The film is loosely based on an ill-fated road trip June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson took after graduating college.
June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson dedicate the movie to their late mothers, Diane Raphael and Kathy Wilson.
Casey Wilson told New York Magazine in an interview that the only person to blame for the opening scene with her and June Diane Raphael peeing on the sidewalk with their bare butts showing is herself because she co-wrote it. "We wrote that the movie opens on a shot of our bare asses, and when we were on all fours in a van on the side of the road, with our makeup artist lovingly touching up our asses with ass makeup, I thought, 'Why did we write this?' And I needed an ass double, but we didn't have the budget!"
Casey Wilson's real-life dad has a brief cameo during the pageant scene.
