Former Amazon executive Leo Zimbrón has been appointed senior vice president of Spanish-language features and international co-productions at Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell’s 3Pas Studios.
“There are few executives with the levels of experience and success that Leo has garnered over the years. Eugenio and I have both worked with him previously and love what he will bring to 3pas as we continue to build and scale our business,” Odell said. “He has great creative instincts combined with a sharp business mind. I don’t want to call him a unicorn for Spanish-language content – but oops, I just did.”
Previously, Zimbrón served as head of local original movies for Latin America at Amazon Studios; he has worked on 40 projects for the company. In 2018, he held the position of director of fiction programming at EndemolShine Boomdog. Zimbrón also served as director of local production for Warner Bros. Pictures in Mexico from 2004 through 2010. Additionally,...

“La Reina del Sur” star Kate del Castillo is set to play the lead in “A Beautiful Lie,” a modern take in Spanish on Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina.”
Del Castillo will also executive produce the series out of her Cholawood Productions label, along with two other forces on the upscale Spanish-language TV scene, premium U.S. Spanish-language streaming platform Pantaya and Endemol Shine Boomdog, a division of Banijay Americas.
The six-part series co-production, based on the 2015 adaptation from Banijay-owned Endemol Shine Australia, will represent a modern retelling of Tolstoy’s celebrated novel, his first real novel by his own estimation and reckoned by many to be one of the greatest works of fiction ever written.
“A Beautiful Lie” is announced as an event series – a status that is almost inevitable in any major fiction starring Del Castillo and backed by companies of the ambition of Esb and Pantaya.

Endemol Shine Boomdog Taps Former Argos Exec Jerry Rodriguez as Head of Scripted Content (Exclusive)
Mexico City-based Endemol Shine Boomdog has tapped former Argos Media Group chief creative officer Jerry Rodriguez as their new head of scripted content and senior VP.
Rodriguez, an Emmy-winning TV producer and director of comedy and drama programming, had been with Argos since 1999 where he held various positions of responsibility through the years.
His appointment signals Endemol Shine Boomdog’s steadfast commitment to produce more fiction content in the years to come. Fiction content production is revving up across Latin America as more deep-pocketed and indie players are joining the fray.
In his new role, Rodriguez will lead Boomdog’s scripted team, which created such recent series as “Súbete a Mi Moto” (Amazon Prime), “Nicky Jam: El Ganador” (Netflix) and the recently announced comedy series “Todo por Lucy” (a re-imagined version of the classic comedic series “I Love Lucy”) for Amazon Prime. He replaces Leonardo Zimbron, who departed in mid-October.

In response to the growing demand for premium content across the Americas, Banijay Americas has launched a new unscripted production studio in Mexico with Emmy-nominated producer Marie Leguizamo serving as its managing director.
To be known as Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic, the new studio will be based in Mexico City where Leguizamo will be based part of the time as she shuttles between the offices in Los Angeles and Mexico City.
The new studio will mainly focus on unscripted original content in both English and Spanish for broadcast, cable and streamers in the Mexican and U.S. Hispanic markets. “With the Latinx market taking off and the proliferation of streamers and broadcasting networks launching their own streaming platforms, there is an increased demand for premium content,” Leguizamo told Variety. “It’s an incredibly exciting time in this space right now,” she said.

After swatting back the Covid-19 scourge to some extent, Puerto Rico opened its ports in June 2020. With the year-long curfew lifted in May this year, it’s been business as usual on this Caribbean island of roughly 3,500 square miles.
The capital of San Juan held its first live audience concert on June 26, 2021 with salsa icon Gilberto Santa Rosa playing to thousands at the Puerto Rico Convention Center for the first time since the pandemic closed it down. According to Asm Global regional manager Jorge Perez, 15 other concerts have been announced, with 10 already sold out.
International acts are also coming in as most U.S. mainland venues remain closed. Plunging cases and a relatively high vaccination rate (up to 70%) has brought some semblance of normality and a growing number of location shoots to the U.S. territory, albeit with health and safety protocols still in place.

In an unprecedented move, Kate del Castillo’s Cholawood and Fabrica de Cine’s Gaston Pavlovich, producer of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and “Silence,” have teamed up with Endemol Shine Boomdog (Esb) to co-produce “El Agente Mexicano” (“The Mexican Agent”).
The series is loosely based on the true story of Francisco García, a young photographer who is recruited by the CIA after inadvertently saving President Kennedy from an assassination attempt during a 1962 visit to Mexico.
In the first season, now being penned by Rodrigo Ordoñez, the naive photographer transforms into a genuinely ruthless spy. Carlos Bolado is attached to direct what promises to include elements of action, suspense and a good dose of romance. Esb’s head of scripted, Leo Zimbron oversees the production, which will likely run for multiple seasons.
In 2019, the Spanish-language division of Endemol Shine North America inked an overall development and production pact with Pavlovich.
