We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

Director Sébastien Vaniček has been set to helm the next Evil Dead movie, and it’s easy to see why with his feature debut, the spider horror movie Infested. Playing like a cross between Attack the Block and Arachnophobia, Infested makes you care about its characters while delivering no shortage of skin-crawling spider horror moments.
Available now on Shudder, Infested follows Kaleb (Théo Christine), a lonely 30 year old who’s estranged from his best friend and at odds with his sister over their crumbling apartment. His dreams of opening a reptile zoo get drastically thwarted when he brings home an illegally acquired desert spider, one that happens to be gravid, and it gets loose. One hatched egg sac gives way to hundreds more, plunging the apartment building into a visceral arachnophobic nightmare.
It’s not just that Infested employs real spiders for many of the skin-crawling horror moments that make it so effective,...

La Guerra Del Tiburtino III has as its international title Rome: Tales From the Block, which shows you how much this film wears its influences on its sleeve. From the opening segment, in which an alien creature leaves a meteor and takes over the brain of a middle aged schlub, it is clear that this film operates in a similar vein to Joe Cornish' Attack The Block, setting an alien invasion in the outskirts of a city, where the people who live there consider themselves the have-nots. Outside of dealing with financial struggles, petty crime, poor neighborhood cleaning and such, they now also have to deal with an invasion of bodysnatchers. Invasion of the Body Snatchers itself is also a clear reference point, as are...

With Hollywood gearing up to celebrate some of the finest work of the film industry at the 2024 Oscars, discussions have emerged, with anticipation over potential winners and the chance to set new records. Among the topics of discussion is an Oscar milestone achieved by acclaimed actors Timothée Chalamet, his Dune: Part Two co-star Austin Butler and Paul Mescal. Notably, they are the only actors born in the 1990s to secure Oscar nominations for Best Actor.

Studiocanal launched a brand new official podcast – and the host might just be familiar to Film Stories listeners.
This is a bit of an odd story for me to write. Basically, well, because I’m in it. I’ll see how I get on.
The rather fine folks at Studiocanal have launched an official podcast, digging into the huge archive of movies under its stewardship. It’s arriving regularly, and as well as focusing on a movie of the month, there’s a broader exploration of other bits and bobs too.
Don’t take our word for it. Here’s Jamie McHale, the head of theatrical marketing at the studio: “We’re thrilled to be launching an official podcast to celebrate our incredible library of titles and upcoming theatrical releases. John Boyega wants to discuss the good book with you. Which book am I talking about? The Book of Eli, of course! Whispers around the watercooler imply that Boyega is prepping a prequel series based on 2010’s The Book of Eli. According to Deadline, Boyega will play a younger version of Eli, the character played by Denzel Washington in the Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes-directed film. Adding authenticity to the project is The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, who will create/write/executive produce the upcoming prequel series. The Book of Eli prequel series comes from Alcon Entertainment. They’ll bring the show to market to land a premium streaming venue.
In The Book of Eli, a drifter fights across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation. The story takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe resulting in an ecocide.

Alright, who here saw John Boyega on a fast track to stardom after "The Force Awakens" and said something along the lines of, "Boy, he sure seems like the next Denzel Washington?" without knocking on wood first? Because that monkey's paw has started to curl something fierce and left us with the latest batch of franchise IP news -- one that'll excite the more innocent among us while leaving the rest slightly jaded and cynical. What a time to be alive, folks.
So, remember when the Hughes brothers teamed up with "Rogue One" writer Gary Whitta on a 2010 apocalyptic movie by the name of "The Book of Eli" and we all agreed that it was a pretty solid piece of original genre work with something meaningful on its mind? That might feel like more and more of a foreign concept these days, especially compared to the current state of original sci-fi.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Damon Wayans Jr. and Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor have engaged David F. Walker to co-write and Ben Bishop to illustrate graphic novel “Shogun Run.”
Wayans Jr and Bachelor had revealed earlier this year that they would create and write the graphic novel. Set in 1990s South Central Los Angeles, “Shogun Run” is described as “Big Trouble in Little China” meets “Attack the Block.” David Uslan, Gary Glushon and Sean Oswolo will serve as creative advisors and producing partners on the project.
Walker is best known for graphic novel “Shaft: A Complicated Man” as well as the Will Eisner Award-winning comic book series “Bitter Root.” Bishop is known for his work on the New York Times bestseller “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.”
“Shogun Run” will be published by First Second, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers, in 2025. A series or film adaptation of the graphic novel is on the cards down the line.

