Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.
Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.
The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

Hello everyone! The summer season is pretty much upon us now, but don’t expect the horror or sci-fi genre offerings to slow down at all during this time of the year because June’s slate of VOD and Digital releases is jam-packed throughout the entire month. So, if you’re looking for a good excuse (or many excuses) to stay inside and beat the heat, this rundown has got you covered.
Hulu is debuting the latest seasons of both The Orville and Only Murders in the Building this month, and Shudder is keeping busy with several exclusive films heading to their platforms, too, including Phil Tippett’s Mad God, which I highly recommend because it blew me away when I saw it last year, and Mickey Keating’s Offseason is pretty darned good, too. Marcus Dunstan’s Unhuman is being released on June 3rd (same day as Rob Savage...

Eric B. Fleischman’s Defiant Studios has landed film slate financing from Solis Studios and Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Variety has learned.
Defiant, behind genre titles like “The Knocking” (pictured above during production) and “Offseason,” will make multiple features under the partnership, with the first to shoot this summer.
This is the first significant move by Solis, the film division of the media and tech collective led by former “One Tree Hill” star Brett Claywell and Brendan de Kauwe. The company’s goal is to create “deeper layers of engagement between content and the communities who consume it,” their mission statement says, including the utilization of blockchain technology. Solis also counts Polygon Studios as a technology partner.

Offseason, the new film from writer/director Mickey Keating opens with Ava Aldrich addressing the viewer in a scene that recalls Marianna Hill’s warning at the start of Messiah of Evil.
That film involved a woman’s trip to a touristy coastal town in search of her missing and presumed dead father, Offseason opens with Marie Aldrich heading to the touristy island where Ava is buried. It seems her grave was desecrated and her presence is required to remedy it.
As she and George arrive their trip is almost derailed. It seems the drawbridge to the island is raised during the offseason and the Bridge Man only relents and lowers it after finding out why she’s there. He also warns them that after tomorrow it’ll be locked until spring.

When your dementia-riddled mother starts screaming about nightmares following her and demons crawling out from the water, it doesn’t matter how lucid she appeared beforehand. You tell her what she wants to hear, try to make her as calm and comfortable as possible, and await the inevitable. That’s what Marie Aldrich (Jocelin Donahue) did when Ava’s (Melora Walters) clear eyes and confident voice spun an outlandish tale surrounding the isolated island where she grew up and left without ever going back. She heard her mother’s pleas to ensure no part of her body returned there in death and assured her with a promise that none ever would. Except she had no control. Ava’s will demanded she receive an island burial and the law guaranteed it.

No two Mickey Keating films are alike; the filmmaker consistently explores different corners of horror and influences with every production. From neo-western horror to psychological to sci-fi horror and beyond, Keating seems uninterested in retreading the same ground. His latest, Offseason, takes on cosmic horror. "There's something wrong with this place..." Rlje Films and Shudder have unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Offseason, which originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, later stopping by a few other fests. The film is made by an indie filmmaker named Mickey Keating, his seventh feature film so far. After receiving a mysterious letter about her mother's grave, a woman travels to a desolate island town to find out what's wrong and soon becomes trapped in an inescapable nightmare. Starring Jocelin Donahue as Marie, along with Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake, Melora Walters, and Jeremy Gardner. This trailer gives away a lot of the film, but I guess they're trying anything to get people interested somehow. I caught this during SXSW and I was not the biggest fan. At least it's a thrilling trailer. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Mickey Keating's Offseason,...

Within the DNA for Defiant Studios, the production banner behind Terry Crews’ 2020 hit “John Henry” and last month’s “Phobias,” are two companies: You’ve definitely heard of the scrappy, microbudget mentality that has made Blumhouse Productions a juggernaut. But you may have forgotten about Insurge, a one-time division of Paramount born with the mission to incubate young, first-time filmmakers. Defiant Studios producer Eric B. Fleischman is a veteran of both companies, and he and partner Maurice Fadida have quietly found success by embracing a model that is built around small-budget genre films from emerging talent and slate financing that mitigates risk and allows for taking more chances on talent. That approach is already paying off since Defiant was the only studio with two movies that premiered at last month’s SXSW: Elle Callahan’s “Witch Hunt” and Mickey Keating’s “Offseason,” which sold to Rlje Films and Shudder just this week.

After receiving a mysterious letter, a woman travels to her family's remote ancestral home somewhere in New England and finds herself trapped by an ancient force in Mickey Keating's latest mumblegore effort, Offseason. A kind of Eldritch-esque survival horror that feels equally inspired by Lovecraft and video game aesthetics (in a good way), Offseason proves to be an effective diversion, even if it doesn't really add up to much in the end, despite its apocalyptic intentions. Marie Aldrich receives a letter regarding the defacement of her mother's grave, the upstroke being that her presence is requested to deal with the damage. She and her partner, a rather dour and ineffectual George (Joe Swanberg), make the trek out to an isolated island,...

Where Mickey Keating’s filmography has often lent itself to easily identifiable cinematic inspirations, Offseason carries more of a literary mood while fitting into a persistent coastal horror trend of late. Seasonal beach towns feel haunted once balmy temperatures start to tumble. Remove the cheery masses, ice cream vendors and sizzling sands overtaken by crowds, and you’ll be left with eerily quiet streets, alongside waves echoing with distant memories of summer days. Set on one such mostly vacant (and likely fictional) island getting ready to shutter before an impending storm, writer-director Mickey Keating’s unnerving “Offseason” comprehends the particular creepiness of an insular vacation spot braving the year’s colder months. Though thinly conceived overall with not much philosophy to back its daunting visuals, “Offseason” still offers some genuinely spine-tingling images and sounds that will keep midnight audiences on their toes until the end.
Indeed, once you shrug off its thematic emptiness and occasionally clumsy dialogue, Keating’s genre exercise proves to be an absorbing enough watch, with Jocelin Donahue’s resolute Marie leading the way in a survival tale made of nightmares.
