This isn't horror... this is art.
rcuk-3651019 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story, cinematography, acting... everything is pure art. We endure an episode of exposition (post-position?) and it is an absolute rollercoaster. Somehow we feel love, hate, betrayal and a gut wrenching feeling of emptiness and sympathy all within the span of ~1 hour. Bly Manor is not a ghost story. It is a tragedy, and one at that which fills you with such an indescribable emotion that leaves you full of sorrow. It is perfectly... splendid.

Why is this not a 10/10, you may ask? A repeated cliffhanger which I don't necessarily appreciate.

Bly Manor and Hill House are in their own separate leagues, both dominating their respective narratives.

Modern Art.
yusufpiskin9 October 2020
After it was over, it prompted me to watch again. its cinematography is an enormous chapter. The choice of colors is great. musical scors have penetrated my soul. the team has created a complete art. a episode like the answer to the question of what is modern art.

Favorite Episode!

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a story within a story that finally shows and finishes tying all the knots together for further understanding. Kate Siegal as Viola and then the Lady of the Lake has such a powerful presence that can be felt to the core. I love the change of pace in this episode and all the answers coming out. This is excellent writing and acting. The casting could not be more on point, like not even a hair out of place. Marvelous

THANK YOU NETFLIX FOR TAKING THE RISK

Warning: Spoilers
We all are here because we fell in love with The Haunting of Hill House. The first three episodes of this season were a slow build. Then episode four rolls around and pieces start to fall into place. Fast forward to episode 8 in full throttle.

This season is a "horror" not for mainstream audiences, if you even want to call it horror. This season is about loss, grief, pain and sorrow. They could have easily tried to recreate the masterpiece that was The Haunting of Hill House but instead took a new approach, a very personal story driven approach that will take you to "hell", as our characters are experiencing, and back.

This episode takes a step back and gives us the true heart of the manor. Why there is so much sadness and a lingering restlessness that seeps through the house. Why angry spirits roam through the halls at night looking for resolution. All in beautiful black and white.

Mike, I will follow your career to the end. Amazing all around.

WORK OF ART
utkarshraj-987209 October 2020
This episode will go on as the one of the best episodes of the series. Watching it felt like reading a long forgotten Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic novel in an old melancholic library. The whole feel, the atmosphere of the old era, the storytelling of the two sisters, the reveal of the lady of the lake, all in one just makes up for perfection. And this episode marks the return of one of our most beloved Hill House characters. A great work of art I must say!

Best episode from this season
lucian140610 October 2020
This is clearly the best episode from the whole season, maybe is because of the old vibe. The script is on point, the characters are exceptionally played and the writing is superb. Kate did a wonderful role.

A beautifully written, narrated and visualised tale

This episode stands out. An absolutely captivating backstory, that patiently sucks you into the abandonment and rituals of its main character.

Best One So Far
MamadNobari9711 October 2020
This is the only episode in this season so far that made me say "holy ***t" at the end. What a story! I really enjoyed this episode and even more than I've enjoyed the previous ones because this one was just well put together and the story was better than the other one, and I know how everything ties to this one, but I'm just disappointed with what they could have done with this much potential in the prior episodes. Compared to Hill House this series doesn't have any element of horror and there more drama and romance than horror, but this episode showed how much potential there was to make an excellent horror like Hill House but they didn't. The plague doctor's ghost alone could've made the series more terrifying like the ghosts in Hill House and then when we would get to this episode we would see the origin of the ghost and the "gravity" of the manor and it would've made it more impactful. Otherwise, on it's own, this episode has a really good and engaging story with good visuals and twists, but it's a shame that the rest of the season wasn't as good as this one.

The best episode of the series
njboden29 October 2020
In this episode we learn about the history of the manor and it's inhabitants, so finally begin to get some sense of what's going on in this overlong series. It's also the most cringy accent-wise, others have said the same as me but I shall now be the first to elaborate on the specifics.

Narrator Jamie has a cot/caught/cart merger, so ends up saying 'walk' as 'wok' and as 'wook', like the first syllable of the word 'Wookiee', and does a similar thing with the word 'daughter'. She sometimes says words with a short 'o' sound with a strange vowel closer to 'oo' or 'aw' too. Also the inconsistent h-dropping and strange pauses before words beginning with an h sound, like she's thinking about whether to voice the h or not, is jarring.

Henry has a pin/pen merger, so says 'when' and 'generous' like 'win' and 'ginerous' and says 'petal' as 'pedal' and other Americans with smaller roles say some t's as d's and even use the occasional rhotic 'r'.

