Adam Sandler has set a new comedy special at Netflix — this time directed by Josh Safdie.
The project continues Sandler’s string of collaborations with Safie, who co-directed him in 2019’s “Uncut Gems” alongside his brother Benny Safdie. Sandler also starred in the brothers’ 2020 short film “Goldman v. Silverman” and is set to lead an upcoming feature set in the world of sports memorabilia to be directed by Josh and produced by Benny, though the latter told Variety in January that the film was “on pause.”
Currently untitled, the special will be Sandler’s second at Netflix, following up on his 2018 set “100% Fresh” — which went on to receive a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sandler has worked on numerous projects for Netflix: In 2023, he led the voice cast of the streamer’s animated musical comedy film “Leo” and starred opposite Idina Menzel in “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,...

Earlier this month, The Bricklayer, the latest action film from Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight director Renny Harlin, was given a theatrical, On Demand, and Digital release. We’ve previously shared interviews with the film’s stars Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev, and now JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has sat down for an interview with Harlin himself! The primary focus of this interview is The Bricklayer, of course, but it also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects like The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea. You can check it out in the embed above.
Bumbray really enjoyed The Bricklayer, giving the film a 7/10 review you can read at This Link. If you’d like to watch the movie, you can do so on Amazon.

Welcome to another rundown of every stat released by the TV insights company Samba TV. Below, we’ll run through all their released viewing stats (whether through their socials or through somewhere else) for Netflix’s newly released movies for the past three years.
How does Samba TV get its data? As described on its own website, the company tracks what appears on the users’ TV by reading pixels and utilizing this data for personalized recommendations on the TV or mobile apps connected to the television.
It’s also important to note that Samba TV stats typically only cover US households.
Of course, Netflix itself releases excellent viewing stats every Tuesday via its top 10 site. However, more data is always good, and it’s good to see shows and movies benchmarked against each other from a company like Samba TV.

We all know that Adam Sandler likes working with people he knows. The movies he produces with his production company Happy Madison regularly feature Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and other cast members from his Saturday Night Live days. Many of his movies also feature supporting turns from guys you only see in Happy Madison flicks, like Alan Covert and Peter Dante. And, of course, he loves to cast Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore as his love interests.
So it’s no surprise that Sandler’s latest Netflix movie You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzah sees him once again paired with Idina Menzel, who played his wife in Uncut Gems. But Sandler isn’t the star of You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, a comedy based on the 2005 YA novel by Fiona Rosenbloom. The return of Futurama found a place on the streaming charts for the final week of July. Suits spent another week as the overall No. 1, though it declined (slightly) for the first time since it hit the charts in late June.
Futurama’s revival on Hulu (along with the rest of its catalog) delivered 506 million minutes of viewing time for the week of July 24-30, tying for third place among original series with Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer. Sweet Magnolias remained the top original for a second week with 1.42 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.22 billion a week earlier.

The summer of Suits continues, with the legal drama racking up its fourth consecutive week of more than 3 billion minutes of watch time — and resetting the record for acquired series on Nielsen’s streaming charts yet again.
The former USA Network show, which streams on Netflix and Peacock, had 3.88 billion minutes of viewing for the week of July 17-23. That surpasses the previous week’s 3.67 billion minutes, which in turn eclipsed the previous two weeks’ totals for Suits — all of which were, at the time, the biggest single weeks ever for an acquired show since Nielsen began tracking streaming show viewing in 2020. The 3.88 billion minutes for July 17-23 is now the 13th biggest total for any week in the past three-plus years.
Two other shows topped the billion-minute mark for the week: Bluey on Disney+ and Sweet Magnolias on Netflix finished in a virtual tie with 1.22 billion minutes of viewing...

Trying to get transparent streaming numbers is harder than trying to pull an infected tooth from a rabid animal, but the Nielsen streaming chart sure does try. Their most recent report (via The Hollywood Reporter) shows that, once again, "Suits" is dominating the streaming charts despite the show going off the air in 2019. The legal drama originally aired on USA Network for nine seasons but pulled in an impressive 3.7 billion minutes viewed this past week, breaking the single-week record for a library show on the Nielsen streaming chart for the third time in a row.
But "Suits" is not alone in breaking records, as the groundbreaking children's series, "Bluey" hit its first billion-minute week on Disney+, coming in second with 1.35 billion minutes streamed. This is the highest a Disney+ series has ever ranked on the Nielsen streaming charts, outperforming any of the Marvel or "Star Wars" shows put out by the platform.

