Getting a feature into Cannes’ official selection is among the pinnacles of filmmaking achievements for most production companies. Ireland’s Element Pictures clearly isn’t most production companies — this year, it has three.
According to co-founder Ed Guiney, who set up Element with Andrew Lowe in 2001, while his company’s triple-headed festival visit may be “wonderful”, it’s simply down to good fortune and timing. “You know, some years you have nothing for Cannes,” he says, speaking from Element’s breezy, white-walled Dublin headquarters, located above an outdoor clothing shop and a jeweler on the Irish capital’s busy O’Connell Street, where it also runs its distribution arm Volta Pictures and the programming for the popular arthouse Light House Cinema, which it has operated since 2012.
But for anyone who has been keeping an eye on Element over the last decade, this edition of Cannes is merely another unprecedented milestone...

White Lotus and One Day breakout Leo Woodall is leading an Apple TV+ thriller opposite Black Adam star Quintessa Swindell about a young maths graduate who discovers the secret to prime numbers, with Ridley Scott producing.
Woodall will play Edward Brook in Prime Target and Scott’s indie Scott Free is producing with New Regency. The show is created by Sherlock scribe Steve Thompson.

No working actor better articulates acting an act of authorship than Tilda Swinton. Beyond her work with Lynne Ramsay, Wes Anderson, and a constellation of distinctive artists, her presence is a kind co-writing; to watch her work––or better, to watch her work at work via any making-of footage––in the films of Luca Guadagnino, Joanna Hogg, and Derek Jarman is to witness a kind of live discovery function of acting. “It’s like working with my Dp,” Guadagnino told Screen Daily. “It’s like working with someone who is actually contributing to the movie itself, not just adding her voice as a performer only, but adding her voice as a filmmaker.”
Swinton confirmed this spirit (as well as a few future projects) via Les Inrockuptibles: “The Eternal Daughter is the beginning of a new era for me, yes. And my next films, those with Julio [Torres] and Joshua [Oppenheimer], but...

At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

From her striking debut to The Souvenir and new release The Eternal Daughter, the British film-maker circles around loss, memory and rebirth in dramas of piercing intensity
Joanna Hogg’s latest film, The Eternal Daughter (in cinemas now), is a ghost story; a tale of a mother and daughter – both played by Hogg’s longtime collaborator Tilda Swinton – who stay in a remote hotel where the spectres of the past are everywhere. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric piece, imbued with Hogg’s signature understated strength, and inflected with the same matter-of-fact eeriness that defined Jonathan Miller’s timeless 1968 Mr James TV adaptation Whistle and I’ll Come to You.
It was Hogg’s executive producer Martin Scorsese who encouraged her to make a ghost story, believing that she was at the right point in her life and career to do so. But Hogg’s films have always been haunted by ghosts,...

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

If there’s something you’d love to ask the daring and versatile actor, about to take on two roles in Joanna Hogg’s The Eternal Daughter, now is your chance
Activist, writer, model, performance artist: Tilda Swinton has so many strings to her bow that calling her an actor feels insufficient. Perhaps more successfully than any actor working today, she has straddled the boundary between arthouse and mainstream cinema, equally at home in a billion-dollar franchise like The Chronicles of Narnia as she is in films by Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
Born in London in 1960 to an aristocratic military family of Scottish descent, Swinton later rejected her conservative upbringing, embracing leftwing politics, poetry and experimental theatre. On graduating from Cambridge the filmmaker Derek Jarman became her friend and mentor, casting her in numerous films and leading to her breakout role in Sally Potter’s Orlando.

Andrew Haigh wants to caress your spirit with his delicate and unassumingly poetic “All Of Us Strangers.” It is an otherworldly rumination on grief, love, loneliness and trauma, as well as a sophisticated ghost story that takes a page out of Joanna Hogg’s “The Eternal Daughter” for anyone carrying around a baggage of unspoken sorrow.
Caress your sprit Haigh does, for a while, with the kindness we come to expect from the lyrical British filmmaker of “45 Years”—a swelling account of the blind spots of a marriage—and “Lean on Pete,” an aching meditation on Americana on the fringes which, in a just world, would have been as widely celebrated as its closest thematic companion, the Oscar-winning “Nomadland.”
One of the most tender storytellers of our time, Haigh then pulls something else out of his magical sleeve in due course. Just like he did with those former aforesaid gems,...

The Melbourne International Film Festival has unveiled the full lineup for its 2023 edition, with “Shayda,” by Iranian-Australian director Noora Niasari, set as the opening title.
The festival will run as a live event August 3-20, at venues around the city and its suburbs, and online Aug 18 – 27. The hybrid format was developed during the Covid pandemic and Miff found it useful as a tool to reach further away audiences and wider demographics than a strictly in-theater edition.
The ‘Bright Horizons’ competition section open to films by first- or second-time feature directors contains an 11-title mix of new and recently-debuted works.
As well as opening the festival, “Shayda” will play in competition. The competition’s other Australian-made title was announced as “The Rooster,” from actor turned writer-director Mark Leonard Winter.
International titles in competition include “Banel & Adama,” by Franco-Senegalese director Ramata-Toulaye Sy, which played in competition in Cannes; “How to Have Sex,...

