  66-16 : [with his hand raised, too]  Sir, was it Lady Number 2 the Great?

  6 : Who is Number 1?

  1955 : [the kids all raise their hands]  Ah. The oldest question in Village history. Go on, 1100, you tell him.

  1100 : There is no Number 1. There never has been and there never will be. The concept of the Number 2 is an act of humility. The title reminds us that we are all public servants. Even Number 2. No one is Number 1.

• 6 : 1955, can you keep a secret?

  1955 : You're an oddity, 6.

  6 : I have these crazy thoughts. What if there was some other place, you know, outside the Village? How mad is that?

  1955 : I'm one of those lucky people who doesn't need distraction. Uh, no wife, no family. I'm not interested in alcohol or gambling. Sports, cigarettes, no. No. Everything I need is right here.

• 1955 : They're with me for history, first session. 1634 has them for math after that. Then it's sports. I don't see the point myself, really. And then they're with you for Surveillance Techniques all afternoon.

  6 : Doesn't that seem a bit odd, teaching surveillance to kids?

  1955 : Why should it? It's your subject.
