Dev Patel's directorial debut "Monkey Man" is due in theaters on April 5, and reviews so far have been largely positive. /Film's own Jacob Hall praised the film for its efficient brutality, keen at Patel's abilities to wallow in emotions as he is capably murdering foes. Patel plays a character known only as "Kid," who seeks to murder a cadre of local bad guys as revenge for the death of his mother. In so doing, he unwittingly becomes a legendary hero for the locals, all beset by the same cadre of bad guys.
"Monkey Man" has been compared to "John Wick" in both its action brutality and lean premise. Patel also co-wrote the screenplay, produced the film, and likely did the catering as well, given his devotion to the project. If nothing else, "Monkey Man" seems to be Patel's proof to studios that he can handle major action projects.

[Editor’s note: This article includes some light spoilers for Prime Video’s “Upgraded.”]
If there’s one thing that’s true about art and life: Nothing is ever really free. This goes double for art that shows up in film and TV. Each piece either needs to be created purposefully for a project by the art team or licensed from the artist or estate that holds the digital/image reproduction rights to it — unless you want a tattoo artist suing you for copyright infringement for putting an actual Mike Tyson tattoo on Ed Helms’ face.
We take it for granted, but everything that we see on screen is intentional. All the art must either be created by a project’s art team or licensed, whether that be old photographs on a desk, posters on a bedroom wall, graffiti on the side of a building, or, in the case of Carlson Young’s new film, “Upgraded,” multiple galleries full of modern art. If a piece isn’t purpose-made,...

Mike Tyson is set to play himself in “Bunny-Man,” an offbeat superhero movie that is being shot in Italy.
The former heavyweight boxing champion on Tuesday attended a press conference held in the Northern city of Turin with Italian producer Andrea Iervolino and writer Enrico Remmert to announce “Bunny-Man,” which will be entirely shot in Turin.
Iervolino, whose production credits include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Johnny Depp-starrer “Waiting for the Barbarians” and “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend,” is producing the film via his TaTaTu shingle.
“Bunny-Man” involves a multimillionaire superhero who strikes against evil forces in anonymity wearing a rabbit mask, according to a provided synopsis. He is driven by the desire to avenge his sister who committed suicide after suffering a violent act, images of which wound up on the internet.

Hollywood star Bradley Cooper is open to reprising his role as Phil in the fourth installment of the ‘Hangover’ film series. On a recent episode of ‘The New Yorker Radio Hour’ podcast, Cooper spoke to host David Remnick about his directorial efforts, including ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘Maestro’, and pivoting to more dramatic roles, reports Variety.
Remnick then asked Cooper: “Are you done with fun? In other words, if another kinda fun comic role came along, it was three months of your life, it’s not ‘Hangover 5’ but something of a similar spirit.”
“Well, I would do ‘Hangover 5,’” Cooper responded. “It would be ‘Hangover 4’ first, but yea You would do that in a flash? Not just to pay the bills,” Remnick asked.
“I would probably do ‘Hangover 4’ in an instant,” Cooper said. “Just because I love Todd (Phillips), I love Zach (Galifianakis), I love Ed (Helms) so much, I probably would.

Although Bradley Cooper is taking on more serious roles as of late, the Maestro star is not opposed to revisiting his past role as Phil in The Hangover franchise.
The actor opened up about reprising his role in the Tod Phillips comedy that he starred in 2009 alongside Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and Jeffrey Tambor.
“I would probably do Hangover 4 in an instant,” Cooper said during an appearance on The New Yorker Radio Hour. “Just because I love Todd, I love Zach, I love Ed so much, I probably would.”
Despite Cooper not objecting to returning to The Hangover, he doesn’t think the director would be down for another sequel.
“I don’t think Todd is ever going to do that,” Cooper added.

Craig Mazin recently told the Los Angeles Times that the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is so weird he is surprised Disney actually bought it. Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two “Pirates” movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise written by Mazin and Ted Elliott, the latter of whom co-wrote the first four “Pirates” movies.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The last “Pirates” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” opened in 2017. Robbie told Vanity Fair last November that her movie, written by “Birds of Prey” scribe Christina Hodson, had been dropped, adding, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while,...

Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" just crossed a pretty major milestone at the box office as the film gets ready to enter its fourth weekend in theaters. The biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, can now officially count itself as one of the top 10 highest-grossing R-rated movies in history. But this movie still has a lot of juice left to squeeze out of it, meaning Universal Pictures is only going to watch it climb higher and higher on the all-time charts from here on out.
According to The Numbers, "Oppenheimer" has pulled in $578.6 million worldwide up to this point, which includes $238.1 million domestically and $340.5 million internationally. That's enough to kick 2015's "Fifty Shades of Grey" ($570.7 million) out of the top 10 lifetime grosses for an R-rated movie (not adjusted for inflation).
Nolan's latest now sits behind "The Hangover Part II" ($586.7 million), which it will pass as soon as Friday.

