New York based actor, producer, filmmaker and former Capetonian – Stelio Savante – has joined thousands of South Africans in celebrating the South African Supreme Court’s ruling on citizenship. The court summary declared that it was constitutionally invalid for South Africans to lose their citizenship when acquiring those from other nations. The ruling comes after the Democratic Alliance (Da) appealed a high court order that originally dismissed the party’s application that the legislation was inconsistent with the South African constitution. However this new ruling reinstated Sa citizenship for all those who lost it.

Savante – who has 135 international credits to his name – described the elation that he and other South Africans were experiencing – “I gratefully wake to celebrate with the tens of thousands of fellow South Africans who’d unnecessarily and inadvertently been deprived of their citizenship courtesy of a flawed and contradictory law that violated international human rights.

Natalie Holt has been set as the composer for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, becoming the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project. She broke the news in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Friday, also confirming reports that longtime Star Wars composer John Williams will provide the show’s main title theme, in his first live-action Star Wars TV outing.
Holt teased that Williams’ past work on the franchise will serve as “tentpoles” for her own—and that she will look to bring her own “new and fresh” interpretation of Star Wars music to the series, via elements she can’t yet reveal. “It’s been glorious, working with my hero,” she said with reference to Williams, “and also bringing my own voice to the show.”
Holt also shared that Williams’ as-yet-unheard theme is “reflective” and “just entirely appropriate” for the series.

Despite the loss of more than 500 Regal Theaters, total grosses went up this weekend. Led by newcomer “The War with Grandpa,” the top 10 grossed about $9.7 million. That’s up from $8.5 million last weekend. With so many library titles adding to the pot, the full take might reach $13 million. By comparison. 2019 saw $141 million on Columbus Day weekend.
To be fair, with most of Regal gone and with New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle still closed, that might have reduced the potential gross by as much as half. Had Regal been open, the total would have been over $15 million. If all markets and theaters were open, the total might have been $26 million. The lack of product is a major factor, but this depressed level of business continues suggest that audiences have not restored their appetites for theaters.
After “Tenet” spent five weeks in the top spot, “The War with Grandpa” took no.

As Regal Theaters in the U.S. and U.K. parent Cineworld weigh closing their cinemas, this weekend’s box office offered little encouragement as this weekend’s top 10 came to about $8.2 million, and could be $10 million-$11 million for all films. That’s down from $9.6 million for last weekend’s top 10, which saw about $12 million overall. By comparison: This weekend in 2019, with the opening of “Joker,” brought in $150 million overall.
“Tenet,” by far the biggest contributor to domestic returns since it opened a month ago ,held well again, down 21 percent with $2.7 million. It has reached $45.1 million domestic so far, for $307 million worldwide.
The only country that is not reliant on “Tenet” is China, where local titles have driven the grossed to over $1 billion in the last six weeks. This weekend (a holiday there) showed two titles both gross over $150 million with “My People My Homeland” and the animated “Jiang Ziya.

“Hocus Pocus” put a spell on moviegoers, and now it’s leading U.S. box office charts 27 years after originally premiering in theaters.
Disney rereleased the 1993 Halloween classic — starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as a trio of witches — this weekend on the big screen, where it collected $650,000 on Friday. “Hocus Pocus,” which is currently playing in 2,570 U.S. cinemas, is expected to generate $1 million in ticket sales over the weekend.
Those box office receipts put “Hocus Pocus” ahead of more recent titles like “New Mutants,” Russell Crowe’s “Unhinged” and mystery-thriller “Infidel.” There’s a chance that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” matched “Hocus Pocus” in terms of Friday earnings, but Warner Bros. has not reported daily numbers and declined to comment. When overall weekend numbers are tallied on Sunday, it’s likely that “Tenet” will beat “Hocus Pocus” for first place. But, “Hocus Pocus” led the...

