Review from 41st Festival Du Nouveau Cinema (Montreal, 2012)
Is Vienna the world's cradle of the arts? Klimt, Schiele, Zweig, Mozart, Haydn, Strauss and Mahler are just some of its most famous past residents. The Austrian capital was long favoured by artists as a place of refuge and source of inspiration, but how is its reputation holding up today? Is it still a city where talents are discovered and nurtured? Does it continue to inspire? Focusing on the world of experimental music, trash punk and electronica, VINYL (Tales from the Vienna Underground) looks at daily life in the present (and even the future) of the history-rich city with its multitude of influences. The mosaic like documentary reveals the streets, clubs and soul of Vienna to the rhythmic sounds of vinyl-loving artists like Kruder & Dorfmeister and Patrick Pulsinger, celebrating their unique contribution and probing their strange relationship with the city. Screened at the Leeds and Karlovy Vary festivals, VINYL draws much of its energy from its stylized, upbeat art direction. British filmmaker Andrew Standen-Raz spent an entire year filming Vienna's nightlife to truly capture the spirit of a Europe caught between the weight of history and a desire to be free.
