"There is a trace of truth in all fairy tales." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Troll, an epic new creature feature + disaster movie all in one. The latest offering from Norway in their disaster movie series - featuring The Wave, The Tunnel, The Quake, and The Burning Sea previously. (So why isn't this one called The Troll?) Deep in the Dovre mountain, something gigantic wakes up after a thousand years in captivity. The creature destroys everything in its path and quickly heads to Oslo. This one is directed by Roar Uthaug, director of Norway's The Wave and the 2018 Hollywood version of Tomb Raider. He went back to Norway to bring us this troll spectacle. Troll stars Ine Marie Wilmann as Nora, with Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, and Gard B. Eidsvold. Yeah this looks gnarly so far!! It definitely seems like this is Norway's Godzilla, also acting as...

Just weeks before he passed away, the legendary George A. Romero let it be known that he was seeking funding for a project called George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead, a film that would be directed by stunt coordinator Matt Birman, who served as second unit director on Romero’s Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. Five years have gone by and this project still hasn’t gotten off the ground, as Romero’s passing understandably halted any momentum it had. With the new episode of our video series Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie (formerly known as The Horror Movie That Almost Was), we’re looking into what might have been if Road of the Dead had been made. Hopefully it will be made someday.
Road of the Dead was scripted by Romero and Birman. Romero said the story...

When are horror movie characters going to learn that taunting evil spirits only causes trouble? For the sake of horror movies, probably never, as Dead Before Dawn 3D continues the tradition of gathering a group of non-believing high schoolers and thrusting them into a cursed scenario. At least writer Tim Doiron and director April Mullen attempted to have fun with the genre, literally making their own horror curse off the top of their head. Know what a “Zemon” is? Ever hear of a horror monster that attacks by giving you hickies? Want to see a hot cheerleader make out with the undead? No? Too bad.

Either David Zucker is trying to distract us from his latest turkey or we're all staring down the barrel of another Naked Gun movie
Trying to sell an inferior product to a sceptical public is no fun. Faced with this task, it's common for people in the movie business to try and distract us by claiming they are reviving a long-lost greatest hit.
To this day, Kiefer Sutherland's strategy for promoting his current series Touch is to bang on relentlessly about how he wants to make a 24 movie. Then there's Harrison Ford, who spent half a decade manfully propping up dreck such as Hollywood Homicide and Firewall by hinting at the return of Indiana Jones. The fact that Indiana Jones did eventually return, but as the world's most disappointing fridge-riding alien hunter, is simply an unfortunate by-product of this.
So there's a chance that David Zucker doesn't really want...

You know, this whole reviewing horror movies gig may seem like a gas, but truth be told, it’s a pretty tiring lifestyle. I love it, and wouldn’t trade it for the world, don’t get me wrong, but for every film that absolutely scares the piss out of me or floors me with creativity, I’ve got to deal with barely tolerable bottom of the barrel garbage instead of doing something productive towards humanity.
A Haunted House unfortunately is the latter in that scenario, attempting to turn found footage horror films on their head with edgy situational comedy, but instead relies on immature potty humor and sexual innuendoes thought up by child-like minds who probably still laugh at the word “duty” (hehehe), ignoring what real satirical fun could have been drawn from such pitiful source movies.

Over the last decade and a half, composer Ryan Shore has provided the music to a number of films across a wide range of dramas: from the suburban horror of the Jack Ketchum adaptation The Girl Next Door to the horror comedy Stan Helsing. Now he's trying his hand at composing for games, providing the score for next week's reboot of the Spy Hunter franchise at Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment.
I got some questions out to Shore by e-mail about his first stint working on a game, how hard WB wanted him to chase the Peter Gunn theme, and some of the perils and pleasures of composing for video games.