‘Barbie’ Is a Box Office Triumph With $155 Million Opening; ‘Oppenheimer’ Scores $80.5 Million Start
Not since the opening weekend of “Avengers: Endgame” have movie theaters had a box office weekend with such booming business. Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” are to thank, as they are the first films to both earn openings of over $80 million in the same weekend.
Overall, the two films, along with contributions from “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning” and “Sound of Freedom,” have sent overall weekend box office totals soaring to above $300 million in North America. It’s the fourth highest overall weekend ever seen in box office history, and the only weekends that top it are the opening weekends of “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
After struggling with several DC films over the past 12 months, Warner Bros. has piloted “Barbie” to a $155 million opening, which stands among the studio’s top 5 highest openings ever before inflation adjustment. The record for Warner is...

Sin City- one of the most popular places for stag nights and hen nights, is the setting for many Hollywood films. Fitness personality and television icon Jack Lalanne is getting the biopic treatment, both in nonfiction and narrative forms.
Mark Wahlberg and his Unrealistic Ideas banner will partner with Wonderfilm Media and Lalanne’s widow, Elaine, and the Lalanne family on a documentary feature and a narrative film about the fitness pioneer.
Before wellness was christened an industry and fitness deemed a lifestyle, Lalanne was an exercise and nutrition guru. After opening a gym in Oakland in the 1930s (often credited as the nation’s first fitness club), he began to evangelize the benefits of personal health, later hosting the fitness TV show The Jack Lalanne Show from 1951 to 1985. A longtime bodybuilder, Lalanne also became synonymous with his feats of strength, including, at 60 years old, swimming to Alcatraz while handcuffed.

Adam Sandler has just expanded his coterie of comedic filmmakers with Murder Mystery 2.
The new Netflix action comedy is a follow-up to the 2019 Kyle Newacheck-directed film, with this one counting Jeremy Garelick at the helm. Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reprise their roles as Nick and Audrey Spitz, now working as private detectives, who find themselves embroiled in a case that leads them to Paris after their friend, the Maharajah (Adeel Akhtar), is kidnapped at his own wedding. Mark Strong, Mélanie Laurent and Jodie Turner-Smith also star in the sequel that debuted in the top spot on the streamer’s English-films list.

Ang Lee has cast his son Mason Lee to play the iconic Chinese-American martial artist and actor Bruce Lee in Sony’s 3000 Pictures’ new biopic.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has reportedly been working on the film Bruce Lee quietly for a long time. There have been different versions of scripts from four writers before the most recent one by Dan Futterman who’s the Oscar-nominated Capote screenwriter.

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, known for helming ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’, is set to direct a film about Chinese American martial arts legend Bruce Lee.
Ang Lee’s son Mason Lee will star in the film, which is in development at Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
Dan Futterman, who wrote ‘Capote’ and ‘Foxcatcher’, is adapting the script. Jean Castelli, Alex Law and Mabel Cheung and Wells Tower wrote earlier versions of the screenplay, reports ‘Variety’.
Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 at the age of 32, had a brief but lasting presence in Hollywood as an actor, director and martial arts expert.
His films, including ‘Fist of Fury’, ‘Enter the Dragon’ and ‘The Way of the Dragon’, as well as the TV series ‘The Green Hornet’, popularised martial arts across the globe in the late 1960s and early ’70s.

Mason Lee, the son of famed filmmaker Ang Lee, will play Bruce Lee in a forthcoming film of the same name for Sony’s 3000 Pictures. Ang will direct the project from a script written by Dan Futterman. Futterman is taking over scripting duties after Jean Castelli, Alex Law, Mabel Cheung, and Wells Tower penned previous versions of the story.
It’s challenging to overestimate Lee’s astronomical impact on the martial arts film genre. Already a star in Asia, Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon catapulted his star into the stratosphere in the West. Had he lived beyond the age of 32, Lee would have achieved the success of actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and more. Still, Lee is a household name despite his early passing, and few martial artists have risen to his level of notoriety since. Lee’s death was labeled “death by misadventure” by authorities,...

