Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

Netflix’s new arrival hasn’t been talked about that much ahead of its release, but now that it’s finally available for streaming, the movie is set to become the streaming’s next big hit.
Dropped on Netflix’s platform just a few days ago, an action-horror movie titled Under Paris is dwelling on a worst case scenario for the Olympics that the City of Love will be hosting this summer.
What Is Under Paris About?
Under Paris takes its viewers a bit further into the future where the world’s biggest sports event is already taking place in Paris and everyone is witnessing France’s first ever World Triathlon Championships on the Seine.
The overall excitement suddenly fades away when Sofia, a brilliant scientist, receives a sinister message from young environmental activist Mika about a huge shark hiding in the river that may attack the Games’ competitors at any moment.

Since Steven Spielberg unleashed the iconic thriller Jaws in 1975, the world of shark-themed cinema has evolved, but rarely matched its visceral impact. The French have now stepped up to give us Under Paris, directed by Xavier Gens, famed for his contributions to series like Gangs of London and Lupin. This film, streaming on Netflix, introduces us to a scenario as outlandish as it is intriguing—a giant mako shark terrorizing the Seine River. A Troubling Threat to Parisian Waters Under Paris (or Sous la Seine) centers around Sophia, played by Bérénice Bejo, known for her stellar performance in The Artist.

So, I’m hoping you’ve just finished Xavier Gens’ Under Paris, because the tease of the end credits does raise a question. It’s easy to not notice the worldwide map visuals in the credits. Truth be told, I didn’t catch it on my first watch either. But it seems like the apex predator Lilith and her army of baby sharks aren’t stopping anytime soon, and the fall of Paris was just the beginning. Here are some possible scenarios that can pan out in the sequel to the shark movie of the year.

What happens to Sophia?
Sophia was the only one who knew what Lilith was capable of, in a time when nobody in Paris thought that a shark would harm humans. But contrary to popular belief, Lilith is a new species of shark that has adapted to freshwater and is extremely prone to attacking humans.

This month, Netflix is set to release Sous la Seine (“Under the Seine”), a chilling film featuring a killer shark preying on athletes in Paris. The premise of Sous la Seine sounds like pure fiction, but it has already stirred controversy. It’s been a dry spell for shark horror fans since Deep Blue Sea 3 four years ago. It’s a genre that has often been overlooked, and a few suboptimal movies in the past few years haven’t changed anything. Xavier Gens took the assignment seriously and dared to make a movie about a giant mako appearing in the Seine and terrorizing the heart of Paris. Gens’ Under Paris is an awe-inspiring movie with an amazing cast, and its commentary on climate change gives you something to ponder over after you’re done watching the film. You start with a Darwin quote about how the strongest and smartest species don’t always necessarily survive, but the ones who adapt to change do, and you soon realize the relevance of this.

Plot: Sophia, a brilliant scientist comes to realize that a large shark is swimming deep in the waters near Paris.
Review: There’s something about shark movies that gets to me on a primal level. Sure, there’s still just the one good one but something about them increases my anxiety to unreal heights. The surface of the water hides all the mysteries and horror beneath it, and I have a very active imagination. So my ears perked up when it was announced that Xavier Gens would be entering the world of shark horror. Because even when he doesn’t entirely hit (like this year’s Mayhem) he still manages to provide a technically proficient film with consistent momentum.

Back in 2018, Jason Statham’s sci-fi action has rekindled people’s interest in shark movies, as The Meg became hugely successful and grossed over $530 million against a budget of $130 million. The action-packed story of a group of scientists who confront a giant megalodon shark in the Pacific Ocean was extremely spectacular, yet horrifying.

Under Paris is essentially a remake of Jaws. Everything from its premise to the characteristics of its protagonists and antagonists is quite similar to those of the Jaws universe. But the subtle differences in the outcomes of some of the plot points and the nature of the action sequences make Under Paris less of a remake of Jaws and more of a spiritual legacy sequel to the Steven Spielberg blockbuster. Regardless of their similarities and differences, I do think that Under Paris is the best shark film since Jaws. So, let’s talk about them.
Spoiler Alert

