In its first season, Hulu’s original series “The Bear” showed more than mere flashes of potential. Critics, and especially audience members who had worked in food service heaped praise on the initial batch of episodes when they debuted in 2022, and Hulu managed to turn around a second season just one year after the release of the first.
Its haste has paid off in a big way. Season 2 of “The Bear” saw a 70% increase in hours streamed over Season 1 in the first four days of its availability. The new episodes have a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and 91% of audience reviews are also positive. Simply put, “The Bear” is a smash-hit for Hulu, which might be working on a third season even now if it weren’t for the Writers Guild of America strike.

“Thank you, chef.” It has been a very good week for the folks at Hulu and The Beef, as the second season of the acclaimed TV show “The Bear” has become the most-watched premiere for an FX show in the service’s history. According to the Disney-owned streamer, the show saw a 70% increase from Season 1 to 2 in terms of total hours streamed during the first four days of release. Admittedly, “The Bear” was a surprise hit last summer and took some time to catch on, but entered its second season with as much anticipation as any summer premiere, so the disparity between the season premieres shouldn’t come as much of a shock.

Hulu’s sci-fi TV series, Class of ’09, is about the ethical question of how far people can trust a machine learning system and how to recognize that an AI has gone rogue. The series showcases how the graduates from the Quantico Batch of 2009 become respected agents in the FBI, but the development of an AI that can detect crimes and criminals with unbelievable accuracy takes things into a spin. The series questions the necessity as well as the validity of AI and the extent of human dependency on it while also showing us that it’s imperative to stop relying too much on such artificial intelligence.
Today, there are thousands of AI bots that can help you do tasks that would have taken years of professional training in moments, and professionals from every field hate it. Some are even predicting that AI might soon overtake human labor and result...

The final episode of Hulu’s Class Of ’09 was released today, and it saw the downfall of the system that had become an autocratic machine targeting anyone based on their actions without the benefit of human judgment. The dream of Tayo Michaels for an equal society had been grossly misinterpreted by this system that was making decisions and assigning punishments on its own. However, the finale, as well as the overall treatment of the characters and the main storyline, seem rather haphazard and replete with plot holes. Here’s a detailed look into all the problems that the series had and a theory as to why such mistakes came to pass in Hulu’s ambitious project, Class Of ’09.
The series consisted of 8 episodes that gradually broke down how American law and governance became increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence for preventing crime and peacekeeping. At the center of the...

The season finale of Class Of ’09 was released today, and it’s the final stand of humanity against an autocratic machine that commits large-scale injustice. In the penultimate episode, Tayo Michaels, the FBI Director, was removed from his position for trying to shut down the system, and now it’s him and his fellow graduates from Quantico who go up against the machine to try and take it down. It’s 2034, and predictive arrests have become the biggest concern for the country as human rights have been steamrolled. Will the graduates be able to topple the system, or will machines reign supreme?

Tom Rob Smith’s Class of ’09 released its third episode today, and we’re starting to understand how the intimidating technology of the future, which arrests people based on predictions, came into being. In the previous episodes, we found Ashley Poet (Kate Mara) being assigned to seek out her FBI batchmate Hour Nazari (Sepideh Moafi) in 2034. Additionally, the FBI director of the future, Tayo Michaels, realized domestic terrorist Mark Tupirik was planning something big and needed to be stopped in 2023. With the well-being of the entire country at stake, Tayo needs to apprehend Tupirik early. The episode opens with Poet learning to do a J-turn with a car in Quantico in 2009 before things turned serious. So, how exactly do things turn serious in Episode 3 of Class of ’09?

FX‘s Class of ’09 is taking the FBI genre to another level on Hulu, presenting a story spanning three distinctive points in time. Centering around a young class of FBI agents, the series tracks their journey through the system and the changing U.S. criminal justice system which is altered by artificial intelligence. Poet (Kate Mara) and Hour (Sepideh Moafi) are among those agents. Classmates and roommates, Poet and Hour’s bond is explored in the three timelines, beginning in 2009, in present-day 2023, and in the future. “I was intrigued by exploring the three different time periods in a person’s life,” Mara tells TV Insider. Admittedly, the actress says, “When I read the first couple of episodes, Brian Tyree [Henry] was already attached, so I was really excited to get the chance to work with him.” Along with Henry, Brian J. Smith features beside Mara and Moafi. (Credit: Richard Ducree...

