Tko Holdings has merged the live event groups of its two combat sports leagues into the “Tko Live Events Strategy Team.”
Is the UFC about to follow WWE to a new streaming home? The latest move by the parent company of the two combat sports promotions leaves the door open for that particular question. Tko Holdings, which operates UFC and WWE, has decided to combine the live events groups of both into a single entity, which will be called the “Tko Live Events Strategy Team.” This will allow the company to more closely coordinate events from WWE and UFC, but it could also presage a move to Netflix for UFC events, as the world’s largest streamer recently struck a deal with WWE to air live episodes of “Raw” each week.
Key Details: WWE and UFC events will likely air on the same weekends thanks to the combination of the two live events groups.

The streamer dropped an update on its ad-supported numbers this week, even as data shows it lags behind other streamers in the U.S. in ad-supported signups.
Netflix wants to put any speculation about the success of its ad-supported Standard with Ads plan to rest. The world’s biggest streamer in terms of subscribers was already dominating headlines on Wednesday with the news that it had inked a deal to stream a select package of NFL games for each of the next three seasons, but it doubled down on its big week by taking the opportunity to announce that it had grown to 40 million ad-supported streaming customers around the world, a big gain over the last time it provided an update on its ad tier in January.

“Not a single animal benefits from this war,” sighs former G.W. Zoo manager Saff Saffery in , as he reflects on the conflict raging within America’s exotic animal business. Amid the docuseries’ clashes, chaos and comedy, it’s easy to lose sight of how perilous things are for the tiger species.
More tigers live in captivity than in the wild, where there are shockingly fewer than 4,000. Thanks to loss of habitat and poaching over the last century, several tiger subspecies are extinct. The few that do remain are endangered, some critically.
It’s understandable to feel helpless about this situation, but there are some little and not-so-little things we can do to help these big cats. Perhaps, if enough of us feel compelled to turn compassion into action after watching the series, some animals might benefit from those Tiger King wars after all.
Here are some suggestions...

Filmmakers are warning that a recent ruling in a copyright suit against Netflix over its “Tiger King” docuseries could restrict the use of video clips in documentaries, and upset a long-held understanding of what constitutes “fair use.”
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Denver, ruled in March that the use of a 66-second excerpt from a funeral video was not “transformative” under the Copyright Act. The three-judge panel remanded the case to a lower court to determine if Netflix violated the copyright of Tim Sepi, the videographer who shot the scene.
Netflix has petitioned the court to reconsider its decision, and has been joined by the Motion Picture Association, the International Documentary Association, Film Independent, and a host of media law professors in raising alarms about the potential chilling effect on non-fiction storytelling.

“Baby Reindeer” mania has already swept the U.K., and the word-of-mouth export continues to make waves across the U.S., hence our belated review about an incredibly devastating and twisting series that is so much more than you initially expected.
There’s a natural tendency in most savvy viewers to predict how events might unfold in any film or televised event. For years, Netflix established itself as a contender in the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction sweepstakes with the murder-for-hire animal park drama (“Tiger King”) or plunges into the darkest realms of internet video (“Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer”).

During the quarantine era of the Covid-19 pandemic, major cultural events were shaped by an internet connection. Many remember the weeks' worth of discussions after watching Netflix's "Tiger King" shortly after the world started shutting down, and the hours spent toiling away in virtual worlds like "Animal Crossing." But for horror fans, one of the biggest events happened in 2021, when Netflix released a trilogy of horror films based on R.L. Stine's "Fear Street" novels, with a new film released three Fridays in a row. Director Leigh Janiak created "Fear Street Part One: 1994," "Fear Street Part Two: 1978," and "Fear Street Part Three: 1666" based on Stine's books but without directly following any specific storyline, and they instantly became must-watch movies.

It’s been nearly a year since Netflix stopped offering the Basic plan to new customers, but existing users could still access it.
The takeover of Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan is continuing. One report in April suggested that the streamer had 7 million customers on the tier in the United States and Canada alone, and Netflix has made plenty of moves to try and enhance the plan’s attractiveness in the eyes of customers since its November 2022 launch. The streamer has already sunset its cheapest ad-free plan for new subscribers, but existing customers of the Basic plan have been allowed to keep it until now. A new report from Streaming Better indicates that Netflix has been warning some subscribers that they are about to lose access to their Basic plan, as the streamer tries to get as many viewers to opt for the ad-supported option as possible.

