Gerard Butler is re-teaming with the director of Den Of Thieves, this time to save one of the world’s most iconic buildings in Empire State.
You might have thought that there was nothing left for Geostorm star Gerard Butler to save. The world. The US President. A plane full of people. His family, when the pesky wider world wouldn’t play ball and refused to be saved.
Let’s face it, the list of things that Gerard Butler has saved is longer than the list of things he hasn’t saved. And with the production of Empire State now confirmed, the list of things Gerard Butler hasn’t saved will grow even shorter.
According to Deadline, the film will be a comedic action-thriller that will see ‘the Empire State Building coming under attack by a military contractor hellbent on revenge.’

Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin are returning for Greenland 2, that’s going by the name of Greenland: Migration. More here.
One of the best of Gerard Butler’s most recent outings – and the man has a solid eye for a script – is Greenland, a movie whose release bounced around a little before landing at the end of 2020. That was the year of course when cinemas were shut for the most part, and so very few people got to see Greenland on the big screen.
Still, its video on demand release comfortably got the film into profit, and talk began shortly after of picking up where the first film left off, with a Greenland 2.
Well, Greenland 2 is now Greenland: Migration, and filming is due to start this April.
It’ll reunite Gerard Butler with director Ric Roman Waugh, with whom he’s made Kandahar, Angel Has Fallen and the original Greenland movie.

Though the title Greenland: Migration might lead you to suspect that the sequel to 2020's Gerard Butler starrer is somehow crossing over with the recent animated duck film from Illumination, it's not the case. We'd still watch that, but this Migration promises to instead follow the drama as Butler's John Garrity and his family continue their struggle to survive an apocalyptic situation. The new film is about to start shooting.
You might recall that Greenland saw Butler and Morena Baccarin playing John and his estranged wife Allison as fragments from a comet start to batter the Earth, levelling cities and, in the case of one particularly large chunk, threatening an extinction-level event. Upon learning of a possible safe heaven (the title somewhat gives away the location), the family must make their way there.

In 2020, audiences would watch a global disaster unfold in front of their eyes, and ironically, that year would also bring us the disaster movie Greenland. Ric Roman Waugh’s thriller starred Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin and follows a family’s struggle to get to emergency proceedings as they’re selected for shelter from the impending doom of a comet hurling toward our planet. Unlike most disaster films, this story was told from the perspective of everyday citizens simply trying to evade the crazy panic of the population in order to seek refuge. Talks of a sequel have been going on for a while and Deadline now reports that Greenland: Migration is set to film this April with the cast returning along with Ric Roman Waugh and screenwriter Chris Sparling. Sparling co-writes this entry with Mitchell Lafortune. The plot, according to Deadline, reads, “The Garrity family must leave the safety...

The two companies became close during STX’s go-shop period after Najafi Companies announced a 173M agreement to acquire the studio back in December. STX opted to remain independent with Najafi and extra financing from Birch Grove LP and 777 Partners, thus divorcing from its merger with India’s Eros International as Deadline first reported.
STX will remain an independent studio outside the Lionsgate deal, with plans to produce 12-15 movies annually composed of theatrical and streaming titles.

Film studio STX has placed a subsidiary company containing the rights to Gerard Butler’s 2020 film “Greenland” into Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Filed on Feb. 28 in Louisiana by ErosSTX President and General Counsel Noah Fogelson, the motion asks the bankruptcy court for relief in the form of time — time for STX to pay its creditors and to find the capital to co-finance and co-produce a sequel to the disaster movie, co-starring “Homeland” actress Morena Baccarin.
Under the moniker Fso Jones LLC, the bankruptcy filing lists the “Greenland” rights at $50 million in assets and up to $500 million in liabilities. As Variety previously reported, STX is in the midst of a sales process that includes private investment firm The Najafi Companies and, recently, suitors like Lionsgate.
“Fso Jones is the entity that owns the global distribution rights in the sequel to our film ‘Greenland’ which had tremendous success both domestically and throughout the international markets.

As STX looks to finalize its acquisition by the Najafi Companies, a deal that was announced in late 2021, it has put the sequel to Gerard Butler movie Greenland into bankruptcy protection.
The first Greenland grossed $52 million globally but did not have a U.S. theatrical run due to Covid. It wound up being sold to HBO Max in a lucrative deal, amid the first wave of release-model adjustments to the pandemic by the film business. STX then obtained rights to sequel Greenland: Migration for more than $75 million in a seismic transaction at the Cannes market last summer, that Deadline was the first to report.
A subsidiary of parent company ErosSTX called Fso Jones LLC, formally sought Chapter 11 protection from creditors on Monday in New Orleans. The move is designed to shield the next installment in a burgeoning franchise from any financial liabilities during the company’s ongoing transition to new ownership.

