September. Labor Day, come and gone. Fall… theoretically. Back to school, back to theaters. That’s right: despite Hollywood’s ongoing labor shutdown, new product continues to leech out from the national Don’t-Miss Indies reserves, spilling its way onto screens in art houses cinemas worldwide. And yeah, a piping hot pumpkin-spice latte probably sounds like the last thing you want to consume after a long, hot day on the picket line. But you gotta admit: it’s nice to have the option.

Releases keep coming but talent is not comfortable promoting films, even indies, even if productions have waivers or don’t need them. Where that’s leading isn’t clear. “Who’s going to take the plunge first? We’ll see. The festivals will be the big test,” said one independent distribution exec.
From a moderate release like Jules, in nearly 800 theaters, to Sundance-premiering The Pod Generation, starring Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor on 100 screens, to French film Between Two Worlds with Juliette Binoche, opening on two screens this weekend, stars were not comfortable stepping out amid strikes. The WGA and AMPTP resume bargaining today for the first time in over three months. SAG-AFTRA remains in a standoff with studios over deteriorating pay and working conditions for its members.
“We got an interim agreement because [Jules] is an independent film. And yet, I think the actors…even within the interim agreement,...

Together, the Losers tuck in their bibs for the sloppiest plate of poundcake they’ve had in ages. Bellies full, they also discuss their favorite passages, least favorite jokes, and what may or may not be a cameo from our good friend Rf. Speaking of cameos, what’s Jack Reacher doing here? Man, this book is weird.

Plot: 1976, Brian de Palma directs Carrie, the first novel by Stephen King. Since, more than 50 directors adapted the master of horror’s books, in more than 80 films and series, making him now, the most adapted author still alive in the world.
Review: Almost as prominent as the books of Stephen King are the film adaptations of his work. Everyone has their favorites (and their not-so-favorites) and they’re prominent as can be. Whether it’s at the top of the Netflix charts or the latest Scream Factory release, there’s never been an easier way to watch his filmography. His adaptations are varied, adorning best and worst lists alike. Yet there’s a charm to most of them and a throughline that, despite the various filmmakers involved, feel part of a greater universe. So a documentary based on anything King-related feels like a no-brainer.

Another Panic Fest winds down, bringing a hybrid model that offered in-person screenings and virtual premieres including early screenings of Evil Dead Rise and Sisu.
The fest offered a slew of premieres, including nihilistic horrors like Beaten to Death and introspective docs like King on Screen.
While the packed schedule ensured we couldn’t catch it all, here’s a round-up of some of Panic Fest’s feature offerings this year.

The pair break into their holy grail: Franklin Hill, a large facility with a history. There, Brooke and Tanner encounter a volatile threat that holds them captive. Director Daphné Baiwir examines not the literary work of prolific author Stephen King but the vast body of ongoing adaptations of King’s work, beginning with 1976’s Carrie, in the documentary King on Screen. With over 80 films and TV series and counting, adapting his work by over 50 directors, the horror author remains one of the most adapted in the world. King on Screen assembles talking heads to examine what it is about his literary work that translates to the screen so well and why his audience remains captive decades later. However, the documentary’s feature format struggles to encapsulate its subject’s overwhelming scope.
Baiwir begins her examination with an extended opening sequence that sees her traversing a fictional realm packed with King references. She drives through a forest, emulating the opening of The Shining, until she arrives at a shop named after the short story “In the Tall Grass.
