'Snow In The Desert (2021)' is easily the best episode of 'Love, Death & Robots (2019-)' season 2. It's the sort of thing that could be expanded into a full feature; its interesting world, concepts, characters and themes make for an experience that leaves you wanting more, even though its story is capped off extremely well. It tells the tale of an albino with an accelerated rate of regeneration who must live his life with a massive bounty on his head. One day, he comes across someone who doesn't seek money; she seeks his company. The plot itself is, perhaps, a little thin, but the piece is character-driven and focuses on its enigmatic eponymous hero more than anything else. His backstory is explored just enough to make him relatable, a quietly tragic figure who easily commands your attention. The fact that he can regrow limbs is only part of what makes him intriguing. He's developed subtly but distinctly, which works surprisingly well given the short format. His companion, too, is given quite a bit of depth despite the small emotive bandwidth that both parties receive. On top of this excellent characterisation is an affecting atmosphere and several excellent action scenes, the latter of which are truly well-crafted. The set-pieces are fast, brutal and exciting, brought to life with crystal-clear choreography (almost definitely a result of motion capture) and beautiful rendering. The entire affair is absolutely gorgeous, too; at times, it literally looks photo-real. There's no issue with the uncanny valley here, even in the more emotional or dialogue-heavy moments (some of which are cleverly obscured to prevent such problems), and that's a feat in and of itself. As a whole, this is a compelling and enjoyable short film. It's thematically rich, atmospheric and, when it needs to be, energetic. 8/10.
