Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Nicole Kidman may find that even heartbreak feels good in a movie theater, but the Oscar-winning actress is not going to find herself directing one of those films for the silver screen.
Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter while being honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award that she is aware of the fact that she “would be a terrible director” — in part due to her indecisiveness. Kidman has produced a slew of TV series such as “Big Little Lies,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “The Undoing,” “Love & Death,” “Special Ops: Lioness,” and “Expats” through her Blossom Films banner. She’s pretty good at that.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman said. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going,...

When Nicole Kidman was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large portion of her speech thanking the directors whom she’s worked with throughout the years. The respect for the job, though, doesn’t she mean has any desire to step behind the camera herself.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties much more align with her interests. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going, ‘I love this script,’ or seeing somebody and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, how do I support them?’ And they maybe have done nothing [before], but I want to get behind them.

“True Detective” season four, officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” has returned the HBO crime series to its former glories after seasons two and three disappointed. This entry follows Jodie Foster as a police chief investigating the vanishing of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
One of many things, along with the eerie town and Lovecraftian seasoning, that makes this series so excellent is its cast. Two-time Oscar-winner Foster is joined by a trio of other veterans — Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and John Hawkes — plus a pair of newcomers: former boxer Kali Reis and rising star Finn Bennett. Bennett plays police Officer Peter Prior, the son of Hawkes’ Captain Prior, and he turns in a nuanced, memorable performance. Critics have agreed, too, he makes the strongest impression amongst the series’ supporting cast.
Caryn James (BBC) opined: ‘Bennett is vivid and convincing as Peter Prior, a smart...

Elizabeth Olsen (Love & Death) and Charles Melton (May December) are set to star in Love Child, the first new movie from Todd Solondz in eight years.
Love Child follows Misty, a woman stuck in a loveless marriage to a brutish husband. “Junior, her precocious 11-year-old is her only consolation,” reads the description. “When Easy, a handsome vagabond stranger, appears, Junior hatches a plan to get rid of his father so that his mother can marry him instead. But things end up backfiring, so Junior comes up with yet another plan, this one even more devious, and with more disastrous—and unexpected—consequences.” The film has been in the works for some time, with Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell once attached to the project back in 2021.

Ali Wong took home the Golden Globe tonight for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made For Television for Beef. It was her first nomination and her first win.
Wong had a long walk to the stage that was nearly as long as her brief acceptance speech. Keeping it short and sweet, the actress thanked co-star Steven Yeun, show creator Lee Sung Jin and her husband. (Yeun went on to win in his category shortly after Wong.)
The very tight race in the category also included Riley Keough for Daisy Jones & the Six, Brie Larson for Lessons in Chemistry, Elizabeth Olsen for Love & Death, Juno Temple for Fargo and Rachel Weisz for Dead Ringers.
The Golden Globes were held at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, with Jo Koy hosting the ceremony. See a full list of winners here.

This year, Golden Globes voters bestowed nominations upon more than 100 individual film and TV creatives, including actors, directors, writers, musicians, and even comedians. Most of those who appear on the ballot were widely expected to show up there, but some either slid through without much notice or have not received as much personal publicity as their projects. In order to make sure you didn’t miss any notable inclusions, take a read through our comprehensive breakdown of the year’s undersung contenders.

The 2024 Critics Choice TV Awards nominations were revealed on Tuesday, December 5 with Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” leading the pack with six mentions, including its first for Best Drama Series. On Friday, June 13, 1980, the devout and do-gooding Candy Montgomery caused a stir in her Dallas community when she was arrested for killing her friend Betty Gore with 41 ax blows. When put on trial, Candy claimed that she killed Betty in self-defense. What was especially scandalous was that this argument worked in court, and Candy was acquitted. Now, over 40 years later, the case has been revisited on the small screen, though not in your traditional true-crime documentary fashion.
In the golden age of the true-crime era, it was only a matter of time until this shocking story made it to the small screen in serialized drama form. Hulu stepped up to the task first in 2022 with "Candy," a five-episode limited series that stars Jessica Biel in the titular role. Then, Max followed suit in April by taking on the story with the true-crime miniseries "Love & Death," which stars Elizabeth Olsen as the central character.

If you always fall for sweet friends-to-lovers romances, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons's love story will make your heart melt. During a 2017 appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," the "Spider-Man" actor turned beet red when asked about her "Fargo" costar Plemons, who had secretly gotten down on one knee to propose several months before. "[We] became really good friends first working together, then got together after," Dunst giddily told Fallon. She said that after spending so much time on set together, she realized, "I really love this person" and "I love hanging out with him."

It’s not uncommon for gigantic movie franchises and very popular television shows to make a star out of actors who were rather unknown before getting their roles in those franchises. However, as popularity increases, it’s also not uncommon for an actor to try new things in their careers since they don’t want to be associated only with that one role that turned them into stars.
Dave Bautista is one of the examples. After playing the role of Drax for the last time in this year’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ the former wrestler-turned-actor decided to focus on other roles because he said he doesn’t want Drax to be his only legacy. And now, it looks like Elizabeth Olsen, who is best known for playing Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, feels the same way.

Elizabeth Olsen made her Marvel debut as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in 2013’s “Captain America and the Winter Soldier”.
Since then, she’s played the character in numerous other Marvel projects, including “Aveengers: Age of Ultron”, “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Avengers: Endgame”, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, and the Disney+ series “WandaVision”.

