The first draft was written in 1997 during the director's slow time as a hotel desk clerk. He wrote another screenplay prior to 'Insomniac' that he liked better, and wrote 'Insomniac' intending to shoot the movie for practice.
Shot on over 11 locations throughout the state of Arkansas, but the majority of principal photography took place in Little Rock and Hot Springs, AR.
'Insomniac' was originally conceived in black and white and was to be shot on 16mm, but was instead shot in DV and in color. The lengthy duration of the production outlasted two cameras, and when color matching the three cameras did not work out, the movie was converted to black and white in post production.
Christopher Tribe, who plays the role of Cody in the film, is also the singer for Little Rock based hard rock band Wish Tribe, whose music is featured throughout the soundtrack. Bandmate Kelly Griffin plays the role of Frank in the movie, and also assisted with post production.
The current version of 'Insomniac' is a totally different story than the original draft. The short film screenplay was adapted into a feature, and about 80% of the script was shot before the decision was made to make several casting changes. The current script was written to create better parts for the cast members that survived the changes.
