Perhaps the biggest news about the forthcoming NBC series "Bent" is how Ep Tad Quill is promoting it. The show, which features comic heavyweights like Jeffrey Tambor and J.B. Smoove in addition to Amanda Peet and David Walton, is being sold as "romantic comedy" rather than just a "comedy." This may seem like an subtle distinction to many, but when it comes to grabbing potential viewers, it could be a larger problem.
The series focuses on Peet, a woman who is getting back into the dating scene after a nasty divorce. This is where the David Walton enters as a pot-smoking, womanizing contractor who is there to rebuild Peet's kitchen. They are surrounded by a group of misfits who each have their own problems including Tambor, Smoove and Margo Harshman, who plays Peet's sister Screwsie (a name Harshman says her character earned "after many years of 'hard work'").

Over the past few years, NBC has been the only network actively trying to develop a lesbian-based sitcom. Under the helm of out gay Chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt, none of them have made it from pilots to pick-ups. This includes an unnamed sitcom from Liz Feldman and last year's I Hate That I Love You. But at today's TCA NBC panel, Greenblatt assured me they are still trying, and it could happen in 2012 with the in-progress My Best Friend is a Lesbo. He told me:
All still in development. We actually have several shows with gay and lesbian characters in them. We have a big Sean Hayes show, we have a Ryan Murphy show. Too early to tell on that front. But it's a constituency, it's part of the fabric of the company and it should be included.

Will Ryan Seacrest replace Matt Lauer, should the Today co-anchor vacate his seat next year? According to The Wall Street Journal, that is something the higher ups at NBC are actively pursuing.
The American Idol/E! News host is being courted as a possible successor for Lauer, the newspaper reports, seeing as the latter has reportedly expressed interest in leaving the show in the not-so-distant future. The alleged talks are said to be in the very early stages, and of course there is speculation that this news “leaked” in part to light a fire under Lauer at the negotation table.

Judging from the fall schedules released thus far by NBC, ABC, and Fox, a decent number of the networks' comedy offerings will aim to encroach on the formula used in Judd Apatow's recent films: they focus on beautiful and/or powerful women, and the slightly emasculated, slacker guys who love them.
NBC, with its Thursday night block of critically acclaimed, laugh-track-free, single-camera comedies, will try the multi-camera approach with "Whitney," which follows a couple (played by comedian Whitney Cummings and a shaggy, bearded Chris D'Elia, fitting the bill quite nicely) who watches most of their friends marry off, while they choose not to tie the knot.
Watch a preview:
Also slated for the fall is the Lorne Michaels-produced "Up All Night," featuring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett as parents of a newborn daughter. Applegate is the high-powered working mom and Arnett is the stay-at-home dad who plays Xbox...

Christina was there, along with Carson Daly, to promote The Voice, and she sat down on The Today Show this morning to talk about what attracted her to the judging job. Most of the new comedies NBC ordered for next season look like the comedies that have aired on the network in recent years: They're laugh track-free, single-camera shows in the vein of "30 Rock" or "Community."
But not all of them. The fall show "Whitney" and the midseason series "Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea" care cut from the old-school sitcom mold -- a live audience you can hear laughing, multiple cameras and setup-punchline rhythms reminiscent of shows from NBC's comedy heyday in the '80s and '90s.
Formal differences aside, though, what matters with any comedy is whether it's funny. Here are our first impressions of NBC's comedy offerings for 2011-12.

NBC made their formal upfront announcements today and here are descriptions and trailers for their new musical drama and comedies.
Smash – Midseason Mondays 10/9 C
Co-written by Steven Spielberg and Theresa Rebeck, this story is based around characters who are producing and performing a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. Do they go with the young talent, or the experienced stage veteran? Smash will star Debra Messing (Will & Grace) and former American Idol contestant Katherine McPhee, Angelica Huston (Royal Tenenbaums), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl), and Megan Hilty (Desperate Housewives), which has suddenly earned the moniker of “Adult Glee.” Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and Marc Shaiman (Hairspray, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) will work on original songs for the show and has the strong support from NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt who tried to develop Smash when he was at Showtime. Universal Media Studios and Dreamworks TV will produce.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
With Bob Greenblatt having replaced the outgoing Jeff Zucker, NBC is looking to turn around its dismal fortunes and has started by significantly cutting back on a bunch of shows which were simply not performing. This schedule takes some big risks with some new shows needing to perform if they're to survive, while two two-hour reality show blocks early in the week have certainly raised eyebrows.
There are twelve new shows in all, half of which are being held until mid-season. In the Fall, the biggest gamble is "Prime Suspect" - the U.S. remake of the iconic British police drama. With only the rarest of exceptions, American remakes of British shows have generally failed...