The opening acts of Under Paris and Jaws are quite different. The Netflix film establishes the threatening nature of Lilith and the connection between her and Sophia. “Under Paris” is a movie directed by Xavier Gens starring Bérénice Bejo. With Nassim Lyes and Iñaki Lartigue.
Once upon a time in Hollywood, Spielberg spat out a film about a gigantic, man-eating shark, and for four decades that cinematographic idea has been rehashed, reshaped and reimagined. Step forward a French variation of the idea, this time with less focus on spectacular imagery and more on a carefully crafted screenplay where a host of characters band together to confront the toothy menace.
The film, tentatively titled “Under Paris” on Netflix, is a shark movie with a difference. Expect less special effects and more character-driven plot lines that swim against the tide of typical shark flicks. And with a distinct French flavour, there are a myriad of ideas and messages lurking below the surface.

Under Paris was building up to a battle between Sophia and Lilith in the Seine. Since the film was essentially a remake of Jaws, I thought that Xavier Gens and his writers would script a brutal confrontation between the two of them and then call it a day. But, even if I were given at least 100 guesses to predict the final moments of the film, I probably wouldn’t have said that the movie was going to end with a mutant shark whizzing through the Seine while being shot at by the police and triggering a series of explosions that caused Paris to get completely flooded. Sure, if I’d paid attention to the fact that the opening moments of the film hinted at the seemingly dormant explosives lying at the bottom of the river, I would’ve expected that outcome. Still, I would’ve been surprised. That said, does...

Directed by Xavier Gens, Under Paris is a horror thriller that revolves around a mutant shark that ends up in the Seine. Marine scientist Sophia had been studying the movement of the shark she named Lilith through a beacon she had tagged with it. Sophia and her team embarked on a mission to protect marine life on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. She had sent members of her team to collect Lilith’s sample to get a better grasp of her condition. Her team members were surprised to see an injured baby sperm whale when they dove in to find Lilith. It suggested that there was prey on the loose, but they had no idea what they were dealing with.
The team was in complete shock when they came across Lilith, who had grown significantly in size. Sophia requested her teammate Chris to bring back the sample, even though Lilith...

“What if there were a shark in the Seine?” is, one can only assume, a question that Parisians ponder on a daily basis. It’s also brilliant in its simplicity, if not quite as appealingly silly a high-concept premise as “what if there were snakes on a plane?” and “what if the moon … fell?” Look no further than “Under Paris” for an answer to the hypothetical that surely keeps Emmanuel Macron up at night, as Netflix’s new thriller swims rather than sinks as it adds life to a genre that’s been bloodless for far too long.
Most importantly, director Xavier Gens (“Lupin”) plays it straight — there’s no winking at the crowd or so-bad-it’s-good posturing, just killer set-pieces and a firm understanding of the fact that the best creature features are those in which you see the creature as little as possible.

Could it be? Are the "Shark Horror" gods smiling upon us from Atlantis? Xavier Gens' Under Paris blends the bureaucratic foolhardiness of Jaws with Deep Blue Sea’s tempo. While science-based ecological themes get murky, the film shines at its most chaotic. A rogue female mako swimming France' Seine River brings shades of Dick Maas' Amsterdamned or Uncaged, varying takes on horrific (and preposterous) scenarios in major metropolitan areas. Don't look to Under Paris for grounded realism or bulletproof storytelling, but compared to the recent deluge of utterly impotent fin flicks over the last few years? Gens' aquatic thriller on Netflix is like stumbling upon the Holy Grail of Shark Horror.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) stars as oceanic wildlife researcher Sophia. Tragedy strikes when a tagged mako named Lilith turns on Sophia's diving team, including her husband, leaving Sophia with permanent pressure damage and her scuba squad deceased.

The familiar touchstones of summer shark horror are there in spades in French filmmaker Xavier Gens’ (Frontier(s), Cold Skin) Netflix feature Under Paris. Jaws and eco-horror collide as a Mako shark goes rogue right at the peak of summer’s busy season. As its title suggests, the novelty here comes in the form of its setting: the Seine River and Paris’ labyrinthine underground system. The unique location and stunning underwater photography go far in Gens’ latest, but not far enough: an overreliance on a familiar story and clashing tones work against the summer shark carnage.
An intense opening introduces scientist Sophia (Bérénice Béjo) as she and her team, including her lover, investigate a trash island out at sea. They find the carcass of a baby sperm whale trapped and starved by the debris, which then attracts sharks. That includes Lilith, a tagged female Mako that Sophia’s team has been tracking.

