Prior to the advent of the so-called “eco-vengeance” genre, Italian cinema used animals, or at least the symbolism they naturally encapsulate, in the most disparate contexts, from those coherent with their nature to more unusual and weird derivations. With regard to the singular use of animals in Italian cinema, a reference is certainly owed to Dario Argento’s first films—L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo, Il gatto a nove code, and Quattro mosche di velluto grigio—which were followed by huge commercial success that encapsulated what Argento had learnt from Alfred Hitchcock and the Nouvelle Vague, as well as from the literary heritage of Raymond Chandler, where animals appeared in the titles embodying the characters’ gestures, modus operandi, and personalities—the animal as a metaphor representing the diabolical “human” nature. Although the presence of animals in the titles is often justified, of course, by some narrative solution or gimmick,...

Double and Nothing: Babbit Blunders on Binary Barrymore
Jamie Babbit doubles down on Drew Barrymore for her sixth feature, The Stand In, a somewhat standard riff on two unrelated lookalikes trading places in a superficial simulacrum of celebrity. It’s been five years since Babbit’s last feature, 2015’s Addicted to Fresno, and the director’s indie aesthetics have often been part of her oeuvre’s ragtag charm, from her blazing inception with 1999’s But I’m a Cheerleader and on to various playful items, like the pulp genre enjoyments of The Quiet (2005) and even 2012’s Breaking the Girls.
Having directed a head spinning number of different television episodes for a diverse array of notable television series, it’s a pleasure to find Babbit unveil a new offering, even if the almost alarming amount of cameo appearances in her latest don’t add up to much behind her lead star’s...

When it comes to releasing unique and collectible Blu-ray box sets (such as their Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection), Severin Films has done an amazing job preserving horror history, and this summer they'll continue to do so with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, featuring Umberto Lenzi's collaborations with Carroll Baker:
"On June 30th, Severin Films is bringing together the complete collaborative works of two cult film legends with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, which includes superlative editions of Orgasmo, So Sweet… So Perverse, A Quiet Place To Kill, and Knife Of Ice.
Italian writer/director Umberto Lenzi helmed popular peplums, created extreme poliziotteschi, and invented the Italian cannibal phenomenon. Hollywood actress Carroll Baker was the Golden Globe® winning/Academy Award® nominated star of Baby Doll, Giant and The Carpetbaggers. Together in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they made four landmark films that changed the erotic thriller and giallo genres forever.

But I’m a Sex Addict: Babbitt Returns to Dark Comedy with Mixed Results
Though the film rests rather comfortably on the shoulders of its talented lead actresses, director Jamie Babbit’s latest, Addicted to Fresno, overreaches in its efforts to deliver an endearing yet cynical familial drama about two sisters maturing and growing closer together as they cover up an accidental murder. Written by talented television writer Karey Dornetto (“South Park,” “Portlandia”), here writing her first feature, a number of winning elements are present to constitute a successfully cynical dark comedy, but more often than not, a reliance on too many familiar narrative points tends to mish-mash the highs and lows into a mediocre black comedy. Fans of the notable cast members should find much to appreciate, though one is left with a curiously uninvolved feeling once the credits roll.
Recovering sex addict Shannon (Judy Greer) is having a difficult time staying sex free.

Horror director Lucky McKee unfortunately remains one of those unknown, peripheral genre names, mostly thanks to a number of compromised or abandoned projects following his formidable 2002 debut, May. Over the past several years, he’s made headlines for 2011’s The Woman (another underrated gem from his filmography), and most recently the co-directed effort All Cheerleaders Die in 2013, an expansion of his 2001 short film, which is more or less the comically inclined romp you’d assume it to be. Prizing complex female characterizations, usually featuring muse Angela Bettis, McKee’s twisted visions, though few and far between, are enjoyable and entertaining, usually enhanced by a bit of subtext. About a decade ago, McKee’s sophomore feature, The Woods, would finally land on DVD in the Us following a limited festival circuit run, treated to a torturous release platform despite featuring several notable cast members. A period piece set amongst an all-girls...

"Ya'll ready for this?!" Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for the indie comedy Addicted to Fresno, from filmmaker Jamie Babbit (Breaking the Girls, Itty Bitty Titty Committee). This kooky indie stars Judy Greer & Natasha Lyonne as sisters at a hotel in Fresno, California. When one of them accidentally kills a guy, they go to extreme lengths to cover up the crime. The supporting cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Clea DuVall, Allison Tolman, Ron Livingston, Molly Shannon and Fred Armisen. This looks funny at times, but doesn't seem like anything that stands out in a crowd. At least it's nice to see more of Judy Greer. Here's the official trailer for Jamie Babbit's Addicted to Fresno, found on YouTube (via The Playlist): Synopsis: Two co-dependent sisters, a recovering sex addict and a lonely lesbian (played by Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne) who work as hotel maids, go to ludicrous...