For the most part, the days of the classic monster movie are over. Modern moviegoing audiences are simply too sophisticated to quake at the sight of a shambling, dusty old mummy or a be-caped vampire with a distinctive widow's peak and a propensity for pronouncing his w's as v's. The werewolves, vampires, ghosts and zombies ("Frankensteins") of yesteryear still have enormous appeal, but more often as the subjects of parodies or comedies than of horror movies.
The latest movie to use classic monsters for laughs is acclaimed animator and director Genndy Tartakovsky's (Samurai Jack, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) upcoming 3-D family comedy, Hotel Transylvania, which revolves around a secret hotel run by Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) that caters to monsters who want a little getaway from torch-waving humans. I actually sat down to watch a movie entitled Stan Helsing which is a spoof on pretty much all of our favorite slashers, like Freddy, Michael, and Leatherface. I was thinking, "Oh this Should be a good laugh," but I was proven wrong. Instead of a good laugh, I got crude, rude, 6th grade sexual humor which I did not enjoy. Honestly, what happened to comedy without the gutter jokes? On top of all of this we have Michael Meyers looking like a chines…...

Can you tell whether a movie’s going to be awful without even watching it? The clues are there, if you know where to look…
No one sets out to make a terrible movie. Not even Michael Bay. In the long, collaborative process of filmmaking, everyone's trying to pull together in the hope that, once all the scenes have been shot and edited into a coherent sequence, the results of all their efforts will be rewarded with critical acclaim, audience approval and an influx of lovely cash.
Take a careful look over the history of cinema, though, and it's clear that there are certain things you should most definitely avoid as a filmmaker. To this end, we've dug deep through the movie archives to come up with eight signs that your movie is doomed to critical or financial failure...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.

Over the last few years we've seen a boon (in TV standards) in the number of gay teens on network and cable TV shows. To a list that includes Justin on Ugly Betty, Marshall on United States of Tara, Kurt on Glee, and um, teenager Teddy on 90210, we can add Ian Gallagher on the Showtime series Shameless.
Before we proceed to the first episode recap, let's take a quick look at the Gallagher family and the other colorful characters we'll be meeting along the way.

Frank (William H. Macy) is the family patriarch, a single dad of six kids who lives off his disability check, is oblivious to, well, almost everything, and when he was married no doubt spent every Christmas with his ex-wife performing their own version of "Fairytale in New York." Also bears a curious resemblance to The Grinch.

Reid Scott, Tim Simons and Matt Walsh have joined the cast of HBO's comedy pilot Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The Washington, D.C.-set project, from British comedian, writer and director Armando Iannucci, centers on former Senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) who becomes Vice President. Former My Boys co-star Scott will play Dan Egan, a DC legend. Simons will play Jonah who works in the President's office, and Walsh will play Mike, Meyer's spokesman. The trio join previously cast Anna Chlumsky. Reid, repped by Gersh and Impression Entertainment, has recurred heavily on Showtime's The Big C as Laura Linney's hot oncologist. After heavily recurring on CBS' Blue Bloods this season, Amy Carlson, who plays Donnie Wahlberg's wife, is poised to become a regular if the cop family drama is picked up for a second season, something that is widely expected. Carlson, repped by Domain and Principal Entertainment, will next be seen in Green Lantern.

Irvin Kershner dies at 87 years of Age!
The director of one of my favorite movies of all time has passed away today. The AP reports that Kershner, renowned for making the second Star Wars film, “The Empire Strikes Back”, has died in Los Angeles, his goddaughter Adriana Santini told the AP on Monday. He was 87 years old. Kershner, who besides the 1980 sci-fi epic also directed Sean Connery as James Bond in “Never Say Never Again” (1983) and Peter Wellerin “Robocop II” (1990), died at home after a long illness, said Santini, who lives in France. Born in Philadelphia in 1923, Kershner trained as a musician and in photography before starting making documentaries and then feature films.
Irvin was a graduate of the University of Southern California film school, and he was one of the first directors to be mentored under Roger Corman with his 1958 directorial debut Stakeout on Dope Street. Social alienation and...

Sad news comes to us this morning that comedy legend Leslie Nielsen has passed away from complications from pneumonia, that arose while he was fighting a staph affection. He was 84 years old.
Nielsen will likely be best remembered for his appearances in spoof TV and films, including Airplane!, Police Squad and The Naked Gun series. However his CV stretches all the way back to the 1950′s and includes plenty of dramatic roles, including Forbidden Planet, The Poseidon Adventure and Creepshow.
Undoubtedly the quality of his later work fell away a little, with the likes of Stan Helsing, Scary Movie 4 and Superhero Movie representing something of a fall from grace when compared the high water mark of The Naked Gun and Airplane! But nothing can diminish the impact, the goodwill, the comedy force of those earlier appearances, with favourite quotes/lines already permeating the Internet across Twitter and other sites.

