The limited series Painkiller is a tragedy, period. It may have some absurdist elements, like a sing-along at an OxyContin convention in Miami or giant stuffed plushies with Purdue Pharma branding, but the show’s ending is bleak, as the series shines a sobering light on those affected by America’s opioid crisis –– the aftershocks of which are still felt today.
“We set out to make this show about the [opioid] epidemic, what caused it, why it was allowed to go on and, and why it’s very unlikely that there will ever be real justice — at least the justice that’s deserved,” executive producer Eric Newman told Tudum.
Here, Tudum unpacks just how far the pharmaceutical industrial complex went in the series, and how, as executive producer and director Pete Berg puts it, this “distorted, capitalistic nightmare” that churns pills...

Exclusive: Netflix and the Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground prevailed in a mid-six-figure spec deal for Dyersville, a fact-based Chicago-set crime thriller. Will Hettinger wrote the script, and Grant Singer is near a deal to direct, so this is all moving on a fast track.
Dyersville became a hot spec that had five buyers circling. They asked to keep the plot under wraps, but I can report it is set in the Obamas’ old stomping grounds, in Chicago. Higher Ground’s Vinnie Malhotra and Mark Write will be the producers.
Hettinger has been a staff writer on the Netflix series Painkiller and the Starz series Hunting Wives. His script The Final Score made The Black List, but this is his first feature sale.
Higher Ground is coming off Leave the World Behind and Rustin.

One of the Nordic region’s biggest providers of premium series, Copenhagen-based REinvent International Sales, will make a splash at this week’s Canneseries festival and MipTV market.
For the second consecutive year, the sales, financing and packaging banner has two titles in competition: the Danish drama thriller “Dark Horse”, due to world premiere in the main competition, and the short form Swedish dramedy entry “Painkiller”, which initially bowed at the Göteborg Film Festival.
“Last year we had the Norwegian political drama “Power Play” which won best series, and the Swedish romantic dramedy “Out of Touch” in the short form section. Canneseries is a great platform to get the hype going on your series,” commented Helene Aurø, REinvent sales and marketing director.
Turning on this year’s competition candidates, Aurø points out that both “Dark Horse” and “Painkiller” deal with mother/daughter relationships.

More than five decades into their career, Judas Priest have always been one of metal’s most reliably great bands, likely because the responsibility they feel to the genre weighs just as heavily as the music they make. They never want to let down their fans, the “heavy metal maniacs,” as lead shrieker Rob Halford dubbed them long ago, even as they’ve pressed forward in the face of adversity in recent years. Dorit Kemsley is working hard for that Season 14 diamond and bringing all the smoke for Queen B, Kyle Richards.
It’s not looking hopeful for a reconciliation between the once-closed friends because Dorit just slammed the brunette beauty as “manipulative” and “calculated.”
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star shared a lengthy text message Kyle conveniently sent her the night before the reunion — after not speaking to her for months.
The text has since gone public, and fans are chiming in on the moment that will play out in its entirety at the reunion.
However, critics are not the only ones, who have something to say about Kyle’s message.
Her friend Erika Jayne was the first cast member that Dorit told about the exchange as the Rhobh reunion teaser shows the two women discussing it in their dressing room.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards have wrapped, and the full SAG winners list shows momentum for Lily Gladstone in the Best Actress race at the Oscars — as well as for “Oppenheimer” and its very possible march toward Best Picture.
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” led the nominations when they were announced January 10 with four each. “Oppenheimer” ended up winning the most of any film, with three prizes: Best Cast (the top prize), Best Actor Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jr. “Barbie” went home empty-handed.
Lily Gladstone won Best Actress for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone for “Poor Things,” who won the prize at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers,” and has pretty much swept that category at every awards show this season.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills viewers have enjoyed Erika Jayne this season, but she angered fans in the recent episode.
Erika thinks she’s owed an apology from her castmates after winning a legal battle in court over a pair of $750,000 earrings.
However, viewers are now blasting the Painkiller singer for not understanding why she was questioned by her co-stars about the jewelry in the first place.
The 51-year-old is entangled in the ongoing legal drama involving her estranged husband, Tom Girardi.
People — her co-stars included — wanted her to give up the earrings so that the money could go towards paying back the victims of Tom’s fraudulent schemes.
However, Erika refused to give them up – until a motion was filed for her to turn over the pricey piece of jewelry.
As things played out in court, the judge ruled that the trustee overseeing Tom’s estate “failed to...

