Exclusive: With Hollywood scripted grinding to a halt, Apple TV+ is doubling down on natural history series.
The streamer has greenlit a duo of six-part docs titled Born to be Wild and Endangered Planet, Deadline can reveal, both of which carry urgent messages around the need to help save rare species on Earth.
Born to be Wild will follow endangered animals including a Savanna elephant calf, cheetahs and a moon bear cub, as they are brought up by humans with a view to returning to their homelands once they are ready.
Endangered Planet, meanwhile, will use cutting-edge technology to uncover insights into protecting precious species including the Gobi bear, Malayan tiger, Javan rhino, Caucasian leopard, Cross River gorilla and the North Atlantic right whale.
Apple TV+ has been keen on natural history since its inception and both series are being produced by UK indie Offspring Films, which also made Tom Hiddleston...

Cinema Eye Honors, an influential bellwether in the race for documentary awards, kicked off its 15th year with non-fiction award-winners announced at its annual Los Angeles lunch attended by many top filmmakers. Steve James’ five-part Chicago series “City So Real,” and Spike Lee’s filmed portrait of David Byrne’s Broadway show “American Utopia” lead the Cinema Eye Honors broadcast nominations list with three nods apiece. “David Byrne’s American Utopia” is one of five films up for Outstanding Broadcast Film, while “City So Real” joins five other series in the Nonfiction Series category. Both projects were nominated for Outstanding Broadcast Editing and Cinematography.
“It is notable that both of this year’s most nominated Broadcast entries are part of the creative legacy of Diane Weyermann,” said Cinema Eye Founding Director Aj Schnack. The beloved documentary veteran, who died last week, was an Executive Producer on both “City So Real” and “American Utopia.

Who’s afraid of the dark? Not the camera operators on Apple TV+ docuseries “Earth at Night in Color.” Though they probably should be.
Fascinated by the documentary series’ highly advanced night-vision technology, TheWrap bugged everyone associated with the streaming show to get us the best look possible at the transition from actual night to the bright result we see. They came through — a little after the debut, but through nonetheless.
Watch technology in action — and animals in never-before-seen night action — via the video above.
Using various combinations of astronomy-grade glass and low-light cameras, “Earth at Night” crews shot the full spectrum of light from (visible) white light to (invisible) infrared light. They then teamed up with a company that specializes in film restoration, Nulight Studios), and stripped out the pink and the red.
If none of this makes sense to you, readers, it doesn’t to us either. But...

Normally when shows want to do this sort of thing they rely on night vision, but the Earth at Night in Color process has […]
