Writer-producer Tom Wheeler has set up a pair of high-concept drama projects at Fox and NBC.
Both have landed script commitments with penalty.
This is the second consecutive busy development season for "Empire" creator Wheeler, who last year landed a pilot order from ABC for the fantasy drama "Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas," which was in serious contention for a series pickup.
With his new projects, Wheeler is staying in the family- adventure genre, which he also is tackling on the feature side with two scripts he is writing: the "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" and "Cutlass Island."
"I have two big, event-style series that can bring the whole family to television, the equivalent of summer four-quadrant movies," Wheeler said. "Tele¬vision is so fragmented these days; I just want one great show that has something great for everyone."

"Puss in Boots" has found its script writer in television writer Tom Wheeler. The scribe who is known for his work in mini-series "Empire" and TV movie "The World According to Barnes" has been tapped to tackle the "Shrek" spin-off's screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Wheeler will work on the animation's draft which has been written by Chris Miller, the co-director and co-writer of "Shrek the Third". Aside from this DreamWorks Animation project, he has recently written the fantasy pilot "Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas" for ABC, and is developing the screenplay of "Cutlass Island".
"Puss in Boots" is a stand alone movie for the feline character first introduced in "Shrek 2". Described as a famous ogre assassin, the character which is voiced by Antonio Banderas in the "Shrek" franchise was originally hired by King Harold to kill Shrek, but he went on to become one of the ogre's entourage.

You’d think with the huge success of the Shrek franchise, the second flick is the 10th-highest-grossing movie of all time, that the previously announced Puss in Boots spin-off would have already made it’s way to the screen. For whatever reasons the flick is only now moving forward, with DreamWorks hiring Tom Wheeler to write the screenplay. Wheeler’s credits include the mini-series Empire and ABC’s upcoming Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas. Boots will follow the adventures of the feline assassin/swordsman voiced by Antonio Banderas. The character, originally hired to knock off the grumpy green ogre, debuted in Shrek 2. He went on to become part of Shrek's entourage. Chris Miller, who added voices and dialogue to previous Shrek installments and co-directed and co-wrote the third movie, wrote an earlier draft of the Boots screenplay. As for another “regular” installment in the massive franchise, Shrek Goes Fourth...

What's that about cat-scratch fever? Well, TV scribe Tom Wheeler's got it.
Wheeler has been hired to write the "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" for DreamWorks Animation, a stand-alone feature foray for the feline assassin/swordsman voiced by Antonio Banderas in the two most recent "Shrek" films.
Michelle Raimo is producing.
The "Shrek" franchise has ballooned into a multibillion-dollar property, with three feature films grossing more than $2 billion worldwide in theaters, tens of millions of DVDs sold and merchandising in every toy store. A fourth feature film, "Shrek Goes Fourth," is due in theaters May 21, 2010.

It's pilot screening time this week at ABC, and the TV types are abuzz about the fate of the network's projects that, because of the WGA strike, are being seen by Alphabet brass six months after they were greenlighted to pilots.
The field is being narrowed down, and there is speculation ABC might pick up a drama and a comedy series Friday. Overall, the network is expected to greenlight at least three projects each on the comedy and drama side.
Two NYPD-themed one-hours -- ABC Studios' Nathan Fillion starrer "The Castle" and Sony TV's ensemble dramedy "The Unusuals" -- have emerged as front-runners.
Additionally, 20th's untitled Dave Hemingson legal dramedy screened well Wednesday. Rob Thomas' "Cupid" update, which has not been seen by ABC execs, also is rising, somewhat overshadowing Thomas' other hourlong pilot at ABC Studios, "Good Behavior."
Also a possibility: WBTV's fantasy "Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas," which has not screened.
On the comedy side, three single-camera half-hours continue to enjoy the strongest buzz: 20th TV's Victor Fresco office comedy and the ABC Studios-produced family shows "Never Better," starring Damon Wayans, and the Kristin Newman project, starring Alyssa Milano.