The series grew 19 percent from the previous week’s 966 million minutes and hit its highest weekly total since late December 2022, when the binge release of season three had 1.67 billion minutes of viewing.

“Suits” has broken its own Nielsen record as the most-streamed acquired program for a second time in a row.
The legal drama earned a record high of 3.698 billion minutes viewed on streaming services during the week of July 10-16, according to Nielsen streaming figures, beating last week’s total by a slim 24 million while increasing by an average of 24 minutes viewed as compared to last week.
Adding in the week’s boost, “Suits” has logged over 12.8 billion minutes of viewing across Netflix and Peacock in four weeks, from June 19 to July 16, and currently stands as the No. 13 most-watched show in terms of total viewing for a streaming title in a week.
Momentum for “Suits” began after the series debuted on Netflix on June 17 and the drama logged 2.3 billion viewing minutes from June 19 to June 25. By June 26 to July 2, “Suits” set its first record for the most-streamed acquired title with 3.1 billion...

“Bluey,” the Australian animated preschool series that streams on Disney+, appears on Nielsen’s streaming rankings most weeks. But during the July 10-16 viewing window, the series had its best showing yet, becoming the second most-streamed title of the week.
“Bluey” not only crossed one billion minutes watched for the first time, it clocked 1.4 billion minutes, trailing only behind “Suits,” which had its fourth week in a row at the top of the chart thanks to its recent Netflix debut. The legal drama, which concluded on the USA Network in 2019, was watched for 3.7 billion minutes — breaking its own record for most-watched acquired title for the third time.
“The Lincoln Lawyer” took third place after charting at No. 2 the week before, when its second season debuted. From July 10-16, the Netflix legal drama brought in just under 1.3 billion viewing minutes. It was followed by “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” with 1.1 billion minutes watched.

“Workaholics” and “The Righteous Gemstones” star Adam DeVine called out Variety, saying the trade magazine misrepresented his comments about Marvel movies in a podcast interview.
While promoting his latest Netflix movie “The Out-Laws” on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast, DeVine gave his theory about why there have been fewer theatrical comedies in recent years, crediting the shift to audiences expecting to see “$200 million” movies in theaters. DeVine blamed Marvel and “superhero movies” for creating that expectation.
That interview led to Variety posting an article titled “Adam Devine Says Marvel Movies ‘Ruined Comedies’: They ‘Make Those Movies Kind of Funny,’ But ‘It’s Not Real Comedy.'” A social media post promoting the article read, “Adam Devine: ‘You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f—ing comedy…My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.'”

Outside of its CGI battles, stacked casts and casual disregard that not every series within the franchise needs its own franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be best known for its implementation of comedy. Certainly the MCU has some legitimately hilarious moments, with some movies landing the laughs better than others (Thor: Ragnarok and the Guardians movies tend to get the most praise here). But according to actor Adam DeVine, who is no stranger to the comedy game, Marvel has outright ruined the genre.
Speaking on the This Past Weekend podcast (per Variety), DeVine said, “You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f*cking comedy…Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy…it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.” That feels like a bold statement, but DeVine defended it as such: “I feel...

Adam Devine appeared on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast during his press tour for Netflix’s “The Out-Laws” and shared his theory that Marvel movies and other superhero films killed the traditional Hollywood comedy. The “Workaholics” and “Pitch Perfect” alum noted that because Marvel movies rely so much on humor, they ended up becoming Hollywood’s new de facto comedy films.
“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a fucking comedy,” Devine said. “Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy…it’s hard. Season two of The Lincoln Lawyer got off to a strong start for Netflix in the streaming rankings — but another legal drama, Suits, remained a runaway No. 1.
The Lincoln Lawyer recorded 1.41 billion minutes of viewing for the week of July 3-9; the first half of its second season premiered July 6. The viewing time is an improvement of 59 percent over its series premiere week in May 2022 — when the show had 884 million minutes of viewing — and its second-highest tally ever on the Nielsen streaming chart.
It was also the top original series for the week, moving ahead of fellow Netflix series The Witcher. The fantasy drama had 1.19 billion minutes of viewing, down a modest 9 percent from 1.31 billion minutes a week earlier.
Suits, meanwhile, spent its third straight week at No. 1 and broke its own record for single-week viewing of an acquired series on the Nielsen charts. The former USA series, which streams on Netflix and Peacock,...