8.5 ?!!!???!??
paulchristechgod26 October 2020
This is simply spiteful considering that most reviewers here expect a hill house clone. This is a certified 9.4/10. This episode is the first of its kind like the one shot hill house episode. Masterful script, phenomenal actors and a collage of shockingly emotional scenes, a book literally came to life with the narration and it was perfect. For those saying that this is not a horror story should look at the show in a broader perspective. There is literally nothing scarier than human nature and this episode is a fine example of how love, however passionate and true, can morph into something monstrous (on the more introspective view)

This episode was masterful, truly perfectly splendid. It would have been given a 9.4 if viewers weren't looking for a hill house clone in the process

Episode 8

Warning: Spoilers
I was not expecting this kind of backstory. It felt a little forced, but it was intriguing and at least they tried to make sense of the Lady of the Lake.

Boring to me too + clichés
pshadkami22 October 2020
I do agree with who say it was boring and shouldn't be more than 15 minutes. Repeated phrases, actions and predictible end and clichés. This was the only episode I didn't like!

What a captivating story

Warning: Spoilers
It's probably the most fascinating episode of the whole season in my opinion : both "unique" and "timeless", I loved every minute of it. That was amazing to learn more about the origins of Bly Manor.

Viola's revenge.
Sleepin_Dragon17 August 2022
The chilling story of why Bly Manor functions, and operates the way it does. The final piece in the mystery of how and why is placed into the jigsaw puzzle.

I'm speechless, I, and I assume everyone else had two questions, who was the lady in the lake, why was Flora so afraid of her, and of course, what happened to Dani.

The latter will no doubt be explored in the series finale, but in the penultimate episode we're given a lavish treat, an origins story so to speak. It is decadently dark and devilishly delicious, the story of Viola, her family, her dreams, her desires, and ultimately her revenge.

An hour of jaw dropping visuals, this looked amazing, the black and white usage added to the atmosphere, it was suitably murky and mysterious, it just worked as a complete package. I loved the meaningful narration to, it helped to tell this twisted fable.

This series really has offered something different, it's like a love story that's crash landed into a gothic horror.

It's so good, that before I watch the final episode, I'm going to watch this a second time, merely to appreciated how awesome this was.

Terrific, 10/10.

Anything below 9 is a scam.
branik-6929413 October 2020
This episode is probably my favorite because it connects all the dots and made everything become meaningful. Great story narration and cinematography. It didn't fail at all to continue the tension built up from the 5th episode. It's a complete attention stealer. Mike Flanagan may not have directed it, but he had his signature all over.

Could it be any better?
aboalhyjaa10 October 2020
The answer is, No. its right that this show is a slow burner, but believe me its worth it. One of the best and definitely better than haunting of hill house.

Fine épisode, but...
the_real_Doc_Justice27 October 2020
Why the black and white? The whole episode is set in mid-17th century, but why the B&W? Oh I get it, back then they didn't have the technology to film in color, and in the 17th century their TV sets were probably all in b&w anyway.

The whole series is a huge, often confusing mix of flashbacks, reveries, fantasies, possessions - they even have a word for the inclusion of one of these into any other, "dream hopping" - so there in this very much linear episode, with lavish period costumes, constant narration and a whole different cast, we certainly didn't need the B&W to be reminded that all this happened centuries ago.

Plus, as always, HD digital b&w looks disgusting.

No, the B&W move was as manipulative as it was ludicrous.

Reminded me of the series Rome which I couldn't watch, as it annoyed me so much that all actors spoke Shakespeare-era English to, ya know, "sound old"

The right way to portray a believable evil in a story
kostasvasil4 January 2021
As F.F.Coppola did with Dracula once, the makers of the series were not afraid to dive deep in some serious cliches for the story. They knew that is not the story only that matters but it's the way you will tell it too. It's like as if you want to make a dress of victorian era and you make it with cheap materials and bad sewing. It will be a failure. But if you do it right then the result will be something classic. This episode is classic dark fairytale about human will vs unbeatable time and the tragic outcome of this. Well done for the directing and acting of this episode and the series in general.

I'm still totally confused, I still have not got a clue what's going on. I still like it, but I'm not sure why. I still like Flora it's great on toast. But that little bairn of the same name however is a childminders nightmare.

One thing is for sure, it's not scary.

Should have been 15 minutes...
ianarands-882-80945214 October 2020
Honestly far too long. Could have been explained in 15 minutes and it felt so dragged out. I think this is an example of where they have tried to make 'award-winning' TV, with poetic narrating, etc. but it was boring towards the end. Also, I just can't work out what the narrator's accent is supposed to be.