Martial arts legend Bruce Lee is getting the biopic treatment. Oscar-winner Ang Lee is set to direct a film about the late actor, simply titled "Bruce Lee," for Sony's 3000 Pictures. What's more, the filmmaker has actually tapped his own son, Mason Lee ("The Hangover Part II") to star as the Hollywood icon in the upcoming biopic, making it a high-profile family affair.
According to Deadline, Dan Futterman ("Foxcatcher") is currently working on the script, a script that has already passed through many hands up to this point. Lee, in addition to direction, will produce alongside the likes of Lawrence Grey, Shannon Lee, Ben Everard, and Brian Bell, with Elizabeth Gabler and Marisa Paiva overseeing the project for the studio. Ang Lee had this to say about it:

Following Life of Pi, released a decade ago this fall, Ang Lee dabbled in the transportive cinematic technical experiments Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Gemini Man that, unfortunately, failed to connect with audiences. The director is now set to return with a film that should hopefully garner some widespread attention.
Deadline reports he will direct Bruce Lee, a biopic of the legendary martial artist and actor, who will be played by Ang Lee’s own son Mason Lee. Set up at Sony Pictures and currently being scripted by Dan Futterman.
Ang Lee is no stranger to the world of martial arts with his record-breaking Oscar-winner Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For quite some time he tried to get his 3D Muhammad Ali fight film off the ground, but it never saw the light of day, so we’ll be curious to see if any technology or planning developed for...

Law on taxing performers has been the subject of a long campaign.
Foreign actors will soon be exempt from taxation for work in Thailand following a move by the government to boost international production in the country.
The Thai cabinet passed the law on Tuesday (June 22) with the new measure valid for five years and expected to come into effect within the next three months.
All employees in Thailand are subject to a withholding tax, which varies by occupation and nationality: 5 for Thai performers and 10 for foreign performers. The tax is based on where the work is performed, not where they are paid.

Thailand boosted its film incentive scheme on Tuesday by approving a tax exemption for all foreign actors who work on movies or television productions in the country. The new measure will remain in effect for a period of at least five years.
Thailand has operated an incentive scheme since 2017 to lure international productions to shoot in the country. The existing measures include a cash rebate of 15-20 percent on all in-country production spending, up to a maximum of 75 million baht (about 2.1 million at current exchange rates). But foreign actors previously were required to pay tax to Thailand from their earnings during their work in country, in addition to whatever tax obligations they might have in their home country (the United States requires its citizens to pay tax regardless of wherever they work and reside in the world). Now and then it’s possible to find various similarities between movies that otherwise might have nothing to do with each. When noticing these moments it’s fun to take a moment and sit back to see just how alike they are and how one might have had some chance to inspire the other. There isn’t really anything to tie The Blues Brothers to The Hangover 2, but when taking a step back and trying to recall a scene that felt fairly similar it was possible to come up with something that was kind of funny to consider since the two scenes

There are so many that can be classified as essential viewing for fans of cheery cinema, but a recent poll has shown that one particular Christmas pic stands above the rest – and it’s quite possible that it’s exactly the one you expected.
National Today has revealed that the 1990 family comedy Home Alone is most widely considered the best holiday film there is. The movie stars a young Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, an eight-year-old who’s at home by himself for Christmas after his parents accidentally leave for a vacation without him. When a pair of burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) aim to break into Kevin’s house, he takes it upon himself to rig up a series of elaborate traps to fend them off.

The recent announcement that the three-decades-awaited film follow-up, Coming 2 America, will bypass its theatrical release plans to stream on Amazon Prime Video may not have been surprising in a 2020 world, but it was indicative of an intriguing trend for the comedy genre that predates the pandemic.
The Paramount-hailing, Eddie Murphy-starring sequel’s December 18 release date has just been shifted all the way to March 5, 2021; an understandable retreat in reaction to a monumental move for the industry made this week by Warner Bros. to shift its biggest tentpole picture of the year, Wonder Woman 1984, to a Christmas Day streaming premiere on HBO Max. However, Paramount’s move—first motivated by a pandemic and later seemingly by a cinematic juggernaut—may prove serendipitous for the Craig Brewer-directed Coming 2 America, since comedy movies have found surprising success and visibility in streaming rather than theaters.

The mid-’00s were a time when R-rated comedies made a huge comeback. One could argue American Pie was the beginning in 1999, but the genre didn’t really find its stride until the middle of the decade. While Judd Apatow is largely responsible for this resurgence thanks to films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad, Wedding Crashers (which Apatow had nothing to do with) was actually more successful than all of them. It even made more money domestically than Batman Begins in 2005.
15 years later, one wonders why Wedding Crashers 2 was never made to capitalize on that success. Well, according to director David Dobkin, such conversations have been going on for the better part of a decade.
“Everybody keeps hitting me up about a Wedding Crashers sequel. We don’t have a script that we’re there with yet. For many, many years every year I got offered to do the sequel,...

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

It’s now been two weeks since Todd Phillips’ Joker received a wide release, and so far, the film seems well on its way to becoming one of the year’s biggest box office hits. On top of that, a new article from Forbes is now suggesting that the Clown Prince of Crime’s standalone flick could end its run in cinemas as the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.
At the time of writing, Joker’s global total sits at $619.5 million, having overtaken the likes of Logan and Phillips’ own The Hangover Part II to become the sixth biggest R-rated feature ever released. By the end of the weekend, however, it’s expected that the movie will cross the $700 million mark, passing The Passion of the Christ and the 2017 It movie in the process. After that, the only films left to beat will be The Matrix Reloaded ($742 million), Deadpool ($783 million) and Deadpool 2.

