“Every family has its secrets…
One hot August morning in 1892, Lizzie Borden picked up an ax and murdered her father and stepmother. Newspapers claim she did it for the oldest of reasons: family conflicts, jealousy, and greed. The apocalypse has been a ripe source for comedy in recent years, with three features in 2013 exploring the topic, in the form of Rapture-palooza, This Is The End, and The World’s End. A somewhat less explored genre for comedic tellings are road trip movies, and a mix of the two yields a very limited number of offerings, let alone comedic offerings. Comedy duo Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine are looking to add to that number with their latest offering. The group, who was behind the recent tongue-in-cheek campaign to replace a slur against black people in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with the word “robot”, is no stranger to filmmaking, with the webseries Mary Olson and their debut feature The Selling already under their belt. In addition, they have managed to assemble an impressive cast, including Barry Bostwick from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the tv series Spin City,...

Emily Lou's ghostly horror comedy The Selling is now available on iTunes via GoDigital so if you're in the market for some lighthearted and spooky laughs this weekend (that are intentional, unlike another flick based on a video game franchise opening this week), this is your hot ticket!
The film stars Gabriel Diani, Jonathan Klein, Janet Varney, Etta Devine, Nancy Lenehan, and Barry Bostwick.
Synopsis
Richard Scarry is a real estate agent who tries to talk people out of buying houses they can’t afford. When his business partner, Dave Ross, comes up with a scheme to flip an old house for profit, he only agrees because he needs to find a way to pay for his sick mother’s medical bills. As Richard and Dave start fixing up the house for buyers, it becomes obvious why their real estate nemesis, Mary Best, was so eager to pass the house along to them.

Two days is not nearly enough time to cover the Woods Hole Film Festival, which started as a “one day, one hour” event over two decades ago, and now for eight days takes over this tiny idyllic town on the Cape, otherwise known for its world famous Oceanographic Institution, and where the moneyed can catch a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. Luckily, I used my 48 hours wisely, hopping from venue to quaint venue – including the Lillie Auditorium at the Marine Biological Laboratory, the 120-seat Woods Hole Community Hall, and the 70-seat Old Woods Hole Fire Station – and taking in more solid films (especially docs) than clunkers. Not to mention rediscovering one genuine surprise that served to remind me of the timeless power of the moving image.

Is Fdr: American Badass an insipid vacuum of filth, or is it high art of the most outlandish kind? Audiences will be divided, based on their tolerance for raunch, indignity and alternate history.
Like the film, Poolboy: Drowning out the Fury, Fdr is the creation of writer Ross Patterson and director Garrett Brawith, who both revel in working outside mainstream Hollywood, with its rigid concepts of what you "can" and "can't" do in a film. Fdr is part of a movement of independent features that break those "rules."
“They'll tell you over and over what you can and can't do,” says Brawith, “so I've stopped listening.”
“It's just a load of industry bullshit,” insists Patterson. "In Ted, they had a hooker shit on the floor, but Seth MacFarlane is massively successful so he can get away with it. If my name was as huge as his, I would be allowed...

The Selling marks Lou’s feature length directorial debut and second foray into producing. Gabriel Diani, who’s spent more time in front of the cameras rather than behind crafts the screenplay, which happens to be his first venture into full length screenwriting. He also stars in the film alongside Janet Varney (Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer), Jonathan Klein (Coyote Ugly), Etta Devine (Freakshow), Nancy Lenehan (Catch Me If You Can) and Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show).

Paraskevidekatriaphobics, beware: with three Friday the 13ths in 2012, each thirteen weeks apart, those with a deep, blinding fear of the day might be averse to watching the Special Screening hosted by Tallgrass Film Association on July 13. All others are encouraged to attend a Special Screening of the 2011 Tallgrass Film Festival Audience Award-winning film, “The Selling” at 7:30 p.m at the (purportedly haunted itself) Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum (204 S. Main). The film will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, Emily Lou, and a walking ghost tour of downtown Wichita led by Ann Keefer, Vice President of Marketing for the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation.
“The Selling” follows Richard Scarry (like the children’s book author), a too-honest-for-his-own-good real estate agent who buys a property to flip for a profit…only to discover the house is haunted. “It’s a comedic story about ghosts, demonic possession, and real estate...

A big problem with films that present themselves as horror-comedies is that, all too often, they are neither frightening nor funny. In direct opposition to this trend, Emily Lou’s new film “The Selling” succeeds on both of these fronts—it is strong low-budget comedy and strong low-budget horror. There are consistent, legitimate laughs throughout, and, especially as the movie builds and progresses towards the climax, some solid ghost story action in the midst of all the humor. Richard Scarry (Gabriel Diani, who also wrote the script)—like the children’s author—is your ideal real estate agent. He’s honest to a fault, to the point where he discourages potential buyers from purchasing a home because the mortgage is far beyond their means. Basically he is the kind of broker you want working for you because he will always tell you the truth, he’s just not much of...