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we cap off spooky season with the perfect meld between horror and action: the hallway fight in "Attack the Block.")
Do you feel that chill in the air? Halloween is once again upon us, providing the timeliest of reminders that the concepts of action and horror need not be mutually exclusive. Experienced viewers know full well that some of the best examples of either genre tend to share quite a few interests, whether it be James Cameron's "Aliens" taking a more militaristic approach than the claustrophobic, slasher-like original did or horror maestro John Carpenter staging a feature-length action sequence out of a classic horror premise in "Assault on Precinct 13," as we last covered in this column. There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”

There’s a soaring ambition but only a modest intent in Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s sober debut The Kitchen, a visually impressive depiction of things to come that simmers with all manner of protest but never hits boiling point. On the one hand, it’s a shame, ending on a quiet moment of understanding just as all hell is about to break loose. But on the other, it’s refreshing to see two young filmmakers trying to hone their storytelling skills rather than pour everything into a spectacular calling card. If Attack the Block hadn’t been so slavish in trying to siphon inspiration from much better cult movies to become a cult movie in its own right, it might have looked like this: a genuine vision of a nightmarish, dystopian future that will ring alarm bells for any city-dweller familiar with the depressing effects of gentrification.

Exclusive: Mathieu Kassovitz has quit the Paris Has Fallen television series citing creative differences. He has been replaced by Spiral actor Tewfik Jallab.
Deadline can reveal the casting switch as StudioCanal has released first-look images from the series, which is based on Gerard Butler‘s Has Fallen film franchise and is shooting in London and Paris.
The eight-part drama is made by StudioCanal, War of the Worlds producer Urban Myth Films, and two companies behind the film franchise: Millennium Media and Butler’s G-Base. Eclectic Pictures is also attached.
Kassovitz, best known for his 1995 film La Haine, is recovering from a motorbike accident last month, though his departure from Paris Has Fallen was for creative reasons. In his place, Jallab will play Vincent Taleb, a protection officer to a French Minister, who is the target of a terror group led by villain Jacob.

Snakes ‘n spiders: the two cornerstone big daddies of zoophobic horror. Sure, sharks are classic and rats have had their cinematic moments, but where would the genre be without eight-legged freaks and their slithering, limbless reptile brethren? People tend to fall into two categories – arachnophobic and ophidiophobic – but even if snakes give you the willies, director Sébastien Vaniček’s debut feature will leave you yearning for their cold-blooded embrace after you meet his army of creepy-crawly web-spinners.
Kaleb (Théo Christine) makes ends meet selling sneakers to the denizens of his low-income apartment block. A lover of reptiles, amphibians, and insects, Kaleb can’t resist when he comes across a mysterious spider for sale in a friend’s shop. After taking his new little friend home and placing her in a shoe box, the spider almost immediately escapes and quickly begins laying eggs in the walls and air vents of the building.

On a football field somewhere in New Orleans, a thunderstorm was brewing, and the cast and crew of the lesbian teen sex comedy “Bottoms” grew worried as they watched each other’s hair point skyward from the electric charge in the air.
“Okay, we should get off the field because I feel like lightning may strike,” director Emma Seligman told the crew.
They were gathered on that field to shoot Seligman’s second directorial effort, a satirical high school comedy about two queer, unpopular best friends, Pj (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), who start a female flight club at school with the ulterior motive of sleeping with cheerleaders. They promote it as a means of empowering women, and their peers actually join the club.