You’ve probably seen some of Craig Mazin‘s films even if you haven’t realized it. The screenwriter was behind “The Hangover Part II” (2011), “The Hangover Part III” (2013), “Identity Thief” (2013) and “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” (2016). All of his screen credits, in fact, had have been in film until now. He made his big television debut with the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” chronicling the 1986 nuclear plant disaster in northern Ukrainian Ssr, and is currently the odds-on favorite to win the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing Emmy.
Since this is a real event that had such wide-ranging effects, getting the facts straight is of the utmost importance, but “Chernobyl” thrives in its balance between factual evidence and emotional beats. And these beats aren’t only prompted by the show’s striking visual presentation, but by its depiction of the disaster’s long-lasting implications and its character-driven nature. For instance, by...

Tencent has acquired the online video streaming rights and Phoenix Hong Kong the TV rights to Taiwanese documentary “Love Talk,” which takes a deep dive into the topic of marriage. The film is currently working towards a mainland theatrical release.
Directed by Shen Ko-Shang (“A Rolling Stone”), it is produced by Cnex Studio and 7th Day Film. Following eight couples over the course of seven years and investigating the wedding photo industry, it attempts to answer the question of what makes a long-lasting marriage — and that of whether the institution is really necessary. It depicts intimate conversations between the wedded couples about sex, love, household problems and married life.
It is one of three films in the Taiwan Cinema Showcase, which kicked off Monday at the Shanghai International Film Festival. The other two are “A Decision” and “Stand By Me.”

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” is flying high with an estimated $105 million in North America during the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.
It’s the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend total ever, topping the 2011 mark of $103.4 million for “The Hangover Part II.” The top total came in 2007, when “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” took in $139 million in its first four days. “Aladdin” is also dominating moviegoing internationally with $121 million in 56 markets.
“Aladdin” has outperformed Disney’s pre-opening domestic projections, which were in the $75 million to $85 million range, taking in $86.1 million in its first three days. The reboot of the original 1992 animated movie — which generated $502 million in worldwide box office — stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar. Guy Ritchie directed “Aladdin,” produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich.

“That’s my guy Larry,” says director Todd Phillips upon learning that Variety has selected his favorite Dp, Lawrence Sher, as a billion-dollar cinematographer.
The duo have worked together on a half dozen films, including all three installments of the “Hangover” franchise, “Due Date,” “War Dogs” and the upcoming “Joker,” with Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro, due out from Warner Bros. in October.
“Larry has the most fantastic eye and instinct, and he works harder than anyone I’ve ever met,” says Phillips. “He’s pretty much become my filmmaking partner. I talk to him about the making of the movie, not just the look. I run casting by him, he looks at cuts with me — Larry is pretty much my most consistent partner.”
On their first project, 2009’s “The Hangover,” “we were like brothers on the set,” says Phillips. “We clicked, and that was it. Since then, I’ve only gone to him.

Screenwriter John August, a member of the WGA’s negotiating committee, says he’s hopeful that the guild and the talent agencies will resume discussions in the next few weeks to break their impasse over a new franchise agreement. Formal negotiations broke off Friday, after which the guild ordered all of its members to fire their agents who refuse to sign its new Code of Conduct.
“What’s gonna happen this next week – the next few weeks – is there’s hopefully gonna be more discussions, hopefully building on some of the small things that were decided on in the room,” August said today on his Scriptnotes podcast.
But August, who also serves on the WGA West’s board of directors, noted: “It’s uncharted territory. We passed the event horizon and so we sort of don’t know what the future holds for our relationship with our agents.”

Forget “Us.” You’d be hard-pressed to find something more frightening than HBO’s full trailer for its upcoming miniseries “Chernobyl.”
Unlike the teaser trailer released a few weeks ago, the new full-length trailer (watch above), which dropped Thursday, offers a closer look at the performances at the center, and the devastation and aftermath caused by the unimaginable 1986 nuclear accident in Ukraine (then part of the Ussr).
“I’m pleased to report that the situation in Chernobyl is stable,” Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgard), the Soviet deputy prime minister and chairman of the high commission on the accident, reassures a room full of worried faces (and himself?) in the beginning of the clip. “In terms of radiation, I’m told it’s the equivalent of a chest X-ray.”
“No!” Valery Legasov (Jared Harris), the Soviet chemist leading the investigation into the explosion, exclaims. “Chernobyl is on fire. And every atom of...
