The late Chadwick Boseman will be honored as Hero for the Ages at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time retrospective special.
Don Cheadle and Robert Downey Jr. will present the posthumous award, which honors a star whose heroism on-screen was only surpassed by the true hero they were off-screen. Hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, the 90-minute special premieres Sunday, December 6th 8pm Et/Pt. It will honor the biggest and best moments in film and TV from the 80s until now.
A SAG award-winning actor, Boseman landed his first major role in Persons Unknown, but his breakout performance came in 2013 for his portrayal of baseball player Jackie Robinson in Warner Bros’ 42. He went on to star as singer James Brown in Get on Up and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. He made history as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Black superhero to headline a feature with Black Panther.

The 2020 Emmy Awards were unlike any in history due to Covid-19, but they rose above the restrictions and delivered a very entertaining show. Jimmy Kimmel hosted from a deserted Staples Arena with participants appearing via video conference from their homes, as many poked fun at the unusual arrangement.
The tone was generally upbeat, but the Emmys’ tribute to notable industry figures that have died over the last year proved to be quite moving. It was soundtracked by H.E.R. covering Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and honored Glee star Naya Rivera, presenter Regis Philbin and Big Bird performer Caroll Spinney (among many others). Most impactful, though, was the appearance of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, whose death last month after secretly battling cancer shocked and saddened the world. The montage concluded with footage of Boseman delivering a speech against a backdrop of the Wakandan Ancestral Plane while shooting stars passed through the sky.

In a world consumed by celebrity culture and stardom, Chadwick Boseman was a selective and consummate method actor. He rarely gave interviews, or allowed the public access to his personal life. Boseman, who died August 28 at the age of 43, never spoke publicly about his colon cancer diagnosis, which he received four years ago. “His parents are very humble and private people. It does not surprise me that he decided to be very private about his illness and through the stages of death,” said Terence Roberts, mayor of Anderson, S.C., Boseman’s hometown. “It speaks to his character. His values were instilled by them.”
As a performer almost obsessively dedicated to the details of his craft, tributes will surely praise Chadwick Boseman’s diligent preparation. While that indicated the commitment he brought to his characters, the pleasure in watching him on screen didn’t lie in his homework; it was his uncanny ability to disappear.

Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer on Friday at age 43, made a striking impression in both TV and on the big screen in his too-short time in the spotlight.
Nathaniel Ray, “Lincoln Heights” (2008-09)
Chadwick Boseman had popped in small TV roles in the early 2000s but he had his first major breakthrough role in this ABC Family drama as a member of the U.S. Army who belatedly learns he’s the son of the series lead (Russell Hornsby).
Graham McNair, “Persons Unknown” (2010)
He followed “Lincoln Heights” with a role on a short-lived NBC drama about a group of strangers who find themselves plunked into a ghost town.
Jackie Robinson, “42” (2013)
Chadwick Boseman landed his first lead role on the big screen in Brian Helgeland’s biopic of Jackie Robinson, the first Black player to break into Major League Baseball. He starred opposite Harrison Ford, who played the Brooklyn Dodgers’ general manager.

The name M. Night Shyamalan promises unexpected twists and turns, and though his legacy has become somewhat tarnished since the heady days of “The Sixth Sense,” he absolutely delivers with Fox’s upcoming “Wayward Pines” 10-episode limited series. Shyamalan is an executive producer and directs the pilot. Adapted by Chad Hodge (“The Playboy Club”) from Blake Crouch’s popular book series, “Pines” has been rightfully compared to David Lynch’s ambitious “Twin Peaks,” but it also shares striking similarities with other shows including “The Prisoner,” “Lost” and the more obscure “Persons Unknown.” Things are never what they seem and no...

