After a long break from feature films, director Uwe Boll is back and ready to roll with his latest project, a crime drama about two mismatched New York City cops on their first day as partners.
“First Shift” stars Kristen Renton (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Gino Anthony Pesi (“Shades of Blue”) as the badge-carrying duo, she a transplant from Atlanta new to the Big Apple, he a jaded Brooklyn cop who prefers to work alone but forced to take on the new partner.
Set to start shooting in New York City next month, “First Shift” has moved ahead of two other projects Boll has in the works, a South Africa-set thriller and a feature about Prohibition-era federal agent Eliot Ness — famously played by Kevin Costner and Robert Stack in the 1987 film and the 1959 series “The Untouchables” — during the latter part of his career.

I absolutely love any film or TV programme set in prison. I am the proud owner of all 692 episodes of Prisoner Cell Block H on DVD boxsets. I have a real dread of ending up in prison – not because I commit crimes, but because I fear being framed or caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The idea of prison has captivated the cinematic imagination for decades and it has produced some very decent films – among them, some of the greatest films that have been made. These films deal with the misery of being confined all day, the deep friendships and bitter rivalry that can develop between prisoners, saintly or sadistic screws, the Darwinism of prison that only the strong survive. Prisons are definitely hotbeds of drama, cruelty and also transcendence.
I have listed 10 prison films that captured my imagination below. Please add your own favourites.

Anthology film The Profane Exhibit has been in the works for some time now, but things are moving along with casting news for the wrap-around along with more detailed descriptions of the various segments and quotes from a few directors. It's a lot of good stuff so prepare to be here awhile.
From the Press Release:
The producers of “The Profane Exhibit” are excited to announce that both Tony Todd (pictured) and Bai Ling have join the long-awaited horror anthology. They will be featured in the cast of "22 Rue des Martyrs," written by Ray Garton, which serves as the film's wrap-around segment.
David Bond and Manda Manuel are the architects of what is likely the most daring independent horror film project to date, both in concept and scope. Assembling an almost surreal collection of over 100 horror icons (directors, writers, actors, musicians, etc.), Bond's vision is to present the audience with...

Director Uwe Boll has completed his contribution to the upcoming horror anthology "The Profane Exhibit". The creepy and subversive short Basement, stars Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Tara Cardinal and horror icon Clint Howard.
David L Tamarin, General Counselor of Harbinger, attended the shoot and expressed his concern that the material might be too strong for mass consumption saying "The film is about evil that is absolutely real. There are no zombies, and the only monster is of the human variety. The film takes you to a very dark place. Viewers need to prepare themselves for this one."

Well now that director Uwe Boll has got all the "serious" filmmaking out of his system with the prison thriller Stoic, political drama Darfur, and yes, even the holocaust movie Auschwitz, it's time to get back to the other tasteless stuff that no one wants to see. This week a trailer for his new film Blubberella has hit the web, the star of which is described as "the first female fat superhero." Apparently she's part vampire and she kills nazis with blades, machine guns and rolling pins (not to mention her girth). Lindsay Hollister (Get Smart, Postal) stars in the somewhat degrading lead role, while Michael Paré (Seed, The Philadelphia Experiment) and, yes, Clint Howard also make appearances. This definitely seems more in the vein of Postal, which I know some people actually liked, but somehow I can't even muster any half-hearted ironic excitement for it. Whether or not it's...

Wow, this is troubling. The above screencap is from a teaser trailer for an upcoming Uwe Boll film entitled Auschwitz. In it, Uwe Boll plays a German officer guarding an Auschwitz gas chamber. Hit the jump to see the entire teaser for the film, but please note that it is strictly Nsfw. A site called Ninja Dixon (via Twitch) purports to have a quote from Boll describing his vision for the film: It's in the tradition of my movies Stoic, Darfur, Rampage, Tunnelrats, Heart of America...it shows Auschwitz as this what it was: a meatplant for humans...a death factory. For those who have no idea what he's talking about, Boll is referring to some of the other, rarely-seen films in his filmography. What follows is the teaser. Prepare to be disturbed. It feels like everyone on the internet is collectively already piling onto this one, and why shouldn't they?...

Wow, just when you think Uwe Boll has scraped the bottom of the barrel, here comes a teaser trailer for his latest film, Auschwitz. Yes, after bringing us the 9/11 satire Postal and Darfur, a film about the Darfur genocide, Boll goes for the big one with his latest opus – World War II.
Be warned – this trailer is very Nsfw and contains graphic images of death and stuff… Hell if you’ve seen those 80’s nasty-Nazi flicks from Italy etc., you know what to expect!
Uwe Boll has gone from crappy video game adaptations like Far Cry and Dungeon Siege, to the really rather good Seed, Stoic and Rampage. Just where Auschwitz sits remains to be seen. All I know is that he could have picked a better time to release a trailer about the Jewish genocide in World War II than now… It is Yom Kippur Rosh Hashanah after all.

Wow. I really don't even know what to say about this. Uwe Boll isn't really known for making good films, and he's made a lot of bad decisions in his career, but this is probably his worst.
Boll has made a film called Auschwitz in which he himself plays a Nazi officer who is guarding a gas chamber full of Jews in mid-execution... wow. Boll said in an interview:
It's in the tradition of my movies Stoic, Darfur, Rampage, Tunnelrats, Heart of America...it shows Auschwitz as this what it was: a meatplant for humans...a death factory.
It's one thing to make a movie about these events respectfully and tastefully like it's been done many times in the past. But it looks like Boll turned it into an exploitation type film. The trailer for the film looks like a grindhouse movie!
It's always been fun to joke around about...