Netflix and Peacock have a hot commodity on their hands with Suits.
The USA Network series debuted on both platforms in June and subsequently broke a Nielsen streaming record for acquired programming. Well, Suits has now broken that same record two weeks in a row after racking up 3.7B viewing minutes during the week of July 3 to July 9. That’s up an impressive 17% from the previous measurement week, when the series first broke the record for most-watched acquired content in a single week with 3.1B minutes viewed.
This marks the third week that Suits took the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen streaming charts. According to Nielsen, this week’s viewing also puts the series at No. 13 on the company’s list of highest weekly viewing totals of all time for a streaming program, behind shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday, Tiger King, and Ozark.

It’s a “Suits” week yet again. The legal drama that ran on USA Network from 2011 to 2019 had its third week in a row in the No. 1 spot on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. Although a few movies have been dominating Netflix’s film charts for weeks, the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 24 had a new entry in the action-comedy “Hidden Strike,” starring Jackie Chan and John Cena. Meanwhile, “The Witcher” returned to first place for TV. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Directed by Scott Waugh (“Need for Speed”), “Hidden Strike” was produced independently and sold to Netflix for worldwide streaming rights, a wise purchase considering that the film received 22 million views since quietly hitting the streamer last Friday. It was the #1 watched movie in roughly 50 territories worldwide, and made the Top 10 in 73 countries. Oddly, the United States was not one of them, since that honor went to “They Cloned Tyrone,” which received 11.1 million views worldwide in its first full week on Netflix, enough for third place.

The Witcher Season 3 has reclaimed its spot atop Netflix’s English-language TV list for the week of July 24 to July 30.
The second volume of Season 3 episodes dropped on the streamer on July 27, helping the third installment amass 7.8M views. To date, Season 3 has tallied 47.7M views since the first half of the season premiered on June 29.
The season still has a long way to go before it might join Season 1 on Netflix’s all-time most popular list, though it has plenty of time to do so since the second half of the season still has more than 80 days in its measurement window.
Sweet Magnolias Season 3 was bumped to No. 2 with the hype surrounding The Witcher, but those episodes still managed to draw 5.3M views. Meanwhile, Season 5 of Too Hot To Handle came in third place with 3.2M views, while Season 2 of The Lincoln Lawyer fell to fourth with 3M views.

Netflix has leaned into its strength in international content to cultivate diverse audiences back home, too. Its latest film, “Bird Box Barcelona,” which moved the post-apocalyptic action-horror storyline to the Spanish city, delivered a sizable and diverse audience as a result, ranking at No. 4 on the Wrap Report’s most-streamed chart for the week of July 17-23.
Data shows that greater on-screen representation has the potential to increase viewership overall, as well as among diverse populations. The sequel to the 2018 original “Bird Box” was no exception as Hispanic audiences overindexed by over 50% above the national average in its opening weekend, while Black households were 25% more likely to watch than the average U.S. household.

“Bird Box Barcelona” remained the most-watched film worldwide on Netflix, even as “The Out-Laws” and the newly released “They Cloned Tyrone” dominated the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 17. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Normally, Netflix’s English language films have the biggest audiences across the globe on a weekly basis, but with 19 million views, “Bird Box Barcelona” was the most-watched film in much of Latin and South America, as well as Spain and ten other European countries, plus a good portion of Asia as well.
Because of that, the “Bird Box” prequel ended up faring better than the #1 English language film, “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, which continues to be quite popular with 12.1 million views last week. “The Out-Laws” was in the Top 10 for 93 countries, but only #1 in four European countries, as well as Israel.