One of the most foundational pillars of horror also happens to be one of its more nebulously defined subgenres: the creature feature. At its most ubiquitous of definitions, the creature feature is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course.
A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters that turn on their makers, and everything in between. Often, a creature feature highlights nature running amok. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the horror movies that bring the monster mayhem in various ways, but all showcase excellent practical effects.
More specifically, this week belongs to underseen creature features that deserve more attention. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

At first glance, They Cloned Tyrone seems to find John Boyega on well-trodden ground. For the first 20 minutes of the Netflix release, Boyega’s face never changes from a hardened scowl as his character Fontaine goes through his day. Fontaine’s actions will seem familiar to anyone who’s heard an “urban” narrative, as Hollywood once often called them; Tyrone buys a 40 and some scratch-offs, he beats up a competitor on his corner, and he threatens a pimp who owes him money.
More than the generic constraints of Fontaine’s day, however, viewers may recognize elements of Boyega’s breakout character from more than a decade ago now in the unrepentant drug dealer he plays in Tyrone. Moviegoers first met Boyega as Moses in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block (2011), a film directed by Joe Cornish. Jamie Foxx seems to finally be on the mend, with him posting a video on Instagram that – for the first time – addresses the health challenge that sidelined him for months. You can see the video below, but Foxx, while not getting into specifics, says he went to “hell and back”, but also throws cold water on some of the rumors, notably that he went blind and became paralyzed. “Now, you know, by being quiet sometimes things get out of hand. People saying what I got, some people said I was blind, but as you can see … the eyes are working just fine. Said I’m paralyzed — I’m not paralyzed.” Foxx also thanked his family and doctors for not only supporting him, but also allowing him privacy from the media as he fought to regain his health. John Boyega has signed with UTA.
The Hollywood Reporter can confirm that alongside signing the British star in all areas, the talent agency has also signed Boyega’s production company UpperRoom Productions.
The deal marks Boyega’s return to Hollywood agencies after four years away, having left WME in 2019. Since then, he’s been solely repped by Femi Oguns at the U.K.’s Identity Agency Group.
Boyega — who found global fame thanks to the Star Wars trilogy sequel — has been on something of a roll recently. He landed a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for his turn in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology in 2021, while last year he earned critical praise for his lead performance in Breaking — which he also exec produced — and also starred in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic The Woman King.

John Boyega Dubs ‘The Last Jedi’ His Worst ‘Star Wars’ Movie: ‘In the Most Respectful Sense’ (Video)
John Boyega’s least favorite “Star Wars” film that he was in? Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” from 2017, he told “Hot Ones” in a video released Wednesday.
“Rank the three ‘Star Wars’ films you were in from best to worst,” Boyega reads from the cue card before responding: “Hell yeah, I’ll do it!”
“‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is most definitely the best,” said the actor, who played Stormtrooper-turned-rebel Finn in the cinematic trilogy that kicked off in 2015.
“Second, for me, comes Episode 9 [‘The Rise of Skywalker’]. The worst, in the most respectful sense, is Episode 8 [‘The Last Jedi’]. “But they’re all lovely,” he added after giving a significant side-eye glance.

“Trust no one.” That bit of advice is the cornerstone of every paranoid thriller, whether it’s The X-Files, 70s classics like Three Days of the Condor, or recent entries such as Get Out.
As a show about shape-shifting aliens, Secret Invasion should be able to excel at “trust no one” better than any of its predecessors. Nearly anyone can be a Skrull, even Tony Stark’s best friend Rhodey, a mainstay of the MCU since its beginning (albeit played by different actors).
And yet, four episodes in, Secret Invasion’s biggest mystery is about the nature of the show itself. Is this a thriller about secret agent Nick Fury uncovering a vast conspiracy? Is this a commentary about the insiders and outsiders in the American experiment? Is this a show about spies battling aliens?

Another one bites the dust as Netflix has canceled the supernatural series "Lockwood and Co." after just one season. This cancelation may come as a bit of a surprise, given that the show, which is adapted from Jonathan Stroud's popular series of books, was critically well-liked and seemingly found its audience. Be that as it may, we will not be getting more episodes.
According to Variety, Netflix opted not to renew the series, which debuted in early 2023. It featured a cast led by Ruby Stokes ("Bridgerton"), as well as relative newcomers like Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati. Taking to Instagram, Stroud addressed the cancelation with an air of gratitude, saying the following:
"I'd like to thank everybody who worked so hard to create something so special. It has been a joy working with Joe, Rachael, Nira, Brad and all my other friends at Complete Fiction. They made a show...

From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.
Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.
Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. The companies already have a number of projects in development.”