What a terrible way to start the week. Comedy legend Leslie Nielsen passed away at a hospital near his home in Florida yesterday after fighting off a staph infection for the past week or so. He eventually died due to complications from pneumonia. He was 84 years old. Nielsen worked for over 60 years in TV and movies, first gaining attention as a serious actor in such films as Forbidden Planet and The Poseidon Adventure, before eventually becoming best known as the muse of David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, creators of the cult classic Police Squad! TV series and the popular Airplane and The Naked Gun films. He was still working right up until his death, most recently starring in the horror spoof Stan Helsing, with appearances in Spanish Movie, Stonerville and The Waterman Movie still forthcoming. As someone who grew up on The Naked Gun movies, I can honestly...

Comic actor Leslie Nielsen has died of complications from pneumonia. He was 84.
The Canadian star passed away surrounded by his family at a hospital near his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday.
A statement from the star's relatives reads, "We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television."
Nielsen trained with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a teenager before switching careers to pursue acting.
His first role came in 1956 when he appeared in crime drama Ransom! and he enjoyed huge success on both the big and small screen.
The star appeared in Airplane!, his first comedy movie, in 1980 and went on to become most famous for his roles in spoofs, including The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988 and two sequels in the 1990s.
In more recent years, the actor appeared in festive favourite Santa Who? and Scary Movie 3 and 4, with his last role being in 2009's Stan Helsing.
Nielsen picked up many top accolades during his six-decade long career - in 1988, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 2001 he was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. The following year he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
He is survived by his fourth wife Barbaree Earl and two children, Maura and Thea, from his second marriage to Alisande Ullman.

The world today just became a lot less funny. It's with the heaviest of hearts that we report the legendary Leslie Nielsen is no longer with us.
Though primarily known for his comedic work, Nielsen appeared in such horror film classics as Creepshow, Day of the Animals, and Prom Night; great genre TV shows such as "Thriller", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", and "Tales of Tomorrow"; and of course his many horror spoofs including Repossessed, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Scary Movie 3, and most recently Stan Helsing.
The news was broken today by Superstation Cjob out of Manitoba, who report that Nielsen has passed away in a hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia.
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to extend our deepest of condolences to all of Leslie's friends, family, and constituents. Thank you, sir, for all...

The website for the station has posted supposed audio of the news from Nielsen's nephew Doug Nielsen. I am unable to find a second confirmation of this report, but the news is being re-reported by big news publications. Update: We now have an official confirmation, a statement from his agent: We are sadden by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60 year career in motion pictures and television. Nielsen has appeared on the big and small screens for 55 years, appearing in a lot of popular spoof films like Airplane!, The Naked Gun Series, Spy Hard, the Scary Movie series, in the live-action adaptation of Mr. Magoo and...

Even FHM magazine is getting into the Halloween spirit, making 30 Days of Night: Dark Days (avilable now ) star Diora Baird their October cover girl. The issue features 45-pages of "Nocturnal Naughtiness" starring Baird and other "vampire vixens" from True Blood and Twilight. Baird is no stranger to the horror genre, she has also appeared in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Night of the Demons and the horror spoof Stan Helsing.

Diora Baird needs no introduction around these parts, really. She's been featured on the site before in our coverage for Stan Helsing and the upcoming Night of the Demons . But for those just making their introduction, Baird got her start in features with The Wedding Crashers . She later appeared, and made her horror debut, in Platinum Dunes' Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning . Besides Helsing and Demons , she'll next be seen in the 30 Days of Night sequel Dark Days , hitting DVD later this year. Previous Wicked Women: Yutte Stensgaard Mallika Sherawat Natalie Bassingthwaighte 5 Monstrous Mistresses Amber Heard...

