Showtime has acquired two new music documentaries to air in February, both featuring concert footage and interviews with bands like Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros and more. "Mumford & Sons: The Road to Red Rocks," set to make its world television premiere on Friday, February 1 at 8pm, documents the English folk rock band as they perform in two sold-out concerts in Colorado's Red Rocks amphitheater. The film, which is directed by duo Fred & Nick, includes interviews with the band and a look at life on the road. Set to premiere on Friday, February 8 at 8pm, "Big Easy Express" is part concert doc and part road movie, following Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Tennessee's Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford & Sons as they travel from California to New Orleans via a vintage train. The film was directed by Emmett Malloy ("The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights") and has been.

At the pinnacle of the band’s critical and financial success, the decision to lay LCD Soundsystem to rest was and remains a conundrum. James Murphy, the creative mind behind the band, started making music under the LCD guise in his 30s with no expectations other than to have some fun, but when his dance-centric tunes started to catch the public ear, he decided to form a band that could perform his songs live. Years later, putting a massive bookend on the project, Murphy and the crew booked Madison Square Garden for their final show. With the Sundance preemed Shut Up And Play The Hits, directors Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern documented not only LCD Soundsystem’s final live performance, but managed to construct a highly conflicted portrait of Murphy over the 48 hours prior to the event. The question isn’t whether or not his final show will be a success,...

Kristen Bell is set to star in a new comedy called The Lifegaurd, which was written and being directed by Liz W. Garcia. According to Deadline, "Bell will play Leigh, a reporter on the verge of 30 who abandons her life in New York City, returns home to get her high school job as a lifeguard, and starts a dangerous relationship with a 16-year-old delinquent." Yeah... that should be an interesting movie, and that's going to be one lucky 16-year-old kid. I never thought I'd see Bell play a ephebophile, but here we are.
Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan have been cast to star along side each other in a romantic comedy called The F Word. Accroding to THR, "F Word takes a comedic look into the lives of two twentysomethings who meet at a party and hit it off." I don't know why but I never thought I would see Radcliffe in a romantic comedy,...

Just when you thought Green Day had faded into obilivion, they enter back into the spotlight – and usually in a major way. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a decade since their American Idiot album, which led to mash-ups, Broadway shows and even an upcoming Tom Hanks-produced feature film. They’re now ready to release not one, not two, but three albons (¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!), beginning this September and now they’ve got two documentaries in the pipeline.
Speaking with Billboard, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that Tim Lynch (who collaborated with the band on their concert DVD Green Day: Bullet in a Bible) and Tim Wheeler (editor of the fantastic tour documentary The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights) are working together on the two films, one of which will give a behind-the-scenes looking at the making of their trio of albums. They’re a punk rock band from the late 80s named after their great love of sweet Mary Jane, but during their 25-year history Green Day developed much loftier ambitions for their music. After releasing American Idiot back in 2004 (which spawned a Broadway musical and now has a film adaptation in the works) and 21st Century Breakdown in 2009, the band is now planning to release three new albums between September 2012 and January 2013. The film-related news accompanying those three albums -- titled ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! -- is that two documentaries will be made to go alongside their release. Filmmakers Tim Lynch (the producer of the band’s Live DVD “Green Day: Bullet in a Bible”) and Tim Wheeler (who worked on “The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights”) are creating one documentary on the making of the trio of albums, and a second which will be made up from...

Before they officially broke up, director Emmett Malloy beautifully captured some of the last few concerts The White Stripes had with the documentary Under Great White Northern Lights. Now he is back and expanding his scope with a cross-country tour of three different bands, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show.
Taking place on a single train across six different concerts, we’ve got the first trailer for Big Easy Express today and it looks to follow-up the excellent cinematography and intimate behind-the-scenes moments captured in Malloy’s last feature. Although I’m not a fanatic for any of these groups, this could certainly sway me. Check out the poster and trailer below via Apple.

Whenever it's time for another list of films, it seems that it is also time for another disclaimer, and this is no exception. If you'd like to skip directly to the Top 10 movies of the year, I won't hold it against you. That's a serious warning, because this is crazy long. Let's be honest, most of you are inclined to wait for the movie of this list to come out.
It's the time of year when film critics of every calibre come together to finally agree on something - that we'll pretend there is some objective realm of "goodness" to film (much like that first chapter of the poetry book in Dead Poets Society), and that such lists make any sense in any case.
However you choose to look at the world of film, I find it hard to comprehend the idea of comparing them across genre, and most of the time even within one.