John Boyega has teased that an "exciting" 'Attack the Block' sequel is taking shape. The 31-year-old star is set to reprise his role as Moses in the follow-up to the 2011 sci-fi movie about an alien invasion in South London and revealed that he has been working closely with director Joe Cornish on the new project.John told the Metro newspaper: "Joe is in the writing lab, cooking that, writing up something cool."We've penned ideas, brainstormed, we've been to London and met up, traced every character to where they've been."We've looked at London, how much has changed. We're very, very excited."Boyega plays the veteran US marine Brian Brown-Easley, who resorted to holding up a bank due to his dire financial situation, in his new movie 'Breaking' and discussed the "sense of responsibility" he felt in telling the former serviceman's story. The 'Star Wars' actor...

John Boyega is remembering how he set out his stall at the very beginning of his career. Fresh out of drama school, he told his agent: “Don’t put me in no EastEnders, don’t put me in no The Bill, don’t put me in any of that.” He says this with force, from a room in Los Angeles, eyes steely. Distancing himself from some of the traditional routes into the industry for young actors was a mark of supreme confidence. Boyega knew the kind of projects he wanted – and didn’t want – to be associated with.
He was clear with his friend and agent Femi Oguns about the way forward. “Not to toot my own horn, but I had strict rules for Femi when I first signed with him. I want something that can be relatable, but unique. It has to have a spin on it.” So far,...

If you've found yourself missing the fictional "Attack The Block" crew in the years since Joe Cornish's excellent London-set alien invasion movie debuted, you're not alone. In an interview for the latest issue of Total Film, star John Boyega shared some insights about the long-anticipated sequel to the 2011 movie, and revealed that he's thought about the character he played, Moses, often in the intervening years.
"It's a character that I really understand," the "Star Wars" actor explained. "In creating him when I was younger, I really understand where he's at now. It's the character that's stuck with me the longest." The character of fifteen-year-old teen gang leader Moses was then-stage actor Boyega's first-ever role on film, and his breakout role as well. The often-underestimated and racially profiled heart of the film, Moses ends up under arrest in its final scene, but his neighbors know he's really a hero. "Every year I'd think,...

And then there's a clash of the Alexes, as our Mr Godfrey chats with Infinity Pool star Alexander Skarsgard about his crazy and intense new movie. Be warned: there's talk galore of dog collars and giant penises. The usual.

Bank robberies are a staple of cinema. They usually go two ways. There’s the secretive, carefully planned out break-ins like in Rifiki or Ocean’s 11, or there’s the all-guns-blazing approach of Heat and Point Break. But when Brian Easley walked into Wells Fargo Bank in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2017, he took neither approach. An exceptionally mild-mannered man, he held up the bank with a homemade bomb in order to ransom the Veteran Affairs association for unpaid disability benefits. Honouring this story with a mixture of empathy and grace, as well as considerable dramatic flair, Abi Damaris Corbin’s Sundance Special Jury: Ensemble Cast award winning feature Breaking splits the difference between the two genres, providing a modern update of Dog Day Afternoon that incisively indicts a broken system. Ahead of the film’s digital release on March 27th, we talked to Corbin about working with both John Boyega and...

Based on the books by Jonathan Stroud, and developed by Joe Cornish (“Attack the Block”), “Lockwood & Co.” has been a breakout for Netflix since its Jan. 27 premiere –– scaring away competitors from the streamer’s Top 10 list (which it’s reached in 74 countries).

The creator of Lockwood and Co has given Netflix the perfect reason to renew the series.
Since its release last month, the show has become a sleeper hti for the streaming service, which would typically make a season two renewal a certainty.
However in recent years Netflix has made a habit of cancelling shows despite them being at the top of the service’s most-watched charts, leading to widespread criticism.
Lockwood and Co fans enjoying the series are urging the service not to cancel the show – and Attack the Block director Cornish himself has explained why that would be a disappointing decision.
Firstly, season one covers the first two books in Jonathan Stroud’s books series: The Screaming Staircase and The Whispering Skull.
Speaking to Empire in the new issue, Cornish confirms that the initial run of Lockwood & Co covers the first two books in Stroud’s five-book series.