Content warning: This article discusses topics that may be triggering to some readers, including stalking, grooming, and sexual assault.
"Baby Reindeer" is the latest Netflix phenomenon, the must-see limited series that people can't stop talking about. Starring Scottish comedian Richard Gadd and based on his award-winning play of the same name, "Baby Reindeer" is a dramatized look at real events Gadd endured when he was stalked by a woman he refers to as "Martha," and how his prior, unresolved history with sexual assault directly influenced how he responded to the situation. Given that Gadd is essentially reliving his trauma, "Baby Reindeer" differs from the majority of "based on true events" adaptations in that the person telling the story was actually there. There's no mystery to solve because the show's survivor is the one shaping the narrative.

The second season (or “Part”) of The Jinx is arriving on HBO nine years after the conclusion of the first and, wholly coincidentally, right on the eve of the Jewish observance of Passover.
This timing has me thinking of “Dayenu,” the festive song in which we recite the various miracles of the Exodus, one at a time and each followed by the declaration of “Dayenu,” meaning “It would have been enough.” So… Leading us out of Egypt (“Dayenu!”), parting the Red Sea (“Dayenu!”), giving us the Torah (“Dayenu!”) and so on.
When it comes to the first six episodes of The Jinx, it goes something like: If it had just been an exceptionally well-produced depiction of a twisty, unresolved series of murders tied to real estate mogul Robert Durst? Dayenu! (Or it would have been enough for a generally enthusiastic review.)

Rightly or wrongly, streaming stocks have been judged by subscriber numbers. It’s not a complete picture of a company’s business, but it’s a key metric for judging the health of a platform. That’s why Netflix surprised investors by announcing it will no longer provide subscriber numbers starting next year.
In its letter to investors, Netflix said, “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential. But now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (Fcf). We are also developing new revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different business impact.

Many documentary filmmakers want their work on the big screen and not small. So, what gives? Why isn’t that happening?
One could argue that we haven’t seen a doc boom in cinemas since 2018 which served up such breakouts as Won’t You Be My Neighbor ($22.8M), Three Identical Strangers ($12.3M) and Rbg ($14M). The pandemic is partially to blame as audiences have savored non-fiction stories on streaming, i.e. the Netflix series, Tiger King.
“It’s not that it doesn’t work theatrically,” explained Lionsgate EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh who was part of the SXSW session “How to Tell True Stories: Narrative vs. Documentary”.
“It’s becoming more competitive to get people’s attention because there is so much documentary product out there that can be watched through streamers and other ways,” Koh added.

Customers can still watch Netflix through their Apple TV device, but they cannot pay their bill through Apple any longer.
Apple Pay is a highly convenient way for customers to pay for their subscriptions all on one bill, instead of having to keep track of myriad expenses every month. According to Forbes, the average American consumer now has 4.5 streaming subscriptions, and remembering when those services bill each month can be a real hassle. Unfortunately for such customers, Netflix has begun informing subscribers who are still using Apple to pay for their account that they will no longer be able to do so.
Netflix has not allowed new or returning subscribers to sign up via Apple for some time, but existing customers could still use Apple to pay for their account. Third-party platforms often take a percentage of all streaming signups that occur through their digital store. Netflix has declined to...

The WWE Network streaming service will shutter at the end of 2024, as all of its content will move to Netflix outside the United States.
The WWE is officially coming to the world’s largest streaming service. Earlier this week, Netflix and the WWE agreed to an international deal that will see “Monday Night Raw” air live on Netflix every week for the next decade in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other territories — although, the “Monday Night” part of the name might need to be changed. Outside the U.S., the deal also means that WWE titles like “SmackDown,” “Nxt” and live premium events will also move to Netflix, but where does that leave the on-demand WWE Network?

