Channel 4’s former Deputy Programmes Chief Kelly Webb-Lamb has launched a non-scripted production outfit with two former Channel 4 commissioners to create “global formats and ideas of scale.”
Webb-Lamb, who up until recently was the second most senior content person at the Gogglebox network, has opened Mothership Productions with Creative Director Charlotte Desai and Director of Programmes Gilly Greenslade, both of whom worked extensively with her at Channel 4 before she departed last year.
The production outfit looks set to be a key player in the booming British non-scripted TV sector, focusing on big, sellable formats, and said it already has several projects in advanced development while the team is currently pitching to broadcaster and SVoD commissioners.
Webb-Lamb was at Channel 4 for five years and deputy to Chief Content Officer Ian Katz for three, during which time she commissioned the likes of The Circle, Studio Lambert’s format that was subsequently remade for Netflix,...

Former Channel 4 deputy director of programs and head of popular factual Kelly Webb-Lamb has set up a new production company.
Mothership Productions will focus on global formats and “ideas of scale” across the unscripted genres. The new outfit has already hit the ground running with a senior team that includes Charlotte Desai, Gilly Greenslade and Gudren Claire.
“After 25 years in the industry on both sides of the pitching/buying table, it felt like it was time to take the leap and have a go at doing it for myself,” said Webb-Lamb. “I can’t honestly believe I’ve managed to persuade such a brilliant group of women to come along for the ride with me. We are super ambitious — and intend to make some properly great, entertaining, warm and witty programmes — and have a lot of fun.”
Webb-Lamb is one of the U.K. TV industry’s most well-respected executives.

Shows will begin rolling out this month and include 8 Out Of 10 Cats; Location, Location, Location; Nikki Grahame: Who Is She?, Sas: Who Dares Wins and The Dog House. Selected titles will be made available 30 days after their first broadcast on Channel 4 or younger sibling network E4. It doesn’t get more ironic than the hand that’s been dealt the U.K.’s Channel 4.
The publicly owned broadcaster set up by then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher — and known overseas as the creative incubator of shows like “Derry Girls” and “It’s a Sin” — is facing a potential sale by Boris Johnson’s government at the exact moment it delivers the highest content budget in its 39-year history and eyes a record-breaking £1 billion ($1.3 billion) in revenues for 2021.
Ian Katz, chief content officer, tells Variety that £700 million is ear-marked for new shows in 2022 — a cash infusion that will only build on what he brands as an auspicious “purple patch” for the channel.
The broadcaster has had a bumper year, delivering the hard-won free-to-air premieres of British tennis star Emma Raducanu’s historic U.S. Open win and Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 championship run, and airing shows like Peacock co-produced comedy “We Are Lady Parts,...

The Hatfields versus the McCoys. Thomas Edison versus Nikola Telsa. DC versus Marvel. Dogs versus cats. … Well, maybe dog people versus cat people.
Great rivalries can inspire creative competition, breed history-making moments and teach those watching the rivalry play out a lot about themselves in the process. All too often, they also cause people to “pick a side” and declare themselves on one team or the other.
Take Netflix’s dueling docuseries “Dogs” and “Cat People,” for example: Launching on July 7, the second season of the former features four episodes dedicated to remarkable dogs (and their pet parents) from Butler University’s mascot Butler Blue to NASA astronaut Leland Melvin’s viral Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Meanwhile, also launching on July 7, the latter series debuts with six episodes focused on felines and their not-as-furry human companions, including rapper Moshow, Wakuneco artist Sachi and trainer Samantha Martin of the Amazing Acro-Cats. Prospective dog owners are sometimes warned that having a puppy is like having a new baby — sleepless, grueling and thankless. Often, new pet parents realize the hard way that their puppy is absolutely nothing like a tiny infant: in fact, it’s worse. Babies, generally, don’t draw blood.
During the pandemic, when pup parents were stranded at home with furry land sharks, in the absence of group classes or in-person behaviorist sessions, one source of accessible guidance came in the form of dog training TV shows. In the U.K., where Kennel Club data indicates that 25% of new dog owners bought a puppy during the pandemic without doing their research, these shows became a lifeline.
“They are tuning in because you want to know that other people are in the same situation,” says London-based dog behaviorist and trainer Louise Glazebrook, who stars in the BBC’s “12 Puppies and Us.