Chosen by Variety as one of 10 Euro Directors to Watch at 2013’s Karlovy Vary’ with her debut “Eat Sleep Die,” a Venice Critics Week winner, Sweden’s Gabriela Pichler confirmed her unique voice with her sophomore pic “Amateurs”, voted best Nordic film at the 2018 Göteborg Film Festival. At this year’s 47th festival, she makes her comeback with “Painkiller,” her first foray into long-form scripted format, co-written with her life partner Johan Lundborg, who also serves as Dp and editor.
The six-part series is a feisty socially-anchored comedy, which delves into complex mother-daughter dynamics and gentrification in Göteborg, driving class divides.
As explained by the writing duo, the starting point for the story was Pichler’s personal experience of juggling between her work as a celebrated rising Swedish filmmaker, and the reality of her own mother’s struggle with chronic pain.

The awards show circuit continues after the 2024 Golden Globes recently honored last year’s achievements, which included big wins for Emma Stone, Paul Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, Christopher Nolan and Barbie. Mere days after the Golden Globes, Emmy nominees Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae have announced the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards via Instagram. After the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards also serve as a sort of barometer for what the winners of the Academy Awards are predicted to be.
According to Variety, “the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will stream live globally on Netflix for the first time this year as part of their multi-year deal.” They have also posted the complete list of TV and movie nominations, which feature awards for stunt ensembles in a television series and a motion picture. You can view the list of Screen Actors Guild nominations for 2024 below.

If you had “Succession” receiving the most SAG Awards TV nominations on your 2024 Bingo card, you’d be right! The HBO family series dominates this year’s announcement with a whopping five bids, more than any other television show that aired or streamed within the 2023 calendar year of eligibility. “Succession” receives a drama ensemble nom plus individual citations for Sarah Snook, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen. (Fun fact: it has still never won a SAG Award for a solo actor.)
Three contenders follow in the nominations with four apiece: “The Bear,” “The Last of Us” and “Ted Lasso.” FX’s program about a Chicago restaurant has notices for comedy ensemble, Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri; HBO’s zombie apocalypse series is recognized for drama ensemble, stunts, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey; and Apple TV+’s soccer laffer scores for comedy ensemble, Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham.

The Screen Actors Guild has announced the nominations for its 30th annual SAG Awards. On the film side, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” the two films that ruled over the summer box office, lead nominations with four nods each, including ensemble cast. In the TV categories, “Succession” led with five nominations, followed by comedies “The Bear” and “Ted Lasso,” and fellow HBO drama “The Last of Us,” each receiving four nods.
The nominations were announced January 10 by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, reuniting via Instagram Live after starring together in the 2020 Netflix comedy “The Lovebirds.” Prior to that, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher kicked off the virtual announcement with an introduction, and SAG Awards committee members Jason George and Woody Schultz followed with the nominations for stunt ensembles.
The 2024 SAG Awards will take place on February 24, streaming live on Netflix, its new network home.

The 2024 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday morning (December 11), leaving several projected heavy-hitters for the upcoming Oscars off the slate. The most notable rejections were “The Color Purple,” which missed for Best Film Comedy/Musical and one of the movie’s stars, Taraji P. Henson, who was left off the ballot for Best Film Supporting Actress. The movie did manage to squeak out nominations for Fantasia Barrino in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress and Danielle Brooks for Best Film Supporting Actress.
Other major contenders that won’t compete include Best Film Drama contenders “Saltburn” and “The Iron Claw”, the screenplays for “American Fiction” and “The Holdovers” and the latter’s director, Alexander Payne.

