Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors espouse their pet theories, hot takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
Although Lindsay Lohan is primarily known for her iconic roles in Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls (2004), she also has quite a few TV movies under her belt. After taking some time away from the spotlight, the former teen idol dipped her toes back into Hollywood in 2022 by starring in Netflix’s holiday rom-com Falling for Christmas. She also signed on to two more movies for the streamer, Irish Wish (which premiered March 15) and the upcoming Our Little Secret.

To combat the ominous atmosphere of the Ides of March, Netflix has another Lindsay Lohan film, “Irish Wish,” which is now streaming. The follow-up to “Falling for Christmas” in Lohan’s deal with the streamer to make two films, “Irish Wish” focuses on love, luck and a little bit of magic in the rom-com that arrives right before Saint Patrick’s Day.
Lohan portrays a smart book editor, except when it comes to matters of her heart. It takes a wish granted by a mystical woman out in the beautiful Irish countryside to get Maddie to realize that what she hopes and dreams for might not be what she wants or should want in life.
Featuring music from Lohan’s younger sister, Aliana, and a guest appearance from her brother, Dokota, the cast is stacked with other familiar faces as well. We’ve rounded up the “Irish Wish” cast and...

Early-aughts teen queen Lindsay Lohan is having a comeback moment, and her latest Netflix romance is here. The “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday” star previously teamed with the streamer on the hit holiday romance “Falling for Christmas.” Now, she’s back — along with director Janeen Damian — for the spring fling, “Irish Wish.”
Lohan stars as book editor Maddie who’s head over heels for the author she works with, Paul (Alexander Vlahos), until he falls in love with her best friend (Elizabeth Tan). Putting her feelings aside, Maddie travels to Ireland for their wedding, where sparks fly with a charismatic photographer (Ed Speleers) until an accidental wish turns her life upside down. She wakes up engaged to Paul and racing toward a walk down the aisle she’s not sure she wants anymore.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride — unless, of course, your best friend gets engaged to the love of your life, you make a spontaneous wish for true love, and then magically wake up as the bride-to-be. That’s the pickle in which Lindsay Lohan finds herself in the upcoming romantic comedy Irish Wish.
Directed by Janeen Damian (Falling for Christmas), produced by Brad Krevoy and Michael Damian, and written by Kirsten Hansen, Irish Wish follows shy book editor Maddie Kelly (Lohan) on a supernatural, romantic journey of self-discovery. “She’s been ghostwriting for the writer she works for and she’s hopelessly in love with him, and she’s expecting him to love her back,” Lohan tells Tudum. But when reciprocation proves elusive, she takes matters into her own hands — only to find that romantic fantasies don’t always hold up to the harsh light of reality.

Irish Wish marks Lindsay Lohan’s second romantic comedy with Netflix. Signed to a multi-picture deal, she’ll have at least one more, Our Little Secret, expected later this year. The first film, Falling For Christmas, had some charm simply for being set during Christmas. But it played it so safe. It didn’t take any chances, and seemed hesitant to go for anything fun. Unfortunately, Irish Wish closely follows suit.
Irish Wish Plot
Lohan plays Maddie, an book editor. She has recently finished working on a book with charming author Paul Kennedy (Alexander Vlahos). Over their time working together, Maddie has fallen in love with Paul, but has not been able to muster the courage to tell him. On the night of the book release, she decides to go for it. But before she can, Paul meets and hits it off with Maddie’s friend Emma (Elizabeth Tan). It...

The star’s creep back to mainstream movies needs expediting with another junky Netflix offering that feels beneath her talent
The curse of auburn-haired American women heading to Ireland for terrible magic-themed romcoms continues, 14 years after Amy Adams took an unfortunate vacation in the detestable Leap Year (a film that even her co-star Matthew Goode generously referred to as “turgid” within weeks of its release). There’s less at stake here – Adams was a two-time Oscar nominee leading her first romantic comedy – but we’re left in a similarly unremarkable place, a persuasive tourism ad masquerading as a real movie.
That might have sounded like a big enough get for star Lindsay Lohan a few years ago, when she was still trying to break her way out of Hollywood jail. A mixture of bad film choices, bad life decisions and bad behaviour left her an uninsurable pariah, even if she...

"I am not the one who is getting married! She is!" Netflix has unveiled a fun trailer for a romantic comedy called Irish Wish, the next Lindsay Lohan romcom from the streaming studio after Falling for Christmas in 2022. When the love of Maddie's life gets engaged to her best friend, she puts her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland. Actor Ed Speleers explains: "This world, this sphere of filmmaking comes very naturally for [Lindsay Lohan]. She has a great approach to the work and is very much in tune with her comedic bones. This was my first out and out rom-com, and to team up with Lindsay and film in the stunning Republic of Ireland felt like the perfect way to venture into this genre." Lindsay Lohan stars with Ed Speleers, Alexander Vlahos, Ayesha Curry, Elizabeth Tan, Jacinta Mulcahy, and Jane Seymour. Once again, it looks like some Hallmark Channel rubbish,...