Given how trailers and even teasers give away most of the film’s plot, I tend to just watch 10–20 seconds of it and make up my mind. Under Paris had me hooked based on its premise that there’s a shark in the Seine. As a fan of shark films, I didn’t need to know much more before diving into it. Now, seemingly unrelated to that, I was watching a video by Patrick Willems about what’s going to be the next big thing in the world of entertainment after superhero movies. While on the topic of legacy sequels, Willems mentioned Steven Spielberg. That got me thinking: while Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park got the legacy sequel treatment twice, why hasn’t anybody done a legacy sequel for Jaws? Sure, the sequels were bad, but they were profitable. It’s considered the foundation stone for shark films as well...

Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, is set to be released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th – but producers Sébastien Auscher and Edouard Duprey have been hit with a parasitism lawsuit filed by filmmaker Vincent Dietschy, who claims that Under Paris resembles a project called Silure, which he began working on in 2011. According to Deadline, if a judge rules in favor of Dietschy at the initial hearing on June 14th, Netflix might have to remove Under Paris just days after its release, as Dietschy’s lawyer has requested that the release of the film be suspended while the parasitism lawsuit makes its way through the court system.
Dietschy says he registered Silure with France’s rights management body Sacd in 2012. Going by article 1240 of France’s Civil Code, parasitism is what it’s called when “one party follows in the footsteps of another party...

Netflix’s Seine-set shark thriller Under Paris could be taken off the platform within days of its release on June 5 due to legal proceedings brought by a writer-director who claims it was developed without his knowledge from an original idea he registered with France’s rights management body Sacd in 2011.
An initial hearing on June 14 will pass judgement on a legal request by the complainant’s lawyer for the film’s release to be suspended while a second lawsuit around accusations of parasitism makes its way through the courts.
Taking its cue from article 1240 of France’s Civil Code, parasitism is defined as one party following in the footsteps of another party’s efforts and know-how to benefit from their enterprise without seeking permission or making payment.

There are sharks all up in the Seine in Netflix’s upcoming aquatic horror, Under Paris. Here’s the first trailer.
At some point, sharks will club together and get a PR manager; until then, we’ll keep getting films like Jaws, Sharknado, and upcoming efforts like Beast Of War, Something In The Water and Renny Harlin’s Deep Water.
To the ever-growing list we can now add Under Paris, coming to a small screen near you this summer courtesy of Netflix. If you haven’t gathered already: yes, the film really is about sharks swimming up the Seine to terrorise all the hundreds of people that (presumably) swim in Paris’ waters on any given day.
Yes, it’s all incredibly silly, but if the trailer’s anything to go by, everyone involved knows it’s all incredibly silly. Under Paris is directed by Xavier Gens, who broke through with the extremely gory 2007 indie horror,...

Countless shark attack horror movies have flooded the market since Steven Spielberg changed the game with Jaws back in the 1970s, but the reality is that most of them aren’t very good. For every quality shark attack movie like Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows, there are about 100 imitators that have only really served to devalue the entire subgenre in their wake.
But every so often, we get a good one. And Netflix may have one of those on their hands with Under Paris, a shark attack horror movie from French filmmaker Xavier Gens.
Fresh off the just-released action movie Mayhem!, Xavier Gens (Frontiers, Cold Skin) is back this June with Under Paris, and Netflix has unleashed the official trailer this week.
Following in the grand tradition of Jaws, a celebration turns into a PR nightmare when a hungry shark comes to Paris. One shark. A whole lot of tasty humans.

"It will be carnage." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a horror thriller shark movie called Under Paris, about a shark literally chomping its way through the rivers and sewers of the French capital city. The French title is Sous la Seine, translating directly to Under the Seine. Sophia, a brilliant scientist comes to know that a large shark is swimming deep in the river Seine. In order to save Paris from an international bloodbath, a grieving scientist is forced to face her tragic past when a giant shark appears in the Seine and starts tormenting the city's inhabitants. Under Paris stars Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Léa Léviant, and Iñaki Lartigue. This is such a hilariously cheesy plot with the triathlon swimmers all getting taken out and the Jaws-inspired mayor who refuses to do anything or stop anything. It's pretty much a B-movie with a Netflix budget. I have to admit,...
