Exclusive: Talent agency Kmr Talent is grappling with a “talent payment breakdown,” a set of logistical and staffing issues that have resulted in late payments to clients, owner and President Mark Measures tells Deadline.
The revelation come following outreach to Deadline on the part of multiple talent reps, who say money owed to clients is now several months late. The situation triggered a wave of rumors that the agency may be going under.
Highlighting banking issues, the crashing of a database involved with payment, and the loss of the agency’s Head of Talent Payment as factors behind issues with pay-out, Measures stressed that the agency is actively “working [its] way out” of the situation, in dialogue with talent payment companies, as well as talent reps and unions.

Four years ago, actor Dave Franco made his feature directorial debut with the horror film The Rental, which happened to star his wife Alison Brie. Now Deadline reports that Franco and Brie are set to share the screen in the upcoming horror film Together, which they will also be producing, with first-time feature filmmaker Michael Shanks writing and directing.
Tango, Picturestart, and 30West are providing the financing, while Picturestart, Tango, 1.21, and Princess Pictures produce alongside Franco and Brie.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to learn that Together is about “the horror of co-dependency, told in a unique way.” Of course, they’re not ready to tell us just how the film will be approaching this subject matter in a unique way.

Horse Girl: Oren Gets Hot to Trot in Strange, Alluring Debut
What is it about horses, exactly, and their tacit parallels with subterranean conduits of human sexuality? Sans the inevitable descent into the uncomfortable subject of bestiality (should such subconscious yearnings for the steed ever be acted upon), the anthropomorphism of humans (particularly women) mutating into horses is a common occurrence in metaphorical narratives.
Often resulting in sexual liberation, Ann Oren’s arresting debut, Piaffe, dives headlong into allegory. Titled for the dressage movement in horse training exhibition where the rider sits atop a horse while essentially trotting in place, Oren quickly assumes the Kafkaesque position when her protagonist embarks upon a strange transformation instigated by an occupational catalyst.…...

Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown are seeking best friends for the end of the world.
The duo star as lifelong pals who are the last survivors on the planet after the apocalypse in Mel Esyln’s debut feature film “Biosphere,” which premiered at 2022 TIFF. The film is set to be released by IFC Films.
Per the official synopsis, in the not-too-distant future, the last two men on Earth must adapt and evolve to save humanity. Billy (Mark Duplass) and Ray (Sterling K. Brown) are lifelong best friends, brothers from another mother — they also happen to be the last two men on earth. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed the custom biosphere they call home, outfitting it with both creature comforts and the necessities to sustain life on a doomed planet. When the population of their fishpond — which supplies essential protein — begins waning, the...

Editor’s note: this blog originally ran in October of last year. Spin Me Round is now available to stream on Hulu. Special thanks to Jeff Baena and author Kristopher Hewkin.

Filmmaker Jeff Baena has consistently defied expectations over his career, taking audiences on wild rides that often veer from the comedic, to thrilling, to deeply unsettling—often within the same movie. His latest, Spin Me Round, brings his all-star comedy world repertory to Italy for a tale of sun-dappled Tuscan romance gone way, way wrong. For the second film in a row, Baena co-wrote the script with lead Alison Brie, following their first successful writing collaboration on the 2020 psychological thriller Horse Girl.
Brie stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Aubrey Plaza (a two-time Film Independent Spirit Awards host and winner!), Lil Rel Howery, Tim Heidecker and Fred Armisen. The film tells the story of Amber (Brie), a restaurant manager...

Jake Lacy (A Friend of the Family, The White Lotus) and Alison Brie are set as leads opposite Annette Bening and Sam Neill in Peacock’s upcoming limited series Apples Never Fall, based on Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers author Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel.

Former tennis coaches Joy (Bening) and Stan (Neill) are parents to four adult children. After decades of marriage, they finally have sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. But after Joy disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents’ marriage and their family history with fresh eyes.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco are pros at not making things awkward on set together, including the times when Franco has to direct his wife’s sex scenes.
According to the “Glow” actress, the two have “worked together enough now” that even intimate scenes “[don’t] make Dave and I uncomfortable.”
Brie’s comments came while discussing the couple’s new movie “Somebody I Used to Know” with Jezebel. The rom-com, starring Brie, was co-written by the two and directed by Franco.

Brie explained: “The second movie that we did together ever, as actors, was Jeff Baena’s ‘The Little Hours’, and in that movie, Dave has make-out or sex scenes with three other actors and me. So, I just feel like that was the ripping of the band-aid.”

