With its second season now airing on Itvx in the UK, the creator and the producer behind Irish comedy-drama The Dry both sat down at Dublin’s Storyhouse festival to give attendees a masterclass in how they attempted to grab audiences in the first five minutes of Season One.
The series, which is written by Nancy Harris and produced by Element Pictures’ Emma Norton, follows Shiv Sheridan (Roisin Gallagher) as she returns to Dublin after years of partying in London. She tries to navigate a new phase of her life but trying to stay sober and being back with her family is not easy.
After showing the audience the first few minutes of the show, both Harris and Norton reflected on the craft of building a big opening scene that would keep the audience wanting more while also introducing the characters.

Is there a Falcon in the house? Yes, there is, in fact, because Anthony Mackie joins us on this week’s show to talk apocalypse survival, not listening to Taylor Swift, and of course Twisted Metal, which comes to Paramount+ next week.
Elsewhere, James has a revelation about 3 Body Problem, Kay ponders the existential dilemma of slow-burn TV, and we get into this week’s slate, which includes the hunt for Lincoln’s killer in Manhunt on Apple TV+ and the return of Itvx’s The Dry. And then there’s Love Rat, a show on Channel 5 that might have been genetically engineered in a lab to give James a breakdown.

BAFTA gave out their Craft Awards on Sunday, 23 April. As with the Primetime Emmys, the British academy also devotes a weekend to celebrating the creative arts. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards are split into 20 categories, with six devoted to fictional programming, six to factual programming, and a further four in combined fields.
The BBC medical drama “This is Going to Hurt” won three awards — Editing (Fiction), Scripted Casting, and Writer (Drama) for show creator Adam Kay. Kay adapted his best-selling memoir, which chronciled his experiences as a doctor in the NHS. Kay won in a stacked category that included Pete Jackson (“Somewhere Boy”), Alice Oseman (“Heartstopper) and Tony Schumacher (“The Responder”). “This is Going to Hurt” will contend at the Emmys in the limited series categories.
Meanwhile, Writer (Comedy) went to Lisa McGee for her work on “Derry Girls,” which follows a teenage girl and family in friends in 1990s Northern Ireland.

Jason Ritter openly admits to benefitting from nepotism early on in his acting career.
Ritter’s father John, who died in 2003 aged 54, was known for playing Jack Tripper on the popular ABC sitcom Three’s Company.
During an appearance on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, the Parenthood actor admitted his first acting job as a child, voicing the Little Acorn in the 1991 cartoon The Real Story of O Christmas Tree, came as a result of his father’s connections.
“I will say, without any hesitation, this was like a full-on nepotism hire. I will admit that,” Ritter joked. “He [John] for sure got me the job. I did try to stay away from that later.”
John voiced Piney, the Little Acorn’s uncle in the cartoon.
Ritter went on to star in a number of roles across film and television, including The Tale, Frozen II and Netflix’s superhero drama Raising Dion.

Plus the whole team is practically giddy as we get back to the wilderness for Yellowjackets, sample Ireland's answer to Fleabag (apparently) with ITV's The Dry, and see what Steven Knight does with Dickens (this time) in BBC1's Great Expectations. Plus there's a whole to-do about cake and Kay comes perilously close to murdering James on air (fair).

Shadow and Bone viewers have called on Netflix to renew the series for another season amid uncertainty over the show’s future.
The fantasy series, adapted from books by Leigh Bardugo, has claimed the No 1 spot in Netflix’s “most watched chart”, usurping the serial killer drama You.
Despite this, the series is yet to be renewed for a third run of episodes.
Following the release of the second season on 16 March, fans of the series are petitioning the streaming service to commission a season three, with plenty of Bardugo’s source material still yet to make it to screen.

Ciarán Hinds has admitted that he had reservations about appearing in Game of Thrones due to the amount of sex scenes.
The Irish actor starred in HBO’s fantasy epic as Mance Rayder, a former member of the Knight’s Watch later known as the “King Beyond the Wall”.
In a new interview with The Independent, Hinds opened up about his time on the show, in which he appeared across three seasons from 2013 to 2015.
Hinds said that, despite the series being a huge hit, he was in two minds about taking on the role due to its excessive explicit content.
“I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling,” he told The Independent.
“But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.”

Behind some bins – big wheelie ones down an alley on Dublin’s Northside – a man and a woman, both oldish, are coupling frantically. Their al fresco pleasure is interrupted when they are spotted by the man’s daughter, who’s just come out of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
“It’s not what it looks like, Shiv,” explains her flustered father, as he makes himself decent while the woman, short and of Asian heritage, with cropped silver hair, yanks up her tights.
“It looks like an old Irish man f***in’ a woman behind some bins,” she says.
