When "The Dick Van Dyke Show" kicked off its third season on September 25, 1963, the United States was in the midst of a societal transformation. The Civil Rights Movement's Birmingham campaign, which sought to desegregate the Alabama city's downtown businesses, was in full swing, and the images being transmitted to Americans' living rooms were ugly as hell. Birmingham's Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene "Bull" Connor countered peaceful protests with disgusting brutality. He ordered law enforcement to blast marching students with fire hoses; these children were also attacked by police dogs and the equally savage white locals, who, when they felt Connor's violent tactics weren't going far enough, bombed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's headquarters.
And then, one week prior to the show's season debut, a pack of racists killed four little girls when they blew up the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

More actors than ever are now stepping behind the camera to take a shot at directing. To me, they always end up falling into one of three categories. There are the ones who simply aren’t very good at it. There are the ones who wind up making a movie that’s A-okay, often because they’re more attuned to the nuances of guiding their fellow actors than they are to the grander artistic machinery of filmmaking. And then there’s the elite third category: those rare actors — Greta Gerwig, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper — who turn out to be born filmmakers.
To that hallowed company we can now add the name Jesse Eisenberg. “A Real Pain,” which he wrote, directed, and co-stars in, premiered yesterday at Sundance, and it’s a delight and a revelation — a deft, funny, heady, beautifully staged ramble of a road movie about two Jewish cousins,...

There’s a war going on inside many Adam Sandler movies and the loser is frequently the audience. Sandler may be an innately lovable performer, but his sense of humor is also abrasive and immature. So for every great Sandler comedy like “Happy Gilmore” or the overlooked “Hubie Halloween” — films that strike a satisfying balance between charm and adolescent weirdness — there are also films like “That’s My Boy” and “Jack and Jill,” where our affection for Sandler can’t quite compensate for an overwhelming cavalcade of mean-spirited “jokes” that confuse bullying with whimsy.
But when Sandler delves into the world of family-friendly animation he usually sets aside his vicious streak, so his childish humor and uncomplicated moralizing can shine through. You won’t find much of his immaturity in the “Hotel Transylvania” movies or in his new animated Netflix film “Leo” — which he co-wrote with Robert Smigel and Paul Sado...

Netflix took out its big red checkbook at the Cannes Film Festival, and bested the competition during what Deadline has referred to as an “old-style, all-night auction.” The prize was “May December,” the new drama from director Todd Haynes.
The film stars Natalie Portman as an actress visiting a woman upon whose life her next character is based. That person is played by Julianne Moore who achieved some tabloid notoriety after going to prison for seducing a 13-year-old boy when she was a grown woman. Now it is 20 years later, and she and the boy (now played as a man by Charles Melton) are still together, raising a family in Maine. (Sounds like a prestige version of the Adam Sandler flick “That’s My Boy.”)
The project was received with great praise at Cannes (it currently boasts a 93 percent score on ye olde Tomatometer) with many critics highlighting its comedic side.

Chris Rock may have turned down an invitation to present at the 95th annual Academy Awards earlier this month, but there was no way he was missing this.
On Sunday, he appeared in Washington, D.C. at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to celebrate his old buddy Adam Sandler. The star of “Billy Madison,” “Uncut Gems,” and the forthcoming “Murder Mystery 2” was being fêted as this year’s recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Rock came out and, upon seeing Paul Pelosi, referenced the bond the two shared—being physically attacked. Whereas the 82-year-old San Francisco businessman (and husband of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi) was nearly killed by a deranged lunatic, Rock was merely whapped across the face by Will Smith.
Anyway, Rock discussed how when he first encountered Sandler he was set up to dislike him. Sandler had...