Comedy and horror are an often ungainly mixture. The easy way out is to (subtly) satirize or (broadly) spoof the conventions and clichés of the horror genre, and the results are ... generally not all that impressive. (For every one Shaun of the Dead, there are at least three Stan Helsing(s).) But what's a lot more interesting is when a group of filmmakers can take a macabre tale of murder and mayhem ... and somehow still find the sunny absurdity of all those gruesome situations. Even more impressive is when they're able to translate all the terrors and the giggles onto the screen in one fun little package. Obviously I believe Glenn McQuaid's I Sell the Dead covers those bases nicely -- otherwise I...

We let you choose our 2009 Hottest Horror Babe and you awarded the honor to hotty Diora Baird. Although Baird did not really appear in a horror movie in 2009 -- lets be honest Stan Helsing shouldn't have counted -- she star in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006), and is in the upcoming Night of the Demons remake and 30 Days of Night: Dark Days in 2010. Baird beat out Sophie Monk, Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, Audrina Patridge, Bobbi Sue Luther, Caroline D’Amore, Krista Allen, Odette Yustman and Megan Fox. Baird is going to be busy in 2010 with at least six movies releasing, including the comedy Last Call, and hopefully we will see more of her in a few horror flicks in the near future!

Last year we saw the animated flop Delgo set a new record for lowest grossing movie opening in wide release ever [1]. It wasn't a big surprise considering the lack of marketing and the fact that the movie was produced independently, but still, not something to brag about either. Fast-forward to a year later, and over this past weekend we saw another similar box office record broken by the tepid horror spoof Transylmania. I guess it just goes to show that if you don't put "Movie" in the title, your spoof just ain't gonna sell. According to Box Office Mojo [2], Transylmania scored the lowest-grossing opening weekend for any movie playing in over 1,000 theatres with just $263,941. The previous record was held by the 1991 comedy Rich Girl (directed by the same guy responsible for Karla). Transylmania's per screen average was a lowly $262. Ouch. Unfortunately I think the writing was on the wall. When...

There are probably a lot of reasons why Stan Helsing shouldn't appear in the Coroner's Report. I mean, it's not scary and no one dies. It's a straight up comedy. No, worse than that, it's a parody. A spoof. We all know how well those generally end up being. But, like most true addicted horror fans, I'll take just about anything that promises to cater to my tastes. Horror jokes, monster parodies, and some boob shots. Stan Helsing gives us most of that and manages to be "surprisingly not terrible." Now, the movie is not good by any means, but I think it's watchable, unlike my fellow Rob Hunter. I must admit, some parts are down right terrible and awful and angering. But for some reason, I kind of enjoyed it. Stan Helsing followers out titular slacker video store employee, Stan Van Helsing, obviously in the lineage of the greatest of monster hunters. After...

There were so many crappy, cheesy, dumb, and otherwise worthy of an oh-no! DVDs this week that I can’t resist pointing them out. What is it about Halloween that inspires people to make really really stupid movies? In the vein of spoof cinema like Austin Powers and the Scary Movie franchise, Stan Helsing lampoons contemporary film audiences’ never-ending fascination with what makes our blood curdle. In the story, hapless video store clerk Stan Helsing (Steve Howey) and his friends must make a routine video delivery on Halloween night before going to a Halloween party. But when a chain of seemingly random mishaps strand Stan and the gang in Stormy Night Estates, Stan learns of his true destiny as a descendant of the legendary monster-hunter Van Helsing. With his motley band in tow – including his best friend Teddy (“Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson), he will battle evil in the...

Orphan
An "outwardly angelic little girl" gets adopted by a new family consisting of Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga, and then begins to unleash her hidden evilness. In his review, Peter Martin wrote that Orphan "is so bats*** crazy that it wears you down just enough to accept the lunacy and enjoy the movie for what it is: every parent's worst nightmare, writ large in childish crayon." Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

It's pretty slim pickings this week on DVD as there are only a few noteworthy releases, and fewer still that are even remotely related to Halloween. If you want horror, the only major releases available are the middling summer thriller Orphan, a collection of creepy animated shorts called Fear(s) of the Dark, and... the direct-to-dvd spoof Stan Helsing. Ugh. Other new releases include Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Woody Allen's Whatever Works starring Larry David, and the final (?) Battlestar Galactica Dtv feature, The Plan. The only thing that salvages the week is the long awaited release of Fred Dekker's cult classic Night of the Creeps on both DVD and Blu-ray! Definitely well worth checking out if you haven't seen it before. Will you be picking anything up this week? Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Orphan [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Whatever Works [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Nothing Like the Holidays [7] (DVD,...

