Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. If you're anything like me, you've likely caught bits and pieces of several movies, potentially out of order, when the little ones in your life decided to watch (and rewatch ... and rewatch) them. After a weekend with the Oscars sharing the spotlight with the best one-two punch at the box office since July, the VOD and Netflix current home viewing charts lag in importance. “Argylle” (Universal) had a good launch on PVOD and “Damsel,” the kind of far-removed from awards thoughts Netflix original film, clicked with users immediately. Both bits of news are so below the radar that they have little relevance to how things stand in the industry.
“Argylle” — which Apple reportedly acquired for $200 million from “Kingsman” creator Matthew Vaughn and then released theatrically through Universal (with a gross of under $45 million) — came out on PVOD (for $19.99 rental) two weeks earlier than Apple’s earlier “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” And significantly, in doing so, delayed when their streaming subscribers gain access to it.

But the results for the first week with both available show that Will Gluck’s Australian-set rom-com is doing much better at home than the musical remake of the hit 2004 high school clique satire.
Meanwhile, little is more normal than a new original Tyler Perry film placing immediately at #1 on Netflix. “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland as an attorney who takes on a tough murder defense to enhance her chances at partnership at her firm, is the hyphenate’s first film since 2022 and third consecutive production for the streamer.

Music and movies will take turns being Kid Cudi’s main creative priority. The musician announced on Friday that his next studio album is nearly complete, but he isn’t looking to release it until 2026. His latest release, the long-delayed Insano, arrived last month, which makes 2025 a movie year in his alternating schedule.
“My next album is already about 80% done, and it’ll be out in 2026. As always, we’re takin it someplace new,” Cudi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Just wanted to let yall know, expect an album from...

Everyone thinks of themselves as an expert in music, so every year complaints are voiced about the Oscar nominees for song and score. This year, more than most, insiders are venting about the choices and the process by which they’re made.
Variety surveyed multiple interested observers, including studio executives, music-branch members, publicists and consultants; and while no one agreed on possible solutions to the issues raised, their views and opinions are instructive.
A total of 390 members in the music branch are eligible to vote. But, sources say, only about half of them actually vote for the nominees, and less than one-quarter are said to be choosing the 15-title shortlists from which the final five in each category are chosen.

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

“Wonka” reigns again on the VOD charts, but the week’s real star is Amazon/MGM’s “American Fiction.” Driven by its five Oscar nominations and continued success at the box office, it reached #2 at Apple TV/iTunes on Saturday and is currently #4. Not bad for a racial satire that’s grossed $17 million to date.
It suggests the film will earn substantially more than its theatrical take, reflecting smart strategy: While Amazon makes movies for streaming, it recognizes (like Apple) the value of making VOD its first at-home platform. It’s also a good argument that the Netflix Mo of deemphasizing theatrical and skipping VOD misses opportunities to get awards and audience traction.
“Oppenheimer” (Universal) repeats as #2 on two charts, though its reduced price keeps it from making Vudu revenue-driven list. Christopher Nolan’s Oscar frontrunner has been the strongest film since its home-viewing debut three months ago, now sustained by Oscar nomination-leading total.

*Nsync has returned to the scene in more ways than one. In September 2023, the beloved boy band presented the Best Pop award to Taylor Swift at the VMAs — 10 years after the five men last gathered for a public appearance.
Then, in November 2023, *Nsync walked the purple carpet to celebrate the premiere of Trolls Band Together. They recorded “Better Place” for the animated musical comedy’s soundtrack.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

More new *Nsync music may be coming in the near future.
While making an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday, Justin Timberlake teased that the boy band’s recent reunion for the single “Better Place” — their first song together in over two decades — for the film Trolls Band Together, may not be the only new tune to be released by the group.
“We’ve been in the studio, so there may be a little something in the future, too,” he told host Kelly Clarkson.
Timberlake’s tease came as he recalled “growing up in the industry and getting access to so much in the studio,” which resulted in him becoming what he described as a “studio rat.” He added, “I just loved being in there and I loved the creative process. And also as it pertains to harmonies, I spent some time with four other guys doing a lot of harmonies.

Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

Justin Timberlake released his new single “Selfish” on January 25. It’s the lead single from his forthcoming album “Everything I Thought It Was,” which is his first new collection since “Man of the Woods” six years ago. Do you think the song sounds like a potential Grammy winner for the artist after so much time away? Watch the official music video above.
Timberlake is a 10-time Grammy winner across his career, but he only received one nomination for his “Man of the Woods” era: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for his Chris Stapleton-assisted top-10 hit single “Say Something.” The last time he won an award from the Recording Academy was Best Visual Media Song for “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from “Trolls,” a prize he shared with co-writers Max Martin and Shellback.

Pharrell Williams has come a long way from producing music as part of the Neptunes and as part of the rap/rock band N.E.R.D. Williams went on to do some of the most catchy, ear-wormy pop hits that radio and television would play ad nauseam. Pharrell would also break through into movies as he composed music for such films as the Despicable Me movies, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Hidden Figures. Additionally, his pop hits would be all over countless trailers and be featured in movies like Trolls Band Together and Sing 2.
Recently, Pharrell took to his Instagram to announce that his life story will be told in Lego form in a film from Focus Features, titled Piece by Piece. The film is due to hit theaters on October 11. Comcast saw fourth-quarter profit surge by 7.8% as the cable giant increased the number of businesses using its communications services, its Peacock streaming hub added 3 million subscribers and its theme parks saw robust activity.
“Our unique and complementary capabilities will enable us to capitalize on the many opportunities ahead,” said Brian Roberts, the company’s chairman. Comcast is, like its rivals, navigating in a difficult period for media companies as one-time TV viewers migrate to streaming video, reducing interest in traditional linear entertainment services and traditional cable.
The Philadelphia owner of NBCUniversal said net income rose 7.8% to $3.26 billion, or 81 cents a share, compared with $3.02 billion, or 70 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue increased 2.3% compared with the prior-year period.
The company eked out positive results despite losing 389,000 video subscribers and seeing a 6.9% decline in U.S. advertising at NBCUniversal.

Peacock, the streaming service of Comcast’s entertainment unit NBCUniversal, grew its fourth-quarter revenue by 57 percent to surpass $1 billion for a quarter for the first time, while narrowing its loss. The streamer ended 2023 with 31 million paying subscribers, the media, entertainment and technology giant disclosed Thursday.
Comcast president Mike Cavanagh said at an investor conference in early December that Peacock had reached 30 million subs. It ended September with 28 million subscribers after adding 4 million during the third quarter. That meant a gain of around 3 million in the final quarter of 2023.
Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong told analysts during a morning call that the 3 million new Peacock subscribers during the latest financial quarter came in part from viewers drawn to NFL and Big Ten football games, without specifying actual numbers. NBCU’s loss related to Peacock amounted to $825 million in the fourth quarter, compared with a year-ago loss of $978 million on revenue of $660 million.

Peacock lost $825 million in the final three months of 2023 while adding 3 million subscribers. The NBCUniversal streaming service ended December with 31 million subs.
The streamer passed $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time ever, Comcast’s Q4 earnings report on Thursday revealed. Peacock is the fastest-growing streaming service in the U.S.
Peacock had lost $978 million in Q4 of 2022. The streaming platform lost $565 million in 2023’s summer quarter, an improvement over prior quarters.
There was a big bright spot for the streamer in early 2024. With its controversial, exclusive AFC Wildcard NFL playoff game, Peacock set a new record for the largest streaming-signups moment in history (or at least since Antenna began measuring in 2019). Over a three-day period (defined by Antenna as a “moment”), Peacock onboarded 2.8 million subscribers. That’s the most they’ve seen in 72 hours.
*Nsync is back!
The guys – Justin Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, and Jc Chasez – first formed the boy band in 1995 and rose to massive success in 1998 when they dropped their debut American single, “I Want You Back.”
In 2002 after seven years together, the guys of *Nsync decided to part ways so that they could focus on their own solo projects.
In September 2023, the guys reunited for the song “Better Place” – their first new song together in 20 years – from the soundtrack to the upcoming movie Trolls Band Together, which features Justin as Branch.
Now that they’re working together again, we’ve compiled a list of the net worths of each of the *Nsync members and ranked their net worth from lowest to highest.