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Salma Hayek Pinault Was Told She Was Too 'Sexy' For Comedy Until Adam Sandler's Grown Ups Came Along
As a producer, Adam Sandler has always managed to attract an impressive litany of talent. Although the films released through Sandler's studio, Happy Madison, regularly get terrible reviews, they tend to be very lucrative and high-profile actors keep coming back for more work. This may be because, as the rumor mill has it, Sandler is a relentlessly decent and kind human being that others love to work with. As such, Al Pacino can be seen in "Jack and Jill," Susan Sarandon appeared in "That's My Boy," and the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Aniston, and Winona Ryder have all played Sandler's wife or love interest in his movies.
In Dennis Dugan's 2010 film "Grown Ups," Salma Hayek Pinault plays Roxanne, a successful fashion designer, and the wife of a talent agent named Lenny (Sandler). "Grown Ups" is about how Lenny is still very close with the circle of...

While it may have been difficult to watch "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" get the axe from NBC, a comedy about a group of good people within the NYPD actually trying to do good for their community during a very real influx of injustice made their genuine efforts look all too much like a fantasy. Although the series has left us, when "B99" wanted to be funny, it had some of the most hilarious writing on television, and the stacked ensemble cast always came to play.
As with any great sitcom, however, some of the series most memorable moments involve the addition of a surprise guest star to the mix. "B99" has featured such a diverse roster as Lou Diamond Phillips, Patton Oswalt, Jenny Slate, and Sterling K. Brown, but it was in their first season where series creators/writers Dan Goor and Michael Schur brought out one of their funniest guest spots in Adam Sandler.

When Andy Samberg wrapped up his run on "Saturday Night Live," he figured he was off to go be a comedy movie star like many of his predecessors. He was one of the standouts on his era of "SNL," known for his hilarious rap parodies with his three-man group "The Lonely Island." His fans were excited to see him make the jump to the silver screen, although the transition from television star to film star is not always smooth.
Samberg already had some experience starring in feature films, but they hadn't been extremely successful. His first film, 2007's "Hot Rod," was largely panned at the time, although it has managed to garner a bit of a cult following in recent years for its humor and surprisingly dangerous stunts.
Upon jumping fully into films after his "SNL" exit in 2012, Samberg was once again performing a bit inconsistently. "Celeste and Jesse Forever" was generally well-received,...

Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

“The Breakfast Club” and “Pineapple Express,” both classics within their own genres, will be leaving Hulu in July, along with a host of other films. If you want to relive Judd Nelson’s performance as delinquent John Bender or the antics of Seth Rogen and James Franco, don’t forget to catch up on these flicks before July 31.
If you haven’t already celebrated Meryl Streep’s birthday by watching one of her arguably best performances in “The Devil Wears Prada,” stream this fashion comedy before it leaves Hulu this month as well. Thankfully you’ll still be able to stream this thinly-veiled critique of Vogue’s Anna Wintour on Prime Video. That’s all.
Other notable titles that won’t be available on the streaming service after July include “I Am Not Your Negro,” “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Easy A” and a slew of the Resident Evil films,...

Hulu has a diverse array of original content and library offerings for those looking to escape the oppressive summer heat this month. It starts out on the movie side of things with the Joey King-starring The Princess on July 1. From there, Hulu is releasing original films like The Bob’s Burgers Movie on July 12, documentary feature Aftershock on July 19, and the intriguing Zoey Deutch project Not Okay on July 29.

April is here and that means there’s a whole slew of new releases headed to Hulu to meet your streaming needs.
In the realm of original films, Hulu has the queer rom-com “Crush,” starring Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho, which debuts April 29. Meanwhile, new library arrivals this month include the Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sci-fi mind-bender “Looper,” both “Shrek” and “Shrek 2,” and all four films in “The Twilight Saga.”
April is also a big month for new TV shows on Hulu. Andrew Garfield’s hot streak continues with the FX drama “Under the Banner of Heaven,” which debuts exclusively on Hulu April 28. For reality TV fans, “The Kardashians” premieres on April 14. Hulu also has two franchise spinoff kids shows returning with Season 7 of “Madagascar: A Little Wild” on April 4 and Season 2 of “The Croods: Family Tree” on April 5.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

Milo Ventimiglia has been known as a favorite TV boyfriend from his time on “Gilmore Girls” and a favorite TV husband from his work on “This Is Us.” In between, there have been countless other memorable roles, including on “American Dreams” and “Heroes” and in the feature film “Rocky Balboa.” But even after all that, the actor-producer-director prefers to think of himself as a “blank slate.”