Observers can likely count Netflix out when it comes to pursuit of legacy media companies like Paramount. What about BET+ or AMC+?
Speculation over the future of Paramount was reignited this week, as news spread that it would lay off hundreds of workers across the company next month. There have been several parties with rumored interest in acquiring a controlling stake in Paramount Global’s parent company National Amusements, Inc., but according to information shared by Netflix officials this week, analysts shouldn’t expect the company to make any moves toward acquiring Paramount.
Netflix stated flatly this week that it has no interest in acquiring any linear TV assets. That position would discount Netflix from acquiring Paramount Global, NBCUniversal, ESPN, or any other company with TV channels. Data released by the streamer in a shareholders letter provides some clues as to where it can make more meaningful expansions.
As rival streaming executives looked on with envy, Netflix unveiled its fourth quarter 2023 earnings report on Tuesday. The company revealed it had more than 260 million subscribers around the world, but in a letter to shareholders it also announced which countries could potentially see a greater investment of time and money as Netflix tries to increase its subscriber base and viewership share in them.
In markets like Mexico, Spain, Brazil, and Poland, streaming makes up less than 25% of total TV viewing. As the strongest streaming brand in the world, Netflix is in an excellent position to increase penetration in these countries. The streamer is already expanding the amount of titles it produces internationally, and subscribers should expect that to continue. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com Where Can Netflix Go Next?...

In a letter to shareholders this week, Netflix said its ad-supported tier now accounts for 40% of all sign-ups in territories where it’s available.
There’s a veritable advertising revolution going on at Netflix. The streamer, which for years resisted the addition of ads to any of its streaming plans, has done a complete turnaround, and in a letter to shareholders this week Netflix touted its Standard with Ads plan as having increased its subscriber base by 70% in both the third and fourth quarters of 2023. Standard with Ads is a big part of the reason that Netflix was able to net an additional 13.12 million subscribers in Q4 of last year, and the company has plans to ensure its continued adoption by customers.

Buckle up to pay even more, Netflix subscribers. In its Q4 shareholder letter, the company all but assured another price hike in the near future.
The company’s letter included this sentence: “As we invest in and improve Netflix, we’ll occasionally ask our members to pay a little extra to reflect those improvements, which in turn helps drive the positive flywheel of additional investment to further improve and grow our service.”
Netflix last raised prices in October of 2023. In July of last year, the company's CFO said Netflix wouldn't raise prices until mid-2024.
Netflix may feel it has the momentum to apply another price hike since it just had its best quarter of domestic subscriber growth since the pandemic-fueled leap of Q2 2020. Netflix added nearly 3 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada to end 2023.
The company said it’s continuing to refine its strategy regarding pricing, advertising, and account-sharing.

The world’s largest streamer is saying ‘No, thank you’ to creating dedicated software for Apple’s new reality-altering device.
Apple released some new details about its new Vision Pro headset earlier this week. As part of that release, the company revealed which streaming services would be available to watch on the device, but conspicuously absent from the list was Netflix. A new report from Bloomberg indicates that purchasers of the Apple Vision Pro shouldn’t expect to see an app from world’s largest streamer on their device any time soon, either.
Netflix will not create a new app for the Vision Pro, nor will it allow Apple to use the iPad version of the app. The company appears to be waiting to see if the Vision Pro will be a success before creating a new app for the device. The Vision Pro goes on sale Feb. 2 and retails...

Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan got off to a slow start, but it now seems to be a runaway freight train.
When Netflix takes the stage just about anywhere, it’s a good bet that the company is about to make some news. That was true at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where the world’s largest streamer took the opportunity to announce that its ad-supported Standard with Ads plan has grown by 8 million customers in just the last two months.
Netflix’s total ad-supported customer base now stands at 23 million. Viewers were slow to adopt the plan, which was first introduced in November 2022. The onset of ad-supported plans at other streamers has likely aided Netflix in gaining subscribers on the plan. Mobile games have long been a focus of growth for Netflix, but the streamer might be on the verge of changing its philosophy.
Netflix has put a substantial amount of resources into its mobile games division over the past few years with the assumption that if the world’s largest streaming company could also become a leading platform for video games, it would be even more indispensable to consumers than it already is. However, a recent report by the Wall Street Journal indicates that a pivot may be coming that would change the way that Netflix approaches video games moving forward. The company has long resisted putting ads and in-app purchases into its games as a way to distinguish it from other mobile game providers, but just as it did by introducing ads to shows and movies, the streaming giant might reconsider this stance.

As 2024 approaches, streamers are hoping for more profits, bigger sports slates, and maybe even some awards hardware.
There are just a few days left in 2023! It’s been a transformative and corrective year in the streaming industry, as platforms shifted gears in response to market pressures to seek out profitability. Some companies were more successful than others, and now each must decide what their goals in 2024 will be based on what happened in 2023.
What will top streaming services be aiming for in 2024? Will they be realistic goals, or will they be pie-in-the-sky glimmers that only have a small chance of coming true?