It’s very easy to hate a movie like this. It might as well be part of the Scary Movie series, only it’s no where near as clever. Stan Helsing (Steve Howey) is a stoner, douche bag, video store clerk who happens to be the descendent of Van Helsing, the famous monster killer that took out Dracula. On Halloween night several of films most famous monsters come to kill him, but first Stan has to drop off some tapes to the owner of the video store’s mother. Along the way they run into a lot of creepy people, but eventually get lost and trapped in a small cursed town where monsters come out after midnight. Now Stan has to save the people of the town, his friends, and live up to his destiny. Oh and he has to do it in a very terrible comedy with almost no laughs.

Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. "Stargate" is now bowing on Blu-ray as a "15th Anniversary Edition," and it's one of a handful of notable releases during an otherwise forgettable DVD week.
"Stargate" finds Kurt Russell as a suicidal, no-nonsense military officer tasked to lead a group of battle-hardened veterans -- and soft-skinned ninny scientist James Spader -- through a newly discovered wormhole to an unknown destination. The other side winds up being a sandy desert planet whose native inhabitants have kept their human slaves in bondage under the guise of ancient Egypt. It was a wholly original concept,...

Another interview, another gorgeous blonde… It's easy to get jaded in this business, seeing as how you're exposed to so many photogenic people. Of course some of them turn out to have personalities. But then you get worse than jaded. Then you get bitter. Bitter that life or God or the Flying Spaghetti Monster has seen fit to bestow upon some lucky sons of bitches… Ahem. Sorry. Got a little sidetracked there. Anyway, last week I talked to actress Desi Lydic (pictured above to the left of Kenan Thompson, a.k.a. the luckiest person on earth) at the red carpet Hollywood premiere of her new film Stan Helsing, in which she plays Mia, an archetypal dumb blonde on her way to a Halloween party with some friends,...

October 27th is shaping up to be one of the best Tuesdays of the year for DVD and Blu-ray aficionados what with the release of Night of the Creeps, Orphan, Fear(s) of the Dark, and The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie). Throw in over-the-top cult favorite in the making Black Devil Doll, and your shopping cart is already pretty full.
And that doesn't even include the long awaited Dead Air starring genre fave Bill Moseley (who also has another film out this week, Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, with Danielle Harris), Graham Reznick's indie head-trip I Can See You, the promising Sauna from Finland, and horror spoof Stan Helsing (What can I say? It’s a harsh thing to say, but some people just aren’t funny. Bo Zenga is one of those people. He was an executive producer of the dreadful Scary Movie, and an executive producer and co-writer on the atrocious Snoop Dogg-starring Soul Plane. This time around, Zenga is a triple threat, serving as the writer/director and one of the producers of the flagrantly unfunny Stan Helsing, a Scary Movie ripoff/parody (opening today in New York and La) that is a crime against comedy and sets a new standard for adolescent, idiotic, witless humor. Sophie’S Choice has more laughs than this woebegone chaff. So do yourself a favor and skip this incompetent horror satire. No need to thank me, folks. I’m just doing my job.
Do I really have to describe the plot (what’s in a word?) of this film? I guess that’s part of my job too,...

This Halloween, in case you're not up for the actual scares of a new Saw movie or Trick 'r Treat on DVD, you have Stan Helsing, a movie advertised as "from a producer of Scary Movie" and taking the basic concept of the Epic Movie/Date Movie franchise and applying it to horror villains. No, I'm not really sure how it's actually different from the Scary Movie movies. But maybe you can figure it out by watching the six clips from below, showing off some of the goofier scenes of the movie, and not necessarily the bloodier ones. The previews make it seem like the plot revolves around the arrival of a bunch of different famous horror villains (Jason, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, all the rest) but most of the clips focus around your average bar hijinks. I'm betting on the usual mixed bag of horror parodies, but with the movie...