The reign of “Queen Charlotte” isn’t over yet. During the week of July 17-July 23, the Shondaland title joined Netflix’s most popular titles list at No. 10 with 80.3 million views to date. The “Bridgerton” prequel series opened on May 4 and earned 148.28 million hours viewed on the Netflix Top 10 chart during the May 1-7 viewing window, making the show the most-viewed title during the viewing window.
On the non-english side, “Bird Box Barcelona” leads the Netflix Top 10 this week with 19 million total views. Like the original US film starring Sandra Bullock, the European film follows a similar sinister force that threatens to destroy humanity. Sebastián and his daughter begin their own great adventure of survival in Barcelona. The film opened in the No. 1 spot on the Non-English Films List following its July 14 debut.
A newcomer on the English-language film chart, “They Cloned Tyrone” cracked the list at No. 3 with 6.3 million views.

Dearest gentle readers, it’s a big day for the Bridgerton-verse!
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has officially been crowned one of Netflix’s most popular English-language TV series of all time. With 80.3M views to date, the prequel series now sits at No. 10, replacing The Watcher.
Since Netflix only releases viewership numbers for the Top 10 shows each week, it’s unclear how many views the series received during the week of July 17 to July 23 to push it over the edge. The series hasn’t appeared in the weekly Top 10 since June.
Queen Charlotte now joins both seasons of Bridgerton on the honor list (Season 1 sits at No. 4 while Season 2 is No. 8).

With a troubled history and soft box office, DC Comics’ “The Flash” ($19.99) on PVOD gives Warner Bros. its second #1 film right now. As “Barbie” comes off a $162 million domestic opening in theaters, “The Flash” takes the top spot at all three VOD charts this week, just over a month after debuting in theaters. Never mind that “Barbie” made more in its opening weekend than “The Flash” did in its under-$110 million domestic run, on a movie with twice the production cost.
In an even quicker turnaround, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” ($19.99), consistent with Universal’s home release strategy after three weekends in theaters, also made all three lists after the animated feature grossed $15 million. Vudu, with a revenue-based chart that favors higher-priced titles, is best at #3.

Summer is always an interesting time in the media calendar. The vast majority of major TV shows are on hiatus and so much attention is being paid to movies on the big screen, that some surprising trends can develop. Despite the fact that Netflix continues to dominate the total amount of time that viewers spend watching TV and movies, last week, it not only did not occupy either of the top spots in Reelgood’s weekly streaming rankings, nor did it claim half of slots on Reelgood's Top 10.

This would probably be a good time for IndieWire staff to buy Powerball tickets (a $1 billion jackpot!): As we predicted last year would happen, Netflix just scrapped its cheapest ad-free tier “for new or rejoining members” in the U.S. as well as the UK. That means current subscribers to that “Basic” tier can remain with the plan until they choose to select another one or cancel their Netflix account.
The same shift happened about a month ago in Canada; Netflix’s changes often trickle down through our northern border.
The issue was economics. Netflix wants to steer subscribers to either its “Standard with Ads” plan, which starts at $6.99 in the U.S. and £4.99 in the UK, or its commercial-free “Standard” plan. That one costs $15.49 per month in the U.S. and £10.99 in the UK, and it’s the one you probably have.

Hollywood actors and writers may be on the picket line, due to the many issues they have with various studios and networks, but they can’t really say that all streamers aren’t reporting how their shows and movies are faring. That’s exactly what Netflix has been doing each and every week with the Top 10 charts for the week of July 10, giving a detailed report on its current films and series, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” took the top spot for the latter and the sci-fi sequel “Bird Box Barcelona” entered the charts.
We’ll begin with the latter, since “Bird Box Barcelona” is the sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest hits, 2018’s “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock, the streamer’s fourth most-watched feature film ever. In this case, as the title implies, the post-apocalyptic action has been moved to Spain, and thusly, it charted on the non-English film...

After two weeks reigning over Netflix’s English-language series, Season 3 of The Witcher has been dethroned. The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 is the new champ for the week of July 10 to July 16 with 8.3M views across five episodes.
The first five episodes hit Netflix on July 6 and debuted at No. 2 on the list last week. The latter half of the season is set to release in August.
Audiences were also catching up with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s Mickey Haller in Season 1 of the legal drama, which soared to No. 5 on the English-language list with 3.4M views.
The Witcher didn’t fall far from its top spot, though it did experience a fairly significant decrease in viewership week-over-week. The first half of Season 3 is currently sitting in second place with 6.7M views, which is about half of the week prior’s nearly 14M views.