In its second theatrical run of the year, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back has made its way into the domestic box office top five once again. The re-release of the 1980 classic was shown at nearly 2,100 cinemas, raking in an impressive $900,000 over the weekend. In an acceleration of recent years' trends, international audiences have become increasingly critical to Hollywood’s bottom line during the current Covid-19 pandemic. While Christopher Nolan’s Tenet passed the $280 million mark at the worldwide box office, thanks to strong overseas turnout, the film continued to lose steam domestically, pulling in $3.4 million in its fourth weekend. In context of the current domestic theatrical space, that figure was still good enough to make the Warner Bros. tentpole the top movie in the US, pulling in $1,192 per-screen average in 2,850 theaters. Still, that only brings the domestic box-office total to a $41.2 million, representing 14.5% of the total worldwide gross.
Yet while all was quiet on the home front, Nolan’s mind-bender, starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Kenneth Branagh, and Elizabeth Debicki continued to perform strongly overseas, where its international total now stands at $242 million, for a cumulative worldwide haul to $283.2 million. Tenet is currently playing in 58 markets,...

Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has topped $280 million worldwide, dominating a mild U.S. box office with $3.4 million at 2,850 locations in its fourth weekend to go past $41 million domestically in four weeks.
The Warner Bros. tentpole, which carries a hefty $200 million price tag, took in a weekend total of $19.2 million worldwide in 58 markets. The U.S. posted the top number with a 26% decline, followed by Japan with $3 million in its second weekend and a 30% decline.
“Tenet” is the first major studio release to launch during the pandemic, and its small-ish numbers underline the industry’s challenge of attracting customers amid a worldwide health crisis and social distancing restrictions. Disney’s “Mulan”– which isn’t getting a theatrical release in the U.S. — grossed $3.4 million in 20 markets to lift it to $64 million world wide. Its fifth weekend of “The New Mutants” took in $2.5 million worldwide, including $1.1 million at 2,305 domestic sites.

Now three weeks into Tenet’s highly anticipated North American campaign, Warner Bros.’ wannabe blockbuster continues to tell two wildly divergent tales at the box office. While the Christopher Nolan thriller starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Kenneth Branagh, and Elizabeth Debicki continues to underperform at home, adding just $4.7 million in its third frame and bringing its domestic total to $36.1 million, it just keeps barreling along overseas, where it’s now racked up $203 million and counting.
As many other studios continue to postpone the releases of their splashiest 2020 titles, including most recently Universal’s horror film Candyman and STX Entertainment’s Gerard Butler-starrer Greenland, Warner Bros. instead chose to move forward with Nolan’s latest. Over the past three weekends, Tenet has been seen as a test case, gauging whether American moviegoers are ready to return to theaters despite the ongoing Covid pandemic. But so far that test has...

As theaters regain their footing, they’re making baby steps. The good news: for the first time since March, 10 first-run films played in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, grossing $100,000 or more. And most drops from the past week were under 30%, which is above average: Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” dropped 26%, with few new theaters. Such small drops suggest an uptick in interest in going to theaters.
The bad news: there is little new to be seen. And disturbingly, on the specialty side, even though they played hundreds of theaters, Bleecker Street’s “The Secrets We Keep” and IFC’s “The Nest” failed to pull even minimal adult audiences.
This weekend last year, all films grossed $123 million. Led by three new openers, the lowest total for a Top Ten title was just under $1.5 million. This year, with something over 3,000 locations open (exact number unknown), a tiny increase over last week, total...

Thanks in part to solid numbers in Asia, Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” crossed $250 million at the global box office this weekend. However, domestic grosses continue to lag as the film only grossed $4.7 million in North America, bringing its total in the U.S. and Canada to $36.1 million.
Warner Bros. is still holding out for theaters in major cities like New York and Los Angeles to potentially reopen and provide some boost to American grosses, as the film only added 20 additional theaters this weekend to bring its screen count to 2,930. The slow numbers have provoked concern that the majority of American moviegoers are not confident enough in the safety of movie theaters and public spaces in general to consider buying tickets.
As in past weekends, the silver lining for “Tenet” has come from more promising overseas numbers, including a solid $4.3 million opening in Japan from just 488 locations, topping the opening weekends of...

Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” hit an important milestone, crossing the $250 million mark at the global box office.
That benchmark is bolstered by international revenues, where the sci-fi thriller has surpassed $200 million in ticket sales. But in the U.S., “Tenet” is still struggling to attract audiences. The movie earned $4.7 million in its third weekend, bringing North American grosses to an underwhelming $36.1 million.
As the first major film to release in theaters since the pandemic, “Tenet” has boldly tested the waters to see how willing people would be to return to the movies during a global heath crisis. Warner Bros., the studio behind the $200 million-budgeted film, again stressed that “Tenet’s” theatrical run will be “a marathon, not a sprint.” The hope is that without much competition in terms of new Hollywood tentpoles, “Tenet” will steadily draw crowds for weeks to come.
It’s not just “Tenet” having trouble generating traction among ticket buyers.