As we close in on the 2024 Golden Globe nominations, we’re predicting that, for the first time in its four-season history, HBO’s “Succession” will dominate on the TV side. Our official odds have the recently concluded drama series reaping a whopping six bids, matching the incredible single-year showings of just two other post-2010 programs: “Big Little Lies” (2018) and “The Crown” (2021).
In a close second (and leading the comedy pack) is Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” with five expected mentions. We’re anticipating four bids apiece for the laffers “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” and “Ted Lasso” as well as for period drama “The Crown” on its sixth and final outing.
Among telefilms and limited series, we forecast a good morning for “Beef” and “Daisy Jones & the Six,” each of which are poised to compete in three categories. Also tipped to pull off a triple play are continuing...

Although most past recipients of the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress SAG Award triumphed after being Emmy-nominated for the same performances, a few – including three of the last five – competed for the two prizes in the opposite order. That subgroup’s newest member is “George & Tammy” star Jessica Chastain, who is presently awaiting the result of her Emmy bid for the biographical series. As it happens, the list of performers aiming to supplant her as said SAG Award category’s reigning champion mainly consists of women who were eligible for the 75th Emmys (taking place in January 2024), but that does not apply to Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), who could end up benefiting from her unique ability to emulate Chastain’s rare achievement.

Fighting for streaming residuals has been a hard-fought sticking point for the writers and actors negotiations, but bottom-line results of the new bonus threshold may be limited.
Less than 5 percent of Netflix originals in 2022 “would have triggered performance bonuses under the new contract between the Writers Guild of America and major studios,” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw wrote on Sunday. The new deal between the WGA and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) pays out performance bonuses if at least 20 percent of a streaming platform’s U.S. users consume a new original film or TV series within its first 90 days.
Shaw’s rate of 5 percent or less accounts for all Netflix original titles, he wrote — including foreign-language, animated, and unscripted programs that aren’t governed by the WGA deal. So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

Hollywood has never shied away from provocative subject matter like the opioid epidemic, and that goes double for a major streamer like Netflix, which has already released "Painkiller" and "The Fall of the House of the Usher" in short order. If there's a way to tell a new story about fascinating but morally compromised characters selling everything but their souls in order to make a quick buck off of the misery of others, well, you can bet that a filmmaker will find it. Honestly, even if there wasn't a new way to do it, somebody would try anyway. "Pain Hustlers" lands somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, judging by the rather mixed reception to the movie. /Film's Rafael Motamayor reviewed the film and ended up on the more negative side of the equation, saying that, "At its best, the film is just a nice time spent watching Emily Blunt...

A new Netflix movie is taking a look at the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. Pain Hustlers stars Emily Blunt and Chris Evans as Liza and Pete, a pair of sales reps pushing a powerful new opioid medication called Lonafen to doctors. Though the drug was designed for cancer patients, the greedy company has decided to market the product more widely, with deadly results. Blunt’s character, a single mom desperate to pay for her daughter’s medical treatment, initially is an eager participant in the scheme until she realizes the harm she’s causing.
Liza, Pete, and Zanna Therapeutics boss Jack Neel (Andy Garcia) are all fictional characters. But Pain Hustlers is inspired by a real story of corporate greed and malfeasance.

Plot: After a chance encounter with a fast-talking pharma rep (Chris Evans), a desperate single mother (Emily Blunt) goes to work for a pharmaceutical start-up that’s pushing a revolutionary new drug.
Review: Pain Hustlers suffers because it comes out hot on the heels of two excellent limited series about the opioid epidemic, Hulu’s Dopesick and Netflix’s Painkiller. Those shows took a macro approach to the epidemic, focusing on the Sackler family, the marketing of oxycontin, and its effect on the public. They did a pretty good job delivering a nuanced version of the story. Smartly, David Yates’ Pain Hustlers (also from Netflix) doesn’t focus on Oxycontin, with it being loosely based on what happened with a company called Insys. Still, it tells its story in a straightforward, good guys and bad guys way that makes for comforting viewing but doesn’t compare to other, much better depictions of the opioid epidemic.