Franchises in theaters are showing their age, but they’re a sure bet at home. This week’s VOD charts have “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney), both $19.99, battling for top spot. The Hasbro action film is #1 at Vudu and iTunes, while the latest Marvel entry remains #1 at GooglePlay.
Meantime, Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” (Focus), released at $19.99 after its fourth weekend, is fourth or fifth on all three lists. It is behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s biggest domestic hit, now at $5.99 and ranks third everywhere. The top three films all grossed between $150 million and $575 million; “Asteroid” is not yet at $30 million. Anderson’s $25 million budget, a fraction of its competitors’, suggests a lucrative haul for Focus.
Only 13 titles made the charts, with eight on all three. The still-pvod “Fast X” (Universal) and standard-price “Sisu” and “John Wick: Chapter 4...

There were many new entries into the Netflix Top 10 film chart for the week of July 3, some new seasons of familiar TV series, as well as a new comedy movie. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Chris Hemsworth‘s action-thriller “Extraction 2” has been dominating the English movie charts for weeks, but it was bumped by the new action-comedy “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Ellen Barkin and Pierce Brosnan. It racked up 19.6 million views since debuting on the streamer to take the #1 spot, the most-watched movie in the United States and over forty other countries (but not the UK or Canada).
“Extraction 2” remained in second place with 8.9 million views to bring its total to 111.4 million views in four weeks of release. That’s just behind Jennifer Lopez‘s action flick “The Mother,” with 130 million views to date. As expected, the animated feature “Nimona,” was able to...

The Witcher Season 3 is still holding strong on Netflix’s English-language TV list.
In its second week on the streamer, the first half of the new season drew 13.8M views (66.5M view hours divided by 4.82 runtime hours) for the week of July 3 to 9. That’s down slightly from the 15.2M views the episodes managed in their first few days on the platform following its June 29 debut.
Season 3 has managed 29M views since launch. It’s still quite a ways away from making the most popular TV list, as it would need to crack 79M views. But it’s only been two weeks, and there is still plenty of time in Netflix’s new 91-day measurement window for the season to make it — especially with the second half of the season yet to be released.

Three VOD charts and Netflix’s top 10 all resulted in films set in non-Earth planetary worlds leading the pack in home viewing. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney) is #1 on VOD (at $19.99) at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, while “65,” four months after its theatrical release and multiple weeks scoring on VOD, tops Netflix’s movie chart.
“Galaxy” had a two-month window, as Disney increasingly slows down its initial home releases (“Avatar: The Way of Water” waited 100 days), and then to PVOD, not streaming. It was dominant enough that it led Vudu’s revenue-based list, even though it was only available for three of the seven days of their full-week rankings.

Bird Box: Barcelona, the NFL docuseries Quarterback, the third season of Sweet Magnolias and Jamie Foxx starrer They Cloned Tyrone are among the new projects debuting on Netflix in July
Bird Box: Barcelona is a Spanish-language spinoff of the 2018 Sandra Bullock-starring thriller. The film, written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, picks up after a mysterious force destroys Earth’s population and follows survivors as they seek to escape visible threats. The movie, which stars Mario Casas and Barbarian breakout Georgina Campbell, is meant to be the first of a series of films to expand the Bird Box universe.
The eight-episode Quarterback, Netflix’s first partnership with the NFL and produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, features unprecedented access to Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota both on and off the field during the 2022 season as the NFL allowed the quarterbacks to be mic’d up for every single game,...

Halfway into The Out-Laws, I was wondering if I should get a drink and watch the rest after getting a little buzzed because that would have certainly made this experience more profound. Not that it is any less than when you watch it dead sober. But there is one condition. You need to have a penchant for bad movies, like me. That is the only way you would enjoy The Out-Laws. It is a very obvious bad movie, which fits right into the “so bad that it’s good” genre. This is a movie where a man mistakes another man’s genitals for a ripcord while sky-diving. The same man repeatedly gets his buttocks grabbed by his fiancé’s parents as if nothing happened. Then, during an all-important heist, this man uses a water gun instead of a real one. Yes, it is that kind of movie. With the freedom of R-rating,...