So, how to grade the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and especially the film marketplace? It would be too simple to describe it as a solid if unspectacular affair, when considering the presales business done virtually in the weeks leading up to the festival and a few small deals for the arthouse films that premiered on the Riviera.
A pandemic rebound will be measured in increments, but the most notable part of 2021 Cannes might well be the collective rallying cry elicited from buyers, sellers and the stars and filmmakers who routinely were moved to tears at Palais premieres, simply because of the feeling of getting back what was stolen from them by the Covid shutdown.
“It would be a mistake to talk about the market and the festival, contextualized by normalcy,” said FilmNation’s Glen Basner, who with CAA Media Finance led the charge on three big packages in the virtual market...

How exactly did we get by in a year in which without a Cannes Film Festival, there were no standing ovations over films from European auteurs, elaborate PR stunts on the Croisette and seemingly daily controversies over the latest persona non grata?
It’s been a long two years and change since “Parasite” started its historic awards run by winning the Palme D’Or at 2019’s Cannes, becoming the first film since “Marty” to win the Palme and the Best Picture Oscar. But now that Cannes is finally back, there’s already no shortage of buzz and French-ness, not to mention even a few sales.

STX has nabbed worldwide rights to “Greenland: Migration,” a sequel to the 2020 disaster film starring Gerard Butler.
In the biggest deal yet at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, STX shelled out $25 million to roll out the film in the U.S. and Canada and paid another $50 million for international territories. In line with STX’s distribution model, the sequel is being pre-sold to buyers in foreign markets to offset the massive $75 million price tag.
STX distributed the first film, which skipped theaters in the U.S. and debuted directly on premium video-on-demand platforms. The company didn’t disclose rental sales, so it’s unclear how many people watched “Greenland” at home. Outside of North America, “Greenland” played on the big screen in more than 26 countries and collected $52 million at the international box office.
Ric Roman Waugh is returning to direct the follow-up to “Greenland,” with screenwriter Chris Sparling on board to write the script.

The 2021 Cannes virtual market got its first bombshell as the Gerard Butler-starring “Greenland” sequel, “Greenland: Migration,” has sold to STX in a deal worth a whopping $75 million. Deadline first reported the news. The sequel was originally announced last month, with Butler and co-star Morena Baccarin confirmed to return and original director Ric Roman Waugh also attached.
As reported by Deadline: “STX is stumping up around $25M for domestic rights in a deal cut with Euro producer-seller Anton and CAA Media Finance. Multiple streamers were in the hunt for the movie. STX will also take all of international from Anton, in a pact which values foreign at around $50M. Anton took the project to the virtual market where it garnered significant interest from indie buyers, but — as often happens on successful franchise fare — STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and was happy to take the plunge.

Exclusive: In the biggest deal to go down at this year’s Cannes virtual market, STX has beaten out a number of rival bids for worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler action sequel Greenland: Migration.
STX is stumping up around $25 million for domestic rights in a deal cut with Euro producer-seller Anton and CAA Media Finance. Multiple streamers were in the hunt for the movie. STX will also take all of international from Anton in a pact that values foreign at around $50 million.
Anton took the project to the virtual market where it garnered significant interest from indie buyers, but — as often happens on successful franchise fare — STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and was happy to take the plunge. The movie will now run through the studio’s foreign output partners and is being sold to buyers in other markets.

Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” Leos Carax’s “Annette,” starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, and Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” with Frances McDormand and Timothée Chalamet, will provide star power at a 2021 Cannes Festival packed to overflowing with established and very often new European and world cinema arthouse talent.
The festival films will also drive much of Cannes’ business. Cannes’ business behemoth, a pre-sales market unveiling big indie projects — such as this year’s $60 million Vin Diesel vehicle “Muscle” — took place June 21-25 at the virtual Pre-Cannes Screenings.
“In some ways, Cannes this year has the opportunity to be the purest form of itself,” said Dylan Leiner at Sony Pictures Classics.
“Since the market was held virtually a couple of weeks before, festivalgoers will be able to focus on the programmed films almost exclusively without the distraction of a physical market, which so often favors splashy, large scale packages that grab headlines,...

Vin Diesel vehicle “Muscle,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” and the Zoe Kravitz-directed “Pussy Island” have proved early sales standouts at a contained virtual Pre-Cannes Screenings whose pre-sales market says a lot about the resilient vitality and ever greater complexity of the international film business.
Budgeted at a reported $60 million, which would make it the biggest project at the Screenings, “Muscle” moved waves when Leonine paid a reported high seven-figure pre-sale figure for Germany.
In an out-of-the-box move, Miramax announced Monday that it had secured worldwide rights to “The Holdovers,” reuniting Payne with “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti.
In earlier banner deals, reinvigorated under Michael de Luca, MGM landed global rights to “Pussy Island” and North America on Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” the biggest film in Cannes competition.