It makes sense that the first full song performed in The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights would be “Let’s Shake Hands.” Emmett Malloy’s unusually stylish rock-doc is about The Stripes’ 2007 Canadian tour, during which they made a point of playing in remote towns and provinces—in every territory in the country, in fact—while finding time at each tour stop to make an unusual promotional appearance and meet some new friends. They played on city buses, boats, retirement homes, elementary schools, and bowling alleys, where they rolled a full game while rocking. The garage-rock duo ...

The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights (Warner Bros.) Make no mistake, Under Great White Northern Lights is not just a tour film or concert documentary—it’s a feature film about The White Stripes. Directed by Emmett Malloy, it follows the Detroit rock giants across a great green swath of land on their first-ever tour of Canada. Visually, the film is gorgeous—processed in black, bleached-out white, and, you guessed it, red. Malloy interweaves live footage with intimate backstage moments, interviews with Jack and Meg, and the band’s sub-Arctic adventures. Under Great White Northern Lights is a must for any serious fan of rock ‘n’ roll, and, to Emmet Malloy’s credit, an example for future music documentary filmmakers. Malloy followed the Stripes in the summer of 2007, but it wasn’t a conventional tour confined to smoky bars and putrid rock clubs overflowing with Carling Black Label.

Director: Emmett Malloy Featuring: Jack White, Meg White The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights follows Jack and Meg through the ten provinces of Canada, playing just about every venue imaginable. While the color-coordinated duo from Detroit play a number of typical venues, the film frequently finds them jamming with the locals in a bowling alley, pool hall, on a boat, in front of a flour mill, and on a bus in Winnipeg, providing a crowd-pleasing cover of “The Wheels on the Bus.” The White and White team seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, placing a taste for adventure above the need to be rock stars. Under Great White Northern Lights is satisfying because it doesn’t go too deep into aimless conversations with the band, but instead focuses on the music, with excellent live footage that continues to hammer home the raw power that has made The White Stripes...

This week I present a selection, below, of more of my favorite posters from the International Film Festival Rotterdam where the walls of every theater and meeting place were crammed with posters and flyers. Though a couple of these may have appeared at earlier festivals, all were new to me. The one design that I loved that I could not find a better image of can be seen high on the wall above: the poster for Cameron Jamie’s 10-minute ode to furniture humping Massage the History (yes, even short films have posters at Rotterdam). Here are sixteen of my favorites:
Above, clockwise from top left: Bruno Safadi and Noa Bressane’s Brazilian counterculture doc Belair; Emmanuel Laurent’s nouvelle vague history lesson, Two in the Wave, whose poster features a photo of an astonishingly young Truffaut and Godard; Serge Bromberg’s doc on Henri-Georges Clouzot’s unfinished L’enfer,...

Before he was on the receiving end of a half-dozen jokes at the Emmy Awards last night, Kanye West got the spoof treatment from none other than White Stripes/ Raconteurs/ Dead Weather leader Jack White on Friday night at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In town to celebrate the documentary "The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights," White barged in on director Emmett Malloy during a Q&A session and grabbed the microphone from him.
The Toronto Star reported that White emerged from the wings of the Elgin Theatre stage and blurted, "I'm gonna let you finish, I'm gonna let you finish, but Orson Welles had one of the greatest films of all time!"
Appreciating the riff on West's now-infamous bum-rush at last weekend's VMAs, the crowd reportedly cheered and whooped as White ran back offstage and Malloy had a laugh about the incident.

Even as the Toronto Film Fest winds down, there are still a few celeb sightings—not to mention the splendor and spectacle of the Cadillac People's Choice Awards. And did we mention the Kanye West weirdness? Friday's highlight—a moment bridging the gap between music fans and movie fans—wasn't just the premiere screening of the rock 'n' roll concert documentary The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights at the Visa Elgin Theatre. The real capper came in the postscreening Q&A, as director Emmet Malloy answered a question from the audience about the inspiration behind the doc. As Malloy talked about the genesis of the project, White Stripes frontman Jack White rushed...