Since it first started distributing movies and shows over the internet in 2007, Netflix has enjoyed an enormous head start over its competitors. Rival entertainment companies got sucked into an all-out arms race in 2019 and 2020 as the pandemic closed theaters and people around the globe kicked back in front of their streaming devices. But as entertainment companies struggle mightily to make their streamers profitable, they’re turning to their old rival for help. And now, Disney is letting Netflix stream some of its shows. With this retreat, Netflix now looks invincible over the long haul.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that Netflix could be ready to expand its sports streaming portfolio beyond a golf tournament.
Walking before running is one thing, but Netflix seemingly wants to make sure it has crawling down before even attempting to stand on two legs in the live sports streaming game. The world’s largest streaming service recently announced details for itsplans to host a live golf tournament featuring celebrities from its shows “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing,” but so far that is the only sports content the service has attempted to offer.
Netflix is reportedly mulling the addition of a live boxing match featuring YouTuber Jake Paul. The proposed boxing match would be Netflix’s second live sporting event ever. Netflix executives have resisted sports streaming in the past, but these events could signal a change in company thinking. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.

The Eras Tour has been harder to get tickets for than just about any concert event in recent memory. Taylor Swift certainly knows how to pack them in, and the tour has become so popular that the singer has created a movie version of Eras concerts so fans who missed out on the chance to see her live can still enjoy the show.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” brings the cultural phenomenon to life on screen. The film features every song from the tour’s standard set list, with the exceptions of “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer,” “Invisible String,” “Cardigan” and “‘Tis the Damn Season.” The movie is only available in theaters, but you can click here to get tickets.

If you’re still sharing your Netflix account with others, restrictions aimed at stopping you from doing will make their way to you eventually.
The consternation generated by the news that Netflix would begin stopping its users from logging into the service using shared passwords was palpable. But despite some catastrophic predictions on how many customers would depart from Netflix if the ability to share passwords was restricted, the company added 8.7 million new subscribers in the third quarter of 2023, and seemingly hasn’t slowed down one iota.
Netflix first began to crack down on password sharing in the United States in May. The company saw more former sharers sign up for an ad-free plan than the ad-supported plan initially, but that trend has started to turn around. The rollout of password-sharing rules has come in stages, so customers who have not been affected yet will be sooner or later. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.

On Wednesday, the world’s largest streaming service reported an impressive quarterly increase in global subscribers, picking up over 8.75 million customers. However, buried deep in its letter to shareholders was news that we had anticipated, but nonetheless were not looking forward to; Netflix is raising its prices on some of its plans. For customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and France, effectively immediately, their Basic and Premium plans will be increasing in price.
Netflix continues to push customers to its ad-supported plan by making cheaper ad-free options more expensive. The ad-free Basic plan was discontinued in July, but members on the plan were allowed to keep it, but prices will increase anyway. Prices will increase by $2 and $3 respectively, depending on the plan. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com
For domestic subscribers, Netflix’s ad-supported ($6.99) and Standard ($15.49) plans will not see a price adjustment, but the Basic plan will rise from...

Once users watch three episodes with ads in a row, they’ll be rewarded with a fourth ad-free episode.
Netflix really, Really wants you on its ad-supported plan. The world’s biggest streaming platform sees its Standard with Ads tier as one of its primary profit drivers in the coming years, but before that can happen it has to have many more customers signed up to that particular tier.
Netflix is adding a new feature to Standard with Ads that allows users to watch one ad-free episode once they’ve seen three ad-supported ones. The feature is intended to reward binge-watching; a recent survey found that 66% of streaming users identify as binge viewers. Netflix’s Standard with Ads has accounted for 28-30% of new signups this past quarter, but the plan has a long way to go. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com Binge Rewards

New data released by Antenna shows that Netflix will be celebrating when it unveils its third quarter subscriber numbers this week.
The onset of October means that streaming platforms around the industry will soon be reporting how many customers they’ve added in the past 12 months. Disney is likely feeling the strain, as the pressure is on to show that it has done something to stem three straight quarters of subscriber losses.
Netflix is expected to officially release its third-quarter earnings report on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Antenna is projecting the company will see a healthy subscriber increase. Users are more frequently opting for Netflix’s ad-supported plan.
Netflix isn’t experiencing those kinds of anxieties, at least not this week. The world’s largest streamer is expected to remain the world’s largest streamer by a comfortable margin if data released by Antenna ahead of Netflix’s quarterly earnings report is any indication.