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has announced a Global Format Fund that will invest in new British-created and produced formats with global potential that will initially be worth £30 million ($40 million) over two years.
Channel 4 will guarantee minimum runs and recommissioning triggers up front for projects greenlit under this approach. The Fund will focus on genres with the greatest potential for global format success, including daytime, factual entertainment, features and entertainment.
The Fund is part of Channel 4’s new Future4 strategy that was outlined on Thursday. The strategy has a clear remit of doubling viewing to the broadcaster’s All 4 catch-up service over the next five years.
There will also be an increased focus on investing more in content that performs strongly on All 4, like youth-skewing factual entertainment, “box-settable” and noisy documentaries, reality, comedy entertainment, scripted comedy and youth-skewing “bingeable” drama.

Network 10 is sticking to tried-and-true formats next year, its schedule and investment in local content unaffected by the pandemic-induced advertising downturn.
While all the new and returning shows unveiled today were commissioned before the Federal Government’s media reforms scrapped the local content sub-quotas, executives say that had no bearing on its strategy for 2021.

While all the new and returning shows unveiled today were commissioned before the Federal Government’s media reforms scrapped the local content sub-quotas, executives say that had no bearing on its strategy for 2021.
New to the slate next year are Making It Australia, an adaptation of the NBCUniversal format, a local version of the UK’s The Dog House and The First Inventors, a co-commission with Nitv. (See separate story).
The network continues to commission children’s dramas, with the second series of Jonathan M. Shiff Productions’ The Bureau of Magical Things, the Stephen Jaggi Company’s teen mystery drama Dive Club (a co-commission with Netflix) and a third show yet to be announced. All will premiere on 10 Shake.

Rob Collins.
Rob Collins will host The First Inventors, a first-hand account of the ancient discoveries made by Indigenous Australians – one of three factual shows that will premiere on Network 10 next year.

Co-commissioned with Nitv, The First Inventors will see Collins talk to Indigenous Australian experts to shine a new light on ancient Indigenous innovations and discoveries including sophisticated stone tools, art, agriculture and irrigation.
Moogie Down Productions and Butter Media will co-produce the 4-part documentary, which will illustrate how the longest enduring civilisation on earth has lasted because of its extraordinary adaptability, technical innovation and ingenuity.

The goal of any new streaming service worth its salt is consolidation. We’ve got a lot of major entertainment conglomerates now and each one of them needs a streaming home to consolidate its content on. With that in mind, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is undoubtedly the biggest streaming release since Disney+ last year.
When AT&T acquired Time Warner and all its holdings in 2016, the newly-branded WarnerMedia subsidiary needed a place to house thousands of Warner movies, and other series, films, and documentaries from Warner-branded studios like CNN, TNT, TBS, The CW, Adult Swim, and much more. Enter HBO Max. Though HBO Max is named after Warner’s original premier streaming and cable entity in HBO, this is much more than just an “upgraded” version of HBO. HBO Max is the juggernaut WarnerMedia streaming service AT&T promised.

HBO Max has announced it will officially resurrect the beloved animated series “Adventure Time” this June, about a month after the new streaming platform launches May 27. The first of four hourlong “Adventure Time” specials coming to HBO Max is “Adventure Time: Distant Lands — Bmo,” which will premiere Thursday, June 25. The Emmy and Peabody winner created by Pendleton Ward ran for 10 seasons and 283 episodes on Cartoon Network. The series finale aired on September 3, 2018. Ward launched his new show, “The Midnight Gospel,” on Netflix in April.
The official HBO Max synopsis for the return of “Adventure Time” reads: “Return to the Land of Ooo and beyond in ‘Adventure Time: Distant Lands.’ Based on the animated series, these four breakout specials explore the unseen corners of the world with characters both familiar and brand new. The first of these specials is ‘Bmo,’ which follows the lovable little robot on a new adventure. When...
