Demons, witches, and devils have been around in religion and life for nearly as long as people have been around. This extends into movies as since the very beginning of motion pictures, we have attempted to capture the fears of these types of fears on film in a number of ways. Most of the media we see on it is built out from existing ideas to create a new narrative that looks to capture the interests of the general public enough to make a profit or base a movie on it. While many people know both the book and movie of The Exorcist, something like The Rite (watch it Here) that more or less came and went in the early 2010s proves that it also has an interesting story to tell. Whether or not you believe in the religious supernatural events found in either the book or the movie, it...

Ahead of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, rumors erupted that a secret David Lynch project would be heading to the event. While such gossip may not have borne any fruit whatsoever (and was actually shot down by Lynch himself), The Hollywood Reporter can confirm that the legendary filmmaker will be having some involvement in the 2023 edition of the festival.
The David Lynch Foundation is set to host a panel discussion about film music at the American Pavilion, having teamed up with Irish entertainment and tech start-up Xavatar and Planet X Studios.
Entitled “The Art of Movie Music,” the hour-long talk — to take place on May 21 and followed by a two-hour cocktail party and fundraiser for the Foundation — will feature a panel made up of ’60s music icon Donovan, with virtual appearances by Lynch and rapper-actor Redman. The Pope’s Exorcist draws basis from the books An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, penned by Catholic priest and exorcist Gabriele Amorth. Screenwriters Michael Petroni (The Rite) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Unholy), along with director Julius Avery (Overlord), eschew the biopic approach when exploring Amorth’s tenure as an exorcist in favor of a by-the-books horror movie. Russell Crowe is the sole saving grace in this diluted and often silly entry in exorcism horror.
Avery’s latest introduces his rebellious Gabriel Amorth (Crowe) in a rural village in 1987. Amorth walks in with remarkable confidence and jovial mischief in his eyes as he quickly exposes a case of psychosis, not possession, leaving the local priest splattered in blood and the family shocked. Amorth barely has time to cuckoo at nuns and get scolded by higher-ups at the Vatican before he’s summoned to a crumbling abbey in Spain.

Sunday Update: Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has made history with the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated title at $377.5M. Of that plumb pazzo result, an estimated $172.8M comes from the international box office. Wahoo!, indeed.
The movie just took off with audiences — and four-quad, to boot. We’re now looking at a potential $1B worldwide grosser. Fans are loving it, and it’s expected to have strong legs with no clear competition in the marketplace going forward.
We listed global milestones yesterday (see below), but it bears repeating that this is the biggest worldwide opening for animation ever, and natch of 2023; best for Illumination ever; biggest video game adaptation ever, and, in just the first frame is fully the 4th biggest Hollywood animation globally since the pandemic began (each of those top four spots belong to a Uni movie). On the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.
Even Catholics in high places, it turns out, have a sense of humor: You needn’t wait for the “work of fiction” disclaimer in the closing credits to discern that “The Pope’s Exorcist” is ripely fantastical trash, inspired by Amorth’s work in much the same way that SunnyD is inspired by Florida oranges,...

The Wicker Man
Blu ray
Viavision [Imprint]
1973 / 1.85 : 1 / 93 Min.
Starring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland
Written by Anthony Shaffer
Directed by Robin Hardy
While away on assignment in Scotland, a melancholy company man experiences a life-changing, and possibly supernatural, transformation. This tale of magic and metamorphosis isn’t Bill Forsyth’s utopian Local Hero but Robin Hardy’s apocalyptic The Wicker Man, the story of a god-fearing detective named Neil Howie. The lonesome hot shot of Forsyth’s film is given a new lease on life but for Howie there’s no such reward—just a whiff of fire and brimstone as his dreams go up in smoke.
The title card reads “Anthony Shaffer’s The Wicker Man“, suggesting that the famed playwright was a more than equal partner along alongside Hardy and the film’s producer, Peter Snell. Shaffer based his screenplay on David Pinner’s Rituals, a...

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.
The good news is you won’t have to squeeze in any binge-watching – there are no series leaving HBO Max this month, just films. Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.

If you were being pursued by a wily killer in the woods, could you survive? Don’t look for me alive, that’s for certain; at the first sign of trouble I would be tangled up in a bush, or drown in five inches of water. Let’s not even start on the deadly wildlife, chopping wood, making a fire, or the inconvenience of being slain on holidays. That last point is a bit of a sticky one for the protagonists of Rituals (1977), a Canadian spin on Deliverance that would probably pair better with Jeff Lieberman’s Just Before Dawn (1981). And if you’ve seen that intense shocker, you’ll know you’re in good company.
Released in Canada in July, a full year before the States, Rituals received some good notices but performed poorly with audiences, and was quickly forgotten. But time has a path to redemption, especially for films that deserve that reappreciation.

Damson Idris stars as a disgraced drone pilot who is sent into a deadly militarized zone where he finds himself working for an undercover android officer, played by Anthony Mackie, and is tasked to locate a doomsday device before the insurgents do. This has the look of Edge of Tomorrow, but without the time loop. There are, however, some slick robots and various sci-fi aspects that give it a different vibe. Also starring Enzo Cilenti, Emily Beecham, Michael Kelly, and Pilou Asbæk. This looks even better than the first trailer, I'm honestly quite excited to watch this! Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

Rutger Hauer, the actor who played the villainous Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner and so many other awesome roles in his acting career has passed away.
It’s being reported that he passed on July 19th in the Netherlands after a long illness, and he was 75 years old. According to Deadline, his funeral was held today.
Hauer was a great and super entertaining actor that has left behind a legacy of genre films that also include Ladyhawke, The Hitcher, Blind Fury, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Sin City, Batman Begins, Hobo With a Shotgun, The Rite, and a lot more.
One of my favorite films that he starred in was Blind Fury, where he played a badass and skilled blind Vietnam vet with a sword. If you haven’t seen that movie, you’ve got to put it on your list of movies to see!

The Word of God is good. It is also very lucrative. Ever since the days of silent films, the Bible has been big business in Hollywood. And as we travel ever further into 'peak television’s' new era of streaming, that one constant remains. However, the officially greenlit series Messiah, at least on its premise, promises to be a challenging new take on faith-based content.
First announced as in-development last spring, Netflix officially ordered a 10-episode series of Messiah yesterday, which is likely to be a controversial and highly publicised series when it eventually drops. Movies 10-1
10. Videodrome (1983) directed by David Cronenberg
In David Cronenberg’s world, sex hurts so good; it’s innately disgusting and primeval but at the same time beautiful and becoming. (Kind of like sex in the real world, when you think about it.) Bodies degenerate and mental states corrode under the influence of lust, and yet something new is engendered by the collision of bodies, bodily fluids, the ripping of flesh and the mangling of organs. Through the carrion of ugly comes the attractive flesh, the new flesh. Videodrome, as Jonathan Lethem once quipped, remains Cronenberg’s most penetrative film; he creates a world at once rooted in modernity circa 1983–a world afraid of the advent of television usurping our humanity, over-stimulated times ushering in the end times–and existing in a timeless, placeless vacuum. It’s vast and claustrophobic, prescient and paranoid, of the same lineage as early James Cameron...

Dead Man Down was a refreshing, quiet thriller, while Passion was erotic and sensual, and coming up later this year she has Child 44 and The Drop, both films with Tom Hardy. Mikael Hafstrom, who helmed last year's silly prison escape thriller Escape Plan with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone will direct Unlocked, and we just hope it's better than previous efforts like The Rite and 1408.