After commissioning short films by some of the world’s greatest directors––Tsai Ming-liang, Bertrand Bonello, Jean-Marie Straub, Richard Linklater, Christian Petzold, Jafar Panahi––Paris’ Centre Pompidou continues their self-portrait series Où en êtes-vous? (more or less Where Are You?) with Joanna Hogg, marking her first work since last year’s The Eternal Daughter.
Pace that film (and their Souvenir counterparts) it emotionally orients around Hogg’s feelings towards her mother, the dissociation of traveling in faraway Los Angeles, and even bears intimations of Daughter‘s ghost story––all shot in a form suggesting (or outright adopting) first-person Pov while edited at a far faster clip than her typically stately style. This is a nice little corner of her filmography to see filled out, with any luck the prelude to a new feature.

BFI Distribution has picked up Tilda Swinton and Joanna Hogg’s latest collaboration, The Eternal Daughter, for theatrical release in the UK and Ireland.
The pic will hit cinemas this autumn and form the centerpiece of a Joanna Hogg retrospective season hosted at BFI Southbank that will also include a programme of films that have influenced her work.
The Eternal Daughter is the BFI’s second acquisition from A24, following the Irish drama God’s Creatures, starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson earlier this year. The film also marks Hogg and Swinton’s third collaboration following the acclaimed two-part Souvenir series, which starred Swinton’s daughter Honor Swinton Byrne.
Written and directed by Hogg with Martin Scorsese once again on board as Executive Producer, the film follows an artist and her elderly mother who confront long-buried secrets when they return to a former family home, now a hotel haunted by its mysterious past.

It’s been nearly 30 years since the SXSW Music Conference, held annually in Austin, Texas, added a film component. In the decades since, the SXSW film festival has become a beast all its own, offering a forward-looking view of today’s cinematic landscape, from the work of the buzziest new Hollywood creators to the below-the-radar indie filmmakers looking to make their own unique impact.
This year’s event, held from March 10 to 19, is no different, with a wide-ranging lineup of movies ranging from potential franchise-starter Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to off-the-beaten-track biopics like Flamin’ Hot, to breakout horror offerings like Talk to Me. There are scores of films on tap, from narrative features to documentaries to animated shorts, and the only downside is that we can’t somehow bring Austin and its glittering stack of new films to the rest of the world. Fremantle has struck a two-year, first-look deal with Nine Hours, the new production label set up by Edward Berger, director of the Oscar-nominated “All Quiet on the Western Front,” and his partner Luke Rivett.
Netflix drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” recently scored nine Oscar nominations, including best picture, and a record 14 BAFTA nominations. Berger’s other directing credits include “Patrick Melrose,” “Your Honor,” “ The Terror” and Fremantle’s “Deutschland 83.”
The two-year deal will see Fremantle become the primary home for all of Nine Hours’ television projects. It will also give the super-indie second look access to Berger’s new film pipeline. The new production company was launched by Berger and Rivett with producer Jeanne Tremsal.
The deal with Berger was spearheaded by Fremantle’s Christian Vesper, who was recently promoted to CEO of global drama, and Seb Shorr, executive VP of commercial and business affairs. Lorenzo De Maio assisted on the deal.

We just wrapped a year of some solid female-directed films: Dimee Shi’s animated explosion “Turning Red,” Sarah Polley’s Mennonite masterpiece “Women Talking,” Joanna Hogg’s exquisitely understated “The Eternal Daughter.” Now it’s time to get hype for another slate of women-led projects, including two wide-release comedies centered around Asian-American women, the next Greta Gerwig joint, and Elizabeth Banks’ “Cocaine Bear.”

Exclusive: Once again, working under the Writers Guild’s restrictive rules for inclusion among nominees for the WGA Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, several leading Oscar-contending screenplays are Awol on the official WGA ballot sent to eligible voting members Monday morning.
This is an annual occurrence as, unlike other guild competitions including DGA, SAG and PGA, the WGA remains firm in its golden rule of eligibility for its top film honors: The movie must have been written under the WGA Mba or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of various international WGA-affiliated organizations.
Thus such hot Oscar and BAFTA prospects as Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Cannes Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness and many more did not even make the starting gate for WGA.
In the Original Screenplay category, BAFTA just last week longlisted Banshees and Triangle of Sadness...

“Tár” was named Best Picture, its titular lead Cate Blanchett was honored as Best Actress and Colin Farrell was voted Best Actor this weekend by the National Society of Film Critics at its 57th annual awards. The wins for “Tár” and Blanchett gave the film and its star a rare trifecta as both earned wins late last year from the New York Film Critics Circle and Los Angeles Film Critics Association in addition to the Nsfc. Also earning a clean sweep of the three prestigious critics honors was Ke Huy Kwan, who pulled off the hat trick as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Farrell, meanwhile, won Best Actor for his star turns in both “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “After Yang.” Farrell’s “Banshees” co-star Kerry Condon took home the prize for Best Supporting Actress.