I miss the Uwe Boll that made bad video game movies we could at the very least laugh at. I much prefer that Uwe Boll to the morose Uwe Boll who now mostly makes movies that wallow in human misery - prison rape, Vietnam savagery, Columbine-style massacres, African genocide - and now he's making a movie called Auschwitz graphically detailing the horrors that went on in that most notorious of Nazi concentration camps.
Twitch broke the news that Uwe Boll has made a movie about one of the greatest horrors in human history. Quoting Dr. Boll:
"It's in the tradition of my movies Stoic, Darfur, Rampage, Tunnel Rats, Heart of America...it shows Auschwitz as what it was: a meat plant for humans...a death factory."

Uwe Boll is still pumping out his movie, only now without big Hollywood stars or big budgets. His latest is a film called "Auschwitz" about the Nazi death camp. Speaking of the movie, Boll said: "It's in the tradition of my movies 'Stoic,' 'Darfur,' 'Rampage,' 'Tunnelrats,' 'Heart of America' ...it shows Auschwitz as this what it was: a meatplant for humans... a death factory." Today, we have a teaser trailer (not safe for work) for the movie, showing Boll wearing a Nazi uniform while he is standing outside of a gas chamber filled with naked people about to be murdered and then cremated. Watch it below. Teaser (Nsfw): If you cannot see the player, click here.

In a career marked by bad decisions, this is surely the worst. Uwe Boll has made a film titled Auschwitz in which he himself appears as a Nazi officer guarding a gas chamber full of Jews in mid-execution. I know this because it is in the teaser. Says Boll himself on the topic:
"It's in the tradition of my movies Stoic, Darfur, Rampage, Tunnelrats, Heart of America...it shows Auschwitz as this what it was: a meatplant for humans...a death factory"
Now, a serious treatment of Auschwitz is not a bad thing. But it is the sort of thing that needs to be done exactly right without a hint of exploitation. Which is pretty much impossible coming from a director who routinely jokes about funding his films via Nazi gold and fills his first teaser with images that come off feeling much more grindhouse than arthouse.
Throughout his career...

Fantasia [1] is one of the largest (if not the largest) genre film festival in North America. It takes place every summer in Montreal, Canada, and features all kinds of horror, sci-fi, and action films from all over the world, often with an emphasis on Asian cinema. This year is no different, with two of the biggest films being Takashi Miikie's Yatterman and Chan-wook Park's Thirst. Other fairly high profile selections include Michael Dougherty's long-delayed Trick'r'Treat, Uwe Boll's Stoic and Jaume Collet-Serra's Orphan. This year's festival takes place between July 9th and 29th. The full program schedule will be available online by the end of the week. Check out an extensive list of titles playing after the jump. While we wait for the schedule for Fantasia 2009 to be finalized, we did receive a couple of press release announcing the fest's line-up, and per usual, those of you who are planning to attend are in for one helluva genre extravaganza.
First up is a bit of news about the fest's extended schedule: Due to a veritable deluge of feature presentations, Fantasia is extending its 13th edition for two extra days and will therefore be taking place from July 9th to the 29th at Concordia University’s Hall Theatre. As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:

Poor Edward Furlong. A few weeks after Terminator Salvation hits theatres, continuing the successful franchise that he was once a part of, his latest film will go direct to DVD in the U.K. Directed by Uwe Boll, Stoic is based on the true story of an inmate at a German juvenile detention hall who was brutally tortured, forced to eat his own puke and hang himself by his cellmates. So this is what it has come to. Some have called this Boll's first attempt at serious filmmaking, but if you ask me, it's just another Postal, with Boll trying to get attention by using shock value alone. As expected, it looks terrible. However, Furlong is also starring in Boll's upcoming film, Darfur, which is apparently about American journalists confronting the atrocities in Darfur. Could that be the movie that will finally legitimize Boll as a director? Nah, I doubt it.

Uwe Boll is back and he has another film in the works. But unlike some of his previous work, "Stoic" is not based on a video game and actually looks like something worth watching. The trailer has been out for a while, but it is now in good quality. [via Twitch] Plot: In the claustrophobic confines of a jail cell, an inmate is discovered hanged. In the back-and-forth between the interrogation of his cellmates and the dehumanizing events that led to his death, the horrific truth about what really transpired reveals the duplicitous side of human nature. What if Uwe Boll made a movie that wasn't trash? That's not to say that Stoic, starring Edward Furlong as a prison inmate who is involved in the savage death of his cellmate, will actually be good, but does the new trailer for the movie actually suggest that Bol is...trying? gasp! Watch the clip after the jump. Stoic is one of three planned non-videogame projects for the combative director. His next two films could be Darfur (with Furlong and Kristanna Loken) and The Storm, with Lauren Holly and Luke Perry. But if this represents the tone Boll is planning to take with those two movies, I might be more actively frightened of the guy's future than his past. Which brings me back to the notion of Boll making a movie that isn't trash. Because Stoic looks trashy as hell, if only in a more 'artistic' fashion than his game movies.

Just a year ago, Edward Furlong signed on for some uber-charming, puke-eating, Uwe Boll torture with Stoic. I guess he just can't get enough of the man, because now he's leading the next Boll feature -- also mentioned in that news piece -- Janjaweed. But he's not only signing on -- he's also bringing a Terminator with him. Variety reports that he's going to star in the film, alongside Kristanna Loken and the bald-headed wonder Billy Zane.
The second Boll flick to get serious, if that's even possible, Janjaweed will look into the world of Sudan genocide, focusing on journalists who have to decide whether they want to stay and help the victims they see, or hit the road and report on their experiences. Like Stoic, the film has a treatment, but no script, so it'll be all improvisation.