Finally, single career-focused women get a rom-com to themselves, sans judgment. In the era of Taylor Swift’s “Midnights,” Sza’s “Sos,” and Emily Henry’s novel “Book Lovers,” it’s clear that 2023 is the year of women not apologizing for their relationship statuses, nor being neatly regulated to peppy Band-Aids like Galentine’s Day to soften the blow of the annual lovefest coupledom that is Valentine’s Day. But it’s not St. Valentine’s fault: It’s ours for ignoring self-love as the crux of V-Day.
Thankfully, Alison Brie and Dave Franco have continued the unapologetic, workaholic single woman trend with “Somebody I Used to Know.” Don’t let the trailer nor first act fool you: This is a distinctly empowered subversion on “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and fellow rom-coms that came before it.
“Somebody I Used to Know” begins at what usually is the third act of a standard rom-com.

For me personally, Dave Franco was never an actor that carried such an aura that automatically made a film or series tremendously more interesting entirely due to his presence. That said, his feature directorial debut, The Rental (from 2020), left a good impression, despite the movie itself being far from perfect. On the flip side there's Alison Brie. The actress has also ventured into producing and writing in recent years, and now joins her husband to star in the film Somebody I Used to Know, handling the lead role and sharing a screenplay credit with Franco. // Continue Reading ›...

Dave Franco's sophomore directorial effort is headed to Prime Video next month, and it looks to be an angsty and romantic dramedy led by co-writer and star Alison Brie. It also looks like a surprise "Community" reunion, as none other than Danny Pudi pops up in the new first trailer sporting a mustache. Oh, and if none of that's doing it for you, "Somebody I Used To Know" looks like it might feature a musical performance from co-star Kiersey Clemons, whose track from "Hearts Beat Loud" I'm still playing on repeat five years after that movie debuted.

Just when it seems every production under the sun seems to be jetting off to Italy, “Spin Me Round” writer-director Jeff Baena looked for another angle: to dismantle the fantasy facade of the romanticized nation, and then, well, spin it. Baena’s “Spin Me Round,” which he co-wrote with lead star and frequent collaborator Alison Brie is part coming-of-age story and part slap in the face of the “expectation versus reality” memes, all wrapped up in a #MeToo mystery.

There are a number of reasons to recommend Spin Me Round, a winning comedy about the manager of an Olive Garden-style restaurant who gets chosen to attend a training program in Italy. The film features a shockingly stacked supporting cast of comedy titans: Aubrey Plaza, Tim Heidecker, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Lil Rel Howery, The Office’s Zach Woods, Looking’s Lauren Weedman, and High Maintenance’s Ben Sinclair. The latest from director Jeff Baena, whose strange and wildly diverse filmography includes Life After Beth and The Little Hours, Spin Me Round stood out as one of the better comedies in a strong SXSW lineup earlier this year––even its Harlequin romance novel-aping poster is a gem.
However, the top reason to see Spin Me Round—it is not even close, really—is Alison Brie landing a starring role perfectly suited for her talents. The Glow star co-wrote the script with Baena,...

All Amber wants is an “Under the Tuscan Sun” kind of love affair. What she gets, though, is a much darker twist on an Italian happily ever after.
Alison Brie stars as Amber, a manager at fast food restaurant Tuscan Grove (big Olive Garden energy) who wins a corporate retreat to Italy. Yet Nick’s assistant Kat (Aubrey Plaza) seems to be letting Amber in on a secret about Nick…

"Listen - I think something weird might be going on." IFC Films has revealed the full-length official trailer for a wacky indie dark comedy film titled Spin Me Round, the latest creation from indie filmmaker Jeff Baena and actor Alison Brie. This first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at this year's Seattle Film Festival. Brie & Baena previously made Joshy, The Little Hours, and Horse Girl together - they've got quite a collaboration going. Flown out to an Italian immersion program on her company's dime, what starts as a romantic getaway devolves into chaos in this wild new comedy. The film stars an impressive ensemble: Alison Brie, Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker, Ayden Mayeri, Zach Woods, Ben Sinclair, Fred Armisen, and Aubrey Plaza. This looks good! I'm curious to find out what is going on with this guy and all the mystery. Seems like kooky fun!