Hulu and FX’s newest release in the sci-fi/thriller genre is a fresh take on a group of FBI trainees who grow up to move to separate paths in life, only to be brought back together because of a common problem. Created by Tom Rob Smith, who also authored the story Class of ’09, it centers around FBI graduates, each of whom has separate interests in life, but nobody is willing to lay down their cards, at least not this early in the series. The show stars Kate Mara, Brian Tyree Henry, Brian Smith, and Sepideh Moafi, among others, and although it’s too early to give a decisive verdict, some of the actors are doing justice to their roles. Here’s what happens in the first two episodes:

Before we even meet the class of 2009 in “Class of ’09,” we’re in the year 2034 being introduced to Tayo Michaels (Brian Tyree Henry), who — according to a news chyron — is the director of the FBI. Soon after, when we’re in what the show’s chyrons repeatedly call “The Past,” we learn Tayo is, surprise surprise, a member of the titular class, and he’s struggling to pass a physical at Quantico — a physical he must complete in order to become an FBI agent.
So… are we meant to think the future FBI Director really isn’t going to graduate? Should we be wondering if he only made it into the Bureau because of special treatment? Or, assuming the flash-forward is meant to steer attention away from if he graduates and toward how he graduates, should we be focused on the casual discrimination he faces from one of his fellow students?...

In the spring of 2020, a handful of shows developed to air on the basic cable channel FX instead debuted exclusively on Hulu. It was an attempt to better integrate different parts of the Disney corporate family in the aftermath of Disney acquiring most of Fox’s film and television assets, as well as an acknowledgment that more and more viewers were waiting to watch shows on streaming. Cutting out the legacy media middleman just seemed like a logical next step toward the medium’s future.
It was also, however, extremely confusing.

The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.
“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.

At times you may think you’re watching a reboot of ABC’s Quantico (2015-18). Then you’re suddenly thrust into a futuristic Minority Report-style sci-fi allegory. Scribe Tom Rob Smith’s (London Spy) intriguingly cluttered thriller Class of ’09, the latest provocative FX drama to go straight to streaming on Hulu, ambitiously toggles between three time periods, when perhaps one would have sufficed. In 2009, we meet an FBI training class, including former nurse and underdog champion Poet (House of Cards’ soulful Kate Mara), disillusioned insurance agent Tayo (Atlanta’s brooding Brian Tyree Henry), Iranian immigrant offspring Hour (Sepidah Moafi) and a few slices of generic and underwritten beefcake played by such familiar faces as Brian J. Smith and Jake McDorman. They’re all put through the physical and psychological wringer, as we’ve seen many times before. The present-day storyline, set in 2023, finds these now-seasoned agents well ...

Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.
The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

A timely drama that contemplates AI-era criminal justice, FX on Hulu’s “Class of ‘09” sounds like must-watch TV for admirers of futuristic realism. The subgenre, also referred to as lo-fi sci-fi, swaps hyper-mechanized cornucopias with the grounded, gradually evolved settings of “After Yang,” “Her” and “Ex Machina.”

A proper law enforcement show features high-octane scenes, a fast pace, and a few twists and turns here and there.
It becomes much more special if the characters stand out uniquely or develop a bond akin to a chosen family.
Class of '09 is a show set inside the FBI that follows a group of unique characters whose journey to the FBI is not typical. These characters had lived another life before joining the Bureau, which is supposed to make them different from others.
Sometimes, we talk about something taking off before it crashes and burns. But rarely do we talk about something igniting, failing to take off, and disintegrating at an excruciatingly slow pace.
Class of '09 is not breaking new ground, with some excellent FBI shows having been broadcast in the last ten years.

As the WGA strike continues to unfold, one of the key issues at its center has to do with artificial intelligence. While AI may be a relatively new concern for many in Hollywood, it’s old hat to Tom Rob Smith and Joe Robert Cole, two of the executive producers behind FX’s upcoming drama “Class of ’09.” Though their new series examines the dangers of law enforcement relying too heavily on AI, Smith isn’t concerned that AI in its modern form will fully replace writers.
“I’m less worried than other people are right now on the story creation, but I could be just naive about that right now,” Smith, who previously served as an executive producer and writer for “The Assassination of Gianna Versace: American Crime Story,” told TheWrap.

Plot: Spanning multiple decades and told across interweaving timelines, the series examines the nature of justice, humanity and the choices we make that ultimately define our lives and legacy.
Review: Legal thrillers and series about law enforcement are staples of the small screen and rarely get the chance to play with the conventions of the genre. The new limited series Class of ’09 tries to upend expectations by using now-familiar narrative devices like flashbacks and flash-forwards to give us a series set in three distinct eras. Following a group of FBI agents in 2009, 2023, and 2034, we can see how these individuals change and grow closer and apart over four decades. Class of ’09 also uses the divisive concept of artificial intelligence to tell a prescient story that is not quite as thrilling as it should be. Anchored by another standout performance from Brian Tyree Henry, Class of ’09 is intriguing but uneven.

Every so often, there are actors who will emerge as being so routinely outstanding each time you see them that any project they join becomes one worth seeking out for them alone. Brian Tyree Henry is one such actor. Each character he embodies, even when part of an ensemble, is the one that everything feels like it is orbiting around. He is a reliable center of gravity who can make the most of even the flimsiest of material, bolstering it by the sheer force of his presence that always ends up making you sit up and take notice.