The opioid crisis in America, caused by greedy and selfish pharmaceuticals, is now the focus of several Netflix series and films. After the success of Painkiller, which highlighted the rise and fall of Purdue Pharma, David Yates’ direction has brought forth a semi-fictional story of a pharmaceutical company that spreads a fentanyl addiction among people in the name of treating cancer. Pain Hustlers revolves around Liza Drake, a woman who is desperately looking for any means to earn a reputation, respect, and money in the sales world. Her character amazes us, defined by her distinctive attitude, composed demeanor, and optimistic outlook on life. Let’s dive into her character journey to know her better.

One year after coming up short on her first individual SAG Awards outing against Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) is 2024’s clear Best TV Comedy Actress frontrunner, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. This time, she could face a direct challenge from “The Bear” cast member Ayo Edebiri, who 90% of our participating users believe will overcome her 2023 solo snub. If this very likely showdown does come to fruition, the two potential nominees will make SAG Awards history as the first pair of Black actresses to ever face off in an individual continuing series category.
Both Brunson and Edebiri’s new SAG Award bids would come for their work on their shows’ second seasons. From 1969 to 2011, K.K. Downing was a member of Judas Priest, and alongside Glenn Tipton made up one of metal’s all-time greatest guitar tandems. The pair helped power such classic albums as British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance, and Painkiller, along with headbanging anthems like “Breaking the Law,” “Living After Midnight,” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.”
After Downing’s exit, Priest carried on with guitarist Richie Faulkner. But when it was announced in 2018 that Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and would no longer tour (aside from special appearances), it seemingly opened the door for Downing to return. But ultimately, the vacated slot went to Andy Sneap, the co-producer of Priest’s 2018 album, Firepower.
Despite a brief performance with Judas Priest at the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, Downing says the door is now shut on a reunion.

The house of Usher as it appears in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a far cry from the "mansion of gloom" described in Edgar Allan Poe's original story. It definitely has the "gloom" part down, but it's only a humble house at the opposite end of the street from a true mansion, where the young Roderick and Madeline Usher's biological father lives but refuses to acknowledge them. Whereas Poe told the story of an "old money" family, fallen from greatness due to an implied family tradition of inbreeding, Flanagan tells a new money fable of the Ushers' meteoric rise and their grisly downfall.
The series folds in story elements and Easter eggs from many of Poe's works, ranging from the most famous to the more obscure. Of equal influence is the real-life scandal of the Sackler family, whose crimes have been...

Medical horror has always been central to the mysterious Edgar Allan Poe short story, "The Fall of the House of Usher." It opens when an unnamed narrator receives a letter from the ill Roderick Usher, whose sister, Madeline is experiencing cataleptic trances from an illness of her own. When she eventually passes, Roderick fears her body will be analyzed for medical study and embalmed. Instead of giving her over for an autopsy, Roderick decides to keep her in the family tomb for two weeks. Alas, in typical Poe fashion, it is revealed at the end that Madeline was entombed before she had actually passed.
In Mike Flanagan's "The Fall of the House of Usher," the titular family's relationship with medicine is generational. In this updated story, Roderick and Madeline's mother Eliza worked for a pharmaceutical company while also being a devout woman who believed God could heal better than any medicine.

Among the glut of programming that has either documented the ills of the pharmaceutical industry (Hulu’s “Dopesick” and Netflix’s “Painkiller”) or the rotted core of the uber rich one wouldn’t necessarily expect another iteration to come from Netflix’s horror TV impresario Mike Flanagan. Even more surprising would be that such an allegory would be grafted onto the stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
It’s a bit of a curious and bold gambit on paper — a limited series that loosely bases each episode off of a different Poe work (its title comes from a Poe story of the same name), all of which adds up to a big pharma horror parable — but who better to pull it off than Flanagan? The series creator, who co-wrote the show and directs half of its episodes, has become a sturdy (and incredibly popular) hand behind a consistent stream of ambitious...