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

“The Wrong Missy” is a rom-com, but it’s really a ’90s Jim Carrey movie merged with one of those slob-goes-on-a-corporate-retreat comedies that has starred everyone from Bill Murray to Adam Sandler to Will Ferrell. Here’s what’s new about it: The hypomanic Jim Carrey figure is a woman — Missy, played by the wild-card comedian Lauren Lapkus, who in this movie is like a grenade of happy insanity tossed into the middle of every scene. Lapkus, who looks like a hellion version of Illeana Douglas, is best known for playing Susan Fischer on “Orange Is the New Black” and for one arc on “The Big Bang Theory” (she was also quite good in Zach Galifianakis’s “Between the Ferns”), and in “The Wrong Missy” she’s an antically wired, rubber-faced, this-is-your-brain-on-media satirist-anarchist.

Adam Sandler had major Oscar buzz for his role as a gambling addict spiraling out of control in “Uncut Gems,” winning an Independent Spirit Award and earning nominations from the Critics’ Choice and Gotham Awards, among other plaudits. Now he has a chance to win again at the infamous kudos that have honored him the most: the Razzies, where he’s currently up for the Redeemer Award.
The Redeemer Award was created by the Razzies in 2014 to honor an industry figure who came back from Razzie-winning bombs to achieve critical and industry acclaim. To date it has been awarded to Ben Affleck for his one-two punch of “Argo” and “Gone Girl” (2014), Sylvester Stallone for his Oscar-nominated comeback in “Creed” (2015), Mel Gibson for directing the Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016) and Melissa McCarthy for her Oscar-nominated performance in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (2018).

Pact comes as actor-comedian rides high on critical acclaim for Uncut Gems.
Netflix has struck another four-film renewal deal with Adam Sandler as the service unleashed a volley of larger-than-life statistics, claiming among other things that subscribers have spent two billion hours watching Sandler’s films since 2015.
The pact with Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions follows an original four-film deal in 2014 that was itself renewed for a further four in 2017.
The arrangement comes at a fortuitous time for the actor and comic as he rides high on critical acclaim for his award-winning role as a New York jeweller in A24’s Uncut Gems.

"Keep in mind folks - it is not going to be easy..." Paramount Pictures UK has released a new international trailer for the upcoming holiday comedy Instant Family, the latest movie by Sean Anders. Instant Family is inspired by the real events from the life of writer/director Sean Anders, telling the story of a couple that find themselves in over their heads when they adopt three children. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, Octavia Spencer, Tig Notaro, Isabela Moner, plus Margo Martindale. This really looks so bad, so bad, and so cliche, and painfully unfunny. I would much rather see a movie where they adopt kittens, not kids, than this crap. But that's me. Here's the new international trailer (+ poster) for Sean Anders' Instant Family, direct from YouTube: When Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) decide to start a family, they stumble into the world of foster ...

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for a new comedy called Instant Family. The movie comes from director Sean Anders and it stars Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne. They play a couple who want to start a family and they find themselves in over their heads when they bring in three foster children. The movie is actually based on the real-life events from the life of the director of the film.
When Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) decide to start a family, they stumble into the world of foster care adoption. They hope to take in one small child but when they meet three siblings, including a rebellious fifteen year old girl (Isabela Moner), they find themselves speeding from zero to three kids overnight. Now, Pete and Ellie must hilariously try to learn the ropes of instant parenthood in the hopes of becoming a family.

Surprise - it's a family! "You're just another white lady who wants to adopt charity orphans to make you feel good about yourself!" Paramount Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a comedy titled Instant Family, the latest movie by Sean Anders. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, Octavia Spencer, Tig Notaro, Isabela Moner, plus Margo Martindale. This looks like an amusing comedy, but the humor doesn't seem that smart to me.