And just like that, upfronts week is off and running with the announcement of NBC 2011-12 primetime schedule. The press release says that NBC has a "commitment to innovation, strategic positioning and season-long strength." That statement is definitely supported by the fact that, over the past year, they've cancelled "Outlaw," "Undercovers," "The Paul Reiser Show," "Chase," "Perfect Couples," "The Cape," "The Event," "Outsourced" and "Law & Order: La." Of course, they put them all on in the first place. So the question is whether their slate of new shows -- of which there are many, with six new dramas and six new comedies -- is more of the same old crap, or something that can actually back up their bold proclamation. Let's take a look-see at the new schedule and some clips from the new shows. ...Oh, and right off the bat, we should note that the three bubble shows that...

Coming to NBC midseason is "Bent," a Tad Quill ("Scrubs," "Spin City") penned romantic comedy about the most unlikely of pairings.
Amanda Peet stars as Alex, a no nonsense lawyer who is recently divorced and raising her 8-year-old daughter with a jailed ex-husband. When she decides to remodel her kitchen, Pete (David Walton) comes strutting into her life and begins to break down her walls (both literally and figuratively, we presume). He's a beach bum, a womanizer and exactly the type of man that would typically repulse Alex.
Joining Peet and Walton are Jeffrey Tambor, Margo Harshman and the adorable Joey King. Craig Zisk of "Nurse Jackie" and "Weeds" directs as we watch two people who are "bent, but not broken." ...

Friday the 13th turned out to be rather unlucky for a pair of low-rated NBC dramas: "The Event" and "Law & Order: La" won't live to see another season.
On the other hand, several more comedy pilots got good news: "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Bent," "Free Agents" and "BFFs" all were picked up to series on Friday, Deadline reports.
As for the cancellations, neither one is a big surprise. "Law & Order: La" merits a mild raise of the eyebrows only because of the "L&O" brand's long history at NBC, but it's not even the first one-and-done show in the franchise's history: "L&O: Trial by Jury" lasted only one season in 2005. Its ratings were nothing special either: Although it's averaging 8 million viewers for the season and a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, it's been well below that since its April 11 return/cast shuffle -- most episodes have...

NBC Picks Up 'Awake,' 'Playboy' & 'Grimm' 'Wonder Woman' Not Going Ahead At NBC, 'Mann's World' May Be Shopped To Cable Update: I hear NBC just picked up two more comedy pilots: romantic comedy Bent, starring Amanda Peet and David Walton, which I hear will probably be for midseason, and the untitled Parham/St. Clair project, now called BFFs. That makes a total of six new comedy series and five dramas for the peacock network. BFFs, written by and starring Upright Citizens Brigade alums Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair, has been a classic dark horse. It was very low-budget presentation ("made for nothing," as one agent put it), the network brass didn't quite like the first cut but was they were intrigued enough to order a second cut and that did very well. Former "Smallville" star Kristin Kreuk is joining another show about beings who are not of this world.
Kreuk has been cast in NBC's pilot "17th Precinct," a drama that blends cop-show and fantasy elements and takes place in a world where magic and mythical creatures are real. She'll play the wife of Jamie Bamber's detective character, TVLine reports.
She'll be billed as a guest star in the pilot, and if the show makes NBC's schedule her role will likely be recurring. It would be Kreuk's second show at NBC, following a guest arc on "Chuck" last season.
Other notable names in the latest round of casting:
"Lost" star Terry O'Quinn has joined the cast of ABC's pilot "Hallelujah," a Marc Cherry-created drama about a battle between good and evil in a small town. The Emmy winner will play a wealthy man who has huge influence over the town.