Is the rom-com due for a transformation? The new film “Spin Me Round” thinks so. Having premiered earlier this at the film SXSW Film Festival, “Spin Me Round” stars Alison Brie as a woman whose business trip embraces romantic chaos. It also marks Brie’s second credit as co-writer — her first being the critically acclaimed “Horse Girl.” Both projects paired the actress with co-writer and director Jeff Baena.

"Pull up a chair, and mangia!" IFC Films has unveiled a first look teaser for the wacky indie dark comedy titled Spin Me Round, the latest from filmmaker Jeff Baena and actor Alison Brie. The two previously made the films Joshy and The Little Hours and Horse Girl together. This new one premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, and also played at this year's Seattle Film Festival. This is obviously riffing on Olive Garden, the most bland Italian restaurant you can find in America. I am curious to know what goes down after she lands in Italy and learns what's really going on.

Exclusive: John Ortiz is set for a key recurring role opposite Vince Vaughn in Apple TV+ drama series Bad Monkey, written and executive produced by Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence. He replaces Arturo Luis Soria who had been originally cast in the role.
Based on Carl Hiaasen’s popular 2013 novel, Bad Monkey tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), a one-time detective demoted to restaurant inspector in Southern Florida. A severed arm found by a tourist out fishing pulls Yancy into the world of greed and corruption that decimates the land and environment in both Florida and the Bahamas. And yes, there’s a monkey.
Ortiz will play Rogelio, a good Key West police detective who comes to his best friend and ex-partner, Andrew Yancy, with a life-changing assignment. It further complicates things that Rogelio’s husband is also Yancy’s attorney.

Exclusive: Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, which made its world premiere at SXSW last month, has seen its North American rights get scooped up by IFC Films and AMC+. The pic will hit theaters and VOD and stream exclusively on AMC+ this summer.
The pic reps filmmaker Baena’s reteam with Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Molly Shannon, who star in the film. Brie co-wrote and produced Spin Me Round, in which she plays the manager of an Italian restaurant chain who wins the opportunity to attend the franchise’s educational immersion program in Italy. What she thought would be a romantic getaway devolves into chaos and catastrophe.
Baena and Brie previously teamed on Horse Girl, she starred in and co-wrote with Baena, who also directed. Brie also appeared in Baena’s The Little Hours and Joshy. Plaza has starred in Baena’s The Little Hours, Joshy and Life After Beth.

A frothy wish-fulfillment comedy that takes a few wildly unpredictable turns, “Spin Me Round” serves up an al dente satire of corporate retreat culture by following the manager of a popular pasta restaurant on an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy, where nothing goes as she expected. Amber (Alison Brie) imagines something along the lines of the company’s TV commercials, in which handsome Tuscan Grove founder Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola) serves pasta in the shade of the family villa — the ideal backdrop for a straightforward rom-com scenario. But this sly, if slightly undercooked movie has other plans, earning its title as it keeps us guessing.
Reteaming with “Horse Girl” director Jeff Baena, Brie co-wrote the script, conceiving her own character as a basic, ambitionless Audrey Hepburn type — all the better to misdirect audiences, who’ve been led to believe they’re in for a low-budget “Roman Holiday,” rather than the more...

It’s a tale as old as time: a seemingly regular gal is unexpectedly swept away to an idyllic European locale, where she indulges in food, fun, and the affection of a tasty new companion, a delight for the senses that reinforces just how undesirable her current life is. When Amber (Alison Brie), the manager of a Bakersfield location of Tuscan Grove — essentially an Olive Garden knock-off, all forced familial cheer and industrial-sized bags of Alfredo sauce — gets picked for just such a trip in Jeff Baena’s off-kilter fish-out-of-water comedy “Spin Me Round,” what’s to come is expected. And
Spice is not something Amber is used to, and while she never says she’s bored with her life, she still jumps at the chance for an all-expenses-paid trip to her employer’s Italian-set “institute,” a treat for her near-decade-long service to the smash hit fast casual joint dreamed...

Two books feature in director Jeff Baena’s new irreverent brainchild “Spin Me Round”: One is the quintessentially sentimental and aggressively life-affirming “Eat, Pray, Love,” while the other, likely more obscure for American audiences, is Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez’s gritty, nonfiction crime saga “News of a Kidnapping.”
An Olive Garden commercial that devolves into “Eyes Wide Shut,” the film fluctuates between the two distinct modes of these tomes: the artificial, improbable fantasy of a vibrant European trip where all inhibitions are put on hold, and the fear-inducing suspicion that something perverse and worthy of uncovering might be unfolding right under the surface.
True to its title, Baena’s latest takes us through more than a few tonal twists and plot turns, even if they don’t always land smoothly or humorously, in its exploration of how fooling oneself into believing a fantastical fiction can provide dangerous respite from a bland,...