This review is based on the first two episodes of season one, which we were provided with by Fox prior to broadcast.
This May brings along the five year anniversary of the Lost series finale. The amount of shows that have launched in the wake of the ABC juggernaut, and subsequently failed to capture its magic, are innumerable. There have been surprisingly good tries (the second season of Revolution) and colossal failures (Persons Unknown, indeed), but by-and-large it appears most everyone has come to the same conclusion: it’s time to stop trying. And that’s okay. Television is nothing if not malleable, and just as the influx of gruff anti-heroes rose to power following Breaking Bad (and, really, The Sopranos), we’ve seen fewer and fewer as the Los Pollos Hermanos gets smaller and smaller in our rearview mirrors.
Why mention all of this? Because the same appears to...

How do you describe the indescribable? That is one of the biggest challenges facing Fox’s 10-part psychological thriller, Wayward Pines. A secret service agent finds himself in an idyllic town, but upon closer inspection, he realizes that the residents live under a strict set of rules governed by a sinister, omnipresent force. It’s a premise eerily familiar to fans of the cult drama Twin Peaks, or even the short-lived NBC drama Persons Unknown, but Pines comes with a series of tantalizing twists courtesy of the show’s executive producer and director, M. The best thing about Wayward Pines, the new, short-run effort coming to Fox, is watching how it attempts to learn from the mistakes of similar shows that have come before.
From the less-than-stellar “remake” of The Prisoner with Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen, to the largely goofball Persons Unknown (which was, sort of, The Prisoner 2: The Group), and everything else in the “trapped in a town” genre, the story can’t work if the characters are empty plot devices.
Wayward Pines is a rare example of setting out with the tropes and traps of a genre in order to dodge the pitfalls inherent in telling a type of story that can never fully distance itself from the fact that it’s pretty goofy. The problem is that while the show clearly tries to look at what made other efforts fall apart, and do those things differently, it isn’t...

Directed by Tate Taylor, who broke out a few summers ago directing and adapting the Academy Award-winning The Help, the film will chronicle Brown's entire life story as he escaped a life of extreme poverty and violence to become one of the most famous, dynamic performers of all time. The project has a couple high profile producers attached, including Brian Grazer and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. Prior to being cast in 42, Boseman primarily worked on television, starring in the series Persons Unknown and Lincoln Heights, and starring in single episodes of shows...

Who doesn’t love The Twilight Zone? Well, I don’t know, but I know I don’t want to meet them. It’s safe to assume that most horror fans of any form of advance age(I’m 35) grew up, at the very least, watching re-runs of The Twilight Zone on syndicated television. Some of the creepiest moments in television history are thanks to this series. Hell, I remember as a kid, when I was falling asleep to the sound of the TV playing in the background, just the sound of the opening theme chilled me to my core. I have so many fond memories of watching this show as a child, and as an adult.
Collectors of media are aware, The Twilight Zone has been available on various formats, in various packages for us to consume. But, they’ve always been a bit on the pricey side. I...

In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford, Cowboys & Aliens) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman, TV’s Persons Unknown) to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Due out in theatres this April, Brian Helgeland’s baseball biopic 42 tells the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to break the colour barrier in America’s pastime by joining the Dodgers back in 1947.
We saw the first trailer last September, which gave us a brilliant first look at the film, with a lot of promise. And with only a few more months to go before it hits the big screen, Apple have debuted the second trailer for the Warner Bros. movie, which is every bit as brilliant.

Last Resort, Season 1, Episode 1: “Captain”
Written by Karl Gajdusek and Shawn Ryan
Directed by Martin Campbell
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
FX’s cop series The Shield stands as a classic television show, giving viewers complex storylines, three dimensional characters that couldn’t be easily categorized as either good or evil, and performances by the likes of Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson that made people regard them in a new light. While this is show creator Shawn Ryan’s most well-known show, and deservedly so, he is by no means a one-trick pony; he subsequently went on to create two more excellent series in Terriers and The Chicago Code, neither of which, sadly, saw a second season. Thankfully for television fans, Ryan hasn’t gotten discouraged; rather, he’s gotten right back in the saddle, signing a deal with Sony even as The Chicago Code was on its last legs.