The importance of revenue earned by studios from PVOD rentals reasserts itself with news that, as of Tuesday, all but two of the wide films released from either December 22 or December 25 will have home availability. That’s one month or less after their theatrical releases.
Top holiday grosser “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which opened a week earlier, sleeper rom-com hit “Anyone but You” (Sony), and “The Iron Claw” remain theater-exclusive. Otherwise, the rush for home gold has taken over.
Three of these titles — “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (WB), “Migration” (Universal), and “Ferrari” (Neon) debut on Tuesday. They will join “The Color Purple” (WB) and “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM), both of which came out last week, 22 days after release.
The results for the week actually showed that four earlier films scored better overall during the week. “Purple” did best at Vudu (#4), but only #8 at Apple TV and #10 at Google Play.

Justin Timberlake will return to “Saturday Night Live” in the wake of backlash following ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ shocking memoir “The Woman in Me.”
In the memoir, Spears alleged Timberlake encouraged her to have an abortion, among other revelations about their relationship. Spears also recounted a cringe encounter between Timberlake and Ginuwine; the audiobook narration of the exchange went viral thanks to Oscar winner Michelle Williams’ accent impersonating Timberlake. (Smart money is on Timberlake appearing in a sketch about this in some form.)
The Emmy and Grammy-winning musician will appear in the January 27 episode of “Saturday Night Live” with Dakota Johnson hosting. Johnson will be promoting her upcoming superhero film “Madame Web.”
In 2023, Timberlake reunited with *Nsync band members for animated film “Trolls Band Together.” Timberlake also recently appeared in Benicio Del Toro’s “Reptile.”
The “Social Network” star will take the “SNL” stage for his fifth solo musical guest appearance.

Dakota Johnson is set to host “SNL” for the second time on Jan. 27 where she’ll be accompanied by Justin Timberlake as the musical guest.
Johnson stars as the titular character in “Madame Web,” in theaters Feb. 14. She plays Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic whose psychic abilities allow her to see into the future and the interconnected spider world. She stars alongside “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney. Johnson is also known for her 2015 starring role of “Anastasia Steele” in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the film adaptation of the best-selling erotic novel, “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
A member of the show’s famous “Five-Timers Club,” Timberlake is no stranger to the “SNL” stage as this serves as his fifth time taking the “Saturday Night Live” stage as a solo musical act. Fresh off of his role on 2023’s “Trolls Band Together” film, the Emmy and Grammy Award winner is currently preparing for...

In the film, Janney will play a woman whose husband has passed away. With a funeral to plan and grieving to be done, she reaches out to her estranged son. When “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) opened on Christmas Day, it grossed over $18 million, fueled by marketing campaign that focused on group sales to attract its core audiene. Its total was $40 above what “Les Miserables” did on December 25, 2012 (its opening day) before it grossed nearly $150 million in the U.S./Canada.
Unfortunately for the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel (and Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie), the operation was a success but the patient did less well. Through three weeks of play, despite an A Cinemascore suggesting strong audience response, it has grossed only $58 million, barely three times its opening day. The recent weekend, its third, took in under $2 million after losing almost two-thirds of its theaters.
On Tuesday, after 22 days in theaters, it will become the first holiday release to reach home audiences on PVOD (at $19.99 to rent). Perhaps it can find greater success there.