There’s a euphoria among film sellers and buyers as SXSW finally convenes Friday in Austin, Texas after a three-year pandemic shutdown.
With the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival being virtual, and the hybrid edition of TIFF seeing reduced capacities, few industry execs, and a muted atmosphere, SXSW marks the return to packed, receptive audiences; actual live pulses which can trigger good reviews and social media wattage, culminating in what some believe could be an active sales market here in Texas’s capital.
SXSW has a knack for programming comedies, genre, and genre-twisted features; titles which are best experienced by a reactive audience. Sellers previously told Deadline that virtual viewing of such fare at recent fests doesn’t really help their cause. While SXSW is enforcing vaxx cards and mask-wearing indoors, screenings will be at full capacity. In 2019, SXSW drew a reported 73K attendees alone to the...

There was a moment early in the pandemic when it seemed like everyone was trying to be a baker. And do you remember that carpentry phase when your friends were showing off pieces of furniture they had repurposed? Oh, and how about that artistic stint that fizzled quickly on your timeline? Something about the isolation — Or is it the freedom? The boredom? — that brings out the creativity deep inside us.

Voting for nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards finally starts today. And you thought this day would never come, right?
In the longest season in the modern history of Oscar campaigning, we have now completed six months since the traditional start of the season with the fall film festivals at Venice/Toronto/Telluride — however non-traditional those early September pandemic-affected festivals themselves turned out to be. But with Covid still on the loose, these Oscars are going to be very different and aren’t even taking place until their latest date ever, Sunday April 25, at the Dolby Theatre and “other locations” to be announced later according to the Academy.
That means eight months for contenders endlessly talking about their wares instead of the usual six, which is a real long haul in and of itself. Oy. At the end of...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

It feels like there’s at least one memorable horse movie every year at Sundance. Dream Horse played last year (as did Horse Girl), The Mustang was a hit in 2019, and Chloé Zhao’s The Rider screened in 2018. There’s just something about the bond between man and the animal that’s not necessarily known as his best friend but is still thought of in quite an endearing manner. The best of those films tend to focus just as much on the human protagonist’s own internal and interpersonal struggles as they do on their relationship with their prized steed. Although Sloane Caldwell is not the protagonist of Clea DuVall’s Happiest Season, as played by Alison Brie, there is not a single scene Sloane is in, where you don’t wish there was an entire film dedicated to her character. Sloane is the oldest sister of Harper who throughout the years has developed a competitive relationship with her picture perfect little sibling, as they strive for the attention of their loving, but emotionally unaware conservative parents (played by Victor Garber and Mary Steenburgen). Sloane has channeled her own imperfections into a life of make believe, she designs gift baskets for a living, and tries to maintain an illusion of cordiality at all costs, even when her own marriage is falling apart.
Little does Sloane, or anyone in the Caldwell family, know that Harper has a secret of her own that will mar her flawlessness, and while the film concentrates...

As we entered 2020, there was arguably no actor poised to have as monumental of a year as Alison Brie. With an already diverse body of work ranging from period dramas to comedies, animation, video games, indie darlings, and more, this year especially feels like a snapshot of everything she’s strived for her entire career thus far. She has four acting credits across such films as “Horse Girl,” “The Rental,” “Happiest Season,” and “Promising Young Woman” while also spending time behind the camera directing an episode of the Disney+ docuseries “Marvel 616” and producing and co-writing the script for “Horse Girl.” Since her dueling breakout performances in “Mad Men” and “Community,” we’ve always known Brie was someone who refused to be put into a box, and it’s that exact drive that’s made her such an excitingly unpredictable talent on screen and a force of versatility.

We live in a time when there are so many people in show business that it’s hard to remember everyone’s name and the movies, shows, or music they’ve made. For “Shirley” director Josephine Decker, Elisabeth Moss was always the “top choice” to play author Shirley Jackson in her drama.
“You were my top choice!” Decker told Elisabeth Moss at TheWrap’s Sundance Studio in January. “We were all like, let’s get Elisabeth Moss to play Shirley!”
Moss was drawn to the project due to the Sarah Gubbins screenplay, as well as the other actors attached.

Then we got Odessa Young, this beautiful young actor, and then we had Logan [Lerman], who brought so much to that character.
