorsese best director. Check out the Nbr’s full evaluation of 2011 below.
Board president Annie Schulhof said in a statement, “Hugo is such a personal film by Martin Scorsese. It is a tribute to the early years of cinema that uses today’s cutting-edge technology to bring the audience into a completely unique and magical world. It is visually stunning and emotionally engaging”.
The National Board of Review has some pedigree in picking films that have gone on to win best picture at the Oscars. Last year however, it selected The Social Network as the year’s best film, while the academy chose The King’s Speech.

Now that it is officially December, more awards are being handed out to various movies who deserve recognition. This time it’s the National Board of Review recognizing the best movies of 2011 with the top prize going to Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Scorsese also earned the award for Best Director for his work on Hugo. As for other movies, Drive, Rango, The Descendants, 50/50, Like Crazy, The Help also got some nods. Rooney Mara was also recognized for her performance in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Unfortunately we are seeing an award for J. Edgar, which seems kind of a waste.

And just like that, Martin Scorsese's Hugo became an Oscar contender. While I like the movie a good bit [1], primarily for very specific elements, I didn't really expect to see Hugo turning into something that would be an awards-season player.