What happens when a one night stand lasts a bit longer than you were expecting? That's the simple idea behind the upcoming comedy "#Stuck," which, as the title implies, finds two people in each other's space for well beyond what they had intended. The partially crowdfunded movie was written and directed by Stuart Acher, stars Joel David Moore ("Avatar," "Shark Night 3D") and Madeline Zima ("Californication," "Breaking The Girls"), and follows a couple whose one evening of passion comes to a grinding halt the next day, when they get stuck in traffic. And as you'll see below in this exclusive clip, it's a scenario that causes the tension to rise between the pair, while right after that, a new Red Band trailer sets the mood for the entire comedy. "#Stuck" opens in theaters and on VOD on October 10th. Watch below.

The comedy follows lonely but stoic lesbian Martha (Lyonne), whose sister Shannon (Greer), a sex addict with no impulse control and a long history of poor decisions, winds up back in Fresno cleaning hotel rooms with her. Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"The World's End"
What's It About? The third installment of Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, following 2004's "Shaun of the Dead" and 2007's "Hot Fuzz," "The World's End" features a group of five reuniting friends. They embark on an epic drinking marathon in an effort to top their pub crawl from 20 years prior, only this time an unexpected alien invasion strikes.
Why We're In: A refreshing blend of comedy and sci-fi, "The World's End" is the perfectly charming film to spoof the apocalypse genre and keep you endlessly entertained. Plus, it features hilarious (as always) performances from Wright staples Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.

Alright Alfred Hitchcock (or Patricia Highsmith) fans, see if you remember this one : Two strangers meet by chance, hit it off and soon realize that each of them has a person in their life that they'd like dead. They get to talking more and realize that if each kills the other's enemy, neither will be suspected and they can both live happily ever after.Yes, we're in Strangers on a Train territory here, only this time, the stranger inciting the murder plot is a rich, hard-partying lesbian, Alex, who seduces a previously straight, financially strapped law student, Sarah. In other words, Breaking the Girls should be sexy, devilish fun -- It takes a classic setup, brings the homoerotic subtext of the original to the surface...

I had you at bras and panties, didn't I? Breaking The Girls is the latest film from director Jamie Babbit who also directed the cult classic But I'm A Cheerleader. Breaking The Girls doesn't seem to have much of a black comedy feel to it and instead takes the old criss cross plot device from Strangers On A Train and adds a sapphic twist. Many comedy fans were happy to hear the news last month that former "Fallon" writers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin were getting a half-hour HBO comedy pilot with Lorne Michaels serving as executive producer. Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the project has a director who's a familiar indie film world name. Jamie Babbit, whose breakout film was 1999's "But I'm a Cheerleader," will helm the still-untitled Atlanta-set pilot, slated to shoot this September. While Babbit's directed several films since "Cheerleader," including 2005's "The Quiet" and 2007 SXSW Competition winner "Itty Bitty Titty Committee," she's been much more active in television, directing episodes of everything from "Gilmore Girls" and "The L Word" to "Drop Dead Diva" and "United States of Tara." It features the bikini clad duo of Madeline Zima ('Heroes') and Agnes Bruckner ('Blood and Chocoloate') taking a dip and getting up close and personal together. The film revolves around the two main leads who become lesbian lovers with more morbid benefits. These benefits being a pact to kill each others enemies. This theme seems to be swarming the genre at the moment, is it feminism gone too far? #11. Breaking the Girl - Jamie Babbit Described by Jamie Babbit as a "genre-trashy fun; gratuitous girl-on-girl make-out scenes and three-inch heels", Breaking the Girl which is based on a screenplay by Mark Distefano and American Psycho's Guinevere Turner stars indie actors Madeline Zima, Shawn Ashmore and Agnes Bruckner. Having presented a pair of short films almost a decade back (her 2002 short “Stuck,” was a winner of the 2002 Sundance Film Festival's Special Mention Jury Prize), Babbit's (middle person in random set pic above) latest would be a good fit for a Park City at Midnight showing. Gist: When university student Sara (Bruckner) is slandered by a hostile classmate, she is befriended by the manipulative Alex (Zima) who proposes the perfect, untraceable crime - to kill each other's arch enemies. When Alex actually goes through with it, Sara finds herself being framed for murder. Producers: Unknown(Ioncinema.com Preview Page // IMDb...

Principal photography has been completed on Jamie Babbit's new horror-thriller 'Breaking the Girl'. The production from Myriad Pictures and Future Films was penned by Guinevere Turner ('BloodRayne') and Mark Distefano and is being described essentially as a modern-day 'Strangers on a Train' type movie whereby the two leads plan to kill each other's enemies. The sexy duo Madeline Zima ('Heroes') and Agnes Bruckner -below ('Vacancy 2: The First Cut') play the two female leads Alex and Sara respectively. They're joined by the likes of Shawn Ashmore ('Mother's Day'), Kate Levering, Melanie Mayron and John Stockwell. Actress Brit Marling ('Arbitrage') was previously attached to the project to play the role of Sara. Director Babbit previously described the project as 'genre-trashy fun; gratuitous girl-on-girl make-out scenes and three-inch heels'. So everyone's a winner here....