Sunday Am Final w/chart: It’s going to be a brutal autumn at the box office, and this weekend is only the start; the first without a major MPAA studio wide release until Oct. 23 when 20th Century Studios/Disney’s all-star mystery Death on the Nile opens. Gosh, Disney, it would help if you moved up the release a week or two. Sprinkled during this desert are independent-released wide releases, which for exhibition, is still appreciated, but they don’t necessarily come with the P&a spend of a major studio release.
If you’re a glass-half-filled type of person, well, then yes, what exhibition is going through right now is arguably better than when all the big circuits were closed over the past six months; unless they’re seeing no foot traffic at all, and the lights are left on. Some say you can’t bring Pre-covid perceptions...

In “Infidel,” Jim Caviezel plays Christian blogger Doug Rawlins, who travels to Cairo to participate in a televised conference on religion. The Muslim host seeks commonalities between the two faiths. “We love Jesus Christ,” the man says, after which Doug pauses for a moment, weighing his words, before rejecting the figurative olive branch. “He is God,” Doug says. “And He wants to be your God.” The audience is stunned at Doug’s audacity. Less surprising to all parties, Doug is kidnapped from his hotel room by angry Muslims a few hours later.
The latest film from controversial writer-director Cyrus Nowrasteh (“The Path to 9/11”) actually opens with a forward glimpse of Doug facing a firing squad on a Tehran rooftop, so we know from the jump that his Cairo visit didn’t go well. On the surface, “Infidel” appears to be a straightforward Middle East-set thriller — the kind that reaffirms Americans’ xenophobic impulses,...

Distributors keep changing their minds right up until the day before their movies are supposed to open in one of the wildest release eras in memory, making it nearly impossible for moviegoers to keep track of what’s opening when, and where, and how.
This week’s biggest theatrical opening is a Jim Caviezel movie called “Infidel,” although the distribution company Cloudburst Entertainment never responded to requests for review, so we couldn’t do our jobs on that one without driving to the nearest city where theaters are open, so investigate at your own risk.
Audiences willing to brave cinemas will find some reliable options in more limited theatrical release, including “Martha Marcy May Marlene” director Sean Durkin’s latest, “The Nest,” which is the sort of slow-burn psychological drama that benefits from your undivided attention. Meanwhile, for those seeking from-the-nest streaming options, Durkin’s longtime partner in crime, fellow Borderline filmmaker Antonio Campos,...

Tenet’s lukewarm second weekend is a sign that the domestic box office still has a long way to go before things get back to normal, especially as New York and Los Angeles theaters remain shuttered.
In the wake of Tenet’s second weekend box office performance, release dates have been shuffled yet again. Warner Bros’ push of Wonder Woman 1984 from October 2 to Christmas gives Tenet a longer competition-free run. Candyman left its October 16 release date and is now expected to be released in 2021. STX Entertainment’s Greenland, which stars Gerard Butler and made $11.5 million internationally, was pushed from its September 25 release to an undecided date later this year. The one move up in the release schedule came from Universal, moving The Croods: A New Age from December 23 to November 25.
This week’s only wide release is the Jim Caviezel starrer Infidel, which opens on 1,724 screens. It is the first release from Cloudburst Entertainment,...

"The days of Entebbe are long over..." An official trailer has debuted for a kidnapping thriller titled Infidel, from American filmmaker Cyrus Nowrasteh. Inspired by true events, the film was shot on location in the Middle East. An American man, played by Jim Caviezel, is kidnapped after a friend invites him to Cairo to speak out about recent militant uprisings. He is eventually taken to Iran and imprisoned on spying charges. His wife heads to Iran after hearing the news, determined to get him back since the government won't help. This also stars Claudia Karvan, Hal Ozsan, Stelio Savante, and Bijan Daneshmand. An important warning - this film is being released with D'Souza Media, a known extremist and dangerous propagandist who supports xenophobia and hate. It's obviously a true story anyway, but the film may have a hateful side. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Cyrus Nowrasteh's Infidel, direct...