The streaming service unveiled the official trailer this week, and it looks like a marked improvement on her previous effort, Falling for Christmas.

Fanatic Feed: Razzie Nominations Revealed, Constellation, Ripley, Apples Never Fall All Get Trailers
It's a big day for highly anticipated new streaming series, two of which just released their first trailers.
First, we have Constellation, the AppleTV sci-fi thriller starring Noomi Rapace and Jonathan Banks.
Rapace plays an astronaut who returns to Earth after a stint on a space station and finds that her life has changed in a number of small, subtle ways.
In his best world-weary "go home, Walter" voice, Banks explains that astronauts have a tendency to become "unstuck" after spending too much time in space.
What does that mean, exactly?
Well, we guess we'll have to watch the spacy drama unfold to find out!
It's tough to discern much about the plot from the trailer, but it looks like the series will enter supernatural horror territory as it progresses.
There's some weirdness involving Rapace's daughter, and the trailer delivers some genuinely spine-tingling creepy kid moments.
It also has lots...

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.

Lindsay Lohan was fetch long before fetch was a thing. So, it should come as no surprise that Paramount paid the actor handsomely to cameo in the new “Mean Girls.”

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a challenge at all.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” dominated Netflix’s overall leaderboard in its debut week, when it drew 20.1 million views. The unscripted competition series picked up where the I.P. left off in 2021, bumping Part 1 of “The Crown’s” sixth season to second place (8.8 million views) for the week of November 20, 2023.
“Squid Game: The Challenge,” filmed in the UK, is an English-language series; Og “Squid Game” was a Korean-language series dubbed into local languages. As such, the scripted show technically rests atop Netflix’s “Non-English” list, though it blows away all the English-language stuff anyway.
“The Challenge” was so big it brought “Squid Game” back to the Global Top 10 for non-english series — at no. 6 with 1.6 million views — its 21st appearance. The scripted show hadn’t made the list since the week ending June 19, 2022. The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend sure helped the streams pile up.

Audiences have a renewed interest in Squid Game, thanks to the release of Netflix’s reality competition series based on the hit Korean series.
Squid Game: The Challenge debuted at No. 1 among the streamer’s English-language TV list for the week of November 20 to 26, with 20.1M views. That’s quite a big showing for a TV series in its first week, especially with only five episodes available. The remaining episodes are expected to roll out over the next two weeks.
The spinoff also boosted Squid Game back onto the Non-English TV list, where it landed at No. 6 with 1.6M views. Squid Game is currently Netflix’s most popular series of all time.
In second place on the English-language list was Part 1 of The Crown Season 6. The first four episodes managed 8.8M views in their first full week on Netflix after debuting on the streamer on November 16. The remaining episodes will...

Director Mary Lambert delivers yuletide warmth and heartfelt cheer to Netflix subscribers with “Best. Christmas. Ever!” The story centered on two women rediscovering their strength and sparkle by mending their fractured friendship finds the correct balance of cynical and saccharine without upsetting the scale. The streamer’s practically patented brand of holiday hijinks is amped up to a ridiculous degree as the hyperbolic title would suggest. Even so, its absurdist lunacy acts as a Trojan Horse containing genuinely meaningful sentiments on forgiveness, happiness and bittersweet sorrows — universalities people tend to reflect on as their year comes to a close.
Charlotte Sanders (Heather Graham) dreads Christmastime because it means her former college bestie Jackie Jennings’ (Brandy Norwood) annual newsletter is on its way. It’s filled with obnoxious lingo and humblebrags about the Jennings family’s successes, and Charlotte can’t help but feel inferior, unfavorably comparing it to her own harried life as a wife,...

With meet-cutes and redemption all round, a tame baddie and a dog called Mr Jingles, this British micro-budget tale brings fresh love to tired tropes
If you’ve ever wondered what a Hallmark Christmas movie would look like if you got rid of the former Disney child stars, glossy production locations and Dolly Parton showing up at the end to sing a festive ballad, here we have an answer. This is a British micro-budget answer to holiday themed films such as Falling for Christmas, A Cozy Christmas Inn or A Christmas Cookie Catastrophe – all of which emerged in the last year.
The film-makers of this one clearly know the template like the backs of their hands, with the following Christmas romcom tropes present and correct: a wholesome but struggling business enterprise (see title), a trip back home for Christmas (see title), the magic of small communities compared with big cities...

Lindsay Lohan is in her comeback era, and longtime fans couldn't be happier to see her return to the screen and spotlight. But they're also thrilled to watch the former child star find love with husband Bader Shammas - and especially because the two recently became parents.
After announcing the couple's marriage back in July 2022, Lohan revealed on March 14, 2023, that they were expecting their first child together. The news came a few months after the premiere of the actor's latest movie, Netflix's holiday flick "Falling For Christmas," which debuted in November. She's also set to star in another rom-com soon, titled "Irish Wish."
The beloved rom-com genre helped launch Lohan to stardom in the '90s and early 2000s, but by the end of the decade and well into the 2010s, she took a hiatus from acting, retreated from the spotlight, and kept her personal life private.