Are we all addicted to stories of people flinging pills and looking to make a profit in the name of Pharma? It would seem so, as we've seen various movies, series and documentaries on the subject. Several of those, including the recent Painkiller have been on Netflix, and the streaming service is tackling similar territory with comedy drama Pain Hustlers, starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans. You can find the most recent trailer below…
This latest look at the movie, directed by :a[Harry Potter]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/harry-potter-deathly-hallows-part-2-review/' } veteran David Yates, initially focuses more on Blunt's Liza Drake, who is in a financial bind having lost her home and her car and trying to provide for her daughter (Chloe Coleman).
A chance meeting with pharmaceutical sales rep Pete Brenner (Evans) puts her on an upwards trajectory economically but dubious path ethically as she becomes...

AC/DC played their first show in seven years on Saturday night (October 7th) at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The evening also featured a set by fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Judas Priest.
For this Power Trip gig, AC/DC’s lineup featured classic members Brian Johnson (vocals), Angus Young (lead guitar), and Cliff Williams (bass) alongside Stevie Young (rhythm guitar) and drummer Matt Laug.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden set the bar high at Power Trip the night before, but AC/DC were up to the challenge, showing no signs of rust as they ripped into “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” marking the first time they’ve ever kicked off a set with the Highway to Hell song.
From there, the 24-song set featured one classic after another, with the very next tune being the iconic “Back in Black,” followed by other favorites like “Thunderstruck,...

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).
Possible Golden Globes newcomer Fishback stars on Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm” as Dre Greene, a mentally unstable young woman whose unhealthy obsession with a Beyoncé-esque pop star drives a wedge between her and her foster sister,...

Paramount+ just released the trailer for Painkiller: The Tylenol Murders, a five-part documentary series that takes a deep dive into the 1982 Tylenol murders. The docuseries premieres on October 10, 2023 and examines the tragic deaths of seven people in Chicago after they purchased bottles that contained pills laced with poison.
The seven innocent victims ranged from 12 (Mary Kellerman) to 35 years old. Three of the unfortunate victims were members of the same family.
Nurse Helen Jensen discovered the thread between the victims, and it was determined someone had opened the packaging, injected captures with cyanide, and then resealed the bottles. The discovery forced stores across the U.S. to remove Tylenol from their shelves, and Johnson & Johnson initiated a recall of all Tylenol capsules.
The FBI and multiple law enforcement agencies investigated, but the person or persons responsible was never apprehended.

If you’re a person with simmering rage directed at the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma for their alleged contributions to the opioid epidemic, chronicles like Hulu’s Dopesick and Netflix’s Painkiller face a major stumbling block when it comes to delivering resolution: When one side of the ledger has hundreds of thousands of deaths and the other has a few settlements and some bankruptcy filings, reality can be a real bummer. No such restrictions confine Mike Flanagan in his latest spooky-season Netflix limited series.
Half creative writing project tied to a freshman seminar on Edgar Allan Poe, half horror-filled karmic catharsis, Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a bluntly entertaining exercise. It’s easily the most specifically topical of Flanagan’s Netflix minis, fueled by an often palpable anger. But that anger frequently gets in the way of the thematic richness that gave The Haunting of Hill House,...

The newest Star Wars series on Disney+, Ahsoka, delivered a sizable viewing audience during its opening week. Suits continued its summer-long run as the top overall title.
The first two episodes of Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson as the title character, had 829 million minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 21-27. With a total running time of 100 minutes over the two installments, that translates to about 8.29 million complete showings of the two. (Disney+ said the first episode alone gathered the equivalent of 14 million complete plays worldwide over its first five days.)
Ahsoka’s 829 million minutes of viewing ranks second among Disney+ Star Wars shows for their series premiere weeks, behind the 1.03 billion for Obi-Wan Kenobi in May 2022. It was the No. 2 original series for the week, behind Netflix’s British import Who Is Erin Carter?, which drew 1.04 billion minutes of viewing. New seasons of The Ultimatum...