It’s not that often we get to see America’s pastime on the big screen, but the past year has seen the Oscar-nominated Moneyball emerge from Colombia, and Trouble with the Curve from Warner Bros. this past weekend in the Us.

With all the sports biopics we've seen over the years, and given the tremendous impact that Jackie Robinson had on American sports, you'd think that we'd have seen his story told on the big screen at least a few hundred times by now. Strangely, although there have been a ton of made-for-tv movies and a few documentaries over the years, as far as I can tell the only major retelling of the Jackie Robinson story on the big screen was the 1950 film that starred the man himself. Now writer-director Brian Helgeland (Payback, A Knight's Tale) is attempting to rectify that situation with his upcoming movie 42. The movie stars Chadwick Boseman (Persons Unknown) in the lead role, with Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey and Alan Tudyk playing Phillies manager Ben Chapman. Although you might assume this would be pure Oscar bait material, the movie isn't actually coming out until next April.

You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve heard the hype. Now there’s only one thing you want to know: Which of the new fall shows are worth watching and which should be avoided at all costs? In this continuing series, we give you the scoop on some of the most highly-anticipated shows of the season, with today’s subject being ABC’s Last Resort.
The Boilerplate: Since these pilot presentations may go through numerous rewrites and casting changes prior to premiere, this by no means should be considered an official review. Rather a preview of what one can expect come Fall.
The Plot: After failing to follow “fishy” orders to fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan, the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado, led by Captain Marcus Chaplin, have little choice but to find refuge on an exotic island in an attempt to clear their sullied names and return home safely.

For all their success so far, the Marvel movies have, aside from a few smallish parts, been a pretty lilywhite affair to date: only Samuel L. Jackson was a significant minority presence in "The Avengers." But signs are that the studio aren't going to keep that up for too long: yesterday, it was reported that the company are actively moving ahead with a movie about "Black Panther," the African prince-turned-crimefighter, and are targeting a release in 2014 or 2015.
Marvel has denied the reports, but this wouldn't be the first time they've denied something that turned out to be bang-on, and Latino Review's track record with Marvel scoops is pretty strong, so it seems to be a good bet that there'll be an official announcement about a "Black Panther" movie before too long. Which of course leads to the question: Who could play the character?

"Last Resort" doesn't exactly seem on-brand for ABC, but the trailer for the new series sure has us intrigued.
Andre Braugher ("Men of a Certain Age") stars as the captain of a nuclear submarine who receives possibly sketchy orders to launch a strike on Pakistan. When he refuses and another U.S. warship fires on the sub, he and his executive officer (Scott Speedman, "Felicity" and "Underworld") decide to go rogue and set up camp on a sparsely populated tropical island, which suddenly becomes the world's newest nuclear-armed nation.
The trailer is tense and features some good action, but ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee also touted its "big-tent" qualities to reporters on Tuesday (May 15), saying it tested well with women and men. As for us, we're curious to see how much of a gray area Braugher's character lives in. He comes off as very principled at the beginning of the teaser,...

2012 hasn't even hit the halfway point, and already Warner Bros. is looking ahead to 2014, laying out dates for the Jackie Robinson Biopic 42 and the presently untitled Lego movie. THR reveals the release of the former is being timed with Major League Baseball's Jackie Robinson Day, meaning writer-director Brian Helgeland's 42 will make it's debut on April 12, 2013, to better commemorate the 66th anniversary of Robinson's first game as a Brooklyn Dodger. With its protagonist widely heralded as the man who broke professional baseball's color barrier, 42 will focus on Robinson's struggles as the first black Major Leaguer, as well as his bond with Dodgers' general manager and forward thinker Branch Rickey, who was instrumental in getting him on the team. Chadwick Boseman (Persons Unknown) will portray Robinson, while Harrison Ford has signed on to play Rickey. A Knight's Tale director Brian Helgeland directs.