Late last year, Jamie Lee Curtis reportedly was interested in revisiting the 2003 body swap comedy remake she had made with then-rising star Lindsay Lohan, Freaky Friday. The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that it is officially in the works at the House of Mouse. Now that Disney is finding opportunities to reboot or give sequels to nostalgic projects thanks to Disney+ with projects like The Mighty Ducks series and the Hocus Pocus sequel, and hot off of Jamie Lee Curtis’ Oscar win, it seemed like a perfect time to cash in on a follow-up.
In the 2003 remake, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan played a mother and daughter who were constantly at odds with each other. A time came when they simultaneously wished the other could experience life in their shoes when magic fortune cookies made it come true. The next morning, they wake up in each other’s bodies.

A Freaky Friday sequel is officially in the works at Disney with both Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis set to return, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
No plot details for the film have been shared, but Elyse Hollander is writing the script. Released in 2003, Freaky Friday was already a remake; it originated as a Mary Rodgers novel in 1972, and its first film adaptation followed in 1976. But the Lohan-Curtis version — written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon and directed by Mark Waters — has become a fan favorite thanks to, among many other things, Lohan’s punky Anna, her band Pink Slip, and an incredible scene in which Curtis and Chad Michael Murray sing Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.” It grossed over $160 million worldwide.
Lohan and Curtis have long been willing to reprise their roles in the film, which sees a mother and daughter switch bodies and learn to accept their differences.

Is the entertainment landscape currently overrun with reboots, sequels, requels, and spinoffs? Yes. Do I often complain about the lack of funding and access granted to original storytelling? Yes. Am I completely selling out my moral code to scream at the top of my lungs with excitement regarding the news that Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reuniting for a sequel to "Freaky Friday?" You BET Your Sweet Bippy, I Am!
If you aren't a millennial teen girl or someone with enough good taste to enjoy seminal millennial teen girl movies, 2003's "Freaky Friday" is the third (but certainly not the last) adaptation of Mary Rodgers's 1972 novel of the same name, where a mother and daughter magically swap bodies and must walk a mile in each others' shoes to better understand one another and develop empathy for their unique struggles. Lohan and Curtis are expected to reprise their roles as a mother and daughter who wake up one Friday and find they have swapped bodies. Elyse Hollander is penning the script to the sequel.

Rachael Leigh Cook has done all that: She’s been a teen breakout star in an iconic high school comedy (“She’s All That”), transitioned to cringe sponsored movies (“Spirit Halloween”), and made the leap to Hallmark Christmas queen (“Tis the Season to Be Merry”). Now, she’s deftly parlayed her everywoman likability into the sweet made-for-Netflix movie “A Tourist’s Guide for Love.”
Yes, “made-for-Netflix” is a category all on its own. While “The Irishman” is considered to be a Netflix Original, “made-for-Netflix” separates the mass-produced movies like the nearly-perfect “Falling for Christmas” and calming background noise of “Murder Mystery 2” from the real Oscar contenders. It’s a sliding scale of quality under the streaming titan’s content umbrella, and Cook’s latest film, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” feels like an adaptation of a sweet viral BookTok romance novel — in the best way possible.

Despite Lindsay Lohan’s talents, her career has certainly seen its share of ups and downs, from critically praised and panned films to highly publicized feuds with relatives. But with her recent re-emergence on the silver screen, it’s worth taking a second look at her career to date. One of her more notable movies, The Canyons, was panned for its plot but praised for her performance. It also involved Lohan making an interesting request of the crew.

It’s no mystery what audiences were watching on Netflix over the holiday weekend.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery made its way to the top of Netflix’s English-language film chart for the week of December 19 to December 25, after debuting on the streamer two days before Christmas. Rian Johnson‘s comedy sequel notched 82.1M hours viewed in those two days, which Netflix says equates to about 35M households.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio fell to No. 3, as The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari took second place with 25.1M hours viewed. Viewers were certainly in the holiday spirit, as the list was rounded out by mostly Christmas films including How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Bad Moms Christmas, and Falling For Christmas.
As for the TV side of things, Emily in Paris Season 3 debuted on December 21 and has collected 117.6M hours viewed, making it No. 2 on the U.S. English-language chart.

Did Edward Norton base his character in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Elon Musk? Probably.
If you’ve read any entertainment news outlet in the past six months, you’ll know two things about the film, which came out on Netflix on 23 December: Daniel Craig’s Southern sleuth is confirmed queer (but Craig himself doesn’t “want to make a song and dance about it”) and Edward Norton’s character is very probably, most likely, almost definitely based on Elon Musk.
The film stars Norton as Miles Bron, a billionaire tech bro CEO. Once a year, he invites his friends – a smug gaggle of people described as “disruptors” if only by themselves – for a lavish weekend away. These “disruptors” include a men’s rights activist and online celebrity Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) and a racist model-turned-influencer (Kate Hudson). Bron has just become a multitrillionaire through his stake in Alpha,...