After working for the past several years in the Marvel universe, Elizabeth Olsen is ready to explore other roles. Olsen filmed WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness back-to-back, playing Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. In a pre-strike interview with Times of London, Olsen explained that is why she was drawn to the role of Candy Montgomery in Max’s Love and Death.
“I’m trying to figure out… Because, specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel,” Olsen said. “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that’s something that I need.

Season 2 of “The Afterparty” may not be eligible at the Emmys until next year, but it could very well help one of its cast members prevail for a completely different show at the 2023 awards (that will be held in 2024).

Whenever she finds herself in a room surrounded by TV’s biggest stars, Rhea Seehorn is always looking for Bob Odenkirk. “He’s my partner in crime,” the Better Call Saul star says of her co-star. This awards season will likely be no different, as Seehorn, Odenkirk and the AMC series are all nominated once again for Emmy Awards.
For the second year in a row, Seehorn scored a nom for her performance as Kim Wexler, a role she’s played over six seasons and seven years. But this time marks Seehorn’s last outing as the character, as the series closed with its final season in August 2022.
Coming off last year’s nomination, Seehorn isn’t any less excited for the mayhem to come — eventually, as the ceremony itself has been pushed to Jan. 15, 2024: “I am an eternally not-jaded person,” she says, adding that she intends to deploy...

How will this week’s decision of the TV Academy to delay the 75th Emmys from Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, until Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, due to the ongoing writers and actors strikes, impact the already-crowded fall awards season?
On one level, it shouldn’t at all, given that the dates for final Emmys voting are not being impacted by the postponement of the telecast — TV Academy members will be casting their ballots between August 17 and August 28, as was always the plan — meaning that Emmys campaigning will be long over.
But at the same time, the Emmys, now taking place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, could become a spot where Oscar contenders will want to be seen, given that the Emmys telecast will now fall within the Oscar nomination voting window of Jan. 11 through Jan. 16, with SAG Awards final voting starting shortly thereafter on Jan. 17.

Ray Liotta’s daughter Karsen has reacted to her late dad’s Emmy nomination.
Ray — who passed away on May 26, 2022 — was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie category for his role in the Apple TV+ series “Black Bird”.
Ray is up against his “Black Bird” co-star Paul Walter Hauser, Murray Bartlett (“Welcome To Chippendales”), Richard Jenkins (“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Joseph Lee (“Beef”), Young Mazino (“Beef”) and Jesse Plemons (“Love & Death”) for the gong.
Karsen said in a statement: “I am so grateful to the members of the Television Academy for honouring my Dad with this nomination,” the Daily Mail reported.
“He was so incredibly proud of his performance in ‘Black Bird’, and it would mean the world to him to be nominated alongside Taron and Paul,” she added, referencing Taron Egerton’s Best Actor in a...

Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

As expected, it was a good day for Casey Bloys. The chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content was celebrating his outlet(s)’ 127 Emmy nominations — not a record for the company, but nonetheless marking a dominant year. Whereas the HBO vs. Netflix horse race has been a headline in past Emmy years, it wasn’t much of a contest this year, as Bloys’ team outplayed the competition by 24 nods (with Netflix picking up a still-impressive 103).
According to HBO, it was the 21st time that HBO had led the Emmy nomination tally. That haul included 27 nominations for outgoing drama “Succession,” which landed three nominations in the lead drama actor category (a first). And in picking up four drama nominations, HBO pulled off something that had only been done twice before, by CBS in 1973 and NBC in 1992.

HBO is once again the leader among Emmy nominations — though it’s a little closer than it was a year ago.
The premium cable outlet and sibling streamer Max gathered 127 nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards on Wednesday. That’s 13 fewer nods than the two platforms combined to receive in 2022.
HBO and Max’s total is two dozen more than second-place Netflix, which had 103 nominations. Apple TV+ finished third with 50 nominations, Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video got 42 each, and Disney+ has 40. (There’s a bit of fuzziness with the Hulu numbers, as the Television Academy counted shows like The Bear and Fleishman Is in Trouble under FX, which produced them, even though they streamed solely on Hulu. Disney says Hulu has 64 total nominations rather than 42 as listed by the Academy, with the FX/Hulu shows accounting for the discrepancy.)

On one level, the biggest snub for this year’s Emmy nominations is that the looming actors strike has robbed this day of its usual joy. The writers strike, in effect since early May, has already severely curtailed celebrating the best and brightest of the 2022-23 TV season. And now, with SAG-AFTRA almost certainly joining the WGA on the picket line in a matter of hours, there’s an air of doom over what should be a happy event.
On another, less existential level, what does Harrison Ford have to do to get an Emmy nomination?! The Emmys’ diamond anniversary brought widely expected nominations for previous Emmy favorites like “Succession,” “The White Lotus,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso.” A new shift in rules that capped the number of names voters could submit per category was expected to keep those shows from total domination of the acting categories — but they all...

After winning last year’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor Emmy for “The White Lotus,” Murray Bartlett now officially has a chance to become the category’s first back-to-back champion by being honored for Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales.” He will, however, have to fend off strong frontrunner Paul Walter Hauser, who has already collected Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards for Apple TV+’s “Black Bird.” Scroll through our photo gallery to learn more about all seven of this year’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor nominees and be sure to finalize your Emmy predictions by September 18.
Bartlett is one of several multi-nominated actors on this year’s Emmy ballot, as he also nabbed a Best Drama Guest Actor bid for “The Last of Us.” One of his supporting challengers, posthumous contender Ray Liotta (“Black Bird”), won the same guest award for “ER” in 2005.