The Arizona Underground Film Festival keeps picking and screening the best in world extreme cinema and their fourth annual edition, which will run Sep. 16-24 in Tucson is no exception, compiling outrageous cult epics from countries such as Japan, Switzerland and Cuba; as well as some local nastiness produced in the fest’s own backyard.
The fest opens with Jack Perez’s Some Guy Who Kills People, a comedy thriller executive produced by John Landis and starring Kevin Corrigan as a loser who gets sadistic revenge on those he feels have wronged him.
While the opening night film is a big name affair, Auff is also celebrating local freaky film fare with films such as the film noir Sweet Love and Deadly, directed by Paul Clinco; and the horror comedy Dick Night, directed by Andy Viner.

Emily Lou’s debut feature The Selling is full of spooks and suspense—but, more than anything else, comedy. Written by and starring comedian Gabriel Diani, the film centers on Richard Scarry, a down-on-his-luck, overly nice real-estate agent. When he gets talked into taking on a house that is obviously haunted by the ghosts of a serial killer and his victims, he and his business partner have to come up with a strategy to sell it. Though no potential buyers seem interested, they attract the attention of a young waitress obsessed with ghost-hunting. Meanwhile, Richard has to help pay for his mother’s expensive surgery. Can they get the spirits out of the house in time to sell it?

The San Francisco International Film Festival (Sfiff), the longest one running in the Americas, opens tonight with Mike Mills's Beginners and closes on May 5 with Mathieu Amalric's On Tour. Among the 150 films screening in between, give or take, will be the centerpiece, Azazel Jacobs's Terri.
"In terms of artistic achievement, it's safe to say no producer has contributed to independent American cinema over the last two decades like Christine Vachon," writes Dennis Harvey, introducing his interview. Vachon will be delivering the State of Cinema address on Sunday evening (it's a busy time for her; she's also on Tribeca's Documentary and Student Short Film Competitions jury). Also at SF360, Michael Fox has cinema studies professor Bill Nichols give him a preview of the discussion he'll be leading on the Social Justice Documentary and talks with Bay Area filmmakers who have work in the lineup.

This one has all the ingredients to be something special. Absurd comedy and supernatural shenanigans take center stage in Emily Lou’s “The Selling”, a promising indie horror flick that follows the adventures of a desperate real estate agent as he tries to move an extremely haunted house. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t take long for all sorts of supernatural hijinks to ensue. And you thought buying a house was scary enough, right? Am I right? Before continuing, take a look at this synopsis: Richard Scarry is too nice. He’s a real estate agent who tries to talk people out of buying houses they can’t afford. When his business partner Dave Ross comes up with a scheme to flip an old house for profit he only agrees because he needs to find a way to pay for his sick mother’s medical bills. We're already excited about Emily Lou's horror comedy The Selling playing, but did you know it has great company?
At the San Francisco Film Festival April 21 through May 5 2011, women seem to be (dare I say it?) equally represented in terms of directors. I didn't do an exact count, but as I'm flippin' through the film lineup, I'm noticing a surprisingly large number of official selections directed by women. And not only that, but many of them are not the requisite boring documentaries and lame-ass crap women directors are usually relegated to screening at film festivals. Oh no. There are some awesomley genre-ic movies on the list that demand recognition.
I don't know what happened this year. Is it luck? Is it a good year? Have the poles of inequality and lame-assed filmmaking finally shifted? By Crom? We'll see. In the meantime, check out this kick ass lineup of movies...

I have to say, exploiting the recent real estate nightmares experienced by homeowners in the United States because of the recession (depression) is a savvy way to create a horror movie plot.
Barry Bostwick (Brad from The Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!!) is in this film as a demented excorcist - about a real estate agent named Richard Scarry (a tribute to the children's author?) who tries to sell a house. Only he can't, because it's haunted. Emily Lou directs The Selling, written by Gabriel Diani. It also stars Gabriel Diani, Janet Varney, Jonathan Klein, Etta Devine, and Nancy Lenehan.
This really silly-looking female-directed feature is screening at the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 29th and May 4th, 2011.

"Five Bedrooms. Four Baths. Twelve Ghosts."
This trailer for a new horror comedy called The Selling (formerly "The Selling of Scary Manor") has been floating around for a day or so. Not sure who disovered it first, but I just watched it over at 28Dla. As if the real estate market weren't bad enough, try being a realtor having to sell a haunted house. That's the problem facing one hapless real estate agent in the new horror comedy The Selling of Scarry Manor.
Richard Scarry is too nice. He’s a real estate agent who tries to talk people out of buying houses they can’t afford. When his business partner Dave Ross comes up with a scheme to flip an old house for profit, he only agrees because he needs to find a way to pay for his sick mother’s medical bills.
As Richard and Dave start fixing up the house for buyers, it becomes obvious why their real estate nemesis, Mary Best, was so eager to pass the house along to them. Disembodied voices tell them to leave, walls bleed, and a portal to the spirit realm opens in an upstairs closet.
